ISU:
the age change proposal for ice dance and pairs passed - now both dance partners can't have reached 21 at the start of the season, which, good- fair enough. though if that was about equality, pairs men now must not have reached 23 while pairs women still age out at 21 🤷🏻♀️
that means someone could turn 23 during the season and technically be competing beside a 13 yo in the same competition. the age gap on a team can't be more than 7 years (16/23 is still a huge difference, let alone 14/21 👀 so i hope gradually they dial this down so it's no more than 4 years in juniors. if two adults want to partner together, fine, doesn't matter if the age gap is larger)
so probably we'll see Nguyen/Giang back in juniors for 🇨🇦 they're entered into the BC/YT sectional competition next week as juniors - we'll see if they're skating their 2024-25 RD for that
Germany's proposal to penalize music tempo changes was denied

Q #164: “Are there any current pairs or dance teams who are impacted by the change of age rules so they won't be age eligible for any category once they go into effect? Like the male partner being too old to compete in juniors but the female partner not yet being eligible for seniors? At one point Green/Parsons would have been affected, for instance”
Hi anon,
Great question. I believe one of the representatives for the US at the ISU Congress raised the concern that the current US Junior champions would fall in that category and that is why he specifically voted for the gradual phase in by 2025. The combination that would land you in “no-man’s-land” would be any woman who’s not 17 by July 1st and any man who is 21 before July 1st. If the rules had been put in place this year, those dates would be any woman born after 1 July 2005 & and man born before 1 July 2001. In 2024/25 those birth years will be 2008 and 2004.
There are no top teams currently in juniors with an age gap more than 4 years I believe. At one point this would have affected Liza Khudaiberdieva (October 2002)/Nikita Nazarov (May 1998) had they stayed together after winning WJC Silver in 2019. As Liza would have to wait 1 year to turn senior and Nikita would’ve aged out. I think even though it’s certainly not the intended effect that this is positive.
You shouldn’t have young girls 13-17yo skating with adult men. It vastly increases the power differential between the two partners and makes things like partner abuse much more likely. A rule that essentially closes that window so you can no longer have 5+ year age gaps if you plan on going senior with the same partner is very positive. Ashley Wagner has mentioned this but currently junior competitions contain everything from middle schoolers through college students, that’s not a fantastic environment for young kids to grow and develop in.
In basically no other conditions would young people 13-21 be grouped together because they’re at such different psychological and physical maturity. I think it would be prudent for the ISU to raise the junior age limit to 14 as well.
