3 Little Truths I Had To Accept Before Becoming A Truly Healthy Person
I had been blessed with a relatively high metabolism in my younger years, so it was something a shock when the weight started to creep on in my mid-twenties. It started innocently enough. A couple of pounds gained over the holidays. A size up in pants each time I went shopping. But then I started to feel sluggish, unmotivated, and I struggled with long stretches of low mood that bordered on depression. I attributed it all to the normal stresses of life. Then one day I got on the scale one day in my early thirties and realized that a decade of working a desk job and living a mostly sedentary lifestyle had caught up with me. With a BMI of 24.9, I was right on the cusp of being officially “overweight.” And while BMI certainly doesn’t tell the whole story and therefore is not a great metric for calculating overall health, I have a petite frame and I knew that the weight gain was not reflecting an inexplicable gain in muscle mass.
What was frustrating to me about all this is that I wasn’t an inactive person, or so I thought. After all, I’d hit up my fair share of yoga classes over the years, and I even had two half marathons under my belt. But the truth was that I lacked consistency and went through long stretches of total inactivity. At the end of 2016, I realized that something needed to change. In the year and a half since, I am pleased to report that I’ve lost over twenty pounds. Exercise is not only a consistent part of my routine, it’s something I look forward to. My healthier lifestyle has not only helped me manage my weight, it has also boosted my overall energy and mood. I also believe it has helped me better handle the stresses of work and life. So what changed? It’s not because I finally had the right wearable tech, followed a certain diet, or because I chose a specific fitness plan. It’s because I had a shift in mindset first, and then the healthy change followed. If you’re struggling to form a healthier lifestyle, here’s why changing your mindset first is key:
1. Fitness programs and diets only work if you follow them
Perhaps this seems obvious, but it wasn’t always so for me. I used to spend so much time researching the best fitness plans and diets. But then I didn’t take action. I got hung up somewhere between planning and doing. Is the problem that you chose a Ketogenic diet instead of a Paleo diet? Or is the problem is that you’re still snacking on potato chips after work every day? (which I believe is in the “avoid” column for both diets anyway.) Is the problem that you decided on the Bodyboss Method instead of Kayla Itsines’ Bikini Body Guide? Or is the problem that you gave up after doing the first workout? The point is, just about any consistent fitness routine combined with a reasonably balanced diet is going to yield positive results. Diet and exercise are tools for a healthy lifestyle, but like any tool, you need to use them in order for them to work. So be focused less on the what, and more on the do.
2. Consistency starts with your mindset
I used to mope around for months, waiting for motivation to visit as though it were a neglectful fairweather friend. When I finally did muster up some motivation to exercise, it would fizzle out within days (or sometimes hours) of starting a new fitness regime. I’d end up hurting myself, feeling discouraged, or eating a copious amount of Haagen Daz. And when I decided that I’d ruined all my progress, I thought, “I might as well just quit.” It only took one setback to convince me that exercise was not worth the effort, and I’d resort back to my mostly sedentary lifestyle. I struggled with consistency because I struggled with motivation. And I struggled with motivation because I struggled with mindset. That’s because motivation isn’t something that just strikes you like lightning out of the blue. (Well, not usually for me anyway!) Sustainable motivation comes from taking action first. With the right mindset, when you act and finish what you set out to do, it motivates you to continue.
3. A healthy lifestyle is ongoing
A healthy lifestyle is just that: a lifestyle. There’s no finish line. What happens when you finally run that half marathon? Or finish that fitness program? Or lose 20 pounds? In order to make fitness a part of your lifestyle, it has to be about more than reaching a goal. And if you’ve been living a decidedly unhealthy lifestyle for a while, becoming healthy is a slow and gradual process. If you don’t have a solid mental foundation for sticking to your fitness regime, you risk becoming overwhelmed or discouraged. So many people give up because they’re looking at the top of the mountain instead of the next step. A healthy lifestyle is about forever focusing on that next step, no matter how far the mountain’s peak is. Because really, with the right mindset, there’s no peak at all. You draw success from what you’ve accomplished today. Become focused on the process instead of the results.
*****
The things that hold you back from getting in shape are a series of perceptions that you have about diet, exercise, and yourself. But just because you perceive something in a certain way doesn’t make it the truth. Yet, challenging your old mindset can be really tough, especially if you’ve been running the same inner monologue about health, fitness, and diet for years. I know this first hand! The first step is to find your why. Sure, you want to be healthy, who doesn’t? But if you don’t have clarity on exactly why it’s important to you, it’s going to be tough to set goals and adjust your mindset. Dig deeper than vanity. Because no, it’s not just about looking good in a swimsuit. So what is it about for you? Confidence? Energy? Self-empowerment? Balance? Then ask yourself: What does a healthy lifestyle look like to you? What’s the first step to achieving it? Then don’t wait. Go take that first step.

My Experience with BBG
A lot of you are familiar with BBG, or the Bikini Body Guide, the world wide workout phenomenon created by Personal Trainer Kayla Itsines and her partner Toby Pearce. Many girls have tried or finished the workout guides. I’m sure most who haven’t tried it are wondering if it is worth it. I’ve completed the guides twice and have started them and failed to complete probably a dozen times. I’m here to tell you my true thoughts of BBG are.
If you don’t know what BBG is, let me brief you. Kayla Itsines is a Australian trainer known all around the world. Her BBG guide began as a 12 week workout guide where you do 3 strength interval training workouts per week and 3-4 cardio workouts per week. She also started with an eating guide e-book. After gaining popularity, she came out with a second guide, and then grew into the app and has released a recipe book and a book on motivation since. If you didn’t know, now you know.
I was introduced to BBG from a friend. After 2 weeks of her talking about the workouts and how stoked she was about it, I gave in and tried them as well. The first BBG workout I did was probably the most vigourous workout I have ever done to this day (mind you, this was about 4 years ago and I’ve done 10 mile mud runs since then). In those 28 minutes I really thought I was going to die. Looking back, I don’t even know why I didn’t just stop. I think that’s the appeal of BBG - even from the start - the mindset of it only being a 28 minute workout pushes you to keep going. By the fourth week, I was doing full pushups. Yep, pushups, with my knees OFF of the floor. I had never been able to do those in my life! My first round lasted about 7 weeks and I fell off the wagon. I tried again a couple of months later but it didn’t last.
The next January, Kayla had come out with an app and I decided to give it another go since the app would make it easier. I was on vacation when I started it which helped even more. I had started a fitness Instagram account a couple of months before but starting BBG motivated me to find friends doing it as well, and this really began the true start of my Instagram account. When I got back home, I went to a BBG meetup in Phoenix and got to meet a lot of the girls I had been talking to on Instagram. They were so sweet! There were at least (probably more) 30 girls at this meetup. I though it was so cool to be able to meet so many like minded people that were doing the same workout as I was!
I started going to the meetups monthly and meeting more people. Some of them I would meet at the events then go on Instagram later to follow them and realized we already followed each other! This part of BBG is my favorite part, the community. Meeting up with the girls to workout and grab brunch afterwards really gave me a boost and I ended up completing the entire 12 week guide for the first time! I never weighed or measured myself, so I can’t give any statistical results, but have a look for yourself. Voila!
Obviously I got crazy results from this, and I had noticed a huge gain in strength and endurance. The only thing about it was I didn’t care for how it toned my body. I felt like while I did shrink, I was the same shape. That just made me feel like I was just burning fat but not really gaining muscle.Regardless, it did help me tremendously. Through those 12 weeks I was able to train and did a Tough Mudder!
The next year and a half was the on and off train again. Then this past January I decided I was going to begin doing the workouts again, only I was going to tweak it to work for me. This time, I did the interval workouts and that was it. For cardio, I was doing Zumba 2-3 times a week and cycling once per week. Plus I walk my dog twice a day which I counted as LISS (lower-intensity sustained state cardio). In addition to that, I was doing yoga every day in another challenge. My eating regime was plant based this time around.
This time I had gained much more than a weight loss, because I was doing other things, and I had gained self love as well. I was going to try to continue after the 12 weeks, but after a couple of weeks in I got burned out which helped me realize one of the problems I have with this program, the timelines. The whole time I would be in the action of a workout, I was thinking about getting to the finish rather than being present in the moment and thinking about the actual movements and muscles I should be using. While I was logging my workouts, I was thinking about what week I was on and how much closer that was to week 12 rather than thinking about how far I had already came. For me, the way this is designed only makes my type-A personality look at it as a task to get done rather than a lifestyle and hobby.
So there is my review on BBG. I would say the pit is that its made for girls already in shape to tone, and for those looking to lose weight you shrink down but can’t really change your shape using the workout plan. The peak for me is the community of amazing women you get to be a part of. We haven’t had a meetup in quite some time, but I keep in touch with a lot of the girls still and it’s great to have friendships with genuine people. In addition to the Arizona girls, I have become friends with people all over on Instagram. I’m not sure if many of us are even doing BBG anymore. Some are running their own training businesses, some have moved on to other workout programs, and others are just doing their own thing. I don’t know if I plan on doing BBG ever again, but I wouldn’t tell anyone not to try it. It is a great program and if you follow it, you will get results in some fashion and you if you plug yourself in you can make some great friends!

It's no secret that Kayla Itsines has the ability to transform women's bodies. The BBG (Bikini Body Guide) program exploded in the fitness world and catapulted Itsines into international stardom (and Instagram fame). The PDF guides have been out for years, so when the SWEAT app launched (it encompasses BBG in addition to other workout programs), many fans were wondering if it was worth the extra monthly fee. Related: BBG: The Supereffective Fitness Program You Need to Know So is it worth it? You decide! Though we're fans of the app and have our own opinions, we wanted to break down some things to consider if you're thinking of making the investment yourself. Let's get into it! The Price It's $20 a month, $55 for three months (a little over $18 per month that way), or $120 for a year (a 50 percent savings). While it may seem steep at first, Kayla once broke it down this way: it's like one Starbucks drink a week (or only twice a month if you get the year package). If you have fitness expenses already and no extra budget to tack on another $10-$20 each month, this is something to consider. However, if your out-of-pocket costs right now are relatively low (and you can sacrifice a latte a week to make this work), then the app might be well worth it, especially for all the benefits. Let's get into those. The Workouts There are four workout programs on the SWEAT app, including two from Kayla: BBG, BBG stronger, Body and Mind yoga with Sjana Elise, and SELF postpregnancy with Kelsey Wells. This means you can choose from bodyweight (no equipment) workouts, strength workouts with machines and heavy weights, yoga, or a specific postpartum program. Each program incorporates LISS cardio to complement the strengthening workouts. You can start over whenever or jump ahead to a certain week, but the programs are 12 weeks long, meaning you'll have a comprehensive fitness and nutrition plan that you can customize to your own schedule for three months. The Nutrition Speaking of that nutrition plan . . . from blueberry and lemon breakfast quinoa to a passionfruit and mango mousse afternoon snack, every meal is programmed out for you in the plan and complete with ingredients, instructions, grocery lists, and estimated prep times. Most recipes are marked as "easy" with a rare few venturing into "moderate" difficulty. Each recipe has photos, so you can get a feel for what your meal might look like. You can choose regular, pescetarian, vegetarian, or "other" (ovo-vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, and vegan are some other options). The program consists of five meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus a morning and afternoon snack. The Interface and Experience On the app itself, you can log your resistance training, cardio minutes, and recovery (hooray for foam rolling!) all while using guided videos and instructions. You can even log how many ounces of water you're drinking to keep on top of your hydration! Related: You've Heard All About BBG From Kayla Itsines, but Does It Actually Work? The app sets daily goals, which you can access on one page, in addition to giving you a calendar view to monitor your steps, workouts, cardio (which can be walking!), recovery, and nutrition from a weekly or monthly perspective. There's also a place to take and share progress photos, as well as an education section to learn more about resistance training, macronutrients, food intolerances, and more. Arguably one of the coolest features of SWEAT (if you have an Apple Watch) is that it links with your Apple Watch, allowing you to seamlessly track your steps, do a workout or foam roll session (it shows you what to do - with video! - right on your wrist), log LISS or HIIT, and track progress without your phone. Final Thoughts The SWEAT app has pretty much anything you could ask for in a fitness and nutrition app - and then some! Yes, there's a cost involved, so it's up to you to decide if the $5 per week is worth it, but hopefully this gives you some insight as to what those dollars will get you in terms of health benefits and convenience. Our suggestion? Try the seven-day free trial and see for yourself! from POPSUGAR Fitness https://ift.tt/2yP94BO via IFTTT

Well friends, we have reached—by school standards—the end of summer. Those of you who are still in school have begun to begrudgingly wake up to an alarm again, and those who are out of school are now sitting nervously in traffic behind those who slept past that alarm and are charging down the streets like a crazy person.
To all parties involved, I apologize.
As a token of my dearest sympathies, I offer you this new edition of favorites. Hopefully you will find things to love among the things that I love so that we can all focus on things we love rather than the things we hate—like the end of summer.
Let us begin!
If I Were You Podcast
For those of you familiar with CollegeHumor.com, this podcast is run by popular comedy duo Jake and Amir. Each episode they read questions sent in by fans via email and answer them by giving advice on what they would do if they were you. Questions range anywhere from relationships to starting college to crappy bosses to crazy roommates. This podcast always cracks me up, making me look like an absolute crazy person while I’m running, but I like to think of it as my core workout for the day. (Find it here)
Kayla Itsines’ Cookbook
As some of you may have seen, this month I started a bi-monthly cooking series where I hope to spend as much time learning how to cook as I do avoiding burning my house down or poisoning my family. You can check out the first post here, it’s all about workout guru Kayla Itsines’ new cookbook, The 28-Day Bikini Body Healthy Eating & Lifestyle Guide. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how easy and delicious the recipes are, and have already shuffled them into the my (very limited) memory bank of things I can make on the fly, which is saying something, because usually that space is filled with old ‘NSYNC lyrics and directions to a friend’s house that I haven’t visited since elementary school. (Find it here)
Honey Vanilla Bourbon Pecans
I don’t care who you are—unless you’re my sister or someone with a similarly dangerous allergy to pecans—you need to try these pecans. They are so good. So good. I bought them on a whim at the grocery store figuring they would be a healthy(ish) snack, but once I tried them, I didn’t really care if they were healthy or not. They were that good. Throw them in a bowl with some grapes and you’ve got yourself a hall of fame worthy snack. (I’ve only found these at Ralph’s but I would check every grocery store around you to try these guys, again, they’re that good.)
The Hard Cuts by Needtobreathe & Something to Tell You by HAIM
As you know, I have no idea how to give commentary on music besides, “it’s good!” so, as always, let’s turn this one over to the abundant adjectivers over on iTunes:
The Hard Cuts by Needtobreathe: “musical chicken soup for the soul” (Find it here)
Something to Tell You by HAIM: “all sweet melodies, catchy rock and pop hooks, and gonna-work-it-out feels.” (Find it here)
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck & Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy
As if the bright orange book jacket wasn’t enough to catch my attention, the title of Mark Manson’s book made it all but impossible not to buy. I mean, how do you not buy a book called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. Tell me how you walk by that book! Actually, don’t tell me, because if I did than I wouldn’t have read it, which would be a tragedy, because I LOVED this book. It was such a unique take on a self-help book, mostly because it demanded action rather than positive thoughts towards action. To explain the title, it teaches you to give a f*ck about the right things and to stop giving a f*ck about the wrong things. (Find it here)
Speaking of worth the read, if you’re a Dodger fan, Sandy Koufax fan, or just a baseball fan in general, I highly recommend Jane Leavy’s biography Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy. It is jam packed—and I mean JAM. PACKED.—with all things baseball, pop culture, and racial relations of 1950s-1960s baseball and has them intertwined in the telling of Sandy Koufax’s 1965 perfect game. I for one was absolutely sucked in by the story and found myself walking away with a much deeper knowledge of baseball, and a big fat crush on Sandy Koufax. (Find it here)
@JunkBanter
Honestly, this account made me so furious that I HAD to follow it. Why did it make me furious, you ask? BECAUSE I DIDN’T THINK OF THIS. It’s an account based solely around talking about snacks. Classic snacks, new snacks, limited edition snacks. It’s all snacks, all the time, and I just don’t think I’ll ever get over not starting this conversation. However, since the important thing is that this conversation exists in the first place, I highly recommend you go check them out. They are constantly filling me in with crucial snack-toids, such as the upcoming release of 7 new Halo Top ice cream flavors, which is a company I mentioned a few favorites ago, thus making any new releases a TOP PRIORITY. (Find it here)
Charity Miles
This app was recommended to me by my cousin, who is well versed in my mission to run 1000 miles this year. The way he saw it, I was going to be putting in the miles regardless, so why not do some extra good in the process? And I couldn’t agree more! This app is super straightforward and easy to use and has a ton of different charities you can run (or walk) for. All you have to do is choose a charity (which you can change anytime you want) and then get moving! The miles you put in will be converted into donations from sponsors of the app, making your hard work payoff again and again. (Find it here)
Have anything you’ve been loving over these last couple months? Let me know! My Amazon cart is always open…
See my previous favorites post here.
July/August Favorites Well friends, we have reached—by school standards—the end of summer. Those of you who are still in school have begun to begrudgingly wake up to an alarm again, and those who are out of school are now sitting nervously in traffic behind those who slept past that alarm and are charging down the streets like a crazy person.

Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide - Simple To Follow Tips To Getting A Better Body
A lot of people are insecure about the shape of their body, and because of that they aren't sure how to go about changing that. If you feel like you can benefit from information that could help you get into shape then this article can serves as a good resource for you towards your fitness goals.
When beginning a new fitness routine, it is important to ease yourself into it. This will give your body time to become accustomed to it, and will lessen the chance of injuring yourself. Also, you are more likely to stick to the routine if you start with something that is easily achievable. Once you get used to the exercise, you can increase the intensity and length of time. Click this website link for more information about bikini body guide : http://www.mirlasabino.com/
Professional guidance can make fitness training much more effective. If you have a friend with lots of experience with exercise and healthy eating, do not hesitate to get advice from them. When you reach the limits of what your acquaintances can teach you, consider engaging a personal trainer. A personal trainer's expertise, can deliver great results and be more than worth the expense.
A good tip to help you stay fit is to avoid raiding the refrigerator late at night. Snacking late at night is a surefire way to tack on body fat. This is because your body has no chance to burn the calories off. Avoid late night eating.
Exercise when watching television so you always have weight loss momentum. When the commercial comes on, stand up and do a few jumping jacks or a bit of stretching. Having small hand weights near the couch might entice you to use them as you sit there watching television. You can always have time to squeeze in some exercise.
Arm lifts are a good way to give your arms a quick workout and to gain upper body strength. Simply take a chair, bed, table, or any elevated surface that is the same height as your mid section when sitting down, and stand in front of it. Then take your arms and place them behind you on the surface. Crouch down a little until your arms bend into a 90 degree angle, and then rise up. Repeat 10 times for 3 sets.
You want your muscles to be strong and tone, but you also want them to be limber. Stretching your muscles is important, and will help your muscles to stay limber. If you happen to be under forty, hold stretches for thirty seconds. In the case you are over forty hold your stretches for sixty seconds since your muscles are less pliable.
Even if you sustain an injury to your right arm, don't avoid exercising your left arm. It is actually possible that by increasing the intensity of your left arm's workout, you may actually increase the strength in your injured arm by as much as ten percent over two weeks. By working out with your uninjured arm, you are stimulating the nerve muscles of your injured arm.
Rather than seeing exercise as something you "must" do, try to see it as something you want to do! Love dancing? Then hit the nightclubs! Enjoy a good hike? Then grab your running shoes! Cleaning the house, taking a walk with an old friend, romping around in the backyard with your dog - if it's something you enjoy doing, you're much more likely to stick with it.
Make sure that you get the most out of your shoulder workouts. There are three parts that make up your deltoids and ideally, you want to hit all three, if you want a well developed muscle. Shoulder presses and lateral raises, are two of the best exercises you can do.
Often, the best path to fitness is choosing exercises you enjoy. If you played sports in high school or as a kid, you can still play them today. Call friends with similar interests or join pick-up games. Also, if you enjoy swimming or running, choose to do those activities instead of punishing yourself with hated exercise-forms.
One great tip for fitness is going to help you strengthen calf muscles; you have to do donkey calf raises. These calf raises are an awesome way to effectively build up your calves when you're exercising. If a partner is sitting on your back, then all you have to do is raising your calves.
Increase your starting pace each time you run. To help increase your speed overall when you run, start out running faster than your regular pace. Over time, your body will recognize this as your normal pace, and you will be able to increase it again. Keep doing this until you hit your maximum running speeds.
Hopefully after reading this article you are feeling like you can form beneficial strategies of success towards your fitness goals. Remember that the more information you know the more you have to apply towards getting into shape. When you have a lot of information and apply all of it to the best of your ability, then you should see some serious changes in your body.

Ten entrepreneurs to watch in 2017
Over the past decade, SmartCompany has spoken with thousands of entrepreneurs about creating nimble businesses that deliver everything from dog food to high-end fashion. No matter the product, these company founders are focused on similar challenges: sustainable growth, meeting customer desires, and exploiting opportunities before competitors beat them to it.
In celebration of our 10th birthday, here are 10 Australian entrepreneurs to keep an eye on in the year ahead—and the companies they’ve nurtured.
Nick Molnar—Afterpay co-founder and managing director
Young Rich Lister Nick Molnar and Afterpay co-founder Anthony Eisen floated their payment instalments company on the Australian Securities Exchange in May 2016, and since then, the share price has rocketed 109%.
The platform lets shoppers take home items from stores that offer the service, and then pay Afterpay for their purchases in instalments, due each fortnight. The business recently showed a 142% increase in the number of retailers using the platform compared with last quarter, and a 100% quarter-on-quarter increase in retail users.
The platform’s growth has been fuelled largely through word-of-mouth, with the company encouraging shoppers to enthusiastically lobby their favourite brands to start using the payments system.
“Our customers are our biggest advocates and they’re really passionate about our brand,” Molnar told SmartCompany last year.
Lana Hopkins—Mon Purse co-founder and chief executive
The bag building game is now a global proposition for Lana Hopkins and her team.
The business is barely two years old, but Hopkins and co-founder Andrew Schub have created a multimillion-dollar company in Mon Purse that now has a foot in the door in the UK and US thanks to deals with Selfridges and Bloomingdales at the end of 2016.
While Hopkins tells SmartCompany she “couldn’t have written a better script if I tried”, the brand’s pitch to customers is highly calibrated to the rising interests in personalised goods. The founders know their brand, and are riding the wave of strong interest in the “design it yourself” bag and purse range.
“It’s affordable and you don’t need to mortgage a home to buy your bag. It’s about quality and it’s about technology,” Hopkins said last year.
Beau Bertoli and Greg Moshal—Prospa founders
Few business can boast a growth rate of more than 1000% within their first five years, but small business lending platform Prospa shows no signs of slowing down.
Beau Bertoli and Greg Moshal have carefully studied how SMEs use capital to formulate their business loan platform, which took out the top position in the 2016 Smart50 Awards with a three-year annual growth rate of 1074%.
The founders have business partnerships with Xero and Westpac, and have previously told SmartCompany their success comes from keeping goals clear and specific.
“Our greatest successes have come when we were very precise about expectations,” Bertoli said.
Alyce Tran—The Daily Edited co-founder
Anyone dreaming of transitioning from a day job into their own million-dollar operation should review Alyce Tran’s career path so far. The young lawyer has turn her blog The Daily Edited into a $5 million leather goods business that boasts an Instagram audience of more than 150,000 fans. With a partnership with David Jones well underway, the business is poised for another big year.
Along with co-founder Tania Liu, Tran has carved out a strong look and voice for the business, and is one to watch when it comes to engaging with users on social media.
“More people are on Instagram at night than watching TV. So put content up there and put some energy behind it,” she told SmartCompany in 2016.
Steve Shelley—Deputy co-founder
Steve Shelley and Ashik Ahmed spent eight years bootstrapping their staff management software business, but after securing $33 million in Series A funding from Boston firm OpenView last year, there are big growth plans on the horizon for Deputy.
The $10 million company delivers employee roster, timesheet and workflow programs to SMEs, as well as bigger clients like NASA, and has a 25,000-strong customer base.
In 2016, StartupSmart reported the business has its eye on expansion across the Asia Pacific and its latest round of funding will likely come in handy when the founders are pitching to clients from their new Singapore office.
Kayla Itsines—The Bikini Body Training Company co-founder
Kayla Istines and Bikini Body Training Company co-founder Tobi Pearce were the youngest entrants on the 2016 BRW Young Rich List, with a combined estimated worth of $46 million.
The fitness entrepreneur’s “Bikini Body Guide” programs have reached millions around the globe and continue to do so, although the company has always kept quiet on exact audiences and profits generated by the fitness empire.
What we do know is the reach of the brand’s social media profiles: Itsines has more than 10 million Facebook fans, 6.3 million Instagram followers and 390,000 Twitter followers. These platforms prompt tens of thousands of engagements with every post, while fuelling sales of the brand’s programs and merchandise.
Richenda Vermeulen—ntergity founder
The founder of impact-driven digital agency ntegtrity says she’s been able to grow her business by keeping honest and sharing stories. She believes strong team connections are the key to long term success—a lesson she recently blogged about on the company’s website after taking her whole team, and their partners, on an intensive strategy boot camp where they all shared a villa for a week on Thailand’s Koh Samui.
In a climate where startup founders and entrepreneurs say building sustainable businesses that have a direct social impact is the most important thing, ntegrity is an example of one operation that continues to grow while keeping a focus on impact-driven projects
Vermeulen told StartupSmart this month that as ntegrity expands, her own willingness to rely on others for expertise and support has been key, with the belief that the ability to work through roadblocks is a matter of personal introspection.
“The person who I was five years ago is not the person I am now and that’s a good thing,” she says.
“One of the best things about being an entrepreneur is you’re not stale.”
Zoe Pointon–OpenAgent co-founder and chief executive
The chief executive of the real estate agent comparison platform has previously said you should work for a startup before launching your own.
Her own entrepreneurship journey began at a very young age, which has no doubt come in handy when making big decisions after she and co-founder Marta Higuera closed a $12 million funding round in August 2016.
OpenAgent is getting started on a national expansion plan, with Pointon telling StartupSmart last year the team is confident in their focused approach and the ability to disrupt this one specific area of the real estate market.
“Real estate is an area where people that are thinking about buying or selling have a lot of pain in the process and there’s nowhere near enough transparency,” she says.
Luke Anear–SafetyCulture founder and chief executive
SafetyCulture closed one of the biggest high growth venture investment rounds in 2016, and this year we’re watching what the cloud-based workplace safety company will do with the $30 million it scored from venture capitalists.
The business was created from Luke Anear’s Townsville garage in 2004 and it found a niche by providing easy-to-use auditing app technology for workplace safety. Ten years later it had gained investment from the likes of Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquhar.
Anear is no stranger to funding rounds, and has previously told StartupSmart there’s value in getting to know your investors very well prior to inking a deal.
“It’s like a marriage that you can’t get out of. Look to a range of different investors and consider other options to increase revenue before considering investment,” he says.
Having just opened offices last year in San Francisco, Kansas City and Manchester, the next 12 months will give SafetyCulture the chance to take on the world.
