My thoughts on X-Men Blue: Origins #1

Marvel just released the special one-shot X-Men Blue: Origins #1 earlier today, and... VICTORY! SWEET VICTORY!

We finally got in-universe confirmation of Chris Claremont's original plans for Nightcrawler's true parentage. Mystique is now officially Nightcrawler's FATHER, while Destiny is his mother!

Additionally, writer Si Spurrier gives Raven an incredibly impassioned speech which only further reinforces Mystique's status as a queer & gender-fluid mutant icon in the Marvel universe! I absolutely love it!

Overall, it was an incredibly solid one-shot issue, and easily ranks up there with some of my other personal all-time favorite Mystique storylines like the Wolverine: Get Mystique arc and X-Men Unlimited #4, "Theories of Relativity"!

Definite kudos!

One thing that is canon in the 616 is the fact that Mystique took Rogue in and raised her as her daughter. The details on this have been vague, we have had different versions of their first meeting and we do not talk about the exact age of characters for various reasons.

Over the years Rogue and Mystique clashed a lot of times. Often depending on how far Mystique was on the villain scale and what twisted goal she was currently after. UXM #177 had her train in Murderworld against X-bots to kill them all, including Rogue herself, just to see if she could do it to get her daughter back. Because she was convinced that Professor Xavier had brainwashed her. Murder as means to an end is part of her charm.

Yet the confrontation in #178 makes it clear that Rogue chose to seek out help from the X-Men. It is her choice. For her own good. Because Mystique could not help her with the lack of control of her powers. But this is very much a mother-daughter conversation. "Mother knows best", well until she doesn't.

The thing I love about that moment from 40+ years ago - one of the earliest close-ups of this family relationship - is that Rogue never denies Mystique that role. She is her mother. And she was there to fight away nightmares. Once upon a time Rogue felt safe and protected. And it's so nice to see how the one-shot from 2023 runs with that. To give us a nice beginning.

"When Ah was a kid -- 'fore Ah developed mah power -- Ah remember you holdin' me, protectin' me from the badness an' nightmares."

Those panels from the Origin story make me believe in all of that. And oh the heartbreak from the moment Rogue's power did manifest and Mystique would no longer hold her like that. Afraid of her own daughter. Exquisite angst that was brushed off too often.

Also shown: Raven draws a gun on Irene. She is ready to shoot anybody, including people she loves. That's established. She does in fact shoot Rogue in the back at one point: in true Mystique fashion though it comes with the "for her own good"-thinking. Because Mystique has a plan that in the end does actually help Rogue. That's the best twisted part of it all. It's very important that from Mystique's POV her love for Rogue as her daughter is never in question. While for Rogue there are some complications in the mix (because Mystique absolutely did use her specifically for her power and pushed her into a life of crime and hate, the usual). So much to unpack and with the different writers going for different angles - often a bit too much abuse and not enough "it's complicated". But I really like putting these two moments - decades and decades apart - together for a little feeling of continuity.

Real talk: if you’re a big and/or strong women’s 125lber, you have to look at the success Mayra Bueno Silva has had at 135lbs and think “I can do that.” 4-0 in the division with 3 finishes and a couple of POTN bonuses.

Like sure, Maycee Barber’s game is still developing but tell me she couldn’t handle the physicality of someone like Irene Aldana or Yana Santos? Like, Tracy Cortez is almost certainly more physically imposing than 95% of the division.

Bishop War College #3 Review

*Spoilers!*

The issue starts with Bishop being brought to this universe’s version of the quiet council. 

We find out Tempo in this universe isn’t a mutant but a human geneticist at Tucker Labs (and that Emma is aghast at her 616 self😱😂)…

Back at Orchis we see Feng…who just looks like a Star Wars General reject from Marvel’s SW line (meh.)

They talk about how terrible an idea it was to hire Fernis (it was a TERRIBLE idea) but that they need them to find “the Pit” on Krakoa.

Apparently brightswill can seep into the ground and permanently effect Krakoa (idk- It kind of reminded me of the mothervine BS from years ago… so I more kind of stopped paying attention honestly…)

Andrea is having a SUPER BAD week…but manages to separate her brother from Amass and Cam.

The info pages continue to be completely useless….

The Rockslide “pretender” protects Surge and the others (UGH! I miss FUN Santo😒)…

Meanwhile, while Bishop is searching for Tempo, AU Destiny warns Bishop something bad will happen in his universe(no shit Irene…!)

(Soooo- How does the recent “X-Force” fit in with “War College” and “X-Men 21”…? Is it BEFORE or AFTER AU land, that Bishop suggested bringing back Scar W? Am I just giving editorial AND writers TOO much credit that anyone has any f****** clue when what book takes place??? I probably am…)

Bishop questions who he would essentially be without strife and war… (apparently pretty boring if AU Bishop is any indication 😂🤣)

Bishop starts screaming at AU Tempo (Writers are REALLY doubling down to make Bishop the “crazy conspiracy theorist” lately…huh?), when suddenly a mutant liberations group bombs the lab.

Review:

Truthfully- I was hoping they would go “the original five/ Civil Rights story”…instead of this. I think it would have been cooler taking essentially the original allegory of writers unable to essentially talk about racism in comic books- to now more or less playing it straight.

This book is a fun race bending of the X-Men…with nothing to really SAY about it….there’s no point to it other than a “Wouldn’t it be cool if all the X-men were black”- truthfully I just kept thinking…I would rather be reading “Static” right now…

Much like the last issue- I started reading it… then set it down to do laundry/get coffee/ect… and just didn’t really feel motivated to go back…

It’s books like these that kind of make me wonder how the HELL Marvel CAN’T justify doing a Gen X REAL reunion book or an Academy X book…?

There’s a million OTHER things I would have liked to see- like even an ALL Black X-Men team up of Bishop, Storm, Prodigy, Tempo, Gentle, Bling! and Synch…than this kind of empty AU? 

I actually think Wrongslide’s appearance really highlights a chronic problem with X-Books; none of characters really have ANY personality anymore.

Seriously Rockslide went from a cool fun character to…a literal soulless blob? 

Like it’s funny to me that a book meant to HIGHLIGHT diversity…has characters that pretty much feel completely devoid of any personality…I mean other THAN kind of Bishop…who really HAS quality characterization in this book??  

Armor and Surge are two vastly DIFFERENT characters…and yet in this book there is little difference between them. They feel like token characters meant to essentially pad the book instead of real people.

Even Bishop- what can you SAY about Bishop as a character other than he has PTSD? What quality moments have we really gotten FOR Lucas?

It’s the SAME with virtually ALL the current  X-books. Storm turning on Xavier and the others doesn’t FEEL like a win because it DOESN’T FEEL like Storm AT ALL (also it makes ZERO sense considering YEARS and years of canon!) 

Laura’s personality is basically growling at things and panels of her eating with her claws anymore.

The Scott/Jean drama just feels really STUPID and makes EVERYONE look horrible….

“Rogue and Gambit” just feel like someone plagiarized a generic sitcom from the 90’s….

Honestly- this is why, anymore, I am more excited about Nocenti/Claremont revisits- because modern X-books just feel lost of any real personality that continually MADE them popular. There’s no point reading these books for the characters…because they all feel TOTALLY interchangeable and kind of boring.

Predictions: 

Knowing X-Men…we’re gonna find out AU land isn’t as great as it seems. 

It’s like contractual that all AU X-Men futures have to be miserable in SOME way (except for OWL verse!)

MMA 2023 champion predictions, lots of hot takes but bare with me here:-

Heavyweight - Francis Ngannou defends against Jones and then leaves the UFC. Gane and Blaydes fight for the vacant belt, Blaydes beats Gane and becomes the champion.

Light Heavyweight - Jamahal beats Glover but then loses to Jîri upon his return.

Middleweight - Adesanya wins the rematch with Pereira, Khamzat moves up to middleweight and beats Adesanya.

Welterweight - Usman beats Edwards in the rematch and then retires, Khamzat doesn't make 170 and moves up, so Belal and Colby fight for the vacant belt, I think Belal wins that fight.

Lightweight - Volk beats Islam and Beneil Dariush.

Featherweight - Volk beats the winner of Yair Vs Emmett and presumably Arnold Allen.

Bantamweight - Sterling loses to Cejudo, Cejudo beats Sean and Merab (I don't know where Chito fits into this unless they do Sean Vs Chito 2 ngl).

Flyweight - Moreno beats Figueiredo and Pantoja finally gets to fight for the belt, I think Moreno beats Pantoja this time around.

Women's Featherweight:-Nunes is alone in this division at this point, I don't see Norma Dumont or Macy Chiasson posing a threat to Nunes.

Women's Bantamweight:-Valentina Vs Nunes 3, I think Nunes wins this one, after Valentina's last performance I'm not too confident in her beating Nunes, Nunes could also fight Ketlen Vieira afterwards but that doesn't feel like a close fight (she definitely lost to Holly), I think Irene Aldana could pose a good threat though.

Women's Flyweight:-Valentina loses her belt to Manon Fiorot, Grasso could challenge afterwards but prove unsuccessful. I think the winner of Santos Vs Blanchfield could challenge for the belt and be champ by the end of this year.

Women's Strawweight:-Whether it'd be Lemos, Xiaonan or Namajunas for the third time, I think Zhang Weili beats all 3.
