thinking about republican portraits again also as always. there’s something about them that just gets me the way theyre so lifelike and detailed and the way you can look into the eyes of people who lived so long ago.. there’s one I really love in the boston museum of fine art which is terra cotta and made from a life mold of a guys face and you can see all the little lines and a scar he had on his head but then there’s these places where it’s been more roughly and artistically modeled like in the eyes and hair, where you can see the strokes of the artist’s fingers to form the hair and the stylus to draw the eyes. it’s the record of two people as much as one and this object was touched and molded physically by both of them
