Catherine lives! AU
Ok so I finally got around to write this thing so here you all go, more under the cut bc it kinda got long
Also if you want me to make a post specifically abt how Catherine being alive would impact the general story tell me and I'll make one for that, too ♡´・ᴗ・`♡
Catherine always knew Montana was like her, even when she was little. At first she was hesitant to let Justin play and spend time with her but after seeing how good they got along and remembering how she never really had friends she decided to let them be.
Fast forward to Montana coming back to Jorvik and Catherine's motherly instincts I immediately kick in. Yes, she hasn't seen this girl in almost 8 years and she's grown up and changed so much. The Montana before her is so quiet and almost desperately tries to She's reminded so much of her younger self, of how lost and alone she felt and decides that she won't let this happen to another girl. Once Montana realizes she posses magic abilities and starts training with Ydris and a WIP oc of mine (it's a bit messy right now kay?) Catherine sits her down and tells her about how they're the same. Obviously Montana asks her for help and guidance, which Catherine immediately shuts down. Montanas initial reaction of anger and confusion leaves after Catherine explains that she no longer associates herself with magic, hasn't used it in years and never was that good at it. What Catherine can do though is make Montana aware of the dangers of magic, to tell her about her own mistakes, the Keepers and the Sisterhood.
And there are times when Catherine is almost scared of Montana. Because Montana isn't like her, isn't afraid to loose control. She's so full of anger and frustration and sadness right after loosing her parents and that paired with uncontrolled power is a dangerous combination. Montana isn't hurting others on accident but rather manages to keep injuring herself while learning. There are so many times she comes back to the stables and Justin and Montana sit in the saddle chamber putting creams on her arms and wrapping bandages around her hands because she burnt or cut herself. She's stubborn and impulsive and acts without thinking things through and clearly struggles with magic.
And yet she makes up for it with her sheer determination to learn, to master this power which allows her to protect what's left and Catherine can't help but be amazed at this young girl. They're the same and yet so completely different.
Of course as soon as Justin starts to get more involved with all the magic stuff Catherine is worried about him. It's not like she wasn't worried about Montana to begin with, but Justin is her son, her baby. It's the first time the two of them ever had a big argument since Justin never really fought with his mom. Even after they talk it out she's not happy with him joining Montana on trips. But after seeing his determination and desire to protect Mo, to be able to return the favor because she always protects them and he desperately wants to keep her safe, to make her understand she's not alone and doesn't have to do everything by herself, even if at times it scares him, Catherine gives in. At least she has the comfort of knowing they're looking out for each other.
Catherine isn't unfriendly to the soul riders either, quite the opposite. It would be easy to be angry at them, to hold grudges and not want a single thing to do with it, but that's not like her. Catherine isn't a hateful person. She wouldn't be angry at kids for something that their predecessors did. Elizabeth and Avalon are a different story of course, but the girls never did anything bad, she doesn't hold any grudges against them specifically. They're just kids, kids who have way too many things that they have to shoulder than anyone that age should. Those girls aren't even in their 20s and are being told the fate of Jorvik and perhaps the whole world is depending on them. That's fucked up, like, severely fucked up.
So Catherine always tells them that no matter what, they can always come to Moorland Stables. Even if she can't do much in regard to guiding them on their Soul Rider journey, she can make sure there is a place for them where they're safe.
It does hurt to see that just like her Montana feels like she doesn't fit in, doesn't belong with them. To see that cycle repeat itself. Yet Montana doesn't seem to be as bothered by it as she had been, which isn't exactly better if you hear the 'I wasn't really able to make friends after we left Jorvik, so it's nothing new' explanation.
I do think she would stay away from Valedale and the Keepers and Elizabeth as far as she can. The only time I can see her showing up again is after Justin got imprisoned and for the first time in her life Catherine is full on willing to throw hands with someone. (She doesn't. She doesn't stop Montana from doing it for her either.)
TL;DR
Catherine is basically treating Montana as her own daughter and being a great at it. She doesn't hold grudges against the current Soul Riders bc they're just kids. The Keepers can go fuck themselves she ain't dealing with them. When are Montana and Justin getting married she'd love to have her as her daughter in law

Summary:
When Wang Can stumbled onto Wu fucking Xie while hiding abroad, he expected everything but being told to play a goddamn honeytrap on the man!
Sex he could deal with, but emotions were not supposed to be a part of this.
-
The low roar of the engine as it made its way through the desert sounded oddly loud in the early dawn. The sand had started picking up the silver from the horizon, widening around him as he stared ahead through the windshield. Wang Can stared at the road stretching ahead, seeming almost limitless in the faint light, and stepped on the gas, the whine of the engine drowning out all of his thoughts.
He was still feeling faintly queasy, so he rolled down his window, letting the cool air hit him in the face, and didn’t roll it back up when he started feeling a little better. The car seemed suddenly small with the windows up. He still wasn’t sure whether it had been the right decision to leave at night instead of waiting for Wu Xie to wake up and then leave in the morning. It had been hard, picking up his clothes from the bed in the dark and getting dressed as quietly as possible, but it would have been even harder if he had had to look at Wu Xie’s expression while he dressed, then still make the decision to leave. No, it was better this way. He wasn’t stealing away like a thief in the night, he was just making… strategic choices. Choices which he could follow through without risking them being waylaid by his own unreliability. Because that was what he was when facing Wu Xie - unreliable. He would have had to leave anyway, there was really no point in dragging this out anymore than he had to.
Tumblr media
He shifted a little on the seat, trying to get comfortable despite still being sore from being fucked only hours before, and he clenched his thighs reflexively as he remembered that. There were a few more hours of driving ahead of him, and he tried to focus on that for now.
It was only much later that Wang Can realised that he had left the headlights on even once the sun was up. It frustrated him, and he swept his gaze across the dashboard, checking if there was anything else that had escaped his notice, and saw the pack of wet wipes sitting in a corner where he had obviously forgotten to put it back under his seat. The wipes made him think of Wu Xie, and he reached out with one hand to get at them, trying and failing to reach them, before letting them stay there for the time being.
They had reached the meeting place where Wu Xie’s backup was supposedly waiting. Wang Can was curious as hell, but managed not to ask. He told Wu Xie he was going to leave the next day. He told him he didn’t want to talk. He preferred sex, it so much easier that way, just flesh and sensation.
And he did leave in the morning.
Just… earlier in the morning than he might have implied.
It was easier to focus on what he was doing. On making sure no cars were tailing him, on keeping track of his fuel, or the occasional speed trap.
He stopped for food twice. Once at a gas station to buy a hot dog wannabe, and the second time by a small trailer parked at the edge of a side road leading off the highway towards some sort of small town. There were plenty of other cars - all local - parked on the side of the road, people eating from small plastic bowls while leaning against their cars.
The stew was phenomenal, tasting all the more amazing with half of a fresh baguette. He ate in his car with the AC blasting full force, and tried to ignore the papayas piled on turned over crates beside the trailer and the boy selling quarters of them for a few coins, using a large knife to skilfully cut them open with one whack and scraping the seeds into a bucker by his feet, the breeze carrying the scent towards him and irritating him to no end.
He switched the AC to internal air circulation and was oddly glad for the amount of spice in the stew, which made his nose run and him unable to smell anything.
A few hours later, Wang Can was pulling up in front of the street where Lao Shen lived, and, even as he killed the engine and picked up his bag, he glanced out through the window to see if there was anyone around whom he recognised. Coming here was a risk, but he hoped the information that Wu Xie was alive hadn’t yet reached any of his handlers, and he had to get the documents he had stashed here. Money, equipment, those he could deal without, but the documents would be so very hard to get, and those he had here were acquired through a local freelance contact not exactly Wang sponsored, so, to him, in the situation he was in, they were priceless.
He got out of the car and walked up to the front entrance, feeling the back of his neck tingle from the way two mercenaries whom he hadn’t seen before looked his way as he entered. Of course there would have been a dozen new recruits during the time he was away in the desert, but even still, Wang Can watched them as he made his way through the open hall and towards the stairwell. He walked over to his room, which was at the very end of the corridor, turning the key in the lock and pushing in without making too much noise. It smelled musty inside, and he flicked on the light switch and immediately made his way to the bed, looking around once to check that everything was in its place.
Dropping to a low crouch, Wang Can peered under the bed, running his fingers along the edge, then moved them further inside until he felt the familiar shape of the package underneath. Wang Can ripped off the tape holding it in place and let it drop into his hands. He returned to the desk to open it and see what he could use at the moment. He didn’t want to risk damaging the documents, so he brought out his combat knife and sliced it open at the top, then scattered the items out on the surface of the desk.
“You know, Hans must have liked you, because he actually tried to cover for you when I called.” Lao Shen sounded tired, the characteristic rasp of his voice more pronounced than usual.
Wang Can let his hands drop on the desk as he slowly looked around.
“Don’t move,” Lao Shen said, the distinct sound of a safety being pulled back echoing in the quiet house. “I’m too old to get into a hand to hand altercation with you.”
“Lao Shen,” Wang Can said slowly, watching the man silhouetted in the doorway.

steel heart: — [ soulmate au ]
Tumblr media
pairing: kang yeosang x reader
wc: 5k
genre: trash
notes: some swearing. set in wave-era. the early 90s? this was supposed be a long, slow-burn kinda fic, but in my defense i suck ass at strangers-to-lovers, so. yes. not proofread bc idc.
summary: yeosang took joy in pickpocketing all of the naive tourists in town, until he realized he stole his soulmate’s wallet.
The pads of your fingers gently brushed along the row of cat food cans, your orbs flickering to each one as you squinted in concentration. Picking a can up, you observed it curiously and failed to notice a shadow loom over your figure from behind. A hand grasping a can above your head startled you, and you swiftly turned to glare at the person invading your personal bubble.
The stranger paid you no mind as he walked away, can in one hand and skateboard in the other. You scoffed, opting to silently glare holes into his back before turning around to continue your search, vehemently spitting out, "Rude jerk."
After filling your cart with all the necessities, you made yourself over to the checkout. You fished for your wallet from your bag, brows furrowing in confusion whilst failing to locate it. You were absolutely certain you didn't leave it at home.
Your felt your stomach practically drop at the memory of the man, head snapping up to glance around your surroundings frantically. Was he still here? Had he taken it? Had you accidentally dropped it somewhere in the store?
With an embarrassed smile, you hastily explained your situation to the unamused cashier and excused yourself to take a look around the store. Half an hour ticked by, and you're sure you've looked through every aisle about three times each, but your wallet was nowhere to be seen.
And to think your new life here was sailing smoothly.
Trudging back home begrudgingly, you made a silent note about the man's appearance. It didn't help that you only caught a glimpse of his backside, but you only had chestnut brown hair and a skateboard to work with. It wasn't much, but it was something at least.
"Don't give me that look," you scolded your cat gently, "I'll bring you tuna another day."
The gray feline gave you a blank stare before curling against the windowsill.
Tumblr media
In all the days he's lived, Yeosang thinks today is most likely his worst. He pays no mind to the scrambling and angry Seonghwa, who is trudging around the house with an apron and gloves, grumbling (read: yelling) to himself about how the place looks like 'a disgusting man-cave that even a pig would be ashamed of'. Sure, the coffee table and kitchen were always littered with half-drunk, chipped coffee mugs, used tissues, torn magazines, San's cat treats, and random phone chargers, but in all honesty, it wasn't that bad.
Also, Yeosang had a major headache, and Seonghwa's nagging really didn't do anyone any favor. And quite frankly, he didn't give a rat's ass; He had other important matters to attend to.
"Wow," a loud laugh rings throughout the large living room, "You've royally fucked up this time, haven't you?"
"Who fucked up?" Mingi asks from the kitchen. He carefully stirs a pot of noodles while his blue haired companion stares impatiently from over his shoulder. If the lack of hygiene didn't kill them, it'll be the sodium instead. That, or San's crumb-filled, backwash water bottles.
"Yeosang fucked up," Wooyoung replies in amusement at his friend's dismay. The brunette picks his head up and gives the laughing boy a menacing look.
"Shut up," he grumbles, a hand running through his locks in frustration, "They don't need to know."
"What don't we need to know?"
As if on cue, a redhead plops down onto the sofa beside Wooyoung and a snickering San. There's some suspicion in the tone of his voice, and Yeosang doesn't like it. Hongjoong peers at the two in question, his eyes then studying the look of betrayal on Yeosang's features.
The brunette bristles angrily from his spot, "Don't say it-"
"Yeosang apparently stole a wallet," Jongho mumbles quietly from his spot on the floor. He squints in concentration at the word puzzle below him, not paying the older boys any mind.
Hongjoong quirks a brow, not quite understanding, "Okay? But doesn't he do that daily? What's the problem?"
Yeosang shifts his annoyed glare to the giggling San.
"Apparently, the wallet belongs to his soulmate," San smiles deviously, quickly snatching the brown leather item from the coffee table to showcase to Hongjoong, "See? Same birthmark and all."
Hongjoong's eyes widen as he assesses the identification card within the wallet, his jaw going slack.
Mingi noisily slurps his noodles while entering the living room, Yunho trailing behind him not too long after, "Oh, wow. Yeosang really did fuck up this time," he says with a mouthful of noodles. He and the blue haired male share a look of amusement, before both erupting into fits of laughter.
The brunette dropped his head once more into the safety of his arms, shoulders slumping in defeat at the sound of the other boys' laughter, "Why me?"
Tumblr media
Another week and another paycheck later, you finally had enough for a recent trip to the market. You peered down at your work attire, grimacing at the embarrassing sight of red sauce stains. It'll be a quick run, so maybe nobody will take notice.
Grabbing a few cans of cat food and other items, you grimaced at the heavy weight of the hand cart straining your muscles. You sighed gently, turning to walk into another aisle when a blur of man invaded your vision. A heavy weight sent you flying to the floor, the items in your cart spilling and rolling down the aisle as the stranger groaned atop of your frame.
"Shit, I'm sorry-"
Your mind took a few extra seconds to process just exactly what occurred, and when you blearily took note of the flipped skateboard to your left and the mop of brown hair invading your vision.
A pair of wide eyed brown eyes met your own, and you silently gaped at the handsome stranger sprawled on top of you. You gaze at him as if you truly saw the sun for the first time, utterly captivated by the way his eyes widen ever so slightly. Swallowing thickly at the close proximity and the soft puffs of his breath fanning your burning face, you study his features intently, "Oh, wow.. you're.."
You really don't think you've ever seen a man as handsome-
You suddenly gasped.
"You!"
The man hastily sat up, eyes wide and mouth agape as he wordlessly took in your disheveled appearance. Before he had the chance to open his mouth for an apology, you fisted the collar of his shirt, pulling him closer to assert dominance, "You took my wallet, didn't you?"
Instead of replying, he casually brushed the hair from your face and leaned forward to gaze at your left eye, his own widening at the sudden sight. You hastily slapped his hand away with a scoff of disbelief, "What in the hell do you think you're doing?"
"Your birthmark.."
He suddenly snapped out of his train of thought, eyeing you in mild amusement while digging into his back pocket for an item. When you caught sight of the familiar brown leather of your wallet, you released a gasp of disbelief, giving him an accusatory look of anger, "I knew it!"
"I was looking for you actually- to return it," he curtly started, brows quirking up as you quickly snatched it from his hands. He gives you a brief glance, a glint of amusement in his eyes, before he stands and offers you a hand, to which you stubbornly ignore. You hurriedly stand and save the small crumb of dignity you have left. You quickly study the inside of your wallet, brows knitting in confusion at the untouched money.
"Cut the bullshit," you scoffed, dusting your uniform and shooting him an unamused stare, "You stole it—" you blinked down at the skateboard before returning your hard stare at the male, "Who even rides that thing inside- I- nevermind."
You ignored his attempt at helping you pick up your items off the floor, defensively snatching the canned goods from his hands, "I don't need your help! You've done more than enough!"
"I'm Yeosang," he hesitantly offered his hand. He towered over your frame with an awkward smile.
"Yeah? And I don't care," you grumbled, turning away to saunter off to the cashier. The smile instantly vanished from his features, and he reached over to grasp your elbow.
"Wait-" he calls after you, "Give me a minute to explain!" He tugs you back, and you nearly stumble against his chest.
In all fairness, you've just found the thief who stole your wallet, and you quite frankly don't think he deserves any form of respect whatsoever.
You attempt to wrench your arm from his grasp, but he only tightens his grip with a determined expression on his flushed face.
"You have five seconds to let go of me, or else."
Tumblr media
The fumes of Hongjoong's nail polish in the air and an obnoxious splutter of laughter greeted him once he stepped foot inside the large home. Why did he ever agree to live with seven other monsters?
His brow twitched in annoyance.
Three heads from the living room turned to gaze questioningly at the frustrated brunette.
"What the hell happened to you?" wheezed an amused Wooyoung from the sofa. Yeosang wanted to wipe that stupid smile off his face and-
"I take it things didn't go well for lover boy," San grinned from the floor, hands occupied with running along his cat's fur.
"Got his ass handed to him by his soulmate, you think?" Jongho added casually whilst adjusting his posture and clicking away at the remote. The other two snorted with amused laughter.
"Aren't soulmates supposed to be infatuated with each other at first sight?"
"I don't know, San. Maybe Yeosang's case is special."
"I mean, he did steal-"
"Can you three please just shut up," he seethes, rummaging through the freezer for a bag of frozen vegetables. He simply walks past Yunho's confused form in the hallway, grumbling about how he doesn't want to talk about it.
Tumblr media
You thought you had seen the last of that pest, but the very next day, you practically choked at the sight of the male walking into the coastal cafe you worked at.
"What are you doing here!?"
"Y/n, wait-" he grimaced, hands raising up defensively, "Give me a minute to explain."
He even had the audacity to dodge your question.
"How do you know my-" you gave him a puzzled look, before your expression darkened, "Oh. Right. You stole my wallet, of course you snooped through my ID."
He gave you an awkward smile, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly, "I forgive you for giving me a black eye."
He notices your dumbfounded look.
"Huh. I don't recall ever apologizing to you," you begin, "And I never told you where I work, either. You've been stalking me, haven't you?"
"No. You were wearing the uniform of this place yesterday actually," he points a matter-of-factly. Clearing his throat, he peered around, thankful at the lack of customers this early in the morning, "I uh.. I think- I think you're my soulmate."
You pause your ministrations.
"Come again?"
Rolling his eyes, he sighs, shoulder slumping as he repeats himself whilst pointing to his left eye, "I think we're soulmates. You and I share the same birthmark and-"
A loud laugh escaped your lips, "You are most definitely not my soulmate. Birthmark or not," you turned to assemble utensils and napkins, fully disregarding his presence, "I'm not interested in thieves. Now if you'll leave me alone, I have some work to do."
"But you felt a connection too, didn't you? Yesterday, in the market-" he drawled in amusement, leaning over the countertop in a teasing manner, "I know you feel it when you look at me."
"The only thing I feel when I look at you is a mind-splitting headache," you grumble while adjusting the radio station to your liking.
A minute of silence passes. His face scrunches in distaste.
"What on earth is that insufferable noise?"
"That's called rock music." You roll your eyes, "Now leave me alone."
You take sudden interest in the dirty speckle you find on one spoon, and maybe if you stare hard enough at it, he'll disregard you and leave.
Your head perks at the sound of a chair dragging against the floor.
"Serve me."
"What the hell did you just say?" you spluttered belligerently, turning around with a look of pure disbelief. Your eye twitched at the sight of him taking a seat so casually on one of the booth chairs. "You think you're so funny, don't you?"
"I honestly don't, but—" He studied you with humor in his eyes, his fingers drumming along the wooden countertop, "my friends say that I am."
"I don't know who you think you are, but you-"
"A customer."
"Oh, piss off," you give up and turn to continue wrapping pairs of utensils together, "I'm not serving you."
"Is everything alright there, y/n?" called the tiny, elderly lady from the back, "Do we have a customer already?" Your head turns to eye the small, gray-haired woman exiting the kitchen, "Oh! A handsome fellow. What would you like to drink, young lad?"
Your eyes widen and your heart nearly drops to the floor.
Your orbs turn to slits as Yeosang gives you a sleazy smile, "Coffee for now, actually."
The poor napkin crumples into a wrinkly mess in your fist.
Oh, this bastard. This slimeball. You'll make him pay.
"Y/n! Take the man's order and start brewing the coffee!"
"Yes, Mrs. Lee!" You turned back to give the brunette a sour look, "The faster you order, the faster you'll leave. So what the hell do you want?"
Tumblr media
The next day was much busier than the last.
You're particularly disturbed by the way two males stare at you like deer in headlights every time you pass by their table. They're young looking, maybe around your age. Kind of handsome, too- but they really don't know how to be discreet in the slightest.
Tired of the staring, you pause suddenly, giving them a look of concern as they suddenly dart their eyes and find extreme interest in the salt and pepper shakers in between them, "Is everything alright here?"
For a moment, they stay quiet.
"You're fine," the black haired one replies with a delirious smile, his head resting in his palm. He startles as the blonde elbows him in the side with a harsh whisper of Wooyoung!, and he jumps upright, back stiff and voice growing louder, "Uh! I- uh, I mean- it's fine! Everything is fine!"
"Okay.." you slowly draw out with furrowed brows.
The blonde grimaces in embarrassment, shielding his face with his hand as he looks off to the side in shame, "Can you at least try not to embarrass us?"
"In my defense, Yeosang never said his soulmate was that hot in person!? I could've used a warning, y'know?"
The bell on the door jingles and immediately catches your attention. You walk to the front with a smile only for it to instantly fall at the sight of the familiar mop of brown hair.
"Not you.." you sigh, your head in your hand as you stare in dismay out the window, "Why does the universe hate me?"
"Why are you complaining?" He quipped back with a playful bite, "Weren't you the one staring at me all day yesterday?"
"I was making sure you weren't going to steal anything," you narrowed your eyes at his growing smirk. He leans over the flaky, wooden podium and simpers at the sight of your panic stricken face, "Stop, you look like a creep."
"I know a liar when I see one," he sighed with a shake of his head. Reaching over to pluck out a stray fuzz of dust from your hair, he shoots you a determined frown, "The only thing I'm ever going to steal from here is your heart."
"I- that's kind of gross. Flirting is against the law on these premises," you stutter out, brows furrowing and nose flaring. You refuse to give in to his flirtatious remarks. You're also thankful the podium conceals your wobbly legs.
"Who the hell made that stupid rule?"
"Me. Now what do you want?"
"Such welcoming service skills you have there," he mumbles sarcastically with a roll of his eyes.
"Let me guess. You want chicken and a soda, right?"
Across the room, the two boys shared a quick look before one leaned over to whisper in the other's ear. They both nod in unison, before throwing you knowing grins and snorting as they munched quietly on their food.
"Correct," he says with a steady cold voice, "And a body-bag if you have any, please."
Before you processed his words, he sauntered off to the table of the two boys, their complexions paling at the sudden angry demeanor of the brunette. His hands quickly reach forward to tug both of their ears as he quietly berates them.
"I told you not to come here!" he ignores the way Wooyoung laughs and whines in protest as he's practically pulled off his seat by his ear.
"We're not doing anything! We're just eating!"
"Eating my ass, you're-"
"Oh, gross. I'm not gonna do that. Maybe you should ask y/n-"
You and other patrons stop to gaze at the commotion at the back of the cafe, and you roll your eyes at the disturbance, before walking back over to another table to collect the money and bill.
A few minutes pass and kitchen bell rings. You look back to see the fried chicken plate steaming on the countertop, along with a large glass of bubbling soda.
The duo discreetly peek up to stare at your form, only to startle at the unwavering glare from Yeosang.
"Fried chicken and a large coke?"
"Mhm," Yeosang meets your eyes, and you internally pester yourself at the sensation of your cheeks and ears flaming. How absolutely dare he make your stomach churn like this, "Thanks, y/n."
"Say, y/n. Are you new to these parts? I wouldn't forget a pretty face like yours if I saw one," mused the black haired male. Yeosang threw a hard stare at the younger, and the latter shrunk a bit in his seat, the same mischievous smile unwavering on his features.
"I moved here about a month ago," you stated simply. A moment ticks by and the trio argue in a hushed manner.
"Well, we'll take our leave now!"
"Good luck, Yeosang!" the blonde called out suddenly, throwing a thumbs up in the air whilst hastily making their way out of the cafe, the little bell signaling their departure.
His eyes glance at you momentarily, before he clears his throat and looks away.
Your eyes narrow suddenly at the brown haired man.
"You're paying for their lunch, right?"
He chokes on a bite of his chicken.
Tumblr media
"Where are you going?"
"Out," Yeosang says hurriedly, fingers stumbling as he attempts to tie his laces.
"Where?" presses Wooyoung with a large smile.
Yeosang doesn't reply and instead throws open the coat cabinet to look around for his ripped, acid-wash jacket.
"Guys! Yeosang's treating us at y/n's cafe!"
Excited jeers come from some of the rooms, and Yeosang can only stare in utter horror and disbelief at his best friend.
Today was definitely going to be the worst day of his life.
Tumblr media
A week passes by, and you suddenly catch yourself feeling almost disappointed that Yeosang hadn't come to visit you.
You want to slap yourself for having such thoughts, and take out your frustrations by wiping one of the tables aggressively.
And the bastard was spot on about that stupid feeling you got in the pit of your stomach at the mere thought of him.
But, you were keen on wanting nothing to do with him.
Not after the trouble he put you through.
Soulmate or not.
Besides, he was technically a criminal. Sort of.
He had a charming smile though. And really pretty lips.
And maybe you found him to be the most handsome man you've-
"He's not handsome!" You blurted to your reflection on the wet table. A table of customers feet away pause their conversation and give you a look of bewilderment.
"Uh," a voice pipes from a few feet away, "Table for eight, please?"
Your heart suddenly leaps at the familiar voice and thw corners of your lips perk up in happi-
Pausing, you internally scold yourself for being unable to conceal your excitement.
This stupid attraction you had towards him left your mind scrambling for coherent thoughts- and curse that feeling of your stomach doing back flips. You fight the urge to punch your gut to rid yourself of that disturbing sensation.
You internally groan, not even bothering to turn around to know who had just spoken. You stand up straight, clearing your throat and awkwardly folding the wet towel in your hands. Yeosang stood at the entrance, an unamused expression on his face as the other seven behind him nosily peered over each other's shoulders to spare you a curious glance.
"Uh," you begin, looking back at the empty tables, "You can sit right here. I'll go grab some menus."
As the eight men made their way to the table, you overheard one laugh loudly to the others, "Wooyoung was right! Y/n is pretty cu-"
A jerk underneath the table and loud yelp caught your attention, and you instantly threw Yeosang a look as the other boys timidly settled in their seats. He caught your gaze and rolled his eyes.
Oh, the nerve he had.
And to think you actually missed his presence.
You learned that the seven other boys were a loud bunch, often saying something to fluster and piss off the brunette. Especially when you were in earshot. And, sweet heavens, they can eat.
Your arms were practically sore from the amount of times you walked back and forth carrying their orders.
You watched as Yeosang finished with his meal and leaned against the adjacent wall, arms crossed in annoyance and face turned to the side to stare out of the window. Your eyes study the others before flickering back at him, and you can’t help but feel a small, knowing tug of want in your chest. You instantly straighten up at the thought, shaking your head in dismissal, before walking over to collect some of the empty plates.
"Would any of you like some dessert?"
A blue haired man wiggled his brows.
"Yeosang wants some, isn't that right-"
Another kick and another glare.
"Actually, we'll just have four cheesecakes if you don't mind."
Ah. Finally. A decent, well-mannered being really does exist.
You can immediately discern that the red-headed man, despite being the smallest, held a leader-like aura to himself, given how the other boys suddenly fell quiet when he spoke. They look amongst each other and nod in agreement.
When the boys wrapped up and fought amongst each other about the payment, your shift neared its end. You nodded with a polite smile as they filed out the door with boisterous cries of 'thank you, y/n'!
"Sorry," a voices suddenly says, and you give the brunette a quizzical look, "If they were too loud.. or embarrassing."
"That's okay," you shook your head and shrugged lightly, "It wasn't a big deal. I'm used to loud customers."
"Right. So, uh.." he pursed his lips, words dying out in his throat as he glances around the cafe with nervous eyes, "Thanks- ah, for the food. See you soon!"
Before you had the chance to reply, the bell chimed and you were left alone in the cafe.
Tumblr media
"You have a cat!?"
Your nearly jump out of your skin at the loud remark in your ear, and you immediately spin around threateningly.
Hovering behind you were those same two boys from the other week. You mentally make a note to find an ENT doctor soon. And perhaps a cardiologist.
"Yeah-" you squint in confusion as the black haired male leans forward to study your features. You gently push his face away with an uncomfortable grimace, "What are you doing?"
"You really do have the same birthmark as Yeosang, I can't believe it."
"Yeah, neither can I," you hum sarcastically, "Now if you'll excuse me, I have a cat to feed."
"What's your cat's name?" The blonde practically bounces in his step as he follows you into another aisle. You want to ask why he's filming the rows of snacks with a small video camera, but you decide to save yourself the headache and not bring it up.
You peer back at the duo with a look of disbelief, "Why are you following me?"
"You're interesting."
"Right."
"We should really have a cat play-date. Is your cat a boy or a girl?"
You sigh as you place a bag of chips into your cart, deciding to amuse them for a brief moment, "Pepper is a male."
"Great! Byeol needs a man," the blonde, San- you think, nods in excitement.
"What kind of a friend are you? Set up your friend before you set up your cat," scoffs Wooyoung with an amused snort. His hands grab at the large bags of barbecue flavored chips, and you contemplate giving the back of his head a whack when he sets them into your cart.
They continue to follow you through the aisles, and while a small part of you wants to tell them off, another part of you can't help but laugh in amusement and endearment at their antics and bickering.
Once you've finished shopping, you bid them a farewell, handing Wooyoung his chips and strolling over to the cashier. Your head suddenly perks up at the commotion over by the fruit section, and you only can stare in bewilderment at the ruckus the other boys create whilst shopping for necessities. A store employee stares nervously as one of the boys juggles a bundle of bananas and oranges, while another nearly stumbles back from the other two dancing aggressively in the aisles. You wonder if this was a regular occurrence, and judging by the way the manager walks by without a care in the world, you conclude it indeed is.
You step outside afterwards, placing the bags into your bicycle's basket, before mounting it and debating whether to look back into the market at the rowdy bunch.
Your eyes catch Yeosang staring at you, and bite your cheek to prevent yourself from smiling. He's riding that damned thing again, and he pauses for the briefest moment to give you a wave.
You find yourself mindlessly waving back, and you abruptly stop once you realize your actions. You hastily throw your arm down to your side and attempt to glare in his direction, but he's already looked away with a large smile plastered on his features.
Tumblr media
Most days working at the cafe were fine. People ate, some lingered longer to catch up with friends and play round of card games, and others came to take advantage of the happy hour specials.
But then there were some days you wanted to throw all your dignity in the nearest disposable bin, and wrestle down obnoxious patrons.
You huffed in anger at the sight of an empty table.
What kind of grown up decides to dine and ditch?
Isn't that what... children do?
It's when you stack their empty plates in your hands and turn towards the kitchen do you spot Yeosang walking towards you.
"Now is not the time," you start, hoping your annoyance isn't that obvious.
He silently hands you a wallet.
You quirk a brow, setting the plates down onto the table, "That's not mine?"
"Open it," he says with a roll of his eyes.
You swear if he does that again, you'll roll his head.
You furrow your brows and snatch it out of his hands. Your eyes widen at the picture of the very same man who left without paying, and you instantly shifted your attention to the brunette, "You did not just.."
"I'm sure all that cash is triple the amount his lunch costs," he replies with a wink, "It's no big deal."
"I can't," you swallow, shaking your head and handing him back the wallet, "I can't take this. It's considered stealing."
He gives you an unimpressed look.
"So?" he reaches over to flick your forehead, earning him a glare, "Stop being such a goody two shoes. He stole your service, so you steal his money. It's only fair, right?"
"I'll just take the amount he owes.." you speak unsurely, brows knitting in contemplation. He hands you a few bills, and you nod, "Yeah. This is just enough to-"
"And a tip."
He shoves the remaining money into your apron and your hand flies to smack his arm in shock, "No! I said-"
"Yeah, well I said you deserve a tip!"
"It's not my money!" you scold him.
"I stole it, so it's considered mine now, and I want to tip you! Stop being so stubborn, and just accept it!"
It's when you stop struggling do you notice the extreme proximity of the disgruntled male. He's so unbelievably close that you can make out the borders of the birthmark that mirrors your own. You don't waver as you stare back him with widened eyes.
"Y'know, you're kind of cute when you're mad," he begins sheepishly, eyes narrowing in thought as he inspects your features, "Uh. Since you're new to town, maybe I can show you around whenever you're free?"
Stepping back, you brush out the wrinkles of your apron and straighten your back.
"I'm not going on a date with you," you counter simply. You turn your face to glare out the window, but he stares knowingly at your burning face.
"Whoa, hold on," he smiles in amusement, "Date? Who said anything about it being a date?" You flush at his words, eyes narrowing. He laughs at your lack of amusement, "It's not a date, okay? Just think of it as a.. friendly welcoming gift. And an apology for, y'know. The whole stealing your wallet thing. Besides, my friends want to come anyway."
You cross your arms defensively and ponder for a while.
"Fine, but I expect an ice cream cone as a welcoming gift as well," you try and ignore that absurd feeling of butterflies fluttering in the pit of your stomach. You want to roll your eyes as his features suddenly brighten at your agreement, but you don't. Unable to breathe within the awkward atmosphere, you turn to clear the remaining utensils and plates off the table, "So, uh. I'm free tomorrow, I think. I guess you need my number, right?"
"Oh, no need. I already saved it." You swivel around to see him quirking his brow at your phone.
Oh, he didn't.
You instantly slap your hands onto your back pockets, your heart nearly dropping at the lack of the device, "Y'know, you really should put a passcode on this thing. Also, nice background picture you got there."
This obnoxious little-
He laughs out loud as you swipe the phone angrily from his hold and snap the dry towel onto his chest in retaliation, "Stop pickpocketing me!"
"I can't! Not until I have your heart," he leaves with an amused wave of his hand and a soft laugh, "Besides, you make it too easy. See you tomorrow!"
"Who was that?" asks Mrs. Lee as she waddles out of the kitchen with a large tray of pastries. Her eyes are wide behind her wide-brimmed glasses, and she attempts to tip-toe over the countertop to catch a glimpse of the retreating figure outside.
You contemplate your next words for a moment and bite your cheek to keep a smile at bay, "My stupid soulmate."

I just realized I can actually talk here. Like this is my account fuck u
Fucking uhhhhhh, hi ig lemme ramble abt my God ocs yea?
Ignore this part if you don't wanna hear (likely) unedited rambles lol it doesn't matter
CW: neglect/abuse, assholery/narcissism, manipulation, tread lightly!
read the under cut owo
Also don't steal my art I'll fucking?? Fight you????
So
I have three main gods that I wanna talk abt especially bc they've been on my mind lately.. Less get it, side notes are in (parentheses) and are bolded cause I have perception issues whoo I don't want it to jumble together is my point lol
First up is my asshole,
Giodine
they/them (preferred)
god/godself (i like pronouns that fit my characters, so I'm giving a bunch away for one night only at--)
Tumblr media
ID : Giodine is colored with gold-ish yellow skin and ginger hair. Their eyes are a muted purple and they have tiny eyebrows. Their lips are a muted brown and are full looking, their nose is sharp and points down. They have wings for ears and is wearing a blazer with a long-sleeved, collared shirt underneath it. The background is beige with a yellow square and a dark purple square partially encompassing it. It is signed GH (for ghoulish husband), Spork, 21.
(lemme know if that helps at all! I'm sure I can do better so lemme know!)
If they look weird here it's bc I accidentally made their face too long but believe it or not this is in fact just a doodle Ik I'm so fuckin talented babes.
Anyways, they're basically the first God to ever exist on my version of earth (though even that is fickle rn, world-building is hard unless I hyper-focus on it, and haha Guess What I Haven't Been Thinking About) and they're very egotistical and selfish. As I'll probably yap about later is how they're manipulative as well, especially to another God I'll mention, and very neglectful to the other... other one.
Their partner(professionally), or fiend as they call him, is sam who for the first few eons was, unsurprisingly, absolutely terrible to him. A few tender moments are few and far in between in what could only be described as a completely rancid relationship. I'll describe giodine's side and in sam's lil ramble, I'll describe his :]
I have to explain this because it's a big part of the lore and how they can't work together, even when one of them is very much near The Void (technical death for gods) BUT basically, with Sam, giodine created purgatory. The issue here is that they basically seduced sam into doing it. Well, even if they hadn't, sam was in lesbians(happy pride month lmao) with giodine and would've done it anyway. But the ISSUE is that with the creation of purgatory came complications. See, my gods have to take time to develop into their power, and considering giodine was first and sam was around 666th.. you see the issue. Sam wasn't into his complete power yet and thus lost a giant part of it that went into purg.
See, giodine saw no problem with this (until much later, they do get a VERY SLOW BURN redemption arc cause this ain't even the worst of it), they got what they were aching for out of them and thusly had no need for..sam. They laid him in the spot where she was made (fwi it isn't inherently sexual, it can be, but literally, they just merged together-- taking bits and pieces of each other (which sam did not have enough of) and earth and light yadda, yadda I'll post the story I wrote for that later if I'm up to it) and left him there in the grass.
Again, they saw no problem with that, the deed was done, they didn't care anymore. A common issue in their qualms, sam and Giodine. They did find an issue in Sam finding an issue in the lack of aftercare, which resorted to any message going to or coming from sam going straight to his assistant and going back through them for a couple of thousand years. They found that infuriating-- how could he not face them over something so small! and for years?! it was ridiculous. After forcing a face-to-face meeting, a heated proclaim of hurt from sam, and a bitter agreement to meet up every now and again, they got what they wanted from him. Again. It was a business after all, there was no point in making it harder than it needed to be.
Giodine doesn't necessarily like boundaries and tends to overstep sam's frequently. They also don't like his reaction to his boundaries being long jumped over, which thusly ends up in disgruntled messages being sent back and forth between them and his assistant for a month or three. It slowly gets through to them, but they tend to say some stupid shit and if they want sam to stay, they have to try and avoid mentioning how "overly sensitive" he is to something that happened eons ago.
(quick mention, there isn't like. time. here. so in all honesty, giodine probably counted earth days instead of Heaven 'days' to get that) Soon into their arrangements to meet, they seem to get on at least tolerable terms, obviously, a few meetings where neither of them feels like going apeshit and taking proper shapeless (or in sams case, he's got a newfound form for ANGER OO just for giodine 🤗) forms isn't going to fix a grudge that has yet to be apologized for by the way. But it's a start to a very long process down the road. Tolerance.
Giodine as an entity is very fickle and rude and demanding. They tend to have a short temper that no one else is allowed to have or comment on-- They were the first therefore they were the most important!
This is very obviously an issue. But it's mostly directed to purgatory. Almost all of their seething rage is pointed towards the poor entity, she's barely been alive yet and they already seem to hate her for things she doesn't know how to do. Honestly, I don't think Purg will ever fully forgive them for the unnecessary abuse of her character, but just as Sam and Giodine get on better terms, they had barely just begun fixing the hole in their relationship. As of now, Sam/Giodine don't have any minor plot points with purgatory other than the major one so I don't have a lot to say about their relationship right now. Maybe one day.
I'd go into details, seriously, but I just wanna ramble about their relationships with each other and their impact on each other's existence. Hope you don't mind a few secrets 😉
But, now, it's time for a new God, one I think most people take a liking to...
Sam (Samuel)
He/him
Tumblr media
ID: Sam is surrounded by clouds in the light blue, fading to a darker blue sky and the yellow sun. His horns are a darker beige, which is being highlighted by the sun shining down on him, he also has pointed ears. His skin is red which is very prominent in the sun. His eyes are completely yellow, his hair, beard and mustache are also black. He has an orange scar crawling up to his Adams apple. His wings are a darker grey which is also being highlighted by the sun. His nails are painted black and his hand is holding up the black fabric barely covering his shoulders. Around the painting is a gold and red shaded frame with swirls complimenting each side and a crystal at the bottom of it. It is lightly signed GH, for ghoulish husband.
Sam, Sam, Samuel.
If you don't realize right away, Sam is basically Satan, he's the ruler of hell
Like how giodine was the first to appear on earth, as mentioned before sam was 666th for funnie reasons. Sam was made from bugs, dried blood, and sunlight which sounds pretty gross, but he's far from it. He's a silly, yet neat, guy. He wears Hawaiian shirts and khakis (not around giodine lmao) for cryin' out loud! how bad of a person can he be? Apparently to giodine (for a while obviously) he was the most retched entity to exist. This very much hurt him considering the amount of fake care they showed him before. With a mixture of confusing feelings (which wasn't supposed to be a thing but Univerce went "lmao you'll be fine" and left... short explanation, Univerce is the Universe and is the entity who simply builds these planets and gods that'll appear there and leave them to their own devices, xyr not extremely important in this story. Nor would they care.) and feeling used, he decided that no he wasn't going to take that.
If there is one thing Sam knows how to do is to self preserve himself, even if that means getting passive-aggressive notes sent to him every once in a while. While this period, Sam was surprisingly the least productive (unfortunately giodine knew this and eventually mentioned it in one of their meetings which made him hide away cause like hell giodine was going to be critical of /him/) but he managed. It wasn't terrible, but unfortunately, Sam being able to talk it out with someone who does practically the same work as he does and gets newer, more helpful ideas was better in the long run.
Unsurprisingly, Sam was the first to initiate the healing of his and giodine's relationship but it wasn't reciprocated. Who would've figured, aye? Giodine kept pushing it back onto him and ignoring any progress that could've been made before. Which was frustrating.
The painting above was 'painted' by giodine, which is sorta where their relationship gets somewhat on an understanding of each other. Giodine gets to take a deep long look into who Sam is and tries to express it but it never fit him, it makes them realize that they never really-- truly got to know him. And all it does for Sam is make him even more confused about his place in giodine’s mind. He figured it's another fluke to get him to do something, so he ends up distancing himself when they start actually reciprocating his friendship advancements.
Suddenly, like a flash, Sam was forced to stay with giodine which is where the majority. I'll explain.
Sam...isn't actually the ruler of hell. Anymore, anyways depending on the timeline. His and purgatory's relationship has always been complicated, she always avoided him, and when they talked she always seemed scared of him. So in the end, they've never been close. Distant. Sam always wanted to talk to her, he made her, but if she didn't want to talk to him he wouldn't force it. But imagine his surprise as Purg singlehandedly took over hell in a hazed frenzy.
And not only that, had a personal vendetta against him!
Well, that would be the only explanation to Sam considering how he ended up broken and barely 'alive' at the hands of her. Horns broken and in tatters, pain and almost obliterated it felt like a hate crime. He didn't know what to do when he made it to the office, Purgatory was creating chaos outside his door and barely being able to breathe he felt like it was the end. So he called giodine.
Purgatory
She/her
Tumblr media
ID: Purgatory is surrounded by flowers that are dark grey and white. The light fades down into a dark green. The light shines down on top of her straight, white hair that has yellow flowers tucked into it.  Her skin is a dark brown and has a orange-ish yellow scar on her shoulder trailing up to her neck. Her skin is also highlighted by the sun. In one of her eyes, her sclera is black with an orangey, glowing iris. As for the other eye it it has a white sclera and the same, glowing orange iris. She has wings for ears, one dark grey and one white along with beige horns. She has a white fabric covering her chest. The frame is gold with white accents, but also has vines and moss crawling up the side.
(may have goofed a bit and forgot to color the sclera of her other eye white but ignore that pls)
Purgatory was made by Sam and Giodine, but to her it felt like a mistake. Why make someone that you’re going to be terrible to, she believed. Giodine seemed to hate her and eventually made her section almost obsolete because she simply wasn’t able to keep up with the backlog that she wasn’t taught to deal with. Not only that, she didn’t have any help with any of it, it was almost like she was expected to just do it on her own. Until Death came along to help, but that’s not what we’re going to be talking about right now.
And also, Purgatory is Purgatory yadda, yadda, I wont insult your intelligence.
Giodine’s thought process (other than wanting to be Real Close to Sam and once that thought filtered out, promptly ignored it) was that all the extras that don’t fit in either category of their thought of good and evil they’d go to her. (doesn’t matter cause in Sam's system it filters through ‘levels of assholery’ and depending on how bad you are you either just vibe in the upper city under rule of capitalism and possibly many under paying jobs or being actually tortured for his amusement if you’re just evil. Morally grey. Anyway, it could work p well in heaven if giodine wasn’t such a damn stickler.) But in the end, every day, less and less people ended up in purgatory, leaving her with barely any people and more verbal abuse from giodine who ‘HAS to take them or they would be more dead than they already are’. You see the pain she has to go through, right?
~Idea section, this is probably not canon anyways so dont take it serious~
My thought is that another oc (BA, you may have heard of him idk) takes over simply because Purg took multiple hims from alternative timelines (which isn’t allowed but what’re they gonna do, undead a dead clown? multiple times from multiple timelines???)) because she adored him and they figured ‘well we gotta redo purgatory may as well do it like this’ and make him a demi-dead-god. i think thats a cool idea right? anyhoo
~Idea section over uwu~
Purgatory overall is a fairly timid character, she doesn’t like conflict, is easily overwhelmed, and generally keeps to herself. She doesn’t see the point in being in any drama if she’s just going to be yelled at and scolded even if it’s not about her. The only way i could describe her taking over hell is this:
She was tired. She was angry and after feeling like nothing was in control or in her hands, she snapped. Why doesn’t she get anything or get to be ‘all powerful’ but they do? She knew if she took on Giodine she’d likely get thrown to the void, but sam? He felt fair game. Considering her fear of both of these gods, she planned and got her courage up to take him over. She had considered negotiations but in the end, she ended up going into a haze and ruining everything in sight. She was more powerful than she thought and once she started, she didn't stop until Death restrained her and Sam was already in pieces at God’s doorstep.
The aftermath was fuzzy for her and for everyone really. Godine was planning a take back hell while actually worrying for sam, sam was planning for a retirement, and she was being consoled while trying to get in contact with sam to apologize. Giodine wouldn’t dare let her talk to him, until she just showed up in their office. She didn’t have a problem with Sam, honest, she just was going to take shit over, but it got out of control.
Spoiler, Sam took her apology and they actually became.. somewhat closer after reaching an understanding.
I wanna say that giodine took them being okay and sam retiring as good as sam did about purg running hell, but they didn’t. Giodine and purgatory actually barely got along in the first place, and only begun ‘working’ on their bitterness toward each other because they both had sam to encourage it. I can’t say for certain if they’ll get better, as theyre both undying and have time, but I’ll just say for now its uncertain.
Also, Death is Purgatory’s girlfriend after all of that lmao.
And.. yeah, i hope this makes sense and that you like my drawings and ramblings about my lil story in my head, i guess this is my way to develop it without just keeping it to myself cause god forbid i keep things to myself hshsh. If you made it to the end, thank you for taking the time to read and attempting to process everything, and even if you didnt read and just looked to look at my art thank you to!!
I may post some art over on @ghoulishhusbandart cause.. it was my art account before i completely forgot about it but i might reboot it! But if you wan art NEOWWW follow me on insta (ik cringe lmaoo) by the same name as this account @ghoulishhusband or just click that insta link! also ignore the fact that giodine is the only one without a portrait, maybe I’ll replace it the next time i draw but im graduating on monday and my dad’s coming TOMORROW?? so i won’t have too much time to do it... but i hope you like my art anyways :]
ok!! ty!! ily!!

Imagine Max having a fight with Neil because he doesn't want her to see Billy, and she goes to the Hopper family's new house asking if she can stay for the night because she doesn't want to go back home to her stepfather. And then imagnie Neil coming to knock at the door to take Max back, also scaring Billy. And maybe Hop and Joyce will put him in his place.
Hey hun, are you trying to kill both me AND Neil??????? And I say Neil bc Neil is gonna die at the hands of Hop & Joyce if he keeps doing this BULLSHIT. fuck neil.
(i swear you’re all trying to kill me and put Hop in jail but i love y’all for it so it’s fine ♥)
okay so it’s almost dinner time and Billy is walking past the front door to go to the kitchen and help Jonathan get some plates down when someone knocks on the door. He detours the couple of steps it takes to get to the door and swings it open, face unamused until a flash of red is rushing towards him, aimed straight for his chest and making solid contact. It catches Billy off guard, throwing his hands out and fully prepared to push the incoming attacker off when he realizes how small this person is and how warm and are they hugging me? And…
“Max?”
“Can I stay here?” She asks, voice distant and muffled in Billy’s chest. He doesn’t know what to say, just takes another step back so he can close the door and keep the cold out.
“What’s wrong with you, brat?” He asks, patting Max’s shoulder while also lightly pushing her away. He loves her, yeah, but they were never like… affectionate with each other. They never hug or anything, it’s usually light punches and playful shoves.
“Can I say?” She asks again, pulling away and catching eyes with Joyce, who’s standing in the doorway to see who just walked in.
“Hello there, sweetie! What’re you doing here? Would you like to stay for dinner?”
“Yes please.” Max says, rolling her board underneath her foot and over to the corner. Billy didn’t even notice it when she first walked in.
so she skated here.
She smoothes her hair down a little bit and walks over to find Will and El and tell them dinner is almost ready.
Billy doesn’t trust it.
Bc he knows his kid sister. Knows she’s never this frazzled. Knows she only avoids answering when the answer is gonna make Billy mad and that’s a problem bc… Billy’s calmer now. At least, he’s getting calmer. And the only things that would make Billy really mad are things that are serious and if something serious happened he needs to fucking know.
He forgoes helping Jonathan with the dishes to follow Max down the hall.
“Max!” El yells, wrapping Max in a hug and pulling her into her room in a flurry of giggles.
“Max is here?” Hop calls from the front door, where he’s shucking off his coat and hanging his hat.
“Yeah, I dunno why though.”
“Does there have to be a reason?” Hop asks on a chuckle, heading over to Joyce to give her a kiss.
Billy shrugs, looking down the hall unamused.
“Something’s wrong. She skated here in the dark.”
“Wait a second, she skated here?” Joyce asks, pulling away from Hop to give Billy a serious look.
“Her board’s in the corner.” Billy nods over to it. “And she left in the middle of dinner.”
Hop looks confused.
“Dinner is always at 6:30. On the dot.” He nods to the clock, which shows it’s barely 7. “Why’d she leave in the middle of dinner?”
Joyce gives Hop a serious look, prompting him to call the girls in. They come running in a flurry of little feet and humming.
“What’s up kid? Something wrong?” Hop asks seriously.
Max’s brow furrows.
“No. Nothing’s wrong.” Her energy falls. Billy sees it; crosses his arms.
“Sure about that?”
Max hits him with a glare, but it falters. She’s guilty- she’s never been able to keep her glare when she’s guilty.
She nods through a pout. Billy sits in his other hip.
“Really?” Billy asks again. “Because we made a promise when I moved out. You’re not breaking it, are you?”
He leans down a bit to look her more square in the eyes. He can see it- she’s nervous.
When Billy left he made her promise, absolutely promise, that if Neil did anything to her, she’d tell him and he’d get Neil put in jail. (“I’m living with the Chief of Police now.” He had said, swiping at a tear on Max’s red-with-anger cheek. She had swatted his hand away.)
“No it’s fine.” Max says, growling just a bit before pulling El with her to the dinner table to set out the plates.
Joyce looks nervous, Hop exhausted, Billy frustrated to high hell as he watches Max work to get the seat next to him.
And dinner is normal- pleasant even. It usually is with Max. Everyone in the house likes her. She’s funny and she has good manners and she’s good company.
But then-
There’s a knock at the door.
Billy pushes his chair back to get it, being the closest to the door.
“Wait!” Max calls, worry in her eyes that settles a pit in Billy’s stomach.
“What?”
“Uh… don’t. You shouldn’t-”
“It’s fine, sweetie, it’s just the door.” Joyce assures as Billy heads over, each step feeling like he’s walking to his grave for some undefinable reason. He reaches for the handle with some kind of strange worry in his heart, like he already knows who’s on the other side. He thinks he might. He thinks-
He swings the door open to find a man with a square jaw and a heavy brow.
“William.”
Billy’s heart lurches. It takes all of his strength to stand still, pissed as hell to see this man at the front door of his new home. He squares his shoulders, ready to tell the man to leave and shut the door on his face when-
Neil takes a heavy step forward, buttoning the intimidating gesture up with a crack of his right knuckles and Billy-
Billy’s scared. He takes a step back and feels his face flush red with embarrassment that he may never be able to stand up to this stupid man.
Heavier footsteps tell him Hop is coming up behind him.
“Hargrove.” Hop rumbles, putting a large, warm hand on Billy’s shoulder to pull him back behind him. Neil doesn’t let his eyes off Billy until he has to. Billy takes a few steps away, heart racing in anger and fear and embarrassment and anger goddamnit anger.
Joyce rubs his back and pushes him gently towards the dining room where Max is curled up in El’s embrace before she runs to Billy.
“I’m sorry Billy I’m sorry I tried to tell you not to go to the door I didn’t…” She hiccups, dry heaving. “I didn’t think he’d come here I- I…”
Billy pulls her in hard, crushing her in a hug to get rid of all of this feeling bubbling up inside of him.
“You brat.” He mumbles, hitting her shoulder slightly harder than friendly. “I told you to tell me.” He pulls her away by her shoulders and bends down to look at her. “Now what happened.”
Her face is switching back and forth from fear to anger to sadness and back again.
“He… he told me I couldn’t come here anymore. He said he didn’t want me seeing you because…. And… fuck him.” She buries her head in his chest again. El and Will come to her side, hugging her from behind to try to soak up the sadness and all the anxiety.
And over by the front door is an angry Neil standing in front of an even angrier Hop and Joyce, Jonathan standing in the doorway to the dining room to make sure the kids and Billy don’t come out or even see the man standing at the entrance to their house. He’s livid inside, seeing Billy’s father but hearing his own.
“You’re not welcome here.” Hop growls, arms crossed, looking big.
Neil chuckles something menacing.
“I’m just looking for my daughter. Do you know where she is?”
Joyce is boiling, ready to strike.
“She’s safe.” Hop assures.
“Thats not what I asked.”
Joyce is going to punch somebody. Hop takes a step forward, pushing Neil back out of the doorway.
“She’s safe. That’s all you should be asking.”
“I don’t want her here. Is she here.”
“Look.” Hop growls, stepping forward again, Joyce joining him at his side. “That little girl is like family to us, and if something happens to her or she feels unsafe for any reason, then I can guarantee I’ll be the first to know. I’m the Chief of Police, and being Chief of Police and living here my whole life, I have a lot of knowledge that I like to use. Like laws… regulations… good places to hide bodies.”
Jonathan chuckles quietly from his spot in the doorway.
Neil is shrinking, jaw set in something that’s probably supposed to be intimidating but looks more like a child.
“Do you understand me?”
Neil is red with anger.
“She’s my responsibility.” He grumbles and that’s what breaks Joyce.
“Then act responsible! And acting responsible means taking care of kids, not scaring them away or treating them like objects! That little girl is a good kid and so is that boy you tormented for years and you don’t deserve either of them! So until you don’t stop acting like a jackass and start acting like a good, responsible parent, that child is going to want nothing to do with you! And I swear, if you so much as lay a finger on her head or that boy’s head you’re going to wish Hop had got to you first after I’m done with you!”
Joyce is shaking with fury, glaring up into the square face of a man who looks more scared than he does irritated now. He sends a glare to Hop, who reaches down onto his belt to finger at the pocketknife he always keeps attached to his belt, and turns around to get in his car and head back home.
Hop shuts the door loudly as Neil drives off, him and Joyce out of breath from their anger.
They turn to see Jonathan with a proud look on his face.
“Fuck that guy.” He says, and earns a stern finger in his face for it.
“Language!” Joyce chastises him.
Jonathan chuckles and throws his hands into the air in defeat. “Sorry mom.”
And Max is allowed to stay, sticking by Billy’s side for most of the night as the family watches TV and eats dessert. And Joyce hugs Max real big and loudly, telling her she’s always so happy to have her here. She hugs Billy a little later, more subtly and quietly, telling him she’s glad to share a home with him. Billy’s heart falters as he hugs back.
