I think the big thing for me is texturing. There are some very cool bionicle MOCs I've seen that feel nothing like Bionicle because it smooths out the textures too much. G1 of course wasn't devoid of smooth bits by any stretch of the imagination, but there was (usually) an artful employment of it to imply shells or armor. And of course that aesthetic did evolve and shift across the line. Putting an 01 figure, an 05 figure, and and 09 figure side by side, while there is a definite shared overall design language, there's also a lot of very obvious differences as well. Also, 08's canister sets in particular always struck me as weirdly barebones and cheap-feeling compared to most of the others, probably why it's what I've ended up fixating on for improvement.
Ironically, by contrast, G2 had its own design language thanks to the use of CCBS, that is a lot smoother overall thanks to the shells, but still has a more involved technic presence than the Hero Factory predecessors. I feel it makes for a nice, artful balance on the whole, (though I still have mixed feelings on the Uniter torso piece, which felt simultaneously too much like the Star Wars CCBS sets and too random and careless with all the pistons) so my pet peeve with specifically G2 MOCs are ones that basically throw that out entirely to load them back up with excessive greebling and G1 pieces.
I digress. Point is, with G1 revamps, I don't mind like, proportion changes or filling in bigger gaps, (though I definitely agree plugging the technic holes for its own sake is too much) as long as the overall aesthetic spirit and form factor of the set is kept intact. If you change too little, then I kinda have to wonder what the point even was; it's not really a revamp at that point, just a set mod. But at the same time, changing too much or trying to smooth out the aesthetic, winds up feeling like something completely different, and again, at that point I have to wonder what the point even was.
(On that note, also not a fan of the recent trend of like, "revamps" that are basically unrecognizable, like a Pahrak-Kal one that was literally just a brown system mech with a bunch of railguns.)
i'm so fucking bored. can you guys tell me your bionicle hot takes.
