Not really a fan of the dragon age comics but ngl continually surprised by the number of people who seem scandalised by Bela having been a slaver and citing this as a change from the game where she specifically set a shipment of slaves free. But like... c'mon. So you're saying she woke up one morning with her hold fitted with all the food and water and manacles needed to keep a bunch of slaves restrained and alive for the whole trip to Tevinter, and this was entirely sprung on her, and Castillon put her in charge of this job despite her having no previous experience doing this work. Please. The only way she could have been in a position where she had the power to release that shipment of slaves is if she had more than nothing to do with why they were there to start with.

Not saying the writers did the best most tactful job ever at portraying a black-coded character as a(n ex) slaver here. And I know the fact that marginalised people are far from immune from being complicit in systemic inequity or participating in violence against other marginalised people is one of those truths that can be facetiously over-dwelled upon and used to distract from the ultimate culpability of white supremacism in the ruling classes. But deeply wish we could all be mature enough to try to have a productive conversation about all that instead of trying to destroy both the complexity of this character and any type of parsimonious understanding of her backstory.
