Legacy (what is a legacy?) Part 12

It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see I wrote some notes at the beginning of a song someone will sing for me

Summary: Mike is 13. Born May 2009. Sid didn’t know he had a son. All Mike had was hope and a prayer for his and his half-sister’s safety.

(Sid is a dad of a teen he didn’t know about AU) Sidgeno.

Warnings: (for the total story) post-child abuse (all off-screen but it affects things and is spoken about often), learning how to parent, panic attacks, anxiety, based on last season, OCs?, realization about sexuality. Post breakups. Desperate lack of in-depth research for CPS in both PA/CA, melodrama?, kidfic, angst, slowburn, playing fast and loose with the law for drama/storytelling purposes.

Kris was swearing as he leaned on the boards near the benches of the practice rink. Not even under his breath. That was a thing. The swearing. That was. Definitely happing.

It was something Zhenya should have been preventing because Marisol was on the bench, watching her brother intently, but Zhenya couldn't stop Tanger. Mostly because Zhenya happened to agree with the swears. The curses might be all in French, but Zhenya had been in the league long enough to know Quebecois profanity when he heard them, and Kris was swearing. It was not as if Zhenya could blame him. If it weren't for the stick Zhenya was leading on, he may have fallen over at the revelation before him.

Mike could fucking skate.

There was no fucking way this kid wasn't on a prep team. He was too good. His edge work was something that Zhenya had seen with defencemen two or three years older than Mike was.

Sid had asked if Tanger and Zhenya could stay to skate with Mike and him after practice. It was well after the press left to write their end-of-camp articles, so the rink was nearly empty. It was the first time since Mike and Marisol arrived that there was a free moment just to skate.

The skates Mike had brought with him still fit, Sid had told them, and the equipment guys had found a few pieces of gear that could be adapted for Mike's size. The skates were not the top of the line, but they were well cared for.

One thing was for sure, though, Zhenya thought as he watched Mike and Sid chase after a puck; Mike did not skate like a mini-Sidney Crosby.

The boy was a defenseman through and through, but his edges and speed were very impressive for barely being a teenager. Mike had an excellent sense of his place on the ice and was trying to steal the puck from Sid with a vigor that said he had nearly forgotten that he hadn't skated in over six months.

A few rusty spots in Mike's game made the gap in time he spent off the ice clear, but there was also something natural in his movement. Zhenya would put money on Mike being just like him rather than just like Sid. Talented but determined enough to ensure dedication and hard work would develop skills.

Mike stole the puck from Sid and took off toward the other goal. Sid outpaced him and got the puck back.

"Of course, he won't go easy on the kid," Kris muttered as he watched the puck battle.

"Our Sid?" Zhenya said, arching an eyebrow the best he could in his helmet. Sid was one of the most completive men Zhenya had ever met, which was saying something considering their world.

They settled down to watch the game of keep-away going on.

"He's good," Kris said, leaning on his stick. "Like. He's as good as some of the kids in juniors right now. How wasn't he scouted?"

Zhenya shrugged. Tanger knew the answer. Mike's family wasn't too well off. He might not have had the chance to develop the same way some of his age group would have. Hockey was expensive. That was a universal truth they all knew too well.

"Has Sid figured out who his coach was?" Tanger asked.

Zhenya nodded. "Brisson's office reaching out. Get more details sometime soon."

Mike stole the puck and streaked up ice in a breakaway, Sid a second behind him. The brutal practice that marked the end of the camp was catching up to Sid. Mike flung the puck to the empty net, making the shot just below the top bar.

Mike's celly transformed his whole attitude. He pumped his arm twice as he skated around the goal. Some of the embedded sadness that Mike carried from in his frame was gone. He looked like the thirteen-year-old he was rather than a world-weary man.

Marisol cheered and jumped up and down on the bench, nearly knocking over Mike's always-present shaker bottle. Zhenya reached over and ensured she didn't fall over as she overbalanced slightly.

Zhenya was glad to see the boy in him rather than just the man he could become. Mike deserved to have some of his childhood protected.

Sid had slowed down to watch as Mike called, a faint smile on his face. He looked proud, so proud. Mike grinned up at Sid. To be honest, there wasn't much of a height difference. Based on the few photos Zhenya had seen, Mike's mother was just a little shorter than Sid.

Tanger sighed. "He's just as obsessed as Sid is, isn't he?"

"Isn't yours?" Zhenya snorted. "I've seen Alex's workouts. He try to copy you."

Alex wasn't doing Tanger's workouts – mainly because Tanger put his foot down, explaining that Alex's frame wasn't big enough for it to be safe. Still, the kid insisted they work out together sometimes, so Tanger had gotten a trainer to put together a workout that would be best for Alex.

"And I've seen Nikita on the ice." Tanger shot back with a smirk, "He's got the one-legged goal celly down pat."

Zhenya shrugged, his voice deliberately light. "He's into football more right now." Nikita was on both a hockey team and a football team, although the school where he was on the team insisted on calling it "soccer." Nikita's interest was definitely in football more than hockey at the moment.

Maybe that would be a good thing in the long run, Zhenya thought. It's hard to live up to a parent's legacy. He had seen many teammates and other players struggle under that burden. Kappy was one of them. If Nikita chose not to deal with Zhenya's legacy, how could he blame him? And Nikita was happy playing "soccer." It was cute. If that was his future then that's what Zhenay would support him in. No matter how much he would have to learn.

Once Mike had recovered the puck and sent it past where he and Zhenya had been standing, Tanger took off like a shot, easily controlling the puck. Mike was fast, but Tanger, as a far more experienced defenseman, was faster.

Zhenya raced into the play. Mike was grinning hard. So was Sid.

They played back and forth for a while, all the adults keeping an eye on the time. The opening game was soon; they couldn't be too exhausted. But Mike was having such a grand time, and Geno was incredibly reluctant to bring the session to an end.

Eventually, one of the trainers stepped out of the office and next to Marisol on the bench, signaling that it was time for them to get off the ice.

Mike's smile didn't dim as they got off the ice, with Marisol trailing behind. Mike carried the bucket of pucks; Tanger had called him a rookie and said it was his turn. Mike had laughed.

Geno hoped it was because he knew he would be skating again soon. Once they figured out his former team, Sid could get him into a team. Nikita's hockey practice doesn't start for another three weeks. Maybe they would be able to skate out of the same rink.

Well maybe. Nikita wasn't as excited to skate as he was to go to soccer practice, which started at the end of February. Anna assured him that Nikita really did like hockey. He just liked soccer more for now.

As they got changed and ready for the showers, Tanger showed Mike where to dump his gear so it could be cleaned; Zhenya turned to Sid. "He is your kid."

"There is no way he isn't," Sid said, satisfied with the workout and seeing Mike on the ice. Mike and Tanger had changed out of their gear quickly. Tanger had a photo shoot and interview he had to be ready for, and Mike had made faces about staying in the sweat-soaked pads and under armor. Apparently, he and Sid did not share the same superstitions.

"Have you figured out if he wants to skate with a team?" Zhenya asked, and he watched Tanger show Mike into the changing room and where the showers were.

"He really wants to," Sid said. "I'm just waiting for Pat to tell me the info for his old coach."

"Is he having trouble finding the guy?" Zhenya asked, turning to face Sid in surprise. It was unusual for Brisson to have that type of trouble. Most coaches who worked in U16 teams would fall over themselves if an agency like Brisson's called.

"The guy apparently retired and moved just after Mike stopped skating," Sid said in English, shrugging. Zhenya read between the lines; the coach didn't see the bruises that weren't from hockey. "Mike's team was just slightly more than a rec team. To be honest, we have to figure some stuff out. Even if we don't talk to the coach, Mike is good enough to be in most of the U13 and U16 teams around here would take him."

"Pat will find him," Geno said before being interrupted by a stifled wet gasp, directing their attention to the corner of the locker room. The sound was of a panicked child, and Zhneya hated that noise.

Marisol had been there in the corner of the locker room, messing with the bucket of pucks they had just taken off the ice. She had been occupied by taking the pucks out of the bucket, stacking them, and creating a pyramid with the pucks. Zhenya thought she wasn't paying attention to anyone in the room.

She had been excited when Mike stepped on the ice, a delight that made Sid smile so wide it would split his face. Zhenya was positive that Sid would buy her a pair of skates when he could, just by the way he smiled.

Marisol wasn't smiling anymore. She was now looking around the room, back and forth, searching for something, or Zhenya realized as she hyperventilated, someone. The panic that crossed her face wasn't faked, and Geno was up and moving toward her the moment he processed the expression. Sid wasn't far behind.

In Zhenay's experience, this wasn't a moment to let a kid calm themselves; instead, she needed help. Marisol was trying to say something, but it was such a garbled mix of Spanish and English that Zhenya had no hope of translating.

She looked around, panicked.

Zhenya couldn't figure out why she was so frantic. Maybe it was a tantrum? Was that different in girls? Nikita didn't have meltdowns like this. But Zhenya didn't know if there was a different temperament for girls.

Sid looked as panicked as Zhenya had ever seen him. However, he didn't hesitate when Marisol looked at him, eyes wide in panic and red with tears.

"Marisol. Marisol." Sid said consolingly, his voice tight with emotion and worry. Marisol struggled to breathe correctly, still looking around. "Can you tell me what's going on?" he asked, kneeling down. He reached out to her, and Marisol went with a bit of hesitation. She ended up sitting on his lap while Sid sat on the floor.

Zhenya didn't know if Marisol would be able to respond. She was breathing hard, and most of what she said was Spanish –as Geno could tell.

Thankfully, the proof that Sid would be a good father was already present; he waited her out and didn't rush her or panic outwardly. Zhenya saw in his eyes that Sid was afraid, but none of that showed on his face.

She stuttered out, in between gasps of breath, "¿Dónde está Mike? Quiero Mike. Dónde está. Prometió no dejarme!!" Tears started to fall down her face, and Sid took one of the corners of his jersey because they hadn't even started pulling off their layers of pads and gear yet, and wiped her cheeks. Marisol leaned into the touch. "Mike?" She said louder.

Mike's name was the only thing Zhenya understood from her words. At Sid's panicked glance at him, Geno was up and moving towards the showers.

Mike beat him, racing out of the shower area and appearing at the doorway, half-undressed. His face, pale and upset, entirely changed from the happy look before. Tanger was half a pace behind him. Mike scooped Marisol into his arms and cradled her close to his chest.

Mike stayed close to Sid, and Zhenya watched as Sid put a tentative hand on Marisol's back. Marisol hiccupped and sobbed, but the sheer panic in her movements and voice faded. She didn't flinch away from Sid's touch.

Mike was muttering softly in Spanish as Marisol calmed down and eventually fell into an exhausted sleep. They stayed like that for a long while.

Zhenya usually hated missing the post-practice shower, but now he didn't want to leave the three of them alone. Tanger dipped off to take a quick shower. When Tanger returns, he and Tanger eventually change into their street clothes.

Tanger pulled Zhenya aside when he was done getting changed, keeping an eye on the little family sitting on the floor of the practice rink's locker room. "G, I got an interview. Are you busy this afternoon? I don't want them to be alone completely." His worried eyes met with Zhenya's. He didn't want to leave Sid and the kids, but they both knew they didn't have a choice.

Zhenya nodded, going over his schedule in his head. Just Nikita. Anna is out. There were no interviews or meetings today. "I'm free all afternoon. Just pick up Nikita from school. I'm be with them after all day, if they want."

Tanger nodded again, saying that would work, and gave Zhenya a bro hug before leaving. Sid and the kids hadn't even noticed either of them moving.

"You change, Sid," Zhenya muttered quietly when it was clear that Marisol had gone down for the count. "She'll sleep for a while."

Sid glanced down at the siblings, concern written all over his face. He gave Marisol one last gentle head pat before standing, and she snuggled further into Mike's chest.

Sid got changed rather quickly and didn't even seem to take his eyes off the kids. When he was done, he handed Mike some clean clothes.

Mike stared blankly at the pants for so long that Zhenya thought he wouldn't take them before transferring Marisol to Sid's grasp. Sid took half a step back to give him space, Mike's face tightened, but he didn't stop Sid. He just changed faster.

When Mike had stripped out of the sweat-covered gear and was dressed in clean clothing, he held out his arms to take Marisol back. Zhenya was only a little surprised to see Sid hand Marisol back to Mike.

Apparently, they can't be separated, and Sid wouldn't try.

I just thought of a time travel au/kidfic (this evolved a lot as I was typing it out)! Hannibal works out time travel and goes back to save Mischa but his method is unstable. He first turns up in Mississippi and meets a young Will (quite young but older than Mischa was maybe 7 or 8?). When Hannibal finally jumps back far enough to find Mischa, Will comes with him (by accident or not 👀). Will helps Hannibal rescue Mischa in a way that keeps the timeline intact. They return to Hannibal's present day... Hannibal then also meets a Will who is an adult but adult Will won't tell Hannibal anything about his past (so child and adult Will are in the same timeline and meet even). Anyway..... Thoughts?

FINALLY an opportunity to ramble about an idea i've had

so this, except Hannibal screws it up so bad that both he and Will get launched into the past. something something Hannibal's goal being based on helping someone he truly loved, which thrusts him into Will's path, but also thrusts Will into his.

Hannibal sees a little boy in the road crying so hard it looks like he might throw up, curled up beside some roadkill and in agony because the poor creature didn't deserve to get killed and it didn't understand and it wasn't its fault and and and and- suddenly there's a man there, someone for the boy to sob to about the animal, and someone who is listening intently, trying to reassure him without treating his pain as trivial.

and then there's Will.

Will is near a very old fashioned building, in a wide yard that stretches out a long way and even has a river running through it. there are kids everywhere, varying in ages and in health. he's looking around, and he sees so, so much pain. so much loss. it's overwhelming, taking in all the different emotions of people too young to conceal them, and then-

a small tug on his jacket and he turns around, startled, and is met by a 13-year-old blond boy with eyes that are piercing through his very soul, as if seeing what had been going through his head. the boy is dead silent, staring at Will like he's just seen the face of God, and hands him a flower he'd picked before approaching.

a comment gets passed from one of the other kids. Will is still reeling from everything and can't even process what's going on, much less what was said because it was a version of French that he's never heard spoken.

the boy that so kindly handed him a flower snaps.

so now, while Hannibal is off in the past consoling a young Will who's mourning a raccoon that didn't know any better, Will is flung into the past and having to try to stop a young Hannibal from beating and drowning some teenager for saying something nasty about Will.

I really love this story and where it's going so far!! Every time I see there's a new update I get so excited, it's such a good concept!! And I love how Holly's character keeps growing and how we learn more about her as time goes on! I also genuinely didn't expect to be so invested in Holly and Daniel's relationship but they're so cute! And I'm really excited for when Holly realizes whats actually going on between Mike and Will, though I expect that'll take some more time.

This got long again, but I'm just obsessed with this fic, you're doing a great job!!!

I've written down the Daniel x Holly meetcute a while ago and am just waiting for a way to integrate it naturally so i'm happy you like them 👀 Holly really wasn't supposed to have a boyfriend yet, as in my original vision for this universe Byler was older (and already had a kid before coming back to Hawkins 👀) and Holly was in college, but I really liked Kidfic!Holly's view on that relationship and I wanted to explore it more in this version now she's still a teenager. IDK I wanted her to have the perfect High School sweethearts trope (aka what Nancy thought she wanted in s1) but have it not be the typical cliché either. they're just good kids that go well together <3

And LQR tries to dissuade them but they keep doing it… and they keep doing it… and it doesn’t stop… and now they’re like 12 and 15 and STILL doing it and maybe it’s even evolved into real romance. And maybe when they’re both teenagers they take it even further 👀

Same thing as above but Make It Toxic. Maybe they’re grieving their mom and they start using each other as an anchor. LXC takes comfort in babying his baby brother and cuddling him and fretting over him and protecting him from everything bad. And LWJ lets LXC do this because it makes him feel so safe and secure…. And now they have a thing where LWJ is always demanding LXC’s attention and LXC is always giving it and if LWJ doesn’t give HIM attention he starts getting super fussy over him. And… what if this… also goes on way too long and gets even more intense… and it 👀👀👀👀 turns into real incest.

Jadecest as adults:

I would love to see adult jadecest where they became such because of the above circumstances and they still have these tendencies in the present

I love the idea of them having kids and figuring out that the kids are ALSO incestuous, the more abrupt the discovery the better!! Maybe the kids are small and they are mimicking the exact same tendencies as above, maybe they’re teens and the jades walk in on them in the act!!

I have no idea where this came from. It's kidfic; a plot-free, post-Existence AU

The sound of retching wakes her up. Mulder is still asleep but Scully gets up to see which one of their teenage children is sick. She tiptoes down the hallway and sees a crack of light under the kids’ bathroom door. She knocks lightly. When there’s no answer, she tries the doorknob. It’s unlocked so she gently opens the door. She sees Katie on her knees, head bowed in front of the toilet.

“Sweetie, what’s wrong?” she asks.

“Ughh…”

It pains her to see her teenage daughter—her beautiful, brilliant, bold daughter—suffering. Katie’s in her pajamas and her chestnut brown hair is tied in a messy bun on top of her head. If Scully didn’t see her daughter go to bed herself she might have feared that she'd been out somewhere and had too much to drink. It hadn’t happened with William yet and even though he was two years older—sixteen to Katie’s fourteen—Scully is fairly sure that Katie is more likely to experiment with drinking. Ever since she was little, Katie had tested her parents’ boundaries. She isn’t a bad kid by any stretch of the imagination, but she has her father’s rebellious streak and healthy disrespect for authority.

“I have really bad cramps and then I got nauseous,” Katie says, still leaning over the toilet.

“Oh, sweetheart.” Scully kneels next to her daughter, rubbing her back like she did when the kids were babies. Since starting her period last year, Katie had been suffering from painful cramps and heavy bleeding, but Scully had never seen her this sick before.

“Uhhh,” Katie moans and turns around, leaning on her mother now.

Scully sees the seat of Katie’s pajama pants is stained with bright red blood.

“Let me get you a change of clothes,” Scully says.

“Fuck,” Katie exhales. “I just changed my tampon, too.”

“It’s okay, I’ll be right back and then you can get cleaned up,” says Scully. She’d normally give her daughter at least a raised eyebrow for her language, but she knows this pain personally and agrees it’s warranted in this situation.

She heads to Katie’s room and pulls out a fresh t-shirt and pair of shorts. On the way back, a thought comes to her. She wants to shake it off but as a medical doctor she can’t ignore it. It’s not a topic she’s ready to broach with her daughter, but then again, she can’t run the risk of not asking.

“Sweetie,” Scully says hesitantly as she hands Katie the clean clothes. “I need to know if there’s any chance you might be having a miscarriage. You mentioned you just changed your tampon and this seems like a lot of blood.”

“Mom!” Katie shouts.

“I won’t judge you at all,” Scully says. “But you need to tell me because, if that’s the case, you might need more medical attention.”

“No, mom, I’m not having sex.”

“Good,” Scully says with an audible sigh of relief. “That’s a conversation we’ll have at another time.”

Katie laughs, the first time Scully sees her smiling all night. In theory, she and Mulder want to be sex-positive with their children and never make them feel ashamed of their bodies, but it’s harder in practice when she still sees them as her babies.

“Get changed and go back to bed,” says Scully. “I’ll go get my heating pad.”

She’s trying to be quiet when she tiptoes back into the bedroom but Mulder wakes up anyway.

“Everything okay?” he asks.

“It’s Katie,” she says. “She’s having bad cramps again.”

“Poor thing,” Mulder says. He’s sitting up now and rubbing his eyes. “Anything I can do?”

“No, go back to sleep,” Scully says. “I’m getting her my heating pad.”

She walks back to Katie’s room and sees the girl curled up in a ball in bed. She unplugs the lamp on her bedside table and plugs in the heating pad.

“Here you go,” she says. “I’m putting it on a timer in case you fall asleep.”

Katie presses the still-cool pad against her lower abdomen and wraps herself around it.

“Try to get some sleep,” Scully says. She leans down, pushes a strand of hair off of Katie’s face, and kisses her on the forehead.

“Thanks, mom,” Katie whispers. Her eyes are shut but Scully knows it’s more out of pain than restfulness.

Scully slides back into bed and rests her head on Mulder’s chest. He drapes his arms around her and presses a kiss on the top of her head.

“She’s lucky to have you,” he whispers. “We all are.”

“I feel so bad for her,” Scully says.

“What else can we do?”

“There’s a chance that birth control pills will make her periods more manageable but…” she trails off.

“You don’t want her thinking we’re giving her the go-ahead to…” Mulder can’t finish the sentence either.

“Mmhmm,” Scully mumbles into his chest.

“I think it’s worth talking about,” she hears Mulder say. “She’s a smart girl, I think we can trust her to be responsible. And besides, it’s hard to see her in this much pain.”

“I know,” Scully says. Her eyes are closed now and she feels herself drifting off. “I’ll talk to her about it.”

Mulder holds her closer and they both fall back asleep.

The next morning, Scully goes to check on Katie. She’s still curled up in bed and Scully sits beside her and strokes her head.

“Get any sleep?” Scully asks, although the second she sees her daughter she doubts it. All the color is drained from Katie’s face and there are dark hollows under her eyes.

“No,” Katie says weakly. “I still feel like shit.”

“Why don’t you stay home today? Try to get some rest.”

“Mm, okay.” Katie closes her eyes again and Scully kisses her head.

Downstairs, she finds Mulder and William devouring cereal at the kitchen table.

Mulder looks up when Scully walks in. “How’s Katie?” he asks.

“Not great. She’s going to stay home from school today.”

“What’s wrong with Katie?” William asks, still shoveling cereal into his mouth. Scully is amazed by how much her son can eat. He’s lean but seems to grow an inch a week, already at eye level with his father.

“Cramps,” says Scully. “Pretty bad.”

“Yikes,” William cringes. Scully knows he’s a little uncomfortable with the subject even though they’ve always been open with him about the biology of it all.

“I don’t have any classes today,” Mulder says in between bites. “I can cancel my office hours and stay home with her.”

“I think she’ll like that,” Scully says. Katie will probably stay in bed all day, but Scully feels better knowing Mulder will be here in case she needs anything. After years of plugging in Scully’s heating pad for her and scavenging motel vending machines for her favorite chocolates, he’s had more than enough experience dealing with menstruating women.

“What do you have going on today, Will?” she asks.

“Nothing special,” he shrugs. “I have that physics test and then baseball practice after school.”

Mulder smiles at Scully from across the table and she returns his grin. She knows he loves that their son plays baseball not only because it’s his favorite sport, but because of the memories of their evening of “batting practice” so many years ago.

“Okay,” Scully says. She looks at her watch. “Come on, I’ll drop you off. We better get going.”

Around noon, Katie finally makes her way out of bed and downstairs. Mulder’s on the couch reading and she lies down alongside him.

“How are you feeling?” He asks.

“Not great,” she sighs. “I texted mom. She’s going to bring me some muscle relaxers from the hospital.”

Mulder whistles. “Oooh, she’s getting you the good stuff. I told you there are perks of having a doctor in the house.”

Katie laughs quietly. “What’re you reading?”

“Oh, you know, a firsthand account of telekinesis.”

Katie gives him an eyeroll that would make her mother proud. Mulder smiles and rubs her back. He’s constantly surprised by how much their children take after him and Scully while still fully being their own unique people. William’s a straight-A, overachieving student like his mother but with his father’s curiosity and open-mindedness. Katie has Mulder’s sense of humor and defiant nature paired with Scully's skepticism for anything she can’t prove with her own eyes.

“I’m so proud of you,” he says.

“For what?” she asks.

“For being you.”

“I guess this is a bad time to tell you I’m actually a shapeshifting alien who’s taken over Katie’s body.”

Mulder beams. “You must be feeling a little better if you’re giving me the business like that.”

“Maybe a little,” she says.

He traces circles on her back until she’s gently snoring. He’s abandoned his book and is now watching his daughter sleep, like he and Scully used to do when she and William were little, so in awe that they exist. They still talk about how lucky they are, to be blessed with not one but two miracles after believing for so long there was no chance they could have their own children.

Their babies are nearly all grown up now. Katie has started high school and William is already talking about colleges, but he’s never stopped being in awe of them. And as much as it breaks his heart that his daughter is suffering, he’s thankful she still lets him and Scully take care of her—at least for now.

The interesting thing about Allison Hargreeves

Y’know, despite how I often see Allison characterized in kidfics, as a favorite daddy’s girl, from what we see in the show, that’s not actually accurate.

Now, I haven’t read the comics, so I’m just going off the show here, but the scenes we do see of Allison’s childhood are: she snaps at Reginald for always being too busy to tell them goodnight, she snaps at him at Ben’s funeral when he blames them for his death, she sneaks out with Luther to the attic. In all instances, she’s rebelling, and in the first two, it’s blatant, and she’s met with derision. I’m willing to excuse the last because Luther did it as well, but actually- let’s talk about that.

We all know how loyal Luther was as a kid to his dad. As the “hero/golden child”, Reginald had a control over him that never really slipped, and it meant that, in comparison to say, Klaus, he was way less likely to rebel. Yet here we see him doing something obviously against the rules just for pleasure. Ofc a part of it is just that they’re repressed teenagers who needed SOME outlet, but do you think Luther was the one who thought of that? Nope.

So: we see two instances where Allison contradicts or criticizes her father and is met with derision in their childhood, and a scene where she convinces her most loyal brother to disobey their father, and they are both punished. Allison doesn’t rumor her way out of any of them - including, as far as we know, punishment.

The only actual evidence we have that she’s a daddy’s girl is because Diego says so, and well, it’s Diego - how else are you supposed to be broody and dramatic and misunderstood unless the rest of your family just Could Not Understand your rebellion? Plus, we know that him and Allison have a complicated dynamic - he doesn’t seem to outright dislike her as he does Luther or Vanya at the start of the series, but they’re both clearly used to insulting each other back and forth and there was probably some degree of antagonism in their childhood - they’re too similar for their to not have been. So I don’t know how much stock we put in that.

Outside from that, most of the evidence we have seems to point to Allison as being a pretty rebellious kid. She actively criticizes their childhood, seems to be close to Klaus, a ‘disappointment’ child, and as we see in S2, is actively against injustice. Sure, this could be a recent development, but I doubt it was a totally new thing. Unlike Luther, she’s not loyal to Reginald - she’s ambitious and smart and ruthless, and she doesn’t get herself into a situation that’s so bad she can’t get out of like Five, so Reginald still has to worry about her, because she hasn’t stopped herself from being a threat like Klaus effectively has.

So, I actually think she was one of the most rebellious of the Umbrellas as a kid. Evidence seems to point to show!Vanya being less rebellious than her comic book counterpart in childhood, so probably more than her. The reason we might not see it as much is because Allison was smart - when she needed to so something, she didn’t get caught. And I can bet the second she turned 18 and was legally emancipated, she was on a plane to Hollywood.

But where does this leave her relationship with her father? Well, truthfully, I don’t know. We know at least some information about all the sibling’s relationships with Reginald - Luther was the golden child and Diego the scapegoat, Vanya was the neglected lost child and Klaus was the locked-up comedian. We see him exhibit some care for all of them but Klaus and Diego - he seems to at least respect Five somewhat in S2, expresses concern for Luther in the barbershop with Klaus (I’d also like to note the way Klaus flinches and visibly calms himself when Reginald grabs his face here - it seems like an indication Reginald actually did directly physically abuse his kids sometimes), and gives Vanya Grace’s violin (I think it’s Grace’s?). He gives Ben a statue but idk how much of that is care and how much is just him gaslighting his kids. The ones he seemed to outright dislike where Klaus and Diego.

As for Five, Ben, and Allison, we know very little about their relationship with Reginald. As I said before, I think Five did respect him, even before he time travelled - though his regrets about that definitely played a role in how he saw his father, the way he talked in the running away scene does kind of confirm this for me. He seems to be acting in a bit of a ‘look at me’ way - he’s overly dramatic, stabbing a knife into the chair, makes sure he’s in an environment where he will be the center of his father’s attention, and breaks multiple rules, which we know Reginald dislikes. He’s warring for his father’s attention by disobeying him.

This makes me think of the other ways Five acts - ex: “I don’t think I’m better than you, Number One, I know I am.” What’s interesting about this is not only how childish it is, but the way he reverts back to their childhood numbers, almost. I think that Reginald must have nurtured a weird superiority complex in Five - that while he may have been a lower number he was still smarter, stronger, faster than his siblings, and he had to be better than the. This was how he kept control over someone so obviously rebellious and curious - he made him reliant on his respect as well as approval, made he himself constantly push and exhaust himself. I’m sure he meant to be more controlling - I doubt he expected Five to attempt time travelling even after he said not to, for example, but still.

So how does this relate to Allison? Well, I think Allison’s relationship with Reginald was actually similar to this. Allison, like Five, is intelligent, resourceful, ambitious, curious, and has a power hard for Reginald to control. He can’t break her with disappointment, can’t lock her up, can’t keep her loyal - so how does he control her? He makes her think she’s better. She’s Number Three, sure, but while her brother’s worry about their silly rivalry, she’s the smart one. She’s better than them - she has to be better than them, has to be better than just loyalty, because unlike for Luther, more is expected from her.

Both Five and Allison actively try and get Reginald’s attention by disobeying him, and they both seem more tied to their abilities than any of the others, even Klaus, do. I can imagine that, for both of them, Reginald could not just brainwash them into loyalty and call it a day - so instead, he deprived them of just enough attention so they’d feel the need to get it, put them on a pedestal so they would feel the need to earn respect, be better than loyalty. For Five, it backfired, but for Allison, it kept from just controlling her father to do whatever she wanted, as we see in the scene when they’re younger with Luther.

So Diego isn’t totally wrong about her being a ‘daddy’s girl’ either, but he’s not right - the favoritism I don’t doubt Five and Allison both got shown was almost Reginald telling them to earn his approval, to impress him- and he made them think they were the only ones good enough to do so. It’s how he kept arguably his two most dangerous members under control, even if it backfired for one.

The more I watch the show, the more interaction I want between Allison and Five. They’re both so similar, and honestly, after writing this, I could see them having a bit of a childhood rivalry - not as blatant as Luther and Diego, they were ‘above’ that after all, but maybe something more subtle. At least until Five ran away.

Scorpio, we gathered once we stopped laughing about it (briefly. Very briefly. To be honest we're still laughing), is Vector's evil twin who lives in a parallel universe and is played by Tom Hardy. Just so that all the people reading this post can be on the same page as us.

So...Chaotix time, uh? Let's see.

1) Zombot Arc (IDW comics)

An easy guess, if you know me at all. Watching these poor sods lose Charmy to a virus, find him for the briefest time and then get torn apart again, only for Espio to have to fight his zombified family until the very end...It was a blow to the stomach after the other, and yet it really gave the reader a sense of how tied they are to each other. Espio especially got a focus that he isn't often on the receiving end of, which was very nice to see.

And now, for the panel that irreversibly broke me:

2) The case of the Pirate Princess (Sonic Universe)

Genre-mashing at its finest. Three detectives (who are also idiots) are tasked with rescuing a princess (who technically doesn't want to be rescued) from a bunch of pirates (who are actually better at this found family thing than most) and accidentally find a lost treasure in the process. The treasure, by the way, isn't worth squat. And they don't even get paid well. But hey, at least they made new friends!

I dunno, this arc is just so very sweet. They bicker all the fucking time, but in a very peculiar, believable way that most siblings will know at first glance. Plus, they let Charmy be an actual kid in this, and you KNOW I'm a kidfic fan first and a human being second. He asks Espio for spelling help! He makes friends with everyone! He wants reassurances from Vector that he can still be a detective! The entire story ends with them using what little money they got to buy him something! I love them so much!!!!!!

In short: perfect dumbasses, all of them.

3) Hedgehog Hunt (Sonic X)

They're running a cafe in space. Child labor laws apparently don't exist there so Charmy is involved too. Espio refuses service to Doctor Eggman in multiple annoying ways. Vector plays the piano and becomes oddly reminiscent of Morgan when he was playing for Achille Lauro, and THEN goes to buy spaceship parts in a space mall because Sonic and friends are going incognito.

I don't know, man, I don't have an explanation for any of this. It's amazing to see, though.

4) Galactic Gumshoes (Sonic X)

You know when you are assigned a task, set out to complete that task, mix it up with something else and end up completely unrelated shit? This is exactly what happens to them in this episode. They're sent to deliver some clothes and while they're at it they try to kidnap two children. As one does.

It's just so quintessentially them, though. Charmy literally mocks Vector while the guy (who is, lest we forget, his boss and father figure) gets beaten ON HIS OWN SHIP! Espio is so done with everything and the narrative always forgets him! Sonic X was wild, guys, I'm so glad I rewatched it in quarantine.

5) Penders era Archie comics as a whole

Listen. These comics weren't good. In fact, they were ugly as sin and with awful storylines. But they were so atrocious that they accidentally become comedy gold, and I can't NOT mention them.

Charmy was a teenage prince with a betrothed, and his friend overdosed on Lemon Sundrop Dandelion (yes, you're reading the beginning letters correctly). Vector was a misogynist. Espio in the future had a Littlefinger goatee and two daughters whose only purpose was to snog the local bad boy. They don't actually do anything useful beside harassing Knuckles' girlfriend and occasionally eating fast food meals. If I were to make this stuff up no one would believe me, and yet Ken Penders kept a straight face and put it in actual, physical comics.

Dark times for the Chaotix then, folks. Dark times.

Kidfic: Growing Up

Prompt: "I love you, no matter who you love or who you want to be. I just want you to be happy."

Group: Thomas & Theo

Summary: Theo is a teenager now, and that means he starts noticing other people.

There's an ice cream shop about ten minutes from the apartment that they go to every Friday. When Thomas and Justine have other assignments, they enlist a family friend to take Theo so he doesn't miss out. It is a normal family thing to do, and they could always use more of that.

Especially now that Theo is 14 and his wyldfae characteristics have become noticeable. In Theo's case that meant his hair turning a startling shade of indigo and heterochromatic eyes. Feeling self-conscious about it, he had started hiding his long braids under a beanie whenever they went out. No signs of magic yet.

Thomas sits in the back of the shop, letting Theo make the order. They're regulars at the local shop, so most of the workers have started picking up a few signs, and it's good for him to socialize with non-family. Theo has the order list written out on a notesheet in case there are miscommunication problems.

His son made it through with minimal problems, a notable improvement over the early days when he would freeze up. He lingers at the cash register though, with the tall redhead who looks 16 or 17. Thomas is at the wrong angle to make out the exchange, although he notes how his son smiles to himself when he returns to their table with two ice cream cones in hand.

"What did he say?" Thomas signs in question.

Theo shrugs and ducks his head a little, as if embarrassed. Then, "he said I have nice eyes."

Huh. That's nice, if unexpected. Thomas puts it down to the worker trying to be friendly and Theo not being used to compliments from strangers.

But it lingers in his mind, a flicker of unease. Theo is starting to grow up, even if he's still very much a child. So he brings it up again later when they're at home.

Theo is sprawled out on his bed, doodling something in his art book. Thomas flicks the lights off and on again to announce his presence. He notes how quick Theo is to snap the art book shut but decides not to pry; unlike his own father, he understands it's best to let kids have their privacy. He takes a seat on the edge of the bed; he has to approach this carefully. It could be nothing, after all, just a friendly shop worker.

"You seemed to get along with that boy," Thomas signs once he has his attention, keeping his expression at neutral friendliness. "What is his name?"

"L-E-O-N," he fingerspells. Then, "I like him."

Theo ducks his head a little, trying not to smile. Thomas' senses sharpen and the Hunger stirs, finally recognizing what he hadn't wanted to see: attraction.

Not White Court, Thomas reminds himself, trying to push the panic down. His son won't accidentally commit murder the first time he gets into bed with another person. But Theo is perceptive, has always needed to be. He sees something of his father's turmoil and mistakes it for something else.

"Never mind," he says, disappointment and hurt dripping off him as he starts to withdraw into himself.

Thomas winces when he realizes his mistake; at least here, he knows what the right thing is. He nudges Theo, waiting until his son is looking up at him again.

"I love you, no matter who you love or who you want to be," Thomas reassures him. "I just want you to be happy."

Theo relaxes then, looking happy and relieved, making Thomas wonder how long this had been on his mind. Then his son wraps his arms around him, snuggling into his side the way he did when he was younger, and the negative thoughts melt away.

okay so the first one is my most well developed idea and would definitely be the longest, my plan alone is 5k words. its exes-friends-lovers again. they used to have an online long-distance relationship when they were teenagers but inevitably broke up bc they were young and stupid and thousands of miles away from each other. years later George stumbles across a Minecraft video on youtube and releases its dream and he's like omg no surely not?? basically they reconnect again and slowly get reaquainted but they are much older and maturer now and its very nostalgic and cute and kinda angsty and i have fully planned this from start to finish but i can't write it for some reason

next one is a kidfic wooo. basically dream is a young single dad who is kinda sad and alone but he has a kid and he has sapnap who has always been there for him. sapnap convinces him to go out and enjoy himself for once while he looks after kid, and while out dream meets george. one night stand happens but dream has internal conflict about his feelings and what is best for kid. feelings and cute kid stuff and probably a small amount of explicit stuff. i have also got a plan for this one and it likely wouldn't be as long as the previous one but still decent sized.

holiday fling in europe au. k so george goes on holiday w some uni friends (wilbur and niki) after uni to chill and there he meets dream. they hit it off immediately and end up spending a lot of time together. both of them know it won't last so they make the most of it while they can and enjoy themselves in a rlly nice warm place. a bit more spicy, pretty scenery and good vibes and slightly bittersweet,

george works in his parents' rural bnb by the coast in england. one day during a storm two backpackers (dream and spanap) stumble in soaking wet. sapnap gets sick from the cold so they stay longer than intended so george shows dream around nd they get closer. this one would likely set in like 80s or 90s before fancy technology was big. another pretty scenery and good vibes but also bittersweet actually.

zombie apocalypse au. george is with a group of survivors (sapnap, karl, quackity n some others). he goes out on a supply trip one day but gets injured and passes out. he sees a figure as it all afdes and he assumes its a zombie and hes about to die. he wakes up though and it turns out he was saved by someone - dream! dream is a lone survivor wandering about and together they try and get george back to his group and have some adventures and encounters on the way woo.

Random thought. Zuko gets turned into a toddler shortly after being banished?

Oh hohoho, I like this prompt. And part of the reason I like it is that it lets me do something I don't see a lot of people doing, and that is a little bit of dark kidfic. Kidfic has kind of an awful reputation, for being cutesy, and for bad writing from adults who don't know enough about kids to make their child characters believable. But just as fundementally kidfic all too often lacks real conflict. People tend to be leery of writing darkness in two stories with children, unless they're rioting overt horror, and even then, kids often have a certain amount of plot protection. The desire to keep children safe is a deeply-rooted instinct. And this instinct, combined with related cultural phenomena, and the idealization of childhood as a state, leads I think to an adult forgetfulness of what childhood is really like, and what children are.

Children are people who are experiencing almost everything they come across for the very first time, which is what leads to the sense of childish wonder. Not only are they encountering these things for the first time, but they are building as they go their framework in which to put those things, and new experiences. But children are also small people, who lack the physical emotional and cognitive abilities necessary to provide for and protect themselves. They are uniquely vulnerable. Children are often discounted and their fears dismissed as merely the products of their own childish misunderstanding. Being a child can be terrifying, frustrating, even isolating. Being a child means being forced to rely on others to care for you.

So how does this relate to newly toddler Zuko? How does Zuko become a toddler, and how old is toddler Zuko? To answer the last question first, I'm going to make him an older toddler, so two. He's walking, he's getting pretty okay at running and climbing, and is talking a little bit, and playing pretend, like pretending to drink out of empty cups.

As to the first and second question, let's say Iroh did some spirit a favor, and that spirit decided to pay him back by listening to Iroh's unspoken nostalgia about when Zuko was little, (and Lu Ten was still alive) and Zuko had been secure and happy. Only this spirit gets it wrong, and Zuko has all his memories. Only now Zuko's two, has less than a hundred words to his name, and no ability articulate or even process these memories at all. You think he was struggling to process his trauma as a teenager? Now he's a toddler and it's so much worse.

Iroh has absolutely no idea what happened, but he does know that the hunt to find the Avatar is off. The hunt to find Ursa in the hopes that she can help with her son are on instead.
