one thing i really fucking hate about some movies and shows (and what makes me doubt the effectiveness of them) is when they dont have faith in their audience to remember little details/ understand the weight of a detail that has already been revealed. like when a character mentions something that, to a viewer who doesn’t have the background information, can seem vague. so it cuts to a flashback FROM A PREVIOUS EPISODE… SOMETHING THEYVE ALREADY SHOWN… i hate it!!!! like stop wasting my time!!! let me connect the dots myself!!!!!!! its not black and white though, i think flashbacks to something already shown can be artful, surrealist, thoughtful, or even stress the importance of an event on a character and its impact on their worldview. but like . it has to have purpose other than going “hey remember this thing that happened a few episodes/ seasons ago?” like FUCK OFF !!!! perhaps it would serve more of a purpose in a time where the details werent easily accessible via the internet but i just hate it. that’s why i liked westworld so much.. it didnt do that but it was almost closer to the other end of the horseshoe where you’d be confused/ miss something and have to watch previous episodes over again since it was densely packed in some aspects. i think some people didn’t like the show because of that very reason or maybe felt like there were some opulent gilded maguffins but idk i didnt feel that way and actually i enjoy hunting for details to connect dots i think its fun i love feeling like charlie kelly pepe silvia
#anyway its like do you just need to meet a time requirement or something why are you showing me something iver again.#and again i think there are ways it can be effective for example showing it again under a new context somehow#hbo t lou did this episode one and it pissed me off so fucking much Like yeah we get it joel’s paternal. but idk it felt like it stripped#away the audiences ability to interpret onto that. it made that moment 2 dimensional and flat.#it doubted both the audience and the actors ability like …. Thats how i feel#it was the creators of the show saying This is what this story is about okay? condescendingly#also hbo watchmen just did this too ep 5#reliance on flashbacks to something that has already been shown is weak imo

Moving Forward from Series 4
I had a lovely chat yesterday with my new friend over at @meta-lock regarding series 4. It helped me to really come to terms with the season and understand my feelings regarding the series. I know that everyone is struggling with their own reasons why series 4 was such a “clusterfuck” but for me it really boiled down to not being able to trust my own perception of what I saw for three seasons, and all the questions the new one had created for me. As you get older you find that your ability to perceive a situation changes from when you were younger. I am part of the 35 and over section of this fandom and I can tell you that I have a better handle on interpreting and understanding situations now that I am older. As my friend @meta-lock mentioned one’s perceptions become more “calibrated” when you are older, and as such I decided that the reason I am so torn is because I was focusing on the 1,000 new things running through my mind from this season and it's creating doubt. I felt intense doubt for the first time, just like Sherlock in The Hounds of Baskerville. I’ve for the most part been able to understand this show (with help from Reb’s videos and Nattie’s writings) but it’s time for me to focus on what I know the truth to be. The following is a list, though no comprehensive, of things that I know for sure regarding the series titled Sherlock. They are in no particular order. These are my truths about the show and no one will ever convince otherwise. I may have been rattled from this season but after the month Mofftiss took from me I am back to my beginning.
Sherlock is in love with John. John killed for Sherlock on day one and would do it again in a heartbeat.
They both would kill for one another without question.
TSoT is a love letter to John Watson from Sherlock. The poor man burn behind candles as he played a torturous melody while the man he loves danced with someone else. You can actually pinpoint the moment when everyone is dancing and his heart rips in two.
He overdoses on the plane because he will never see John again and decided to softly drift off reading Johns words one last time. That is romantic love plain and simple.
I believe TST was doctored footage which plays into the entree series promo of distorting reality (all those 4th wall breaks and Moriarty break ins).
The way that Mary played out “looks like” a mistake. If we take her at face value (what they have given us) then I don't think she had any purpose and they may have just written themselves into a corner. If she wasn't a mistake she's still connected to Moriarty in season five and the truth will be revealed.
Sherlock needs to make the first move. He doesn’t in series 3 because he truly thinks John wants Mary so he puts John’s happiness before his own. All John will need is one word from Sherlock and he will fall at his feet. John is an extremely closeted man who will never ever make the first move again.
There are plot holes and inconsistency and nothing makes sense because its not supposed to, there is going to be another season. They have to keep the drama and insanity up to finish the series with a bang. We know it's a five arc'er and the only reason we as fans thought Johnlock was a go this season was because of TAB. I think that we were "derailed" by TAB. We were so sure the arc had moved up. But it didn't. Now more than ever the story doesn't make sense without Johnlock. TAB interpretations were correct- I was a casual at the time of TAB and I was like WTF is going on here I am so lost- I knew John and Sherlock loved one another but TAB is like some fever hallucination shit….Commence me finding Tumblr and really figuring out what it all meant. THAT DID NOT CHANGE.
I am not a business person I am a teacher but I live in the real world (most of the time) and for me the real world can always be boiled down to money. This is, I believe the strongest piece of evidence as to why this season was a deliberate choice. The money the BBC spent for the Piccadilly Circus promo is just a small glimpse at how much money they are willing to spend to promote this show. This indicates to me that they care about the show, the ratings, and the money they make. They would not make a special without promoting the hell out of it and getting a ratings bonanza. I just can't see why the BBC would allow a lucrative show to destroy itself and then go off the grid for 2-3 years just to make a point (that's would be a poor fiscal decision). I don't think there is a secret episode that is just going to pop up. I think its sound money sense to shoot the usual in between season special aka Christmas Special at the same time as season four, especially while they had the busy actors. It would explain all the missing scenes (that we know of) and the allegedly longer shooting schedule. It will happen but I don’t believe it will be any time soon which is problematic for me. If you wait to long you run the risk of alienating not only your regular audience but your devoted audience (which they have badly bruised this year). Gatiss and Moffitt may have their limitations as writers but I do not believe they are that bad as to put out series 4 without it being a set up for a future rug pull. This isn’t “trusting in our dads” this is just common sense and the desire on their part to have a lucrative, successful career.
Freebatch isn’t a thing (don’t get mad at me!). As much as we laugh about it and ship it we have no concrete proof- which means that Benedict and Martin chose to act the way they did in character, which also means they were interpreting what they saw and heard from the script and TPTB. Interviews from cast, crew and writers are not a credible sources of information. I think they are counterproductive and actually hurt the fandom. They lie, they derail, they deny anything that comes close to the plot. They say things that are twisted out of context. This is what happened in series four. They will protect what they love from anyone and everyone because they have to. Because we are smart. Stick to what you know- the story, the narrative will never lie in the end. TPTB are on Tumblr for sure and they troll this site to see how close this amazing group of people are solving the puzzles.
The writers are not kind to our shippers. They have been rude and dismissive and they will at some point have to pay the piper for that. Mark my words.
These are my personal truths and I am comfortable with these interpretations. I will not let anyone tell me what I saw didn’t happen. You may not agree with what my list has on it but thats okay. It is far from complete (I would have pages upon pages) but I encourage you to make your own list to help you see the truths you know. I used to feel that I couldn’t trust the writers and quite frankly I still don’t. But the alternative is that these writers are so bad, so out of touch with their show that they had no idea what they were writing and tanked it. This just doesn’t make any real world sense so I’ve decided to choose to believe the latter and no one will ever convince me that what they told me was a lie.
