Oh my god you guys. Fate tumblr, people who've seen fate, yuri fans, tragedy fans. Go get this fixed. SaberIri can not be at 16.3% right now this is pathetic. I can't believe it -- if Saber and Irisviel lose a maligned yuri bracket, I will cut my leg off.

(VERY LONG POST AHEAD)

For those who don't KNOW:

Irisviel is doomed to a fate that she can't avoid because she is a literal container for spirits and will die at the end of the war. Saber is literally her knight who takes her around the city and protects her and shows her the world she wasn't allowed to see outside of the castle she was raised in.

Saber is King Arthur (already a fucking mess, and definitely traumatized heavily from it too) summoned as a Servant to Kiritsugu, Irisviel's husband, ... who, by the way, is so shocked that King Arthur is a woman that he won't fucking talk to her. SO IRISVIEL HAS TO DO ALL INBETWEEN COMMUNICATION! KIRITSUGU WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE SABER!

Irisviel is literally so happy to be outside of the castle and exploring the world, but as the war-ritual goes on and she absorbs more spirits, her homunculus body begins to break down, and Saber becomes even more fiercely protective as Irisviel becomes weaker and weaker...

... to the point of chasing down and unleashing her deus ex machina attack (a Noble Phantasm) on two people she suspected of kidnapping Irisviel AFTER chasing after them on her (self-magically powered up) motorcycle (Butch)

Irisviel was literally brought up on Kiritsugu, her husband's, ideals, and although she knows that they're hurting him, she still supports him through the war they're fighting because she believes in his naive ideal of a world without evil...

...which, because the container she's created in the image is is CURSED! from the PREVIOUSLY HELD WAR-RITUAL! She turns essentially into a dark version of herself who is cursed with muck and also she turns into a cup to fulfill Kiritsugu's wish to create a world without evil.

Again: she turns into a cup.

... which Kiritsugu, realizing the holy grail (that's the cup) is cursed, orders Saber to destroy it.

which is so funny also because Saber's literally demands to be given the Grail earlier and is canonically going mad because of all the blood she's lost from previous battles + the Grail grants the winner a wish, and Saber desires to undo her mistakes as a King

PLUS: canon or non-canon so much of the promo art for Fate/Zero literally looks like it's out of a lesbian pulp novel cover where a girl steals a man's wife, and more or less that's what Fate/Zero really would've gotten towards if Irisviel hadn't DIED and Saber didn't ALSO GET BRUTALLY BETRAYED BY HER MASTER AND THEN DISAPPEAR!

Hello there everyone. This is me promoting my own fanfiction. It's a Fate/Zero au where Arturia snaps at the end of the Grail War and loses it. Using the power of the Grail she wishes upon it for the chance to build her kingdom anew- along with those she has come to care for and love (Diarmuid & Irisviel). In the end she ends up creating a Psuedo-Singularity, which is noticed by Chaldea so, naturally, Ritsuka & co. are sent to go and fix the timeline. Much drama and angst.

@akampana gets all the credit (and my appreciation) for the design of Diarmuid Alter. Thank you so much for allowing me to borrow it for this fanfic.

50. I’m scared but won’t admit it so you take my hand

Without Avalon, or the magic circle to aid her, it was very difficult to walk. Irisviel stumbled. She didn’t recognize where she was, but it appeared to be a theater.

Saber hurried to her from across the room, sheathing her still-disguised sword. “Are you alright?”

She smiled and righted herself, drawing away from Saber’s offered hand. “Don’t worry about me.” Her throat still hurt and it was painful to talk, but that didn’t really matter anymore.

“We’ll take you back to the base and give you a chance to rest.”

Irisviel shook her head. “I’m afraid it’s too late for that now.”

She hadn’t expected to see either Saber or Kiritsugu again. She hadn’t thought they would manage to get to her while she was still alive. It was a welcome surprise. She wondered at how incredibly lucky she was to be here, with them.

Her husband was somewhere to the back of the room. The confrontation with Kirei Kotomine had been surprisingly brief, with both Saber and Kiritsugu there. And now came the final, dispassionate sound of one last shot, either through the head or the heart. The priest was dead.

Saber frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“No,” said Kiritsugu. She heard his heavy footsteps drawing closer, behind her. He rested a hand on her shoulder and it was bloody. “The Holy Grail war has already ended.”

“But Archer is still a threat, he’s already procured a new Master for himself once before. Resolving that will take time.”

“All the other Masters have fallen.”

Irisviel’s gaze was still trained on Saber, and the confusion on her face slowly giving way to horror. She spoke carefully. “You have won back the vessel for the Holy Grail. I am here; it is time.”

“You—“ but Saber didn’t have time to finish that question.

Irisviel almost didn’t feel the cold press of the gun at her back. Positioned just so, that the bullet would slip through her ribs, and pierce her heart. Kiritsugu’s hand on her shoulder tightened briefly. and she wondered if that was a tremor going through him, but then the gunshot shattered her train of thought.

Saber gasped, reaching out to take her weight as Irisviel slid to the ground. There wasn’t much pain. That was good. They were both on their knees then,

“No,” Saber looked stunned. “What did you do?”

“It had to be done,” her husband said. “I’m sorry Iri.”

“You monster.” Saber bit out.

“Saber, please—“ she began, but choked on the words.

“Are you too cowardly to look at her? Come back here.” Saber still gripped her by the shoulders, and she looked torn between going after him, but she stayed. Irisviel only half heard him walking away.

“Let him be,” she insisted. “This was always the planned outcome, Saber. He is only doing what he must, as have you.”

“There is no honor in this.”

“Don’t be afraid,” she said, taking her hand. “I’m not, I’m playing my part.”

Saber took a deep breath, composing herself. “It is a worthy sacrifice.”

“I was only ever a vessel to protect the grail. I’m lucky to have had this much time, and to have known you.”

She wanted to sit up, to do what she wasn’t sure, maybe to comfort Saber, or just be closer to her. But she felt too weak. Instead, Irisviel closed her eyes.
