kind of ironic, all things considered. probably ended up doing his career a world of good... does feel increasingly impossible this century to attain that level of success without at least somewhat coming up through the spanish or italian system. still, it's not europe that forced him to come! blame the evil australians for their parochial ways, how they didn't give you the opportunity you deserved out of envy and malice... when really... okay, I'm not saying the real problem was english speakers all along, but it was not not them. it's not the italians booing casey!! it's the english!! and while he's doing quite a lot of glazing of the american crowd in his autobiography for being 'real' race fans... well, y'know, casey is rather conveniently forgetting that those fans were also being pretty nasty to a rider back then - just dani, not him. though incidentally, I do reckon that's why casey was SO disillusioned with valentino's crew chief jb... valentino-related animosity feels like more of a betrayal coming from a fellow australian, somehow - the same way that the booing felt worse coming from a country he thought would support him

anyway, in some ways the press treated him more like a european than they did an anglo lol, like a lot of the other anglo riders were actually getting a very warm treatment. probably this was largely because casey wasn't as outgoing and prepared to fire off pithy quotes as much as most anglo riders were. the european sports press can infamously also be pretty harsh on its own (I mean, the italians were all calling valentino washed after catalunya 2009 QUALIFYING lol) - and all things considered nicky hayden was probably often having a better time of it than, say, dani. come on, casey. we're in this together
