Would You Go Blind For Beauty?
Iris implant surgery was first developed and used in 1996 by a German doctor, and was originally used to correct eye diseases. Its popularity has recently spiked due to its aesthetic use, despite being banned in both Canada and the United States.
Bright Ocular has been at the forefront of this movement, providing ‘flexible, biocompatible, colored medical grade silicone to change the eye colour permanently.’. Nowhere on the website does it mention the risks associated with an iris implant.
Iris implants remain banned in Canada and the United States due to the damage associated. The main issue comes from the implant sitting directly on the iris, this causes rubbing that can deform and damage the pupil. A damaged pupil can lead to blindness and light sensitivity if untreated. If the implant remains on the iris too long it can also cause glaucoma and cataracts.
Even with these deadly side effects this surgery is still available in foreign countries. Proving that some people will do anything to achieve society’s beauty standard.
