Canada* 2007 Toyota Tacoma, Price vs Reliability.
Hello,
I have my eyes on a 07 tacoma asking price is $15000. I would like to see the communities opinion on these little trucks.
I am new to the import truck scene. Have had fords and chev 1/2 tons.
I see lots for sale with 200xxx km and above for over the $10 000.
My problem is buying a base trim 07 for 15k. Does low km alone bring value of this truck up.
Price wise locally its comparable to a TRD with 200 000 km with some goodies.
Pros: 40xxx kms, zero rust and clean inside and out. No modifications. Good brand track record.
Cons: price, a little small and gutless. Open diff.
Chime in on your expierences and opinions with the tacos and what you think they are worth.
Thanks.

Ford Ranger 2019 the wait was worth it
Ford Ranger 2019 the wait was worth it
Ford Ranger 2019 the wait was worth it
The return of the Ford Ranger van was announced some time ago. It is now done, and it touches these days the bitumen (or snow), occupying the courses of Canadian dealers. Why does she come back after eight years of absence? And why did it take so long to finally admit that Toyota and GM were right to put their energy in this segment? First, it must be understood that for Ford, the F-150 pickup truck takes precedence over everything. And of course, imagining the revival of the Ranger, it was estimated that very few buyers would abandon the full-size van in favor of an intermediate model. Since the F-Series has dominated the market for more than fifty years, it's pointless to tell you that every vehicle that can drive down the F-150's annual sales is considered an enemy. Even if it is a house model. That's why we did not really like the idea of relaunching the Ranger in North America, especially knowing that it would no longer be a compact and affordable van like in the past.
That said, it has also been realized over time that customers in search of an intermediate pickup truck were not only growing, but also different from those who obtain the F-150. In this regard, more than 550,000 mid-size vans were sold in North America last year, Toyota of course dominating the market with the Tacoma range . Ford had no choice but to admit its strategic mistake and to start producing the Ranger. The problem is that no factory was available in the short term to make it. That's why Ford abruptly stopped producing the Focus in Detroit, which first welcomed the Ranger models after more than a year of redevelopment and modernization of the facilities. It should be noted that the Bronco 2020 utility, which will share the same structure as the Ranger, will also be produced shortly.
Ford Ranger 2019 the wait was worth it
From Thailand to Michigan The Ranger van that North Americans are discovering these days is not new. Indeed, it has already existed for several years on the side of Thailand, being marketed in Asia, Europe and South America. Of course, Ford has taken care to modify and adapt it primarily for compliance, but also to meet the needs of buyers. But now you understand why the style of his body is not as strong, or at least in harmony with that of the F-150 here. For now, the offer of the Ranger is simple. Three versions (XL, XLT and Lariat) and two choices of cabins, with respectively one body length. A first handicap against the competition which, with the exception of the Ridgeline , always offers a choice of lengths of board with the models with double cabin. The total It was at the wheel of a Lariat version with technology group and FX4 off-road package that I traveled some 1,300 kilometers last week. The price of the test model was $ 50,000, which is a far cry from the previous generation. Of course, the reflex of many people has been to mention that at this price, we can get a well-equipped F-150, which is true. But we must realize that not all buyers want to be driving such a juggernaut. For many, the maneuverability and versatility of an easy-to-drive urban vehicle is also of great importance. What's more, statistics show that the mid-size vans sold by GM and Toyota have lower depreciation than full-size models. And of course, it will be the same at Ford. But, I grant you, the Ranger van is not given.
Ford Ranger 2019 the wait was worth it
Fortunately, we find at this price a complete equipment, except for the heated steering wheel. I would add that at this price, we could have included a damping cylinder for the lowering of the tailgate which, despite its design of aluminum, bangs hard after making his free fall. That said, we get voice-activated navigation, dual-mode air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot and lane detection, high-fidelity audio system and the inevitable connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Things you will not have in a Nissan Frontier van ! The finish on board is irreproachable. Again, the driving position does not have the aesthetic passion of a genuine American product, but everything is ergonomic and perfectly tied. The seats are comfortable, even behind. On the other hand, it is a pity that the seat can be raised in only one section, question of versatility. Disorders of Mustang Under the hood obviously does not hide the Mustang V8, but rather its four-cylinder. A revamped version of this turbocharged 2.3-liter engine, which generates 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. What to allow the vehicle to accelerate and tow with the passion and power of rivals V6. In fact, Ford is proud to offer the segment's best towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. Still!
Ford Ranger 2019 the wait was worth it
Without being able to tow with the vehicle, I have no doubt about his abilities. On the one hand because the mechanics are powerful, but mainly because the structure of the vehicle is extremely solid. It is felt in the driving, which obviously contributes to this feeling of invincibility so much sought after by the amateurs of vans. The Ranger is also very fun to drive because of precise steering. The steering circle is weak, the suspensions are well calibrated and the braking power is excellent. Congratulations to engineers who have greatly improved the soundproofing of the cabin, thus obtaining the best-isolated cabin segment. Mechanically, the power is always up. It is clear that the automatic transmission constantly switches from one report to the other since there are ten. However, we do not feel it very much. Why such a box paired with a four-cylinder? For a question of comfort and economy, but also because it would adapt it seems very well to more serious work.
Ford Ranger 2019 the wait was worth it
Without having worked heavily with the vehicle, I would say that the main benefit of this box and this engine is felt in urban areas, where the power and performance are always optimized to obtain the best fuel economy that is . A much more efficient performance than the competition which displays between 13.2 and 15.8 liters per 100 km average consumption, while the Ranger consumes 11.8 liters. Unfortunately, the balance sheet darkens greatly when it comes to economy on the road, since the vehicle records a rating similar to that of Colorado / Canyon V6 engine, 9.8 L / 100 km. And believe me, because this is a turbocharged engine that works more at high speed and in cold weather, this average posted is very optimistic. For example, driving only on the road, at a temperature of about -15 degrees Celsius, resulted in an average of 12.4 L / 100 km. One liter more than with Colorado conducted a few weeks ago in such conditions. However, the average obtained in urban areas and at a similar temperature was only 12.6 L / 100 km. Curious, is not it? That said, this is proof that this powertrain is better suited to the city than for long journeys on the road. This also tells me that by hanging heavy loads, consumption will climb to almost unimaginable heights.
Ford Ranger 2019 the wait was worth it
Where is the Raptor? The tested Ranger was equipped with the FX4 off-road package, which is essentially described by a firmer suspension, a locking differential and the addition of protective plates. Nothing really aggressive, especially compared to what Chevrolet and Toyota offer. On the one hand, the ruthless Colorado ZR2 Bison able to cope with the worst conditions, just like the Tacoma TRD Pro who launched the ball of pickup trucks designed to climb Everest. At Ford, the Ranger Raptor pickup truck is waiting. However, it exists in other markets, but it seems - according to the latest information obtained - that the probate costs are too high. The existence of the North American Ranger van is proof of this: Ford is able to change its mind. Hope she will do it again. In the meantime, this truck still serves us a good 4x4 system which, moreover, is delivered to us as standard. Indeed, no two-wheel drive version is proposed. At least in Canada. Ford rightly considers that this market is minimal and that it is useless to force dealers to order models that will stick in their yard. However, we would have liked the 4x4 system to have an automatic mode like the Chevrolet Colorado, more user-friendly for everyday driving. Will we add it soon? One thing is certain, Ford has been able to effectively adapt a product that was clearly not designed for our market. Depending on demand, it is clear that the Dearborn manufacturer will invest to make additional improvements as well as a wider range of models. A Ranger King Ranch, Limited, or even a high-performance ST version? Who knows what the future holds. In the meantime, this van is enhancing the offer of a rising segment. It may not eclipse the competition as the manufacturer claims, but the proposal is serious, extremely competitive, and deserves attention. Ford Ranger Evaluation Sheet Trial version -Lariat 4x4 Super Crew (5.0 ') Price range -nd Price of the model under review -ford ranger 2019 price $ 42,289 Basic warranty -3 years / 60,000 km Consumption (city / road / observed) -11.8 / 9.8 / 12.4 L / 100km options -nd Competitive models -Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline, Jeep Gladiator, Toyota Frontier, Toyota Tacoma Strong points -Robust construction -Amazing comfort -Excellent soundproofing -Good maneuverability Weak points -High price -One body length (double cabin) -4x4 system without automatic mode -High highway consumption Consumption -The conditions under which I was able to drive him were execrable. Now, I've seen a high consumption on the road but a reasonable consumption in the city, a sign that a four-cylinder turbocharged and strong couple is working well Comfort -Of course, an extended wheelbase with a 6.5-foot box would have contributed to more comfort. That said, the excellent soundproofing and structural rigidity come to support a suspension that does a great job. Performances -You will not feel the 270 horsepower from this engine accelerating. However, the generous couple can get out of trouble in any situation, and brilliantly. Multimedia system -Very effective. A system that has improved over the years to become one of the best in the industry. And hat for the sound of the optional B & O brand audio system. Driving approval -We take pleasure in driving the Ranger because of its great maneuverability. It feels solid, able to face the worst conditions and able to sneak almost anywhere. General appreciation -Is the Ranger really better than the competition? No. But this is a serious rival that is likely to convince some current buyers of F-150. -SEE ALSO:

The Best Ford Ranger Is the Cheap One—Here’s Why
The Ford Ranger finally came home from its eight-year overseas stay last year. We couldn’t wait to test it and immediately dropped it into our Farm Truck comparison, in which we put a $43,695 2019 Ford Ranger Lariat 4×4 up against a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71, 2019 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition, and 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. After our testing, the one question we all asked about the Ranger was, “Is this really what we’ve been waiting for?” Aside from its powertrain, the Ranger felt every one of its eight years old, with awful body control, a cramped, rental-grade interior, and quality not befitting its price.
Recently, though, we had a chance to test a bare-bones, $29,445 2019 Ranger XL STX SuperCab 4×2, and we think we stumbled upon the sweet spot in the Ranger lineup. Here’s why:
It’s Quick
When it comes to midsize pickup trucks, most of the time you’re better off skipping the base engine. Chevy, GMC, Nissan, and Toyota all offer naturally aspirated four-cylinders in varying levels of wheeziness as standard on their trucks. Ford got a lot of things wrong in importing the Ranger to the U.S., but to its credit, it really got was its powertrain right. Making 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, the Ranger’s standard 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 is among the most powerful in the segment. It’s also paired with the most modern transmission in the segment, a 10-speed automatic that has dedicated sport and tow/haul modes. In a bare-bones truck like this extended cab Ranger XL STX, that makes for a pretty quick truck; it hustles from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and through the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds at 92.9 mph.
It’s Capable
Thanks to its powerful standard engine, its wide and deep 6-foot bed, and lack of extra features, the base Ranger SuperCab 4×2 makes a great work truck. Our tester’s payload capacity was 1,860 pounds—more than some heavily optioned half-ton trucks—and it’s capable of towing up to 7,500 pounds.
The Ranger feels more than up to the task of working. With 1,000 pounds of payload in the bed, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, and it’ll run a 15.5-second quarter mile at 89.1 mph. When hitched to a 4,000-pound trailer, the Ranger performed well, too. It accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 12.5 seconds, and it ran a 19.1-second quarter mile at 72.4 mph.
It’s Cheap (If You Skip the Options)
Modern pickup trucks are extraordinarily expensive. Back in 1983, its first year of production, a brand-new Ranger started at $6,203, which is about $16,000 in 2019 dollars when accounting for inflation. Nowadays the average transaction price for a midsize pickup truck is cresting $33,000, so our Ranger’s $27,625 base price and $29,445 as-tested price seem like bargains. True, you don’t get anything in the way of creature comforts, but if you’re looking for nothing more than a simple, honest, affordable work truck to add to your garage, the Ranger XL STX 4×2 is worth considering.

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro First Drive: Shocking Development
Why the sudden fascination with pickups capable of driving really fast across a rocky, dusty desert? Nobody knew we needed any such thing until Ford introduced its wide-fendered, tall-enough-to-need-clearance-lights Raptor. Chevy eventually responded with the dimensionally tidier Colorado ZR2, and now Toyota is taking aim squarely at Chevy (and preemptively at Ford, should it decide to bring the Ranger Raptor here) by redesigning the suspension of its 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro for Baja racing.
FANCY SNORKEL Anybody can Sawzall a hole in the fender and bolt a snorkel to the A-pillar, but the TRD Pro snorkel is designed in. Its fender hole is stamped in the raw steel at the factory, and hence gets the full anti-corrosion paint treatment. It also attaches to a built-in roof-rack fastening point on the roof, so no new holes are created up there. The head can be swiveled backwards to prevent ingesting snow in blizzard driving, and the head is tethered to remain with the truck should a bird or debris knock it loose. Please don’t rely on this snorkel for fording 6-foot deep water, though, as there are water drain holes down low that will admit engine-killing external water.
Key to each of these trucks’ saguaro-slaloming capabilities is a sophisticated set of name-brand shock absorbers. Chevy made big headlines by utilizing Multimatic spool-valve shocks—a technology previously utilized primarily on cars that race on paved circuits. Toyota (and Ford) chose to go with a more typical supplier of off-road racing dampers—Fox Shox. What they all strive to do is provide comfy, cushy ride quality over the sorts of small bumps one finds on paved roads, while ramping up the damping rates as the speed and size of the bump events increases to keep the suspension from bottoming out harshly, which can cause serious damage. Fox does this using internal bypass passages that provide position-dependent damping-rate variability.
Here’s how the Fox Shox work on the Tacoma: As the 1.8-inch-diameter piston moves up and down through its range of travel (which is increased by 0.7 inch in front, 0.8 inch in back relative to base and TRD Off Road Tacomas) various different orifices are exposed for the oil to travel through. Each provides a different damping rate. The front shocks feature five jounce and three rebound zones; the rears provide seven jounce and four rebound rates. The lightest damping rate near the center of the shock’s travel promises noticeably smoother on-road ride relative to the previous model’s simpler Bilstein shocks and relative to the base Tacoma shocks. The rear shocks also feature 2-inch “piggyback” external reservoirs that serve to increase the volume of hydraulic oil and thereby keep all the oil cooler during prolonged desert running. One downside of the Fox design—its position-dependent nature means that adding aftermarket lift kits and so forth without replacing the shocks could drastically alter the truck’s driving dynamics.
Instead of tubes, orifices, and springy shim packs, Multimatic shocks send oil through spool valves that move inside sleeves, at a rate controlled by a spring. These valves and sleeves each have orifices laser-cut in them for oil to flow through, and by using computational fluid dynamics to precisely design the size and shape of these orifices, Multimatic claims that nearly any force/damping curve an engineer desires can be delivered with high accuracy and vastly less iterative development work than is typically required when developing shimmed-orifice shocks. Each Colorado shock uses three spool valves. This design tends to be pretty expensive.
Before we take the Tacoma for a spin, let’s run through the rest of its 2019 upgrades, which include new front springs that add 1 inch of ride height, a larger front anti-roll bar—1.2 versus 1.1 inch diameter (still hollow), progressive-rate off-road leaf springs out back that allow more jounce travel on rough terrain, and 16-inch TRD Pro wheels that add an inch of track width front and rear. (Note that the stiffer front bar is designed to make the truck more eager to rotate and hence more fun to drive on and off road at some tiny expense of its rock-crawling articulation.) There’s also a snortier cat-back exhaust with a black-chrome tip and a new Desert Air Intake that keeps the engine breathing cleaner, less dusty air from above the windshield. Neither the intake nor the exhaust alters the output of the 278-hp V-6. Rigid Industries LED foglamps brighten nighttime trail rides, and a TRD Pro–badged quarter-inch-thick front skidplate is strong enough to be used to jack up the vehicle. New standard equipment includes a moonroof and the Entune Premium JBL audio system. All these upgrades increase the price by just $940 (with the manual) or $1,645 (automatic).
To test out the new Tacoma TRD Pro, Toyota attempted to create a mini Baja in its backyard at a former limestone quarry known as Northwest OHV Park in Bridgeport, Texas, about 80 miles northwest of Dallas. The desert simulation was compromised by several inches of falling rain that added to what was already the wettest September in recorded Texas history.
My first few trails involve careful tiptoeing up and down some precipitous and slick rocky hills, which the truck’s Crawl Control system accomplishes with astonishing ease. I especially like being able to select among the system’s five speed settings using a dedicated rotary knob on the overhead console instead of toggling a cruise-control button or something. The knob lets me see at a glance what speed is selected when slowing back down to a crawl. The 265/70R16 Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure tires impress with their levels of grip despite tread blocks filled with greasy red clay.
Next I head down to the broad sand/mud pit where the trucks can reach higher speeds to really get those Fox Shox pumping. Maybe the rain and continued use by multiple journalists has made the course particularly rough, but the seat of my pants is recording a level of ride quality that ranks well short of plush. And plush is kind of what I was hoping for, having once ridden shotgun with Ironman Ivan Stewart in one of his SCORE Toyota off-road racing trucks. Sure it had 2-plus feet’s worth of suspension travel, external bypass shocks, and the like, but that rig swallowed bumps with a plushness that I was reminded of when I sampled a Colorado ZR2 in 2016. That drive involved jumping and bouncing off a bunch of large but man-made obstacles set up in a parking lot, though, and vastly different conditions experienced years apart do not a valid comparison make. Clearly the question of which shock technology reigns supreme can only be answered by a proper Head 2 Head comparison. Maybe in Baja?

My boyfriend and I have our car and house insured under State Farm, but apparently they have a zero tolerance policy and have dropped him from the insurance. My agent was saying something about 're-evaluating' at some point in the future, but he was being so rude to me about it (I wasn't the offender) that I didn't really listen, and have no interest in staying with State Farm (at least with that agent). I assume if State Farm has a 'zero-tolerance policy,' they're not the only company that does, so what companies would insure us? Wtf Is going on with car insurance companies?
Last company auto renewed my policy but i wasnt aware of this as had moved address, so to cancel it I had to pay 133 as id already started going with someone else on top of the initial deposit amount i had to pay for both companies which has took a large chunk of my money for what i feel was no fault of mine, then a month later im getting letters from my current insurance asking me to pay an extra 90 plus 25 admin fee or my policy will be cancelled AGAIN meaning a cancellation fee because when i said i had held my licence for 8 years they recon its 7 ive held it for and this makes my policy go up, thing is i got my licence on 22/08/2003 and took my poliocy out on the 19/08/2011 so they're making out when i took out the policy i only had licence for 7 years for sake of 2 days who the hell wouldnt have said 8 to that? it just seems theyre trying everything now days trawling through all your stuff finding the smallest detail just so they can get money off you or cancellation fees cos that way they're not risking anything on insurance but still gettin money off you for cancellation fees its a joke and I can really see why people think there's no point having insurance anymore. Plus I have never made a claim since I started driving but because others have in the country im being punished with premiums going up. Will it just end up where everyone who simply cant afford it thinks sod it and drives round with no insurance? surely that would make things even worse but all these cancellation fees if it happens again that I have to cancel that will be 550 ive paid in the last 2 months and still my car wont have insurance????? arghhhhh its doing my head in surely something can be done to help the customers a little more as insurance was always a headache but this is becoming ridiculous now. ..""

Toyota Probably Readying Updated TRD Pro Off-Roaders
–
Look out yonder at that landscape, and you’ll spot a a trio of Toyotas camped out in the wilderness. They’re the latest off-road-ready variants of Toyota’s Tundra and Tacoma pickups and 4Runner SUV, and they’re headed for the Chicago auto show early next month.
–
Although Toyota has yet to formally specify the deal with the trucks, it’s safe to assume they’re updated TRD Pros. The Tacoma and 4Runner are currently offered in TRD Pro guise, but the Tundra version has been on hiatus. Besides wearing model-specific bodywork, both the 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro and the 2018 4Runner TRD Pro come equipped with boulder-bashing stuff that includes a thick front skid plate, specially tuned suspensions, and knobby tires.
–
It’s possible that the updated TRD Pros will kick things up a couple of notches to elevate into the space occupied by the hard-core Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and its racing-derived Multimatic remote-reservoir shock absorbers, although we’ll have to wait a little while to find out. Expect them to continue to rely on their naturally aspirated V-6 and V-8 engines, which would mean a 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6 in the Tacoma, a 270-hp 4.0-liter V-6 in the 4Runner, and a 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 in the Tundra.

We’ll know more about the changes Toyota has in store for these trail-tackling variants of the Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner in Chicago. In the meantime, we might as well enhance the photo:

2019 Toyota Tacoma Diesel TRD Pro Redesign
For those who are looking for the strong and powerful truck to be driven next year, the new 2019 Toyota Tacoma can be something worth to consider. That is because in term of design, this truck is strong enough and that can be seen from the overall exterior. For the engine, you can make sure that this truck from Toyota will have the powerful engine that you need from a strong truck.
Strong Exterior Design of 2019 Toyota Tacoma
When you are talking about the exterior of this truck, it is true that this truck offers you the dual cabin style so that the compartment area is not that big. However, you can make sure that you can put many things that you need on the back. Unlike some other competitors of this car, this truck from Toyota might be slightly smaller and more compact compared with the others.
Even though those things above might drop the look of this truck down, this truck still has the height that you need to face the hard terrains. As an addition to that, the strong looking body design plus the additional giant grille on the front part of this truck made this truck from Toyota is becoming one nice option to have. That is one reason why the truck lovers are waiting for this 2019 Toyota Tacoma.
Powerful Engine Power on 2019 Toyota Tacoma
Even though this truck is slightly smaller than some of its competitors are, the power of this car is something that you do not need to ask anymore. That is because this truck from Toyota is already using the V6 engine, which is good enough for many trucks nowadays. As the result, you will not need to worry about the power that you can get from this truck.
You need to know that this truck offers you two different engine options. The first one is the standard engine with the maximum capacity of 2.7-Liter and the second one is the V6 engine with the maximum capacity of 3.5-Liter. The first engine can give you the average of 159 horsepower while the second engine of V6 model can give you the maximum output of 278 horsepower.
For your final consideration, a truck is not meant for speed. A truck is meant for power and strength. Because of that reason, comparing the speed might not be that reasonable since the main focus of a truck such as 2019 Toyota Tacoma is on the power and strength that you can get.

2018 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Gas and Diesel First Test Review
Weekend warriors looking for the ultimate city-friendly, go-anywhere off-road workhorse pickup used to have just one choice—the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. The new 2018 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 might just have those shoppers thinking twice about heading over to their local Toyota dealers.
The Chevy Colorado has been our favorite midsize pickup on the market ever since it won back-to-back Truck of the Year titles in 2015 and 2016. For the 2017 model year, Chevy turns the now-proven Colorado formula up a notch with the trail- and desert-ready Colorado ZR2.
Building on the solid bones of the Colorado Z71, the new Colorado ZR2 gets a long list of serious off-road add-ons, but the heart of the new truck is its suspension system. The ZR2 gets Multimatic’s famed Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers, which, when paired with a 2-inch suspension lift and 3.5-inch-wider track, gives the Colorado ZR2 the ability to run at high speeds in the desert, maximizes articulation while rock crawling, and improves ride quality and performance on the street. Chevy didn’t stop with the DSSV dampers, though. It also adds a locking rear differential, a segment-exclusive locking front differential, a beefed up rear axle and front control arms, additional body armor in the form of rock sliders, aluminum skidplates on the radiator, engine oil pan, and transfer case, and aggressive new front and rear bumpers designed to boost approach and departure angles. Rounding out the add-ons are 17-inch wheels shod with 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires.
Unlike the gas V-6-only Tacoma TRD Pro, there are two powertrains in the Colorado ZR2. A new-for-2017 3.6-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic combination is standard. The new V-6 has 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque and features cylinder deactivation and other fuel-saving tech to help it achieve a class-competitive EPA rating of 16/18/17 mpg city/highway/combined. The optional Duramax 2.8-liter turbodiesel I-4 is good for 191 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and comes mated to a six-speed auto. It’s down on horsepower compared to the V-6, but it makes up for it in both torque and fuel economy—it’s EPA rated at 19/22/20 mpg. Towing capacity, no matter the engine, is 5,000 pounds, and payload is 1,100 pounds for four-door short-bed trucks such as our two testers or 1,164 pounds for extended-cab long-bed ZR2s.
It’s worth mentioning that its primary competitor, the Tacoma TRD Pro, is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 making 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, EPA rated at 17/20/18 mpg with a six-speed manual or 18/23/20 mpg with the six-speed automatic. It’s got between 1,155 and 1,175 pounds of payload capacity depending on transmission and a 3,500-pound payload capacity.
At the track, the extra 170 pounds or so of off-road gear slows the Colorado ZR2s down a bit compared to the more street-oriented versions. The gas version is unsurprisingly the better performing of the two, thanks to its horsepower advantage and 223-pound lighter curb weight. The 0–60-mph run takes the V-6 Colorado ZR2 7.1 seconds to complete, and the quarter mile falls in 15.5 seconds at 90.0 mph. We haven’t tested a non-ZR2 Colorado with the V-6 and eight-speed auto, but we have recently tested a nearly identical GMC Canyon Denali 4×4 with the same powertrain. It needed 6.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph and 15.2 seconds to finish the quarter mile at 92.8 mph. Given its off-road-oriented tires, the gas-powered Colorado ZR2 did pretty well in braking and handling tests. It managed to finish the 60–0-mph panic stop in 135 feet, and it completed its lap of the figure eight in 29.1 seconds at 0.58 g average.
The diesel-powered Colorado ZR2 was a bit slower at the track. It needed a poky 9.7 seconds to run from 0 to 60 mph, and it finished the quarter mile in 17.2 seconds at 78.4 mph. Compared to our now-departed 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Duramax 4×4 long-termer, the extra off-road bits on the ZR2 amount to a half-second dip in 0–60 performance and a 0.4-second and 1.3-mph difference in the quarter mile. Still, the Colorado ZR2 Duramax performed relatively well in brake and handling tests; it needed 132 feet to come to a stop from 60 mph, and it managed a 29.5-second lap of the figure eight, averaging 0.55 g.
Despite the Colorado ZR2 V-6 leaving its Duramax-powered brother in the dust at the test track, out in the real world the diesel Colorado is the better drive. With the diesel powerplant, the Colorado ZR2 is eager to surge forward off the line, and it surfs wave after wave of torque. It feels quicker than its numbers would suggest around town and off-road, though passing power is now only borderline acceptable. A tightly geared eight-speed automatic and an extra 20 horsepower or so would be perfection.
The V-6-powered ZR2 isn’t without its faults, either. As we discovered on our off-road adventure through Northeastern Canada earlier this year, the Colorado ZR2’s V-6 makes good power, but the transmission doesn’t want you use to it. As is sadly the case with many GM truck transmissions, the ZR2’s eight-speed wants to keep engine revs low. Unfortunately, the V-6 doesn’t happen to make much power at low rpm, so the end result is a gearbox that’s frequently changing gears in response to the driver’s throttle inputs.
One thing the two ZR2s have in common is how well they handle on the street and how capable they are off-road. On-road, the DSSV dampers are downright magical. They counterintuitively give the Colorado a firm yet forgiving ride with minimal body roll and little to no impact harshness transferred into the cabin. With both versions of the truck featuring light, accurate steering, the ZR2s are actually surprisingly fun to drive on a good, winding back road—a dedicated Sport mode in both versions of the Colorado ZR2 would only improve the experience.
Off-road, the Colorado ZR2 is damn near unstoppable. The Colorado ZR2 is pretty much the perfect trail leader; it’s sized to fit through narrow obstacles with ease, and it’s got both the off-road hardware and the body armor to get itself out of trouble and protect itself from stranding you out in the middle of nowhere. Of the two powertrains, the diesel is again the sweet spot. Its glut of low-end torque combined with four-wheel drive and aggressive off-road tires means the diesel ZR2 always has the traction and power to drive up, over, and through obstacles.
It’s the type of truck that pushes you to explore farther off-road for no other reason than just because you can. On a recent photo shoot, I was fortunate enough to be behind the wheel of the diesel ZR2 when we discovered our normal off-road route through the desert to a particular quarry was washed out and impassable for the pack of less capable pickup trucks in the shoot. I easily pushed the ZR2 through the washout and continued on my way—driving up to the top of sand dunes and miles down random rocky desert washes while looking for an easy way to get the other pickups where they needed to be. I didn’t find one, but I definitely didn’t mind wasting my time searching.
Although the diesel Colorado ZR2 is the better all-round truck both on- and off-road, if going high speeds across the desert is your thing, the gas is the better bet. With the truck’s Off-road mode (standard on both trucks) engaged—it lowers the ABS and stability control threshold and better keeps the engine in its powerband—the gas ZR2 stays on power and gets the pickup going at near triple-digit speeds as the suspension eats up whoops and bumps. The gas ZR2’s extra horsepower also makes it a better drifter if you’re into that sort of thing—which, let’s face it, you are.
Arguably the craziest thing about the new Colorado ZR2 is that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get one. In a day and age where Ford dealers are sticking $20,000 markups on Raptors, the Colorado ZR2 V-6 comes remarkably well-equipped for its $42,780 starting price, with everything from its off-road hardware to Apple CarPlay software standard. Prices for the Colorado ZR2 Duramax start at a still-reasonable $46,280. Our loaded gas tester stickered for $45,020 and didn’t include a single option worth spending extra for save for the $395 blue paint (unless you’re really into the bed-mounted spare tire carrier). Our diesel Colorado tester stickered for $47,970; the only option box worth ticking is the full vinyl floor covering, which costs a whopping $0.
We’ll have to wait to get our hands on a Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and the coming Jeep Wrangler-based pickup before crowing the Colorado ZR2 midsize off-roader as king, but it’s safe to say Toyota and Jeep have their work cut out for them.
