The Gopis Plead with Krishna to Return Their Clothing: Folio from "Isarda" Bhagavata Purana                                                                                                  Opaque watercolor and ink on paper ca. 1560–65
Perhaps the greatest of the pre-Mughal Hindu manuscripts known, this edition of the Bhagavata Purana is admired for its pictorial sophistication, its animated narration, and above all, its sheer joie de vivre. This painting captures the essence of the text, which recounts Krishna’s amorous water-sports with the gopis (cowherds). Krishna sits in a tree, the robes of the women fluttering from his shoulder, as the dark lord reaches out to touch them, all and one together. They gaze with warm love-laden eyes and gesture devotion, praying for union with their lord. Hindu devotional worship (bhakti) had rarely been so passionately expressed in manuscript painting. Stylistically, this series evolved from the Caurapancasika group of paintings and forms a bridge with the emerging hybridity represented by the Tutinama. It displays a complex spatial rendering of a river in landscape, which can be traced to sculptural reliefs of the first century but here flows unchecked off the edge of the page, defying the composition’s own frame.

Maharani Gayatri Devi (as she was styled after marriage) was a particularly avid equestrienne. Maharani Gayatri was an excellent rider and an able Polo player. She was a good shot and enjoyed many days out on ‘Shikars’. Her Highness was fond of cars and is credited with importing the first W126, a 500 SEL to India which was later shipped to Malaysia. Gayatri Devi had one child, Prince Jagat Singh of Jaipur, late Raja of Isarda, born on 15 October 1949, who was granted his uncles’s (father’s elder brother) fief as a subsidiary title. Jagat Singh was thus half-brother to Bhawani Singh of Jaipur. Gayatri Devi was once included in Vogue magazine’s Ten Most Beautiful Women list. Gayatri Devi started schools for girls’ education in Jaipur, most prominent of which is the Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ Public School established in 1943. She also revived and promoted the dying art of blue pottery.she was also known as kutti(little) devi. . #art #inspiration #heritage #vintageindia #portraits https://www.instagram.com/p/CCEG87FJ89i/?igshid=1qihf58tx4nwe

About Bagru
“Bagru, a small village town in Rajasthan, is situated at a distance of 32 kms. east of Jaipur city. Its traditional processes of hand block printing on textiles with rich natural colors have been known for many centuries. With the attraction of foreign buyers for the traditional hand printed textiles, this village hum with much activity today, supplying exquisite printed materials for the export trade.
The hand printers, known as chhipas, came from Sawai Madhopur, Alwar, Jhunjhunu and Sikkar districts of Rajasthan to settle in Bagru and make it their home some 300 years ago. According to a legend, at the very outset, some two families of chhipas were brought by the Thakur of Bagru to settle in Bagru from Isarda, a village four miles from Jaipur and from then on migration of more families of chhipas continued from different places”
- Block Printing and Dyeing of Bagru, Rajasthan by Bijoy Chandra Mohanty and Jagadish Prasad Mohanty
Bagru Print
The Bagru prints in the past these prints were essentially used by the local community. Color and motif often denotes caste, community and marital status.
These prints traditionally were in combinations of deep red, iron black and indigo blue highlighted with green and yellow, and mud-resist used to conserve areas of white ground. In building up patterns, geometrical forms were adopted along with floral, animal and bird motifs.
Even though the traditional printing processes of bleaching resist and color printing and dyeing have continued, many of the natural ingredients have been substituted with chemicals, though some craftsmen still use the original methods. Despite the simplicity of motif and limited color palette, the earthy quality of Bagru prints continues to appeal.
