Music Monday #232: ATEEZ - Crazy Form  release: December 2023 genre: Kpop, pirate dance-pop, EDM cw: flashing bright lights, sharp camera cuts violence: revolution, guns, police, drinking

Of course today was always going to be my favorite pirates, from the moment they announced their comeback, so once again tossing my own rules in the bin. Because I can. And because I'm hopelessly in love with ATEEZ.

Note that the flashing starts early and aggressively, so if you have a visual trigger, the whole video is going to have to be a pass.

Honestly, I was not expecting THE WORLD it be over so soon - we only got the two episodes (well, three if you count Paradigm) before this, after all. So watch, we'll probably get like TREASURE series, where the final episode (also a full album) was followed by three more episodes. XD Considering the story they're telling is still barely half told, well....

Korean pirate dance pop may or may not be a valid genre, but it's one ATEEZ is intent on populating with their music, as the pirate vibes ebb and flow through the whole of THE WORLD EP.FIN: WILL. Once again, Crazy Form is placed in the third spot, part of the rising action of the album's musical and emotional arc. Heavy drum and bass pair with Latin syncopa and lyrics that, like the preceding track, Emergency, are filled with defiance against oppression and a willingness to fight for what's right.

The music video is, of course, packed to the rafters with lore, bright lights, attitude, and high degree difficult dancing. At about fifty-split between performing and storytelling shots, there's a lot to take in, maybe too much for even the dozen or so viewings I've done just since Friday. XD It's bright and crazy and sure it's the start of a war, but it's not all serious, as evidenced by the comic book panels in the middle.

Of course it's not an ATEEZ review if we're not talking about lore, am I right? Given the teaser at the end of the Bouncy MV, it's not a surprise to see this piece of the story follows shortly after that one. The pairings have switched up and the members are still more working as separate (though coordinated) cells, presumably still trying to fly under the radar ... until Jongho "blows" it. What exactly is the point of having a holographic projection of the airship? Are we ever going to find out how exactly the chromer got broken or what that means for the crew that broke it? Who knows! As per usual, every time we think we have answers, ATEEZ turns around and pulls a well actually on us.

what if looney toons peter lorre met slappy

Oh that's easy! I'd simply pass way

Jk jk but ohhhh!! Finally! I can use my book of notes for this! Because as of late I've been blowing off energy writing about slappy and where specifically other peter lorre parodies in cartoons came from + roles he played that contributed most to the typical lorre caricature we have in mind that so often shows up in media. Also because slappy only has small cameos and stuff and this is how I get more content lol *snorts some slapcrack*

Okay! But there is noticeable differences between the typical looney tunes lorre characters. There's 5 looney tunes shorts I've seen so far with some type of lorre character. Two with a mad scientist-esque character and one with a gangster, some with some dude Mr. Greenstreet (ha get it? Get it?) who's obsessed with new tastes (get this man some 🐔), and one where it's just himself along with other parodies of Hollywood stars. There's also his appearence in tinytoons where he was an evil train conductor named boxcars. There's more but that's all I've seen so far.

Though I think we'll stick with mad scientist lorre because he appeared twice in the original plus had a little comeback in the movie looney tunes back in action. Also they've got an official name! Dr. Lorre 👀

I know for SURE they would've wanted experimented on my boy slappy. A talking fish? How could they resist? Maybe they'll finally find his wishbone?

Of course they wouldn't be getting it easy. While I don't see slappy really fighting. He has his way of getting around (his mysterious transportation onto that stunt ride mobility scooter in Pat-a-thon or him just there watching pat through the window in lost in couch) he just shows up and disappears. Not to mention, in actual trouble. He can manage via unorthodox methods (stair wars) Ngl I wish I could settle all feuds like this lol

Also slappy seems to have a very small (but very much there) awareness that he's a weirdo/people find him creepy. He doesn't seem to mind. But can also easily do what he can to make people further repulsed by him. (I assumed so from his first episode and lost in couch but now I am certain in the halloween special)

Who would win? Will it be a battle to the death? Err no. The scientist ones has one detail that Slappy doesn't have. The thing about how a lot of peter lorre characters are depressed and tortured. Dealing with inner demons ans suffering from loneliness and thus are unable to control their actions. Which sounds dramatic but a staple trait to add to any of your Lorre inspired characters 👀 (like for an example, I just finished watching The Stranger On the Third Floor. Peter Lorre plays a criminal, in the final scene talking to a lady and said the only one who's ever been nice to him was a lady, and that he doesn't have any friends. He's clearly sad. But he's a killer who's been slashing people's throats. It should've been obvious. Still I think it was mcstinking cute!)

Anyways they don't get why people turn away from them while doing horrible things that make people run away in fear.

Which is something the looneytunes lorre characters have that slappy doesn't. Slappy is pretty happy go lucky. He's certainly weird but doesn't mind it at all. He enjoys things his own way and is friendly (to the best of his abilities) I mean look how Unbothered he is!!

I can see slappy befriending the looneytunes lorre characters. He's the only one I can see that wouldn't judge them for their heinous actions and would probably be the most understanding. Eh, knowing them, they'd still probably try to steal his wishbone but it wouldn't bother him much.

Now I can really see them having almost like a group session where they're talking about their feelings and slappy is just there listening xD slappy is the least likeliest to make a therapist but also probably the best..?

Why do I kinda feel like he'd find their heinous acts amusing? He loves a good failure after all. Probably listening to how they let people come to their untimely demise is to him like listening to how people failed to keep their lives? Perhaps for his own macarbe amusement? Or maybe it's just innocent curiousity? Or maybe he genuinely wants to help? Who knows.

Boss Week: Day 5

Who is your favorite ego and why?

… do you REALLY expect me to choose just one? xD

Since my heart can't decide, I'll just put down my favorite things for each one!

Antisepticeye is up there, obviously. He's the most fun to theorize about, and honestly, he's the villain I most love to hate (sorry, Darkiplier, I know you don't ask for Mark's BS, buuuut…). As much as I love to hate him, though, there's other reasons too– if I hadn't started theorizing about him, there's a chance I wouldn't have met so many lovely friends here on Tumblr, and honestly? He made me WAY more open to the horror genre, especially in games. I mean, I still probably couldn't handle playing FNaF or anything for myself because of my anxiety, but I get enough satisfaction, intrigue, and secondhand panic watching others play horror games. And it's FASCINATING. Not to mention, he provides endless scary/creepy/supernatural headcanon/fic writing opportunities, which I found out I LOVE doing! >:)

Dr. Schneeplestein is the character I have the most fun writing. I love nitpicking his speech patterns, his mentality, his motives– not to mention, all of the V's, Z's, and AH's I get to use in place of actual spelling, which is something I actually have a lot of fun doing! But above all of that… he was a good doctor (probably) and I miss him. I'm not sure how much I'd trust him if I ever saw him again, but… I miss my Henrik. :'(

Jameson Jackson is just an all-around delight! I absolutely adore how expressive and excited he is. And honestly, the idea that the community came up with that he's mute? I think that's actually brilliant, and the fact that the other egos are so inclusive of him in a lot of HC's I see makes me smile to no end. I wanna give that bean a hug! And… he also provides an interesting aspect to Anti's story that some of us didn't consider before seeing his video, which I think was worked in just fantastically. (If anyone wants to see the most recent theory I've done around the Silent Movie, it's here! :D)

Chase Brody is one of the more mysterious egos to me, despite how clean-cut his video was. I'm not quite buying 100% innocence from him, as much as I really, truly want to. He's an interesting character to write for sure– and the fact that everyone (even Robin in that Jackieboy Man animation) portrays him as a "victim" is what makes me want to believe he's not quite what he appears to be. I'm curious to see if he'll make any kind of referential appearance/mention or comeback in 2018!

Jackieboy Man is an interesting one, too. I can't say I know a whole lot about his character, other than that he, uh… tries, but I've written him as both very confident in his ability and as someone who's actually kind of insecure about himself. I'm excited to see what Jack has planned for him this year, since he said he "fully intends to explore the character" in the future!

Marvin the Magnificent is honestly one of my favorites to write too, even though he's literally only appeared one time and not once in that video did he ever call himself "Marvin" (he called himself "Jack the Magnificent"!). I frickin' love how salty and sarcastic he is, but I also like to imagine that he can be one of the most genuine, too. I'm not sure we'll ever see him again… but at least that means Anti can't get his hands on him! (Rogue said, nervously knocking on wood and hoping that all of this "time machine" nonsense Jack's been talking about won't put Marvin in any danger.)

Anyway, yeah. That's my input on my favorite ego– which, if you think about it, are technically all just one stitched together: ANTI Seán! :3

Gotta say, I love the imagery of Crushing!Mickey smirking because victory, bitch! Terrified and Logical Mickey ain’t got shit to put up against the power of Mickey’s emerging crush on his future husband! XD (Though Terrified Mickey makes a strong, and halfway succesful comeback after Frank walks in on them, and take the reins entirely for a while after 3x06. Which, you know, very understandable. But in the end, it’s always Crushing!Mickey - at that point, I’d argue, transformed into Loving!Mickey - that wins the day.)

I believe that the notion of Mickey being able to let go with Ian in a way he hasn’t been able to with anyone else is something you run with in Reward too, Riss? I heartily agree with the notion! In physical terms, like doing sexual stuff with Ian he’d never do with anyone else, at least not prior to Mexico - after that, I’m a bit more ambivalent. He might bottom for others then - it’s such a strong preference for him that I just have a harder time seeing him denying himself that forever if he doesn’t get back with Ian - but letting himself be manhandled or otherwise bossed around in the bedroom? Being vulnerable? That... yeah, I'm having a much harder time seeing him get to that place – which he reached so very quickly and instinctively with Ian – anytime soon with someone else. That said, I tend to think that it's a gradual process with Ian, too; it's there but only slightly and unspoken in the beginning, because while I personally think that Mickey does have a submissive streak and sometimes enjoys giving up control since it IS such an unusual treat and release for him (and because being able to trust that someone else will take care of you must be an utterly new experience) I think he also sometimes struggles with accepting this, the same way he struggles with being gay. He's a little bit wary of letting Ian see it, as he is wary of letting Ian know that this isn't just about sex to him, but he is also somewhat unable to help himself because he is so drawn in; right from the start, there’s a level of trust and compability that just seems to come naturally to them, and is strong enough to overcome all of Mickey’s logical and fearful objections.

But it’s also in emotional terms, just as you note. As soon as Ian notices that Mickey is maybe not only looking to bash his head in, he is immediately into that. There's no hesitancy, no disgust, he wants it. And afterwards, when Mickey allows a moment of vulnerable softness in handing back the gun, Ian is immediately into that too. For once, Mickey lets himself be something other than a hard as fuck thug and rather than scorned, is rewarded for it by Ian leaning in for a kiss. (Which Mickey can't accept, of course, but still.) And then when Mickey swaggers into the Kash and Grab, Ian is zero percent ambivalent about wanting to get right back on him. He likes Mickey and is pretty damned obvious about it (because Ian Gallagher doesn't know how to play it cool, like, at all).

Ungh. I'd go on because I am very into this topic (and I have a whole halfplanned meta on this relatest to their dynamic in season 10 and the curious discussion about who's the man in season 11 that I’ll totally finish writing some time), but I'm going out to dinner in a minute, so we'll leave it at this, un-edited and all. What do you think Mickey’s intention was when he visited Ian at work and asked about slim-jims? Imagining this is their possible second encounter, do you think Mickey had some idea they could have sex in the store? Do you think he went there to set up a meet up at a different time and place? Do you think he wanted to see his face and just to see what would happen? I don’t imagine he went to strike up a friendly conversation. I’m curious about your thoughts. 

OK! So I didn't even know this ask was here! All the yikes -- but I'm also delayed on asks right now due to a) the chronic pain thing and b) the whole getting ready for vacation thing. That has nothing to do with anything, but: For the record. Sorry I'm late.

I love this ask because it's one of those ones where my answer has no grounding in anything but my own feelings -- and my feelings are that Mickey probably warred with himself something fierce NOT to go into the Kash & Grab at all. So I don't think he got as far as logistics.

Logic Mickey is probably horrified by the whole thing and never wants to see Ian again. Like if the problem Ian wanted to solve was ONLY "stop Mickey Milkovich from terrorizing the Kash & Grab" then hooking up with him wasn't the worst way to go about it. He's created a vulnerability where there wasn't one. And I imagine that is really hard for Mickey to be chill about.

Which brings us to Emotional Mickey. Where we find two warring factions.

The first is the one that we meet again in 2x08. The "Oh God, Someone Knows" panic has to be extreme. I feel like the gears in Mickey's head have to be smoking, thinking about all the ways this could go wrong, and then what his contingency plans would be. He is probably continuously talking himself down from finding Ian and threatening him to ensure silence.

But then we have the second, and that faction wants to find Ian again very much, but for entirely different reasons because... I think that encounter was significant for Mickey. I don't think it's the first time he has sex with a man, but I do think he significantly let go of the control and that probably was a first. And he liked the experience a lot and he wants to repeat it. And he's already nursing a bit of a crush, so there are all those fluttery excited "holy fuck, that really happened" feelings going on. And with that comes all the how can I see him again? I want to see him again intensity.

So Logic Mickey and one part of Emotional Mickey -- Terrified Mickey -- can come to a level of agreement, which is "this can't happen again." But this is where the second part of Emotional Mickey -- Crushing Mickey -- has the upper hand. Because it's the only part of the whole equation that is going to stop fighting and just focus on tricking the other two. Like -- "Ok. We can all agree that what happened was dangerous. We can also all agree that it would be good to know where this Ian kid is at. So let's go down to the Kash & Grab and see if we can figure out the vibe. Then we know if we have to kill him."

So Logical Mickey and Terrified Mickey agree to the plan and they go to the Kash & Grab and very nervously ask about Slim Jims. Just to see what Ian does.

IAN responds by locking the door, coquettishly looking back over his shoulder, and telling Mickey they're in the back as he strips off his shirt. Because Ian is not experiencing much conflict on this topic. I don't think he's even considered the stuff the other Mickeys had in mind. And, vibe-check passed, Mickey smirks and follows because Crushing Mickey was in control the whole time.

So I guess I think "all of the above" but MOSTLY Mickey didn't care where or how they were going to hook up again. He just wanted to hook up again.
