Old Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns
This time our Russia tour takes you to one of the important cultural and historical centers of Saint Petersburg, Vasilyevsky Island. Vasilyevsky Island is the largest island in Neva Delta in Saint Petersburg. The island contains some museums such as the Naval Museum which is located on the Exchanges Stock Exchange and also the State University of Saint Petersburg and the Academy of Art. The island in the south and northeast surrounded by the rivers of Bolshaya and Malaya, and in the west by the Finland Gulf. The eastern parts of Vasilyevsky Island, “Strelka” ( Spit, literally means Arrow ), just opposite of Winter Palace, hosts the Old Stock Exchange, and two Rostral columns which are considered as a popular tourist attraction of Saint Petersburg. Old Stock Exchange and Rostral columns are the most historic building in Saint Petersburg that was the former stock exchange position in the city. The building is a significant example of the Greek revival architecture. The construction was designed by the French architect Thomas De Thomon and was inspired by the Greek temple in Paestum. The construction began in 1805 and ended in 1810. The primary purpose of creation of building was for the Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange but later used for other purposes. The Old Stock Exchange was created by order of Peter the Great for the Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange, which was inspired by the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

    Rostral Columns
These two columns standing on Vasilyevsky Island and they are as old as the icon of the open arches of the Palace of the Bridge, the dome of the Cathedral of Saint Isaac, and the Cathedral of Peter and Paul, and other monuments of Saint Petersburg. For more than two centuries, they have formed the fundamental part of the city center from the Neva River. They are extraordinarily splendid when the torches above them are lit at the high public holidays which have seven meters of flame. At the base of the pillars, there are statues of four symbolic figures that represent four major Russian rivers – Volga and Dnieper in the northern pillar, and Neva and Volkhov in the southern pillar. The amazing 32-meter high pillars which are designed by Thomon are decorated with water lily statues, sea creatures, and anchors. There are also large bowls on top of the columns were designed to hold oil for burning.
