ok. I'm about halfway through my first watch of the boot (MY ANGEL GODSENDS FOR THE FOLKS THAT SENT SOME ALONG THANK YOU) n I have some soda related thoughts. I know I've seen a couple posts unhappy with sodas portrayal in the musical n I can definitely. see that. I ain't done yet so I'll probably be circlin back round to this. but I think there's somethin real interestin with the fact that. often. it feels like soda is intentionally choosin the dumbest thing to say. not the actor. the character. leanin into what everyone expects from him. it always feels like there's a brief moment. a pause. a big sloppy grin. n then the intention to live exactly up to his expectations. he's the easy brother. the stupid one. the one no one has to worry about. God the scene where him n pony are layin in bed? there's a brief moment where pony incidentally runs across a deeper part of his brother. 'poor boy in love with a rich girl? poor sonofabitch' 'you know you sometimes say her name in your sleep?' n Soda gets this. deer in the headlights look. like he's said the wrong thing. let on somethin actually gets to him. n he's gotta redirect by reenforcin the 'naw I'm just stupid shtick' (544 fuckin pages!) n he does it so effectively even we as the audience fall for it. ough. anyways.
#i cant quite put my finger on it 100% of the time.#but theres somethin in the actin choices of both the actor N the character that makes you feel like theres just. more to soda.#i do wish we saw. more from him.#but i also get how the narrative changes dont fully allow for that#so far musical is makin me a little insane (good way)#jesus christ johnny is#perhaps#everythin to me#OH#ill probably make another post about this but somethin that made me giggle#is that pony refers to dally as the alpha of the greasers#whereas in the book he made it very clear everyone thought dallas was. like. weird.#which is just SUCH a silly change to me#(not bad!! i just giggled)#the outsiders#ponyboy curtis#sodapop curtis#darry curtis#dallas winston#steve randle#johnny cade#two bit mathews#the outsiders musical
