This is something I’ve been picking at for a while now. I posted it on AO3 and figured I’d post it here as well because why not.
Iruka frowned, brow wrinkling in concern. A few weeks ago he would have suspected a genjutsu at work, but then again genjutsu wasn’t exactly his area of expertise. The only reason the academy teacher even suspected genjutsu was due to his belief that the child in question didn’t have it in him to sit so still for more than five minutes at a time. Now, it could be the work of someone else; however, no one else had any reason to do such a thing and, while unusual, it would have come as no surprise to find out it was just a prank. A very quiet, non-exploding, non-disruptive, glitter free, and paint free prank, which somehow made it unnerving and planted a growing seed of paranoia in most eye witnesses. Describing the situation like that sounded really extreme and overblown, but the reality was that Naruto’s drastic change in behavior was more than a little jarring.
It was most noticeable at the academy. Outside of class, the loud exuberant knucklehead was still very much present, harrying the odd civilian and otherwise sowing discord and mayhem. On the other hand, the studious and reserved child that currently sat before Iruka was a complete stranger. Whilst he didn’t necessarily pay any more attention to the lessons than he had before all this, he didn’t waste class time by causing a ruckus or picking a fight with Sasuke, nor did he sleep the day away like some honorary Nara. And, miracle of all miracles, Naruto actually deigned to turn in homework assignments. It was honestly astounding. There was a level of maturity and self-awareness to him that had been severely lacking up until the past month.

As happy as he was for Naruto to be taking his education seriously, every deviation in previous behaviors only served to fuel his worry. Bringing a brush to class would be much too suspicious. No way was he going to let anyone, not even Iruka-sensei, prevent him from learning something so cool.
He continued drawing while mentally reciting the function of each component. This was a simple timed trap seal, meant to freeze an opponent in place for a short period of time. Naruto grinned just thinking of the pranking potential. Or even better, if he was able to place it sneakily, he could use it to finally kick that bastard’s butt in a spar.
Honestly, why was no one teaching this at the academy? It actually made a lot of sense and Naruto seemed to have a knack for it. And wasn’t that a novel idea? That he was actually good at something? It wasn’t like he had any talent for genjutsu, and there was no one he could practice his taijutsu with. Ninjutsu wasn’t so bad, except the bunshin was basically impossible and it was one of those things that they were always tested on. Everything else they were taught involved a lot of reading, which he usually couldn’t make heads or tails of and it only gave him a headache to try, so he didn’t.
In the end, he supposed it didn’t really matter if the academy was teaching fuinjutsu or not, since he was learning it now, and nobody would expect it when he became a master out of nowhere. Because he was determined to master the art of sealing. He wanted it. He wanted it more than his admittedly childish dream of becoming Hokage. Besides, it wasn’t so much the hat that he wanted, but the recognition and respect that came with it. Not to mention the common decency that no one seemed willing to grant to the no-name orphaned demon brat. The treatment he so desperately wanted by becoming Hokage could just as easily be gained by becoming a master in an obscure shinobi art.
Naruto shook off his heavy thoughts and switched to drawing explosive seals. He had to get the basics down or else he’d never be able to move on to making custom seals.
As soon as class let out for the day, Naruto skittered out the door faster than a rabbit with a cat on its tail, entirely ignoring the two sets of contemplative eyes that trailed after him. He raced home bubbling with giddy excitement. In short order he was sprawled out on the floor of his apartment with paper, brushes, and ink. Over the course of the last month his brushwork had improved in leaps and bounds. Now he no longer left ink drips everywhere and his strokes were smooth and even. He smiled in accomplishment at his practice sketches. Maybe when Hinoe came by he could pester her into finally letting him try out the real deal.
“Naruto-kun, you’ve got ink smudges on your face.”
Speak of the devil…
Upon the sill of the window he had left open was an elegant woman dressed in a purple floral kimono, curls of smoke trailing from a thin pipe in her hand. Full lips were painted a blood red, matching eyes highlighted with purple shadow, although one was hidden behind her rich midnight blue hair.
“Hinoe!” Naruto cheered. He jumped to his feet and thrust his paper at her. “Look at this, look at this! I’ve been practicing all day and I think I’ve got it down so can I try activating them now? Please, please, please can I try?”
“So impatient, just like Kushina. You’re always in a hurry,” she chided, but the fond amusement was clear in her voice, so Naruto didn’t take it to heart. Hinoe brought the pipe to her lips, taking a drag, then exhaling a cloud of smoke. “Explain each of the components to me. Let’s make sure all the theory I drilled into your head actually stuck.”
Naruto’s cheeks puffed out in what was absolutely not a pout. “Come on, I can do that in my sleep by now.”
A paper fan appeared out of nowhere to thwack him lightly on the head. “Brat, there’s a reason I made you learn all of that first. This is a dangerous art. Mistakes can be fatal.”
"Fine," Naruto groaned, capitulating and doing as he was told. In all honesty he wasn't that put out. Hinoe was a good teacher and he was so thrilled to actually be learning something that he never complained much. Besides, it was because of her that he was doing so much better at the academy. One of her stipulations for teaching him sealing was that he put at least some effort into his normal schooling. And she was the one who stepped in to help when he struggled with reading.
She nodded in approval at his thorough breakdown of the seal and at last they headed out to forest to practice. They went to the outskirts of Konoha, on the edge of training ground 44. There it was less likely that they'd run into any other shinobi and Hinoe's presence would keep anything else from wandering too close. Naruto had never actually been inside Konoha's famous—or maybe infamous—Forest of Death, but instinct always had him sticking close to Hinoe, fenced off area or not. There was no need to tempt fate, not to mention that there were certain things that could not be stopped by physical barriers.
Naruto was a bit disappointed that Hinoe vetoed his suggestion of testing his exploding tags, however she had a valid point in that the noise could bring unwanted attention. It would have to wait until he learned some privacy seals. Instead, he used his trap seal to practice trapping small animals, rabbits, birds, and the like. Many of them were flighty and quick on their feet, so Naruto had to be careful to hide his presence, then swiftly activate the seal in order to catch them. Only after he had been at it awhile, with a number of failures and successes under his belt, did Hinoe show him how to adjust the seal into a passive trap.
The young ninja-in-training was only slightly miffed that he’d been made to do things the hard way first before being shown a more efficient method. Even he could see the benefit of learning to activate seals quickly on the unsuspecting. Plus, the prankster side of him would always appreciate the masterful use of stealth, surprise, and the delicate art of precision timing.
Armed with a stick and some new sealing knowledge, Naruto sat at the edge of the clearing he had claimed for his own, sketching a newly modified seal into the dirt. He muttered to himself as he went, devoting to memory the new components and their functions.
The chiming of bells coming from everywhere and nowhere at once had Naruto looking around in confusion while Hinoe just gave an exasperated huff. The clearing was just as empty as it had been from the start and there weren’t any people, human or otherwise, visible through the thick surrounding foliage.
“So this is what you’ve been up to. I’d heard that you’ve been coming to Konoha, but I wasn’t expecting this.”
Naruto looked up to see an enormous bull with a horse head descending from the sky. He—at least it seemed like a he, but Naruto didn’t want to assume because it was often hard to tell with yokai—was dressed in a pale lavender kimono with bells and gold rings dangling from his ears.
He had always been able to see them. Yokai. Ayakashi. Spirits. When he was younger and didn’t know better, he used to ask about the funny creatures he would sometimes see wandering into the village. The matrons at the orphanage, who already hated him, didn’t take too kindly to Naruto pointing at and talking to things that didn’t exist to their eyes. He learned quickly not to mention them. Which honestly wasn’t too difficult. They lurked in the shadows of the trees and the deeper parts of the Naka River, along unseen forest paths and in secret groves. Only the brave or the powerful ventured very far into the developed areas of Konoha. Hinoe said it was because even if they couldn’t see the yokai shinobi could still detect their presence to some extent. Despite the tasty meal shinobi made due to their power, those yokai who liked to eat people prefered to go for easier targets.
Naruto shivered at the thought of being eaten. So far, he had only run into a few yokai like that and only one encounter had been face to face. That had been an awful experience.
As a whole, the yokai weren’t so bad and they didn’t mind his presence too much. He had even befriended some that frequented the lesser used training grounds at the outskirts of the village. At least, after they had stopped running away any time they spotted him. But Naruto had kept coming back because he had sensed in them kindred spirits, filled with the same loneliness that he felt day in and day out. His efforts had eventually born fruit and he had gained his first friends.
So far, he had yet to be given a reason to regret that choice. Not even the incident a month and a half ago, even if it still gave him nightmares. But he had made more friends because of it, including Hinoe, so it still counted as a positive thing in his books.
The female ayakashi blew out a puff of smoke that danced and swirled in the light breeze. She asked, “Did you need something, Misuzu?”
Baring his teeth in an eerie grin, the bull yokai replied, “Is there something wrong with coming to visit an old friend?” Naruto wasn’t sure what to make of him just yet, but admittedly that smile was a bit disturbing.
"Uzumaki-sama!" A cheerful voice called out, breaking the faint air of tension that had unintentionally fallen over the clearing. The two chuukyuu popped up from behind some bushes. "We’ve come to visit you again." Wearing a dopey smile, the ox chuukyuu nodded his head in agreement.
The young boy in question stared at them incredulously. "It’s the middle of the day. Why are you already this drunk?"
"Evening is not far off. All the more reason to continue drinking through the night," said Chobihige as if it was the most normal thing in the world. He sat calmly next to Hinoe with sake in hand.
Naruto pointed at him, shouting, "Where did you come from?!" His question went unanswered as more and more yokai showed up to join the party.
"Hey! I'm supposed to be training!" an annoyed Naruto yelled at them.
Too lost in the revelry and the prospect of copious amounts of sake, most of the newcomers ignored the fuming boy. Hinoe, sending a regretful glance towards the others—or rather the sake, compromised by agreeing to help Naruto with his homework. So they sat just off to the side of the revelers and their merrymaking as Hinoe tried to drill some shinobi history into Naruto’s unwilling skull.
From the other side of the clearing, nearly forgotten, Misuzu continued to watch the boy with a curious, searching gaze.

Marinette felt Chat scoop her up, cradling her as he moved.  "Kitt-ty," she mumbled, completely comfortable with him carrying her.  "Where we going?"
She felt his chuckle more than she heard it.  "Bed, Princess. It's late. Way past your bedtime."
She recalled cuddling with him on the couch watching movies.  "You're staying?"
"Yeah," he replied.  "It's our long weekend together, remember?"
"Ooooh.  Yeaaaah."  With the knowledge that he wasn't leaving, that she would wake up to him tomorrow, she was able to relax against him and let sleep claim her again.
The floor was cool under her bare feet as she silently moved through the emperor's summer palace.  In her transformation, the airy skirts and light trailing sleeves of her hanfu had been replaced with a red and black representation of a Jingxi opera huā dàn costume.  Loose vertically striped pants swished around her legs. Two long thin braids hung down against the front of her red shirt while the rest of her hair was coiled at the back of her head in a style she never adopted as herself.  A fan was tucked into her gold accented belt, its long red tassel and the dangling ties of the belt brushing against her pants in a way that was comforting in its familiarity. She'd prefer not to get caught sneaking around at night, but if she was, it shouldn't be a problem.  She was a well-known hero in this guise, and she was effectively masked by white and pink magical opera makeup. Not even her own parents knew of her superhero activities and she'd rescued them twice this year alone.
She paused, seeing a shadow lurking in the room she was heading for.  He was tall, carefully standing at the back of the room, where the open windows wouldn't shine light on him. But her eyes were attuned to the movement, and she saw better in the dark when she was transformed.  She sighed, letting a faint smile grace her lips when she noted the pom on the top of his head. Pausing just long enough to listen, she continued into the room to meet with her partner. She joined him at the back wall.
"Piáo Chóng," he purred.  "I suspected I might find you here."
She reached out and lightly tapped his nose.  His face was concealed behind the magical makeup of the mask of Chong Hēihǔ.  "Of course I'm here, silly cat," she whispered. "I don't deviate from our plans."
He smirked, bowing his head slightly.  "My Lady is so clever."
She loved this relationship, so full of fun and genuine affection delivered in polite social manner.  "I have managed to establish myself among the ladies as sweet and reliable."
He grinned.  "As I said, so clever."  He held out his hand, letting two fingers brush under her chin.
"Ah ah," she said, waving a finger in front of his face.  "No distractions, My Tiger."
He folded his hands together and bowed his head.  "Business first, of course," he said in agreement.  "I have uncovered the first silk strands of the plot against the emperor and his family.  I must unweave them a bit more before I have anything solid for us to work off, but I believe his eldest son is the target."
She swept up one of his hands in her own.  "A thousand blessings upon your family," she murmured.  "Please continue to pluck at those knots." Her fingers ran over the back of his sharp claws.
The world melted away, and she stood beside the Loire River at the besieged city of Orléans, dressed in plate armor that would have felt heavier if not for Tikki.  She held a French banner aloft to flap in the wind while men around her fought. The dull thuds of steel against leather bucklers and shields joined with the sharp crack of bow strings and the shouts of the soldiers.  They were here to free the town of Orléans from its British invaders, to take back French land from the ever expanding British reach. The army had been demoralized after too many consecutive defeats, and losing here was not an option.
Though she couldn't see her partner, she knew the Black Cat was here, following his side of the plan from his place inside the high stone walls of the city.  She could feel his movements as he lurked in shadows, sabotaging the entrenched British forces at every opportunity. Her troops would succeed this day, and she would finally meet her partner outside of the visions her kwami's magic gave her.
The sights and sounds of war faded into the arid heat of the desert, subdued in the dark of night.  The stars were bright in the deep blue black cloth of the sky. She sat cross-legged on the roof of the chapel of the sun, her black-spotted, red linen sheath bunched up around her thighs. The North Palace was quiet tonight, and she couldn't decide if that bode well for them or not.
Her hands fiddled with the red yo-yo that served as her primary weapon as Red Scarab, protector of Egypt.  A faint scratching sound, the familiar noise of claws on brick caught her attention and she looked up in time to see her partner pull himself up onto the roof beside her.
"Good evening, my Panther," she whispered, smiling at him.  The beads at the ends of her many braids clicked together as she moved her head.
He crawled, cat-like, to settle beside her.  The tall gold-lined black ears that came with his transformation twitched and pivoted to catch the sounds around them.  "Lovely Scarab," he said, settling beside her, the belt of his gold-accented, black linen shenti covering his lap. "The pharaoh is unwell.  His mind has taken to madness."
She nodded.  "It is what I feared."
"He has taken to calling the departed mother of his child by another name, and is preparing a great sacrifice to Ra," Panther continued.  "He has acquired a tool of magic." He looked down at his hand, where a silver band wrapped around his finger. "I've not seen its like before.  Plagg tells me that should he cast his spell it will cause great harm and it won't bring back the dead."
Red Scarab nodded.  "Tikki feels the magic.  She worries for the fertility of Egypt and the surrounding nations if it is put to use."
"We will stop him, my love," Panther said, confidently.
She smiled at him.  "You seem so certain, son of Bastet."  She tapped him lightly on the nose.
"With you beside me, I can't be anything else."  For a moment, he closed his bright green eyes, slitted like a cat's and glowing with his magic.  "And perhaps when the threat is past, you will consent to become the wife of a scholar and servant of justice."
She giggled.  "I see you have plans of you own."
"I do," he agreed, leaning over to nuzzle her beaded hair.  "You are welcome to join me in them."
"Then I shall."  The skin of his bare shoulders was warm and soft under her hand as she leaned against him.  She didn't know his true name or identity, and learning his occupation made her far happier than she expected.
Marinette woke with a gasp, strangely both fully aware of who and where she was, yet oddly disoriented from dreams of a hundred past Ladybugs.  In every one, her black cat was by her side. Sometimes things ended peacefully in old age or naturally from illness. They raised children, mourning together for those who did not survive infancy.  In other lives he took a final fatal blow meant for her, and in even fewer she did the same for him.
She was breathing hard, tears leaking out of her eyes to drip onto the duvet she clutched.  She whined, unsure if she was more upset over experiencing Jeanne d Arc's burning at the stake, or the fact that her Back Cat had allowed himself to be captured in cat form, only to be thrown onto the pyre, as self punishment when he couldn't help her escape.
Familiar hands wrapped around her, pulling her to Chat Noir's chest.  He was in the soft t-shirt she'd made for him, and it smelled like him.  Not pungent, but comforting. "Sssh, Mari. I'm here. I've got you," he whispered.  His hands trembled a little, and his breathing almost as rough as her own. "It was just a dream."
She shook her head, unable to speak out of fear that she'd make some horrible howling sound.  It wasn't a dream. She'd bet her miraculous on it. She'd lived the past Ladybugs' lives in her sleep.  She didn't remember all of them, not consciously, she couldn't. But they were all there, to some extent.
Chat kissed her forehead, rocking her in his arms, whispering softly to her until she was calm.  His fingers gently brushed her hair out of her face as she looked up at him from her vantage point resting on his bicep.  "You're safe Mari. I'm here with you, I won't let anything hurt you."
She reached up and brushed her fingers over the edge of his fabric mask.  It was damp and he looked almost as spooked as she'd felt. "Oh Kitty," she whispered.  "My sweet kitty." She bit her lip and tightly screwed her eyes shut, to prevent another round of crying.
"It's time," Plagg said quietly.  He'd taken up residence at the end of the bed.
"I'll get you cheese in a minute," Chat said.
"That's not what I'm talking about," Plagg said with a wry smile.  "You had the dreams. It's time to end the charade."
Marinette reached out a hand to the black kwami, pulling him close to cuddle as soon as he landed on her palm.  "Oh Plagg…" she whispered. How hard had it been for him to lose so many of his kittens?
Plagg purred and rubbed his head under her chin.  "This is what we've been waiting for, Princess. You can tell him now."
"Tell me what?" Chat asked, eyebrows furrowing.
"Why now?" she asked, confused.
"You are each complete now.  You know who you are. Who you were."  He reached out and lightly placed one paw on the tip of her nose.  "You've seen what can go wrong. You understand the importance of caution and planning.  You're ready."
Sniffling a little, she looked back up at Chat.  "I love you."
That brought her a half-smile.  "That's not news, though I'm always glad to hear it."
She shrugged.  "Yeah… I hope you still feel that way after this."  What if he didn't? What if he didn't come back? Tears pricked at her eyes again.  She couldn't lose him. Not again.
"To be fair," Plagg helpfully interjected, looking his chosen in the eye.  "She's been wanting to tell you this for ages. Since she moved here."
"Before," she corrected.
Plagg gave her a glance.  "I stand corrected. She's wanted to tell you since before she moved here.  But we wouldn't let her."
"What?"  Chat said quietly.  "We?"
Marinette put her thumb behind one earlobe, calling his attention to the plain black cabochon earrings she always wore.  "I'm Ladybug."
Chat froze, his eyes positively huge as he stared at her.
"My kwami... Tikki, forbade me from telling you, and… I've felt awful, keeping it from you.  But it doesn't change anything. I still love you. I still want to be with.you." She wanted to reach out and embrace him, but didn't dare intrude upon his space.  "None of this has changed." She gestured between them.
"With all due respect, My Lady, it changes quite a bit," he said.
She flinched, drawing her arms in close to hug herself as she prepared for the worst.
His hand caught one of hers before she could fold in on herself entirely.  "I didn't say it was a bad change, Princess." He brought her fist to his lips, lightly kissing the back.  
She closed her eyes, shuddering in relief.  "I love you."
"And I love you, Marinette."  Moving slowly, he reached up and placed her hand on the knot at the back of head.  "And I know how you feel, exactly. I've wanted to tell you who I am… I've felt so dishonest, Princess."
She offered him a small smile.  "I know you, don't I?" She felt his nod more than she saw it.  "I understand. And I will still love you without this."
"Take it off, please."  His voice was small, as if he expected her to deny him.
She slipped the knot up the back of his head, not looking away from his eyes as she discarded the mask the moment his face was exposed.  "Oh," she whispered, her hands coming up to cup his cheeks. "Oh, Adrien. It's you." It was as though all the pieces of a puzzle had fallen into place, and it was so right.  She beamed at him.  "Of course it's you."  She slipped one hand into his hair behind his ear.
His eyes fluttered closed and he leaned into her touch.  "Please forgive me."
"There is nothing to forgive."  All her warm happy feelings fled and she nearly choked on nothing when she realized all the things that had happened to Adrien, when she suddenly knew the name of the man who had abused her Kitty for years.
His eyes snapped open.  "What? What's wrong?"
She ground her teeth together for a moment.  "I want to kill your father," she snarled.
"I told you," Tikki whispered, nudging Plagg, as she settled beside him in Marinette's lap.
"She's being hyperbolic," Plagg dismissed.
"She's not."  The tiny red kwami met Marinette's eyes.  "Don't think I don't see you plotting murder, Marinette."
"Death is far too good a punishment," Marinette snapped.
"I adore you, Princess," Plagg said, happily.
Adrien laughed, lightening the dark mood that had settled.  "Nice to meet you Tikki." He extended one finger to the kwami, chuckling as she hugged it.  "Princess, can you plot against my father later?" When she met his eyes she was surprised by the joy she saw there.  "I really want to kiss you right now."
"Kwamis out," Plagg blurted, grabbing hold of Tikki and flying out of the room.
"But I can plot later?" she asked, massaging his scalp again.
"Yes."  He leaned in to rub his cheek against hers.  "I'll even help."
"Okay," she agreed.  "Kisses and cuddles now.  Plotting later."

Huā dàn is a traditional opera role.  Huā dàn are young maidens, flighty, energetic, and vivacious, they are known for quick movements and a bit of sass.  Their role is there to brighten and amuse. This is a presentation of a well known dance Qiao Huā Dàn by the dance school I volunteer with 
Chong Hēihǔ is a black tiger character from both a Chinese novel and opera.  You can see his  opera mask paint here .
Hēihǔ is wearing a costume consistent with a wu song hero role because it would be better to fight in than some of the costumes used in the wu sheng and other hero roles.  He's wearing this in black with green 
France Jeanne d Arc and Black Cat
She was burned at the stake and a black cat was thrown on the fire, a common practice for the pyre of a witch.  The cat was her partner, who could shapeshift.  He chose to die, allowing himself to be captured for this purpose when he could not free his partner.
Egypt Red Scarab and Panther
Akhenaten's concubine or lover (known to historians as only The Younger Lady), and the mother of Tutankhaten (later Tutenkhamun) has died and he is bereft. He has taken to calling her by his wife Nefertiti's name (it means "the beauty has come").

Rack and Pinion Steering
A DRIVER steering a car on a twisting road has two distinct tasks: to match the road curvature, and to keep a proper distance from the lane edges. Both are achieved by turning the steering wheel, but it is not clear which part or parts of the road ahead supply the visual information needed, or how it is used. Current models of the behaviour of real drivers1,2 or 'co-driver' simulators3–5 vary greatly in their implementation of these tasks, but all agree that successful steering requires the driver to monitor the angular deviation of the road from the vehicle's present heading at some 'preview' distance ahead, typically about 1 s into the future. Eye movement recordings generally support this view6–9. Here we have used a simple road simulator, in which only certain parts of the road are displayed, to show that at moderate to high speeds accurate driving requires that both a distant and a near region of the road are visible. The former is used to estimate road curvature and the latter to provide position-in-lane feedback. At lower speeds only the near region is necessary. These results support a two-stage model1 of driver behaviour.
Why do some cars respond so well to the driver? Great handling makes you feel safe and in control – and makes panic swerves and steering corrections as effective as possible. The lightest touch of the wheel should direct the steering system effortlessly and precisely. As well as a well-designed suspension parts, it takes a good quality steering system and steering parts to achieve excellent handling. If you’d like to know the anatomy of a steering system and how it supports handling, road holding and driveability, here is an easy overview.
The function of a steering parts
When you rotate the steering wheel, the car responds. But how does this steering system in cars give you a smooth route forward? A group of parts called the steering system transmits the movement of the steering wheel down the steering shaft to move the wheels left and right – although car wheels don’t turn at the same angle.
The popular rack and pinion steering system
In most cars, small trucks and SUVs on the road today, there is a rack and pinion steering system. This converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion that turns the wheels and guides your path. The system involves a circular gear (the steering pinion) which locks teeth on a bar (the rack). It also transforms big rotations of the steering wheel into small, accurate turns of the wheels, giving a solid and direct feel to the steering.
How does power steering affect the rack and pinion?
It’s likely that if you drive today, you’re used to power steering. Contemporary cars, and especially trucks and utility vehicles have a power steering system function – also called power-assisted steering. This gives that extra energy (either hydraulic or electric) to help turn the wheels and means parking and manoeuvering requires less effort than with simple manual force. The rack and pinion steering system is slightly different with power steering, with an added engine-driven pump or electric motor to aid the steering assembly.
So is ease the only benefit of power steering? The system allows you to have higher gear steering and means you have to turn the steering wheel less to turn the wheels further (less steering wheel turns lock-to-lock). It therefore sharpens up response times and makes the steering even more precise. With such busy roads and traffic jams, this means drivers can more safely manoeuvre in close proximity to other vehicles. Keeping tight control at all speeds, in any conditions and in critical situations, will help to avoid accidents.
What are the components of the steering system in cars?
Whatever a car’s make and model, quality auto steering parts support a flawless drive. Premium rack and pinion parts manufactured by MOOG include axial rods, tie rod ends, drag links, centre arms, steering rack gaiter kits, tie rod assemblies and wheel end bearings.
These steering parts are robust and hard wearing enough to provide both strength and durability. Choosing parts which meet OE manufacturer specifications means the whole assembly will be responsive and long-lasting.
The return of four-wheel steering
Beyond the swivel of the front wheels, some cars have a steering system which affects all four. This has traditionally been exclusive to sporty or luxury models, but there’s a growing trend towards the feature in more affordable cars.
A four-wheel steering control unit sits behind the rear axle of the car and affects the rear wheels as needed. Car wheels turn in opposite directions at low speeds, but at high speeds, turning all four wheels in concert helps to maintain stability and prevent fishtailing.
Stating that automotive literature presents surprisingly little helpful information concerning the faults of the steering-systems used on automotive vehicles and that, in spite of the fact that so many of the faults are self-evident, they frequently are overlooked in actual practice, the author includes with the presentation of his own investigations summaries of the views expressed by numerous well-qualified automotive engineers and discusses these steering-gear faults in some detail. Rack and pinion steering systems are not suitable for steering the wheels on rigid front axles, as the axles move in a longitudinal direction during wheel travel as a result of the sliding-block guide. The resulting undesirable relative movement between wheels and steering gear cause unintended steering movements. Therefore only steering gears with a rotational movement are used. The intermediate lever 5 sits on the steering knuckle (Fig. 4.5). The intermediate rod 6 links the steering knuckle and the pitman arm 4. When the wheels are turned to the left, the rod is subject to tension and turns both wheels simultaneously, whereas when they are turned to the right, part 6 is subject to compression. A single tie rod connects the wheels via the steering arm.
Two types of vehicle steering are in general use. The venerable rack-and-pinion system is the simplest and most popular for cars. As the steering wheel is turned, a pinion attached to the base of the steering column moves along a linear-toothed rack to which it is meshed. The arrangement converts the rotary movement of the wheel to a horizontal movement along the transverse axis of the vehicle. The rack is attached at each end to tie rods which transmit the movement to the wheels. This method of steering is positive and provides rapid feedback to the driver. A second steering mechanism, the so-called recirculating-ball system, is used on some heavy trucks and SUVs because of its robustness and greater mechanical advantage. The latter attribute makes turning the wheel easier but, with the advent of power steering, this action is now less of an issue and many heavy vehicles are now adopting rack-and-pinion steering.
Cars with front-wheel drive have much of their weight over the front wheels and therefore it becomes more difficult to turn the steering wheel. This factor, together with the use of wider tyres on SUVs and larger cars, compounds the difficulty to the point that unassisted steering would be almost impossible for many people. Thus most vehicles are today equipped with power steering, a system that is normally operated hydraulically with mineral oil serving as the working medium. A double-acting hydraulic cylinder controls a piston that applies a force to the steering mechanism to augment the effort made by the driver. The pump is operated by a belt-drive off the engine and therefore no assistance is provided unless the engine is switched on. A disadvantage associated with hydraulic power steering is that the pump is constantly running when assistance is not required and this consumes fuel.
An alternative form of power steering is an electrical system in which an electric motor provides assistive torque to the steering mechanism. Sensors detect the position and torque of the steering column and feed the data to a computer that then controls the current to the electric motor. A major advantage of the electrical system is that the degree of assistance can be tailored to the speed of the vehicle, with more assistance at low speeds and less at high speed. Other advantages are: (i) a hydraulic pump, a belt drive and hoses are not required and this leaves more space under the bonnet; (ii) the electrical system is more fuel efficient in that, unlike the hydraulic system, it only uses energy when it is operating.
Some vehicles now have steering on all four wheels. This arrangement was introduced primarily to permit a tighter turning circle and to facilitate parking in a restricted space. It is most useful for truck chassis other parts, heavy goods vehicles and tractors, although it is also available on a few cars. The rear wheels, which cannot turn as far as the front wheels, are controlled by a computer and actuators.
Because thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) behave essentially as conventional thermoplastics, they can be recycled using the same methods. Many TPEs tolerate multiple recycling [3]. The Society of Automotive Engineers has generically classified commercial TPEs to enable their segregation into mutually compatible categories for recycle purposes [4]. In this scheme, TPEs are categorized in the same manner as that used for rigid thermoplastics such as polypropylene and polystyrene.
TPVs are widely used in automotive applications (e.g., weather stripping, rack-and-pinion steering gear bellows, constant velocity joint boots, air master booster door covers, body plugs, interior skins, etc.) and in appliances (disk drive seals, dishwasher sump boot, door seals, and compressor mounts). The used articles and production scrap are simply ground in a granulator, and the granulate is added in relatively high proportions to the virgin material. The TPV granulate is compatible with granulate prepared from TPO. In fact, it was found that the addition of TPV granulate improves the properties of the TPO material [5]. Many automotive manufacturers have started extensive car dismantling programs and are working together with polymer manufacturers to recycle and reuse material, often in “closed-loop” systems, in which the material goes back into the original product [6].
Other recycling routes for used TPE components are not significantly different from the route for other elastomers, such as incineration with energy recovery. The main benefit of TPEs in this context is that they contain relatively little sulfur, with consequent beneficial effects on incinerator flue gas composition.
Although components made from TPEs can in theory be recycled similar to other thermoplastics, they still suffer from the disadvantage that they are not pure TPEs, but have inserts, or they are composites or blends of materials used in overmolded parts. In the case of the largest class of TPEs, styrenic block copolymers, up to one third of total production is used in inherently nonrecyclable applications, such as oil modifiers, adhesives, or bitumen modification [7].
A recent development that allows recycling of materials from overmolded and coextruded parts is the use of magnetic separation. Magnetic separation is a well-established technique used for high-volume separation in mining, aggregate, and other industries. It is also widely used to remove metal contaminants from plastics and rubber. To be applied for the separation of polymeric materials from mixtures (e.g., TPE from polypropylene or other rigid plastic), it is required that a magnetic additive be mixed into the TPE material. The amount of this additive is typically 1%. It has been established that the additive does not have an adverse effect on the physical properties of the material or on the overmolding adhesion. In the recycling process, the granulated scrap is placed onto a belt conveyor and the particles of the resin with the magnetic additive are separated at the end of the belt by a roll with imbedded powerful rare-earth magnets. The particles attracted to the roll are collected in a hopper after they fall away from it. A mechanical barrier, or “splitter”, helps to separate the two particle streams [8].

Support roller group
Composition: It is composed of a stationary support and a rotating roller. Function: Used to support the conveyor belt and the materials on it. The part used to support the branch is called the upper roller group, and the part that supports the unloaded branch is called the lower roller group. 1) Groove-shaped upper roller groupThe groove-shaped upper roller group can be divided into two roller groups, three roller groups and five roller groups according to the number of rollers installed. The more the number of rollers, the larger the groove shape, the smoother the belt bends, and the longer the service life. The three-roller group is the most widely used, and the roller groove angles are 30°, 35° and 45°. The larger the groove angle, the stronger the conveying capacity, which can reduce deviation and material spillage. 2) Lower roller groupFunction: Support and restrain the empty conveyor belt. Structure: Parallel roller group is generally used. When the conveyor belt is longer, in order to prevent the conveyor belt from deviating, there is also a double-roller roller set with a smaller groove angle.
Self-aligning roller group
Function: Used to correct the deviation of the conveyor belt and ensure the normal operation of the conveyor. Reasons for deviation: eccentric accumulation of materials, uneven distribution of tension along the conveyor bandwidth, deformation of the frame, damage to the roller bearing, wind load, etc. 1) Rotary groove-shaped self-aligning roller groupThe principle of centering: when the conveyor belt runs out of direction, the belt gives the idler a force F that is consistent with the running direction, and its component force Fa makes it rotate axially, and the other component force Fr makes the idler roller move axially, thereby urging the conveyor belt to convey. The sliding friction force between the side rollers and the conveyor is consistent with the running direction of the conveyor belt. When the conveyor belt runs in the middle, the sliding friction force on both sides is the same; when the conveyor belt runs out of direction, the sliding friction on the side of the conveyor belt becomes larger, and the conveyor belt is pushed back to the middle position.
Buffer roller group
Function: Installed at the loading place of the conveyor belt to buffer the impact of materials and reduce the damage to the roller bearings. Type: rubber ring type, spring plate type and heavy-duty cushion roller. Advantages: The buffer roller is light in weight and has a small rotational inertia. The special polymer material for roller is light in weight, and its specific gravity is one-seventh of steel. The roller made of this material is about one-half of the weight of ordinary roller, and the rotation inertia is small. It is between the roller and the belt. The friction is small.

  4. Insufficient pressure in the low-pressure oil circuit. There is a certain oil pressure in the low-pressure oil circuit of the fuel injection pump to ensure that the fuel enters the pump cavity quickly, and to ensure that the fuel injection pump needs oil.
