any Henry Jekylls?
Hello! I don't know! Let's find out!
...
There are two!
Here's one -
Right near the bottom there, in 1861, he is the son of Mary and Robert Jekyll, a grocer in London.
He got married in 1870, to Harriet Hanson, a farmer's daughter, where he is listed as a -- a tanning maker?
Ah, that makes sense - 1871, he is a dairyman in Marylebone.
An 1875 London directory -
Cows is a recurring theme here, I feel. Tho I would rather like to know about his neighbours, honestly.
In 1872 they had a daughter, Hilda Beatrice -
And I know she married a George Long and moved to Berlin and died in 1937, but my German is nonexistent - and I can't find any more about this Henry or his wife, so there my research ends tbh.
Next!
Here we have Henry Joseph Campbell Jekyll, age 17 in 1861 -
This one is a lot posher than the previous - his dad Joseph, who died in the 50s was a "fundholder", and even post his death they have a cook a housemaid and a footman. Not The Poshest, a small household, but certainly I should say middle class.
Now, what's interesting here is they are being visited by Australian cousins - or, one - I don't know if she or the rest lived there, but Lucy was certainly born there, and given her age she might've been in England to go to boarding school.
It's interesting, because if we skip forward,, several years, he is living - well, it's the same general part of the world - he's in NZ Aotearoa!
He's a landowner, per the electoral roll - here he and his wife are in 1902
They got married in 1878, in New Zealand, so he must've moved before then, so let's go back a bit -
In 1860, he's hmm apprenticed not really, employed, as a clerk to an attorney for 5 years
Okay, so we know he was in London til at least 1865, where/when else can we find him?
.
Is this a new guy??
New South Wales is Australia, and this guy's being released from prison?? Doesn't seem to match up with our middle class clerk in Linwood.
Parramatta Australia? Stealing?? Stealing what? I don't know, I'm afraid.
Back to the posh one, if this isn't the same guy -
One of them, anyway, is "unassisted" in travelling to Queensland in 1878 - I'd presume, tho I don't know the dates of that practice, that means he wasn't transported - aboard the Ramsey, docking in Brisbane
In 1885, our one is selling some land in Pigeon Bay, on the South Island (which from a google looks gorgeous tbh)
Then there's a bunch of electoral rolls, his son Edward was born in 1886 (and became a lieutenant of some kind in WW1), and finally -
Died age 69.
No wait! A description of the one who was in prison!
He is the one that arrived aboard the Ramsey, he's from London and born in 1849 (same as the cowkeeper, who I cannot find any further details for), is Church of England, a haberdasher (I think?) 5 foot 5 "of spare make" (skinny, I spose), fresh complexion, dark brown hair and light brown eyes, he can read and write and he has some kind of pox marks "all over body".
There, now I'm done!

remember being in a horrid shitty mood catching the bus back to my parents, thinking, if they just painted a bus lane on the fucking road my journey could take less than 45 minutes and be way more reliable. wondering why it isn't there, the infrastructure, surely i could afford the jail time if i just went out there and built it, they wouldn't tear it down right? footpaths and shit. cause it's still a pretty rural area. instead i'm sitting on the bus destroying my mental health, no wonder i feel better having moved out of the area, when every car that cuts in front of us and all the traffic we can't just zoom past feels like a personal put-down, an insult to my way of life that i've chosen because it's better for all of us, not just me.
and realising, when my head's out of the constant frustration of it having moved out to somewhere walkable, i can see it 'above the trees' if you will that i can whine and bitch about it all i can (and believe me i have) but any change like the one i want, is political. we do this for the city, we as the whole city do it together. of course it would be good, say the 3+ million of us living in greater brisbane, soon to be 4, 5, 6, 7 million in the leadup to 2032 and after, but it's the tragedy of the commons isn't it? my priority, say 3+ million minus one self-supporting adult in this soon-to-be megacity, is getting to work every day and putting food on the table. i've never had that strong of a survival drive, I'd rather do the right thing and invest my choices into something that makes for a better city than be able to work or eat but when it comes to my mental health? sometimes you've gotta learn the hard way, some things you can't change, and it's not worth losing everything over. you can't think if you're exposing yourself constantly to what's fucking up your brain like if i punished myself for the inaction of the city it might make it better.
i'm starting to learn it doesn't. change is political, it's about power, and people are like water (bear with me, i'm a hydrologist) because it takes volume, all going a certain way, to make the biggest impact. have the strongest force. erode grooves in rocks and wash away entire buildings (this is brisbane, we've seen it happen). what we need, is all these people, 3+ million of us and more, coming together around an idea. getting together, council can't do anything to stop a majority, not in australia at least, and the functionality of a city is something we all need. heck, traffic is bad for all of our mental health and i would bet both my kidneys that the impact of it on our lives and relationships is understudied and underreported exponentially. we can solve this, but individual choices alone don't do shit.
so i'll stop beating myself up for not being able to simply will all the traffic lights along my commute to be green, and turn the energy i put into being mad at all of those stupid annoying cars into the things i do best. it turns out i'm really fucking good at drawing up ideas and connecting with people. so i'll stop beating myself up about the fact that the uni degree i did so i'd know about these things and the job i do for Experience and Sustenance meant i haven't had time to do all of these things As Soon As I Thought Of Them (like you always got told to do for your homework assignments). instead i'll think in larger timeframes. 9 years til the olympics. 2 to finish my masters degree. 27 til the rest of the world is carbon negative like tasmania and bhutan. what can i do in each of these timeframes? and how can i prioritise it?
as i coax my brain slowly out of fight or flight, as i put my pencils and watercolours and maps to annotate out on the table in front of me and say 'take your time, but you're allowed to do what you love' i know the places that have marked on my soul stand out to me. south east queensland right out to the bay. western sydney and bringing dignity to our second cbd, parramatta. queenstown tasmania, for some reason. the murray-darling basin as a whole, gundagai and the murrumbidgee at its heart. the red dirt centre of this great land and all the peoples and cultures it holds. i can hold all of their perspectives. i can train my intuition to find out all of their needs. i can put myself into 26 million pairs of shoes and decorate the lands and i can do it respectfully and lovingly like i'm tattooing my own skin because it might as well be. tattoo it with the needs of all of us and all who have gone before. blueprints of functionality, functionality we don't have, and then meet all 26 million souls (okay, i probably only need 2 million if we're starting from brisbane) and say to them, would you dream this dream with me? will you imagine this lifestyle where you're less burdened? can you be a part of simply talking about it, because that's how we're going to make it happen? can you improve it, make it better, make it yours, knowing that when you do it imprints itself on your heart a little more, you feel a part of it? and then we're all part of it. it takes years, but it can happen.
so i guess i've got my life's work cut out for me, and i'm so fucking glad i could figure this out from something that has been frustrating me to no end, because 'you can't change it' doesn't work for me unless you switch it out like a child's toy for something more big and exciting that i can change instead. fuck you, conformity. i found what it can be for me. a dream so big it doesn't matter if i can only do some of it--and who says i have to limit myself to australia?

I'd say the 3.5" floppy was when computing became mainstream. Personal computers existed for a long time at around the price of a car. Then they crashed.
I don't know anyone who had an 8" at home. 5 1/4 was used for the models that were expensive for a normal household. My introduction was through a friend of the family who was a computer programmer, and whose equipment was paid for by the company. I saw some later at various places, but the few people I knew of who had them at home were definitely better off. Maybe they were relatively cheaper overseas. By the end of the 1980s, 5¼-inch disks had been superseded by 3½-inch disks.
And what else happened at around that time? Home internet. In fact, I'm pretty sure icons themselves came in at that time. There's no point having a symbol for a 5 1/4 when most of the save functions will be done either on a command line or something similar, and when the word processors came in, there was no standardisation anyway.
I think this was the first word processor I used. Not fun. Microsoft changed all that. So did Apple. Suddenly the same icons used in word processor would appear in a database. I can remember using the Amiga while most PC systems were using a CLI.
Notice the icon top right? It doesn't mean save.
Have a look at Windows 1.0. This was a bit of a flop. I never saw much point in Windows until 3.1, when it blew everyone away.
And there's the 3.5". So my theory is that by the time windows based systems were taking off, the 5 1/4 was on the way out, the 3.5 was taking over and the home internet was becoming mainstream.
This article points out that the 3.5 was actually around for a very long time.
"the format held out far longer than anyone expected, regularly shipping in PCs up until the mid-2000s" I can tell you sometimes the operating system manufacturers would release their product on 3.5".
I was flabbergasted when I bought OS2/WARP and found out it was on floppy. No, they didn't warn me, certainly didn't install it for me, and it was NO REFUNDS. I think I bought it over the phone, along with a desktop from a shop in Parramatta. It was cheap, I was poor, and back then I had no idea that shops would be willing to burn the customers in exchange for a quick buck. After that time, I have always preferred being able to walk in and inspect before buying - but it is impossible nowadays. The install would often fail halfway through. Start again. One time I had the tech support guy on the phone with me for hours, because my hardware was supposed to be supported but it clearly wasn't. I gave up on that OS and it failed as a competitor to windows, perhaps because windows was being sold on CD. Oooh, Windows 95 was also sometimes sold on 3.5. I'd forgotten about that.
So there you are. Icons were around earlier but they only really took off with the Apple 1.0.
But I don't really remember seeing them used at home. And look at the drive it was using.
I think my first exposure to Macs was maybe 88? So I think of them as being pretty late; maybe they were more common in the US/Europe. But that was back in 84, and the snazzy 3.5 was quite prominent. I was already familiar with that sort of a computer - I think I must have already been using an amiga 500 at home, and started ahead of most students in being able to use the system. Whereas I had a lot of friends who were still using a command line interface.
The Amiga 500 was a lot cheaper, and it showed, but under better management it could have been a real competitor to IBM/Microsoft. It was affordable for most families. That was mind-blowing. And the interface was a hell of a lot friendlier than the IBM clones had available. MS-DOS dominated the IBM PC compatible market between 1981 and 1995.
Windows 3.1, made generally available on March 1, 1992.
So basically everyone else had a GUI by that time. IBM Clones were more business machines than anything else, but with 3.1, computing was starting to get to the point where granny could do it. Windows 95, and microsoft office, changed everything I would say, and pretty much crushed all opposition. We still technically have Apple computers, but they pretty much exist to be an expensive toy now. And of course, the consoles have taken over in gaming, and mobile computing continues to erode the very concept of the desktop, with top down pressure to get rid of the very idea of owning a computer or an application, and just have people rent computing power and stream the results. At some point, I expect neural interfaces will take over. Embedded interfaces are weirdly popular in business already, I am told. And then I expect the current generation of iconography to disappear. But until then, the icons we know are largely there because of one woman working for Apple, and the save icon in particular is there because one form of technology was just so damned useful... and used long after it shouldn't have been for those bloody operating system installs....
TiL (click to go to the thread, which probably has more interesting tidbits I missed).

7 Reasons Criminal Defence Lawyers Are Crucial in Protecting Your Rights
The criminal justice system is daunting, mainly when dealing with life-altering charges. Criminal defence lawyers in Parramatta are essential to ensuring that an accused person has a fair trial and that their constitutional rights are upheld. There are seven strong reasons to have a proficient criminal defence attorney safeguard your rights and ensure justice.
Knowledge of the Legal System
They know the system inside out and are criminal defence lawyers. But when it comes to the law, it's complicated and follows every rule and precedent at each step in a criminal case. Lawyers know the laws — not only the things but also what they are, how they can be interpreted, when they are being applied to solve a particular situation, and how to pass them on to their clients using them. The ability to assert and understand legal language, file motions, present arguments, and understand what this can all mean in court are all essential in the courtroom and can all matter in this case.
Protection Against Unfair Treatment
The right to a fair trial is essential to the justice system, but only some get it with solid legal support. An experienced defence lawyer works to prevent bias or unfair treatment by law enforcement, prosecutors, or judges. They watch for violations of legal procedures and ensure the client's rights are protected from unethical or unconstitutional actions. For example, they can challenge evidence gathered without a warrant or pressured confessions.
Investigation and Evidence Collection
Gathering and building a robust evidence-based defence is one of the most important tasks of a criminal defence lawyer. Experience doesn't have to come just from the prosecution's evidence. They conduct this by investigating them, interviewing witnesses, and consulting with experts to view forensic proof. However, this extensive routine can expose holes or prejudices in the prosecution's case, resulting in having the charges knocked down or getting a reduced sentence.
Negotiation Skills for Plea Bargains
In some cases of crime, a plea bargain can be a behaviour strategy. Prosecutors often plead to short trials, which isn’t always in the defendant’s best interest. The only way for any plea bargain to be fair is if they can negotiate with the prosecution using a skilful defence attorney. That meant less time in jail, fewer charges, or even rehabilitation instead of jail. Without a lawyer to help them, defendants won't know if they're getting a fair or bad deal.
Emotional Support and Guidance
The prospect of getting criminal charges can be very stressful and overwhelming. But criminal defence attorneys do not just represent people criminalised but also emotionally. They aid clients in understanding the legal process, foresee a potential outcome, etc., as this process is challenging. Defence lawyers help reduce anxiety by keeping clients informed and prepared and helping them make informed decisions about their future.
Developing a Solid Defence Strategy
Criminal cases are different, so a "one-size-fits-all" defence rarely works. Criminal lawyers in Parramatta carefully examine all aspects of the case, including the charges, evidence, and the defendant's background, to create a personalised defence strategy. It could involve providing an alibi, cross-examining the witness, or even taking issue with how the case was investigated. A tailored defence can make the difference between a positive outcome, which could be an acquittal, something with reduced charges or a lighter sentence.
Advocating for Rights Beyond the Trial
A defence lawyer's job continues even after the trial ends. Many cases include postconviction actions such as appeals or ensuring that clients' rights are protected after sentencing. The advocacy might consist of advocating for fair treatment in prison, asking for prison sentence reduction or fighting against invalid parole decisions. In cases of wrongful conviction, defence attorneys lead the fight to null the sentence, remove criminal records and win justice.
Conclusion
The first and most essential to maintaining fairness and integrity within the justice system is criminal defence attorneys. Their knowledge, watchfulness, and advocacy ensure that people charged with crimes are guaranteed constitutional rights, and justice is part of it for everybody. If there were a simple absence of criminal defence lawyers, this would result in a preponderance and imbalance so unfair to defence clients that we would invariably see all manner of miscarriages of justice, wrongful convictions and the wholesale collapse of public confidence in the legal system. Having a criminal defence lawyer on your side during one of the most challenging situations puts you on an even keel and gives you the kind of support you need.

Parramatta Smile Makeovers: The Benefits Of Cosmetic Dentistry For Boosting Self-Esteem
Your smile is an effective weapon. It can make a lasting impression because it's frequently the first thing that people notice about you. But what if your grin doesn't make you feel confident? This is where cosmetic dentistry in Parramatta plays a transformative role, offering smile makeovers that go beyond aesthetics to boost confidence and change lives.
The Importance of Confidence
One essential component of our general well-being is confidence. It influences our self-perception, how we relate to other people, and even our level of success in different spheres of life. Your confidence may suffer if you're self-conscious about your smile. You may discover that you conceal your mouth when you laugh or steer clear of circumstances when you have to smile in public.
This lack of confidence can have far-reaching effects on your life, both personally and professionally. Studies have shown that people with confident smiles are often perceived as more attractive, approachable, and successful. They tend to exude positivity, which can lead to better opportunities and relationships.
Smile Makeovers: Beyond Aesthetics
Cosmetic dentistry in Parramatta offers a range of treatments and procedures aimed at enhancing the appearance of your smile. These include teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, dental implants, and more. While these treatments undoubtedly improve the aesthetics of your smile, their impact goes deeper.
1. Whiter Teeth, Brighter Smile:
Teeth whitening can significantly boost your smile's aesthetics by removing stains and discolouration. This simple procedure can make you feel more youthful and vibrant, translating into greater confidence.
2. Porcelain Veneers for Flawless Smiles:
Veneers are custom-made shells that cover the front surface of your teeth. They can correct various dental imperfections, from chips and gaps to misaligned teeth. With veneers, you can achieve a flawless smile that you're proud to show off.
3. Dental Implants for Missing Teeth:
Missing teeth can be a source of embarrassment and insecurity. Dental implants not only restore your smile's appearance but also provide functional benefits. They allow you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence as if you never lost a tooth.
4. Smile Alignment with Orthodontics:
Crooked or misaligned teeth can be a confidence-damaging issue. Orthodontic treatments like Invisalign and traditional braces can straighten your teeth, resulting in a more harmonious and confident smile.
The Confidence Boost
When you undergo a smile makeover in Parramatta, it's not just about the physical transformation. It's about the emotional and psychological changes that come with it. As you see your smile improve, you'll likely experience a newfound sense of self-assuredness.
Imagine the freedom of smiling without hesitation, laughing without covering your mouth, and speaking with confidence. A smile makeover can make this a reality. It can positively impact your personal and professional life, opening doors and opportunities you might have previously shied away from.
Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentistry
To embark on your smile makeover journey, it's crucial to choose the right cosmetic dentistry. Look for a practitioner with a proven track record, a commitment to using the latest technology and techniques, and a genuine passion for transforming smiles and boosting confidence.
Parramatta's cosmetic dentistry services have a profound role in enhancing confidence. Beyond just improving aesthetics, smile makeovers can change lives by empowering individuals to embrace their smiles and radiate confidence in every aspect of their lives. Don't let smile insecurities hold you back; explore the possibilities of cosmetic dentistry and embark on your journey to a more confident, radiant you. Your smile is your superpower – it's time to unleash it!

The Year of the Missing Cat
In 2023, the Lunar New Year starts on Sunday, 22 January 2023.
While the Chinese and Vietnamese zodiac animals are the same for most years, the fourth animal of their zodiacs are different - it's Rabbit for Chinese and Cat for Vietnamese. There are 12 animals in a cycle.
2023 is one of those years when the animals are different.
With Australia's increasing diversity, Lunar New Year is a big celebration these days.
Brands and local governmnents are helping to celebrate and promote diversity by running their own festivals and promotions. But most are either ignorant of the Year of the Cat or they just don't care about the Vietnamese-Australian community (there's over 320,000 of us).
Brands like The Star, who run free buses to Cabramatta and Bankstown for gamblers, are promoting 2023 as the Year of the Rabbit. No acknowledgement of the Cat for the Vietnamese punters that line their cofffers. In case you're interested, The Star Express bus from Cabramatta to the Casino is free and leaves Cabramatta as late as 10.40pm.
The City of Sydney who eventually caved in the community pressure and remaned their festival from "Chinese New Year" to using the inclusive "Lunar New Year", are sticking to Rabbit for 2023. As you can see in the image below, lots of lions, rabbits and other icons, but apparently Lunar New Year isn't inclusive when it comes to Vietnamese cats.
UPDATE: a story ran on ABC about the issue on Friday, 13 January.
Since then, the City of Sydney removed references to Year of the Rabbit on their website. They provided the following response to me:
"…we work to include aspects of different cultures in our Sydney Lunar Festival celebrations. The festival features events celebrating Vietnamese culture including Lunar Spectacular show performances, lion dances, and a hand-painted Vietnamese Lunar Gateway in Haymarket. In preparing for the festival and associated artwork, we consulted extensively on its designs with several community groups, including members from Sydney’s Vietnamese community. Thanks, City of Sydney".
Woolworths is using Rabbit, even in the Vietnamese community hubs of Cabramatta and Fairfield.
There are brands and local governments that are trying to be inclusive.
SBS shows that the Cat and Rabbit can exist harmoniously...
Fairfield City Council was able to scrape together enough funds to illustrate both Cat and Rabbit.
Canterbury-Bankstown City Council manged it too, they even included the Vietnamese word for Cat and Chinese character for Rabbit!
You can't be what you can't see. That's why there is a push for greater cultural reprsentation across the board, in senior jobs, media, advertising etc.
The ignorance of The Star and City of Sydney shows that there's still a lot of work to be done.
"All animals are equal but some are more equal than others" George Orwell.
To me, as far as they're concerned, the Vietnamese community doesn't exist.
WHO'S DOING WHAT?
Here's a list of what animals brands and councils are recognising this Lunar New Year. If you spot other Australian-based examples, please let me know...
Rabbit and Cat
SBS Fairfield City Council Canterbury Bankstown Council Museums Victoria
Rabbit
City of Sydney The Star
Royal Australian Mint
Parramatta City Council
Stay tuned... I'll be scanning what other brands are doing this Lunar New Year and will be updating this post to reflect their stance.

Strathfield City Council
