Ok, so I can't stop thinking about this.

Whether the Warrimoo may or may not have actually done this it's still a cool story, and made me wonder why no one else has even attempted something similar (particular around the millenium when you could do the 2 centuries thing again).

I spent far too long looking up Pacific Islands cruises and other shipping routes to see what traffic crosses nearby, and because there's no major islands close enough, most ships tend to avoid this spot, hence why no one has claimed the same achievement.

| Side note, does it have a name, like Point Nemo? If not I propse we call it Point Warrimoo in honour of the ship, which itself was named after a place in the Blue Mountains near Sydney Australia, taking its name from the Aboriginal word meaning "eagle's nest" or "place of the screaming white bird".

I managed to find a website that does exact nautical distance calculations, and the best option I could come up with was Marshall Islands to Tuvalu, which would take around 3 days.

Another option from more populated places would be Hawaii to Fiji, which would take 8 days

Personally I'd want to turn it into a Pacific Islands cruise. I'm sure people smarter than me can work out the optimal route, but here's what I came up with

This would take about a month to do, and would need an expert sailor and navigator. I'm by no means either of these, but if I were a millionaire I'd hire someone to take me on this trip in December so I could celebrate the New Year over Point Warrimoo.

Saturday, September 21 - Lautoka, Fiji

Our original itinerary had not had a stop in Lautoka, which is on the main island in Fiji, but rather we were supposed to go to a smaller island tomorrow instead. Although it was not really explained to us, we think that we had to get clearance here into Fiji, similar to our changing plans when we had to get clearance into PNG. Here, though, they had large buses and were set up for cruise ship tours, although I suspect many of us would have preferred a more expedition style experience on a smaller island.

We didn't arrive until around 11 AM, as the Island of Vita Levi is surrounded by coral reefs, and even with a pilot aboard, it took a long time to wind our way along the shore to the northwest corner of the island. Before we entered into the lagoon surrounding the island, we were treated to dolphins off the bow again, surfing the bow wave for about fifteen minutes until they got bored and pulled away. Our weather was also outstanding, with temperatures in the high 70's, lots of sunshine, and moderate to low humidity - like our last stop in Bougainville, we seem to have left the oppressiveness of the tropics behind.

Because of the change in venue, there was an included tour of several spots on this end of the island, and most folks on the ship opted for it. Our first stop was a traditional village where there was a kava ceremony and singing and dancing (yes, once again). The performers were quite good, and did seem to be enjoying themselves - more than in some of the places we have been. When they asked who wanted to try the kava, very few people were interested, but Russ and I both tried it, and it wasn't that bad - sort of like milky dishwater. Kava is made from the crushed root of the yagona plant, mixed with water, and is a mild narcotic, although I couldn't really tell, and has a ritual to accepting and drinking it.

We had just a little time to mix with the locals after the performance before being whisked off to our next stop, which was the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. This is a lovely garden featuring over 2000 varieties of orchids, although of course only some are in bloom at any given time. The garden was originally privately owned by Raymond Burr who lived in Fiji part time for many years, and was responsible for breeding and developing around 1500 new orchid varieties. Naturally, I could have spent all day here, but all too soon we had to move on.

From here we drove down to Nadi, which since it is near where all the major hotels are located, is a tourist shopping area. Here we also had time to "shop" at a "souvenir and handicrafts" store before meeting back at our bus. Many of us went rogue, exploring the local supermarket, pharmacy and other non-tourist venues to see more of the local color. The tour was obviously designed for the more typical cruise ships and not for our expedition ship and our interests.

The drive back took us past many more modern areas, where there were restaurants and nightclubs - once again, I had the feeling that most are for the tourist trade. There were more traditional buildings and businesses nearer our port area. Fiji is definitely more prosperous than the other countries we have visited, but there is still a lot of poverty. Because it is built on a village system, the villages that own land where resorts or hotels have been built have some income, since all non-villagers have to lease property, rather than buy it. The villages that don't have such desirable land have to turn to agriculture leases for crops such as sugar cane, which is a big business here. And the villages on some of the smaller islands lease out fishing rights, mostly to the Chinese.

As a result of the sugar cane, there are fires everywhere as it is easier to harvest after burning, and everywhere we went it was smoky. As a result, although there are some pretty impressive mountains, it was hard to actually see them, including the "Sleeping Giant", shown in my last photo. The water here is crystal clear, however, and on our way in towards port we were actually able to see the ship stabilizers, well below the surface of the water. On the edges of the reef are many small islands, many with small day resorts for fishing or snorkeling, all leased from some village, no doubt. Fiji has become an alternative to Hawaii for many, especially Australians. But the tourism here is more of what I would call "industrial", in that it relies on huge hotels and resorts, rather than local accommodations or lifestyle.

We will experience a different side of Fiji in two days when we visit a smaller atoll island and I hope it is more what I was expecting of Fiji. We have a sea day tomorrow, since it was too far to go in one day and we are not leaving port here until around 10 PM. Since we didn't get back from our tour until about 6:30, we were met on the dock with music and a nice cold drink by the whole hospitality crew (housekeepers and restaurant staff, etc.). They are doing their best to make something better out of a fairly mundane port visit.

Big splash but change in direction

On the 18th of June we were booked in for the splash from the boat yard back into the H10 berth at the Marina. Mai Tai was cleaned, pro speed was applied to the sail drive with new anodes and boot added. The batteries were in place, but needed a few extra days for testing and attaching the wind generator. It was a calm sunny day that we went in and had no problem getting back into boat life again.

That was until we were told to expect weeks of rain in winter and the damp that comes with it. On hearing this we were on the look out for a house to sit in or a cheapy to rent for winter. We met Rodger who was preparing his 52 ft yacht 'Swan' to sail to Fiji in the up coming weeks. He mentioned that his mate has a house in Okiato and would rent it to us for a fraction of other rentals in the area and it came with a car. We went to have a look and I fell in love with this little A frame house nestled in the hill if Okiato, over looking the bay towards Piahia.

We decided to rent this little cottage for 2 months and sail Mai Tai on non rainy days. Perfect set up. The little house is complete with a full kitchen with every appliance you could wish for and warm and comfortable furniture and my favourite thing, the garden. It is extremely overgrown but hidden under the wild Jasmin, that is about to burst into flower this spring, we found lime, orange and lemon trees. Just perfect.

The back veranda faces north so It gets the sun all day and makes for a warm spot on 13 degree days to sit and soak up some vitamin D. But as soon as the sun goes down, it can get really cold.

Life for us now is in go with the flow mode. I see this little stay as a break from travelling and readying ourselves for the next stage in our adventure. We haven't stopped since March 2023 and being in Okiato feels like a home away from home. I've joined the Opua yoga group that was walking distance from the Marina, but from Okiato, I catch the car ferry. One of the ladies from Yoga lives across the road from us so we catch the ferry together with the teacher, Ines. On Fridays, after yoga and a coffee, we go for a walk along the track towards Piahia. Its absolutely glorious walking beside a beautiful water way and chatting about life and its possibilities with these young ladies. Karen is the youngest and then me. All of the others are near 70 or over and they can walk rings around me.

Ines and Ann invited me to come and learn Mahjong. So Ann drove me to Ines's house in Russel, about 10 minutes away. Then from there we walked 25 minutes to the other side of the town to the bowling club, where we played Mahjong. It was very much like rummy to me where sets of tiles should be gathered to form a Mahjong. But the set you make must be in the book of rules and it must be exactly like it or your set is just a made up one. So in order to play, first one must know a few of these sets so they can aim towards the Mahjong hand. Was fun, I would do it again.

On the 10th of July with a few ladies from Yoga and Majong, David and I went to the Russel cruising club for dinner and to see a guest speaker Ann Hill who has sailed around South Georgia Island near Antarctica.

She and her partner travelled around this remote island for about 2 months experiencing the severe weather and rugged beauty of the island. Her talk was both informative and entertaining. I felt like a young sailor in this room of about 90 old salts, one being 97 years young. Most of the experienced sailors in the room had travelled the globe in their yachts, coming to New Zealand 20 or so years ago and deciding there was no place better in the world than here to settle and retire. I am beginning to think they are right.

TWO UNEXPECTED SEA DAYS - 4th April 2024 TWICE - CROSSING INTERNATIONAL DATELINE

We were due to spend 4th April on Dravuni, another Fijian island. However, we were woken at 8am by an announcement from the Captain that the tender operation could not take place due to high winds. Apparently the pilot from the previous evening was still on the ship due to windy conditions! This was very disappointing as we had arrived at Dravuni and so looked out over it at breakfast:

We were due to spend the day on the beach or swimming or snorkelling. The only other activity that had been mentioned was walking up the island’s hill. Anyway we never had the opportunity to try any of it. Dravuni is one of many islands that make up Fiji. On the other side of the boat, there was an even smaller island:

The ship then set off out to sea. The weather had started as bright hot sunshine but as we sailed into the Pacific Ocean, during the day there was at times torrential rainstorms as illustrated here:

The rain cleared the rear pool of swimmers and sun seekers:

We spent the day relaxing reading books, doing puzzles and ensuring high steps by doing circuits of the covered open deck area on deck 7 - the middle of the height of the ship.

We were also interested that there were announcements about turning our clocks back 23 hours at midnight to mark crossing the international dateline. We were told that 4th April would become a 47 hour day. For us we just thought of a second 4th April which ship’s staff didn’t want to say. We were amused that when we obtained a restaurant booking for the second 4th April the written paper said “second 4th April”. Before we came on the cruise we were very puzzled about dates and crossing the international dateline and couldn’t get confirmation about how it was to be handled. All the paperwork said we were embarking on a 13 day cruise which is definitely now a 14 day cruise. Why that couldn’t be reflected in paperwork before the cruise we just do not understand. Anyway we spent the second 4th April relaxing once again. We are now behind UK time by 12 hours instead of being 10 or 11 hours ahead. The two days of sailing meant that we saw nothing but the ocean. There were no ships or any islands for us to see.

But if you’d prefer to base yourself in Nadi, Fiji’s main gateway on the island of Viti Levu, you can easily experience some of Fiji’s best islands on day trips. From the very first Bula! (meaning life, and the go-to greeting here), to the laid-back, archipelago-wide ‘Fiji-time’ that will soothe you out of any stress from home, you can unwind as easily in a resort as on a yacht trip around the archipelago. Especially as smiles crack as often as coconuts here But Fiji isn’t exactly famed for being the cheapest of destinations, and taking private transfers around the more luxurious islands can quickly add up. As such, not straying far from the airport can be tempting. Whether you base yourself on the resort-heavy Denarau Island, pick an affordable hostel near Nadi, or stay at my favourite, the First Landing Beach Resort further up the coast – it has a foot-shaped island and shaded bungalows – these Fijian day trips will allow you to experience everything the archipelago others. From sailing trips on catamarans to scuba adventures and mud-heavy thermal pools, here are all the fantastic day trips I took from Nadi. The foot-shaped island at First Landing Beach Resort Castaway Island An island escape doesn’t get much more pristine than Castaway Island, and for the most part, you’ll need to cough up to stay in one of the private islands’ beautiful Bures and enjoy an indulgent Fijian stay. However, a limited number of day visitors are allowed to alight on these paradisical sands and enjoy everything the resort has to offer. The paradise-like Castaway Island Beach Resort From snorkelling along the coral reefs and strolling through the forested hills to lounging in the shaded pools or sipping a cool one in the bar below Tom Hank’s oar from the film of the same name, a few hours here will have you relaxed and rejuvenated. But don’t get this confused with uninhabited Modrik Island, where the actual film was set, or you might inadvertently end up trespassing here, courtesy of some local fishermen, as I did. Instead, take a day trip to Qalito Island (the official name of Castaway Island) to enjoy everything it offers. You should absolutely book your day trip to Castaway Island in advance, as it’s popular and numbers are limited so as not to infringe on the resort’s guests. But once here, you’ll have no regrets – and it saves you forking out for a luxury suite. Kava Ceremony on Robinson Crusoe Island Robinson Crusoe Island This palm-fringed spec of sand, officially Likuri Island, is a fantastic place to stay a few nights and soak up the island life. Known as Robinson Crusoe Island, the accommodation on offer here is excellent value when compared to some of the other island resorts. Sadly, since my visit a few years back, they have got rid of their dorm rooms, which were a wallet-friendly way to live the island life. Still, the private rooms still don’t break the bank. If you aren’t staying here, then it makes for an excellent late afternoon day trip from Nadi. On the popular sunset sailing visit to Robison Cruise Island, you’ll glide through jungle-shrouded waters before reaching the island, where a serenade of meke dancers and musicians awaits. Fire dancing on Robinson Crusoe Island You’ll have a bit of time to enjoy the island, take a dip, and watch the sunset from underneath a gently swaying palm tree before the evening’s entertainment begins. Including a Kava welcoming ceremony, more dancing, fire performances and a vast buffet cooked traditionally in an underground Lovo. All in all, I found it a really decent value excursion, given everything that is included. Just know that this day trip from Nadi requires a bus transfer that adds an extra hour or so on – the jetty through the jungle-edged waters is a bit away from Nadi itself.

It’s also fair to say it’s a relatively tourist-primed event rather than raw and authentic, but if you want to experience all of the above and don’t have much time, it’s a solid choice for a cracking night out. Head to a floating bar on a day trip from Nadi Cloud Nine Bar This bar is nowhere near the clouds, nor is it near anything else. A large wooden deck, complete with a bar and daybeds, Cloud Nine Bar floats in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by a multitude of cerulean-hued waters. Its main draw is the sheer coolness of being able to sip a cocktail, listen to a DJ, and grab a pizza before jumping off the bar into the bath-like waters below, the pretty Mamanuca Islands in the distance. We rocked up here with our fisherman friends and went onto the floating platform for a few drinks and a quick visit (which, I think, is allowed if you randomly happen to be passing through the middle of nowhere and need a beer), so this might be an option if you don’t want to dedicate a whole day here. However, most people book this day trip from Denarau Island. Given Cloud Nine was so popular, it’s no surprise that a second floating bar now exists, the Seventh Heaven Floating Bar and Restaurant, and day trips to this one can be slightly cheaper. Take a day trip to private Savala Island Savala Island Without a doubt, Savala was one of my favourite islands that we visited on a day trip from Denarau Island. It’s remote, peaceful, and lapped by the most inviting of turquoise waters. On the boat ride here, guitars playing and free beers flowing, I was already in my element, and that’s before I spotted the tiny isle in the distance. With an unlimited, all-inclusive bar, excellent lunch buffet, sea kayaks, snorkelling gear and even a massage tent, you can pamper yourself, tan yourself or head straight into the water for your entertainment. There isn’t much shade here, so pac your sunscreen, but if you want a get-away-from-it-all island escape, book OoLaLa’s day trip to Savala Island. Four of us hired a small boat for a day trip to Bounty Island Bounty Island Bounty Island was the set for one of the first Celebrity Love Island seasons more than a decade ago. Being relatively close to Viti Levu and having a resort, it’s also a popular place to stay. However, if you want to visit on a day trip from Nadi, it’s also possible – and given it only takes around 30 minutes by boat, it’s one of the quickest you can take. White sands, palms and everything else you’d expect are found here. There are also some excellent snorkelling and scuba diving trips off the island, making it a popular easy-access spot for spotting marine life. Families will also appreciate the facilities, entertainment, and water sports that are readily available on this island. You can either book a short day trip if you don’t have much time or opt for this longer day trip from Nadi that sails between a few of the Mamanuca Islands with lunch and water sports included. Hiring a local boat and stringing together sand bars was a dreamy outing Do it yourself! There are so many different day trips from Nadi and Denaru Island to countless other islands that it can be hard to choose, and the costs can quickly add up. An alternative, which we did for a couple of days, was to befriend some local fishermen who were already going out anyway, and we offered a fair price to join them on their fishing trip. These two days were my highlights in Fiji. Not only did we get to chat and connect with the two young guys – and try to help them fish – but we ended up visiting random spots, stopping at tiny little sandbars while they headed off with their rods, and combining a few islands into one day. Stopping at tiny sandbars is a Fiji day trip highlight Nadi’s markets and temples Nadi Town is a relatively sleepy place, but you should absolutely not miss taking a day trip into Nadi itself to see the local fresh produce markets and craft stalls and sip on a criminally cheap coconut.

It’s best to try and avoid the day’s cruise ships are in town, as then it can be crowded. But this is a decent Fiji day outing as you can just hop in a local taxi, no tour needed. Get your driver to also take you to the small Sri Siva Subramaniya Hindu temple, a quick stop will be enough time to visit. My travel buddy Simla and a local artisan in Nadi’s markets Nadi Hot Springs For a different kind of water relaxation, venture to the Sabeto Hot Springs and mud pools. It’s a decent half-day trip from Nadi. After a short drive, you’ll arrive at the laid-back venue where a handful of sellers hawk their local goods, and bubbling hot springs sit nearby. Given the temperature of the springs themselves, the water is filtered into a collection of pools, which you dive into after caking your body in the warm mud, baking it out to dry and then washing it off. Don’t go expecting a full-blown spa-style site, as this is anything but that. It’s just a cool thing to do, and the people working there were a friendly bunch and they have a super playful dog. No need to pay for a high-priced tour, just jump in a taxi and pay when you arrive. If you’d prefer to book a day tour from Denarau Island, then this tour takes in the town’s highlights, including the hot springs, gardens and the temple. Soaking in the Nadi Hot Springs Gardens of the Sleeping Giant Another popular day trip from Nadi is the nearby Gardens of the Sleeping Giant. It’s a lush landscaped garden area with native, colourful flowers and shaded trails around a legendary dormant volcanic crater. You could use your taxi to do both the hot springs and gardens together. Beyond the gardens, and something you might want to book a tour in advance for is the zip-lining and waterfalls located nearby. I didn’t personally bother with this as I’d heard the zip-line wasn’t that impressive and wanted to save my cash. But if you are interested, you’ll find more details here. The peaceful Sleeping Giant Gardens Want to island-hop on a budget? Another alternative, if you want to island-hop without such high costs is to look at Feejee Experience. It’s far from a luxury operator and is more targeted at backpackers, but its travel passes and wallet-friendly options will allow you to visit a selection of islands without breaking the bank. Overall, Fiji is a bit pricey – and flights from Australia and New Zealand can be the biggest investment of the trip. I actually flew from Singapore, and the direct flights with Fiji Airways were surprisingly cheaper from there than the nearer nations. Accommodation doesn’t need to be too expensive though. After my friends had departed, and we were no longer splitting the cost of Bures between four, I went and checked into the very good value Tropic of Capricorn hostel. I only found this place by asking around about hostels, as it wasn’t listed on the major booking site – so do shop around if you want to find a decent deal. Sure, the beach there isn’t one of Fiji’s finest, but it made for a great affordable base to extend my holiday and take a couple more day trips from Nadi to the outer islands. However you explore Fiji, I hope it gives you the same permanent grin that it gifted me. There’s something very special about this archipelago – and they really don’t need to be as expensive as you’d imagine.
