This is legit such a controversial take but, what if the statues in the haligtree aren't depicting godwyn embracing the afflicted twins, but messmer.

As far as we know godwyn was a perfect child, the golden boy. Messmer was afflicted, he was cursed just like the twins, we know messmer had a big ooey gooey heart that was subjected to the plights of others. For God's sake he allowed his men to preserve hornsent culture when they asked him because they felt bad about the whole genocide for no reason thing (don't at me there's plenty of evidence supporting this wasn't about the jars it was never about the jars stop saying it was about the stupid meatball jars). Messmer would have been at the proper age to have been there in their childhoods since we know for a fact he was an older brother figure to radahn, ergo he could have also been an older brother figure to the twins who were cursed just like him. Granted this has absolutely the same amount of plausibility of this being godwyn too! Both are good, I just think it would add a layer of complexity to messmer, since we really don't know WHO this is depicting. There's no names no texts no nothing. We just know it's Miquella and malenia being sheltered by someone.

Also, have to point out, though godwyn doesn't have any statues suspiciously, and the only images we have of him depict him with primarily straight locks of hair.

I'm not saying the statue ISNT godwyn, but it could also absolutely be messmer. Hell, it could be radahn for all we know, but just considering messmer and his character, I could absolutely see him having sympathy and a kinship with his two afflicted siblings especially malenia who also shares that wild red hair....
