Have you played IRONCLAW ?
By Jason Holmgren
A fantasy RPG where you play as anthropomorphic animals. Rather than crawling through ancient dungeons and wilderness ruins, the focus is more on noble houses and burgeoning trade guilds in a world inspired by the Italian Renaissance, complete with gunpowder.

Interesting Game Mechanics ep2: Ironclaws die pool system
This is used in a lot more than just Ironclaw, it is also used in another furry game Urban Jungle, and the space opera game Myriad Song (you can play a human in that one!)
How it works:
A character has at least 6 attributes: Body, Mind, Speed, Will, a Species, and a Career.
You assign dice to these at character creation. A starting character might have: Body d8, Mind d4, Speed d6, Will d6, Species (red fox) d6, and Career (scout) d8
you also assign ranks among skills which correspond to die sizes as well (1=d4, 2=d6, 3=d8, etc…)
When you roll for a task you will be taking a die pool of all these dice that apply. (careers and species each have a list of skills they apply too as well as other bits) so if our fox scout here were to do a bit of stealth they'd have a pool of 3d6, 1d8 (a d6 from 2 skill ranks, a d6 from their Speed attribute, a d6 from their Species attribute, and a d8 from their career)
You roll your pool and see if any die beats the difficulty number, (most tasks use 3 as the difficulty number) if so, success! sometimes you will want to know how many dice beat the difficulty as well. (used in combat for determining damage for instance)
This is only the barest bones of the system but it's those bones I'm talking about here.
Thoughts:
I've always liked this system because of how much you can say about a character with their die pools. Having high attributes (other than species and career) shows a character who has relied on their natural talents, whereas a high Species is a character who was strongly influenced by their upbringing. Career shows how much you paid attention to your training, while skill ranks show much more what you focused on in life.
It's fun to compare a pool of 2d4, 1d6 with a pool of 1d12, 1d4. reliability versus possibility.
And it should be noted that Ironclaw (and their other games using this system) DO take advantage of it's possibilities. they don't waste any of the interesting use cases.
They are great games (Myriad Song is one of my all time favorites) and you should try them if you're given the chance :)
Their games can be bought at Drivethru rpg or Studio2 publishing

Catching up and finally unlocking older content on the side account is letting me revisit the splendor of these maps. Case in point, Bloodstone Fen's lighting. (also me using it to play with some filters but yeah)
