Owning and producing shit is insanely profitable the more you can exploit your workers. Cult leaders want money, and cult members are, per the nature of cults, highly exploitable. Herbal teas and such are heavily based in manual labor that produces an easy to store, lightweight, considered-sort-of-luxury and/or 'morally positive' product.

It unfortunately just sort of works well together.

#other cults also produce and sell shit #it also doesnt help that Celestial Seasonings does in fact make bomb ass fruit infusions and herbal teas #so beyond being cheaply produced and relatively cheaply sold at first it's got an organic leg up in the market #now: im sure theres also reasons specific to these cults that they chose tea #but it is sort of inevitable some of americas cults would produce tea at some point #given how many we have #and the type of labor that goes into growing harvesting and selling tea
