Demigod/KIU Béla ref
Before becoming queen, Bélalune was more like a socialite than a royal/political figure(even tho she was next in line). She was getting into mass shenanigans, and made a lot of friends and enemies during this time. Current day/KI:R Bélalune has been doing her best to sanitize her image as queen because of this phase.
Info dumping about this design and my references for it lalalalala🧙‍♂️⚡💥💥⚡💥⚡💥⚡💥⚡💥💥⚡
So when I went about this design I wanted to set it apart from her queen look. That one had cuteness, but was still formal. Extremely symmetrical, mostly muted colors, squared silhouette and all that jazz. It's the outfit equivalent of holding shit in.
So when I started on this I knew I wanted more asymmetry, looseness, bright colors, plus her old wings and tail from before ascending to a goddess.
While I was researching hairstyles I came across some tang dynasty and prior traditions about how girls would wear their hair before they were adults. Usually they'd wear some form of double buns/hair loops. Below is some of the examples via figures from the tang dynasty, which is also the style I used as reference for Béla's hairstyle here. I just made them a little longer to tie into her kingdom being inspired by the jade rabbit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She also has a lil saffron on her hair, which has strong roots in Persian culture as a seasoning, a healing ointment and an offering to royals or gods(both of which apply to her). Nowadays it's a really good seasoning for zereshk pollo(🤤) and other Iranian foods, but it's still known to be a little pricey. Either way it screams wealth and luxury, considering her background. Also I snatched the colors of the flower for the colors in this outfit, with some minor tweaks like making the red stems a hot pink.
Her dress is a mix between the 1760s Brunswick dress and han dynasty quju (with the rounded long sleeves inspired by this tang dynasty figurine and the undershirt inspired by dudou, a type of undergarment)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the ribbons all around her outfit are inspired by both the ones on that Brunswick dress, as well as the Yongle Palace murals in China and rock carvings in Assyrian era Persia(the pic I have is a sketch from a book scan unfortunately not the actual carving :( ). They're a little more simplified here to show that she's still young and inexperienced, and has yet to obtain that level of divinity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope this was a little informative and a passage through my twisted fuckt up evil mind :3

*ISRAEL REALTIME* - "Connecting the World to Israel in Realtime"
🔻ROCKETS from Lebanon - Eilon, Goren, Idmit area.
▪️Egypt to Israel: "Any Israeli move to occupy Philadelphia will lead to a serious and serious threat to Egyptian-Israeli relations and the threats of the organizations and the Gazans, we will not allow this.”  “Egypt is able to defend its interests and sovereignty over its land even with fire and will not be held hostage by a group of extremist Israeli leaders.”
Hamas to the Egyptian mediators: “We welcome the protection of the Palestinian right to the Philadelphia corridor, and the continued assistance to the Palestinian people in Gaza"
(( This is bizarre, as who tells another country they can’t control their side of the border?  I suspect someone’s smuggling business is at risk. ))
▪️Disaster:  As previously reported, 21 hero soldiers fell in battle in Gaza yesterday.  Although it was first announced 10 deaths, and then 21, it is 21 total - not 10 then 21.  Families are being notified, the names of the 10 have been released: Sgt. Maj. (res.) Matan Lazar, 32, Sgt. First Class (res.) Hadar Kapeluk, 23, Sgt. Maj. (res.) Sergey Gontmaher, 37, Sgt. First Class (res.) Elkana Yehuda Sfez, 25, Sgt. First Class (res.) Yoval Lopez, 27, Master Sgt. (res.) Yoav Levi, , Sgt. First Class (res.) Nicholas Berger, 22, Sgt. First Class (res.) Cydrick Garin, 23, Sgt. Maj. (res.) Rafael Elias Mosheyoff, 33, Sgt. Maj. (res.) Barak Haim Ben Valid, 33.  May Hashem avenge their blood!
▪️The US has imposed sanctions on financial entities in the Gaza Strip, on an Iraqi airline and on entities that support the pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, following the fact that they work in sync with the Revolutionary Guards and Iran's Quds Force.  The "Fly Baghdad" company responded to the imposition of sanctions on it by the Americans: “We’ll sue.”
▪️New hostage deal?  (No confirmation of this info) Israel turned to Qatar and there is clear progress after a slight change in Hamas' position. The deal includes 4 stages
1- Release of hostages other than soldiers
2- Cease fire for a long period
3- Tactical withdrawal of the IDF from several areas in the Gaza Strip
4- Release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons, a number agreed upon during the negotiations
Israel is waiting for Qatar's response to the deal presented by Israel.  Israel asked not to publish in order not to create chaos, but this leaked within hours. (We’re sharing after it is already widely published.)
Netanyahu to the families of the kidnapped: the world will demand guarantees, if we stop the war - we will not be able to renew it.
🔶 GAZA-HAMAS Front
▪️A significant achievement for the security system: tonight, forces located a large underground computer room in which much intelligence material was discovered.
▪️IDF blows up buildings in the ‘Egyptian’ neighborhood between Jabalia and Beit Lahia in the northern Strip that were being used for military purposes.
🔶 LEBANON-Hezbollah-Syria Front
▪️ IDF jets carried out 5 attacks on Aitron and an attack on Maroon_al-Ras.
🔶 JUDEA-SAMARIA Front
▪️Overnight counter-terror operations in Bnei Naim, Hebron area.
🔶 RED SEA-Houthis Front
▪️The military spokesman of the Houthis:  We attacked with missiles an American military cargo ship the Ocean Jazz.  US Navy:  The ship was not attacked.
▪️The British-American air force is attacking the district of Radaa in al-Bayda governorate in central Yemen.
▪️Loud explosions are heard in several districts in Sana'a. (Yemen capital). The Al-Dailmi air force base at Sana'a International Airport was attacked.
▪️American, British and other allied forces launched an attack on Houthi sites in Yemen.  The attacks against the Houthi positions targeted missile platforms, suicide drones and weapons caches.

my 2023 favs
i will focus on books because i don't really listen to music much, when i do lately it's a lot of Mina or some ambient/jazz to study. i also happen to forget about the movies i watch lol. The first book i want to mention is "Le italiane si confessano" by Gabriella Parca, a collection of letters that italian women would -almost always- anonymously send to newspapers in the 50s/60s in hope they'd offer them a solution to their sufferings. It's nothing extraordinary per se (considering it's just an assemblage), but i think it's the rawness with which these letters are presented that impressed me. The author is absent, but her intention is loud. She leaves the readers alone with their own personal and inevitable final considerations. You cannot read this and still think Italy is a sane country. I also loved "Maybe Esther" by Katja Petrowskaja, which i read both in german and italian. Katja was born on my same day and -as stupid as that may sound- i felt connected to her through her writing style straight away. I took that as a sign i would love the book (and i did). She took me with her in her search for her family history. it's an intense work that i couldn't stop reading. i've found in her my same pride in knowing i come from a long secuence of admirable people and just like her i continuously keep track of who and where i come from, without rest. My last mention is "The enlightenment of the greengage tree" by Shokoofeh Azar. I loved the touch of magic realism that immediately made me think of an iranian One hundred years of solitude (intent which the book itself confirms between the lines). I could just connect the dots with my hispanic american literature's knowledge and it was so fascinating. Azar introduced me to persian folklore and gave me a better understanding of Iran's history through the desperation of a family that keeps living after its physical death. She succeeded in letting pages and pages of layered and oblique realities (that i usually cannot stand) be light and pleasurable.
i hope you will enjoy these as much as i did, if you ever read. thank you @mstepenwolf for the tag 🖤 mutuals feel free to join

i dobnt know anything about doctor who or musical theory other than how to literally play an instrument but i am LIVING for ur commentary abt the devils chord. if you have time cld you plz explain more about historically inaccurate musical instruments and intervals ?
i mean idk how much i could really cover because my area of knowledge is really mostly the flute but ill give it a shot
the idea that the tritone was banned is a myth, really what happened is the tritone is 1) a difficult interval to sing if you havent heard it enough to audiate it (which medieval people would not have) because its a fairly wide interval and its not commonly used, because 2) medieval composers didnt use dissonances
a key aspect of music theory that people tend to forget is that it describes the general IDEA of what was happening in a specific type of music in a specific time period. like there arent rules until AFTER the fact, mozart wasnt looking at a big list and going okay so i have to make sure there arent parallel fifths and i can only resolve sevenths down etc etc etc, he was just writing what sounded right to him
there is an exception to that and its stuff like. Shostakovich. russian composers in that era werent allowed to write stuff that was too complex or dissonant or "sexual" because of the people in power. also a lot of composers worked off of commissions and stuff, so you write what people will pay you to write
but yeah like when i talk about music theory im talking about western music theory, which is western music. thai music has its own set of characteristics, as does indian music, as does hawaiian music, as does iranian music, as does cameroonian music etc etc etc etc etc.
(theres also a distinction to be made between different styles within a single overarching culture or genre. for example theres classical vs vernacular, which basically that makes the distinction between "high class" and "low class" music. vernacular is the popular everyday stuff such as pop or folk music. But then theres also different styles in each, so taking jazz as an example theres swing, bebop, hard bop, cool jazz, free jazz, 3rd stream, fusion, etc etc etc etc etc etc.)
in terms of the area of knowledge that i am the most acquainted with, well suffice it to say that the western concert c flute has pretty much been the same since 1847 when theobald boehm patented his modern system of keywork (the mechanism for how the keys. well. work). there have only been very negligible changes since then, and even before then as early as the 1820s at least there are similar instruments.
so really youd have to go back quite a ways for me to see a regular modern concert c flute and be like 🤨🤨🤨 Thats Not Historically Accurate. itd have to be late 1700s and earlier for my alarm bells to go off. alternatively, say anything about a concert C piccolo in JP Sousa's military band and i might have to call you on that as well but, you know, thats a little bit more niche

saw some panicking on my dash so let me quickly say: the iranian missile strikes were extremely obviously organized in advance with the cooperation of the israeli government as a matter of optical saber-rattling, which israel was probably super jazzed about because it lets them reframe themselves as victims again and distract from the killed aid workers in record time. the odds of this leading to anything besides more grand proclamations from israels allies are practically zero, and even THAT is looking unlikely, with biden already refusing to support any retaliatory action from israel.

Aboutface ft. Joshua Churchill - زن Zan (Woman) - an ambient ecstatic jazz piece from the Zan, Zendegi, Azadi EP
Zan, Zendegi, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom), initially a Kurdish motto, زن زندگی آزادی has become the chant of current protests in Iran. Women bravely have risked their lives on the streets to fight against patriarchy, harassment, and servitude to a fascist system. The release includes handmade limited edition USB stones with ‘Mahsa' (مهسا) engraved on them in Farsi, alongside a digital mixed media download that includes the music and artworks. This project has been developed and advised with the help of an anonymous collective of individuals in Iran & London. Mahsa Amini is a 22-year-old Iranian of Kurdish origin who had been arrested for allegedly breaching the Islamic dress code for women and she was killed by the Islamic Republic security forces while in custody. This was the catalyst for the mass public protests that continues to be met by regime-led brutality, leading to the deaths of many other young women and girls. The music has been developed from 2017 project Parvata (sanskrit for mountain): a one-take live improvisation using photography hung in the performance space to interpret the ancient hindu myth of Parvati - daughter of the mountains, exploring themes of female empowerment, love, loss, death, re-birth and reunion through perseverance. Profits from the release will be donated to Iran based local initiatives that support the protests and united4mahsa: a non-governmental, non-profit organisation dedicated to informing international audiences about this uprising’s protests, which have spread across 50+ cities in Iran. www.united4mahsa.com. Solidarity and love with all people in Iran resisting and protesting. Zan Zendegi Azadi زن_زندگی_آزادی#  Joshua Churchill: Saxophone. darker: voice. Hi Setia, it's Lio! Do you have any other Iranian songs/artists to recommend? 🫶🏼 I'd love to discover some more!!
hey! how you doing? :D
aw, I'm glad the ones that I recommended have interested you :3
anyways, one of the artists that I absolutely love is Farhad Mehrad! his songs are so soulful, yet they can always make someone cry 😭
these are some of his original songs:
by the way!!! in the early 60s, before he got into writing his own songs in Persian, he used to cover English rock n roll songs and he'd perform them with the band that he was in, The Black Cats. (its videos can be found on youtube - just search "The Black Cats Farhad")
speaking of Black Cats, some of the other members also left this band to start their solo careers - just like Farhad. one of them was Shahram Shabpareh. even though at the start of his career, he was influenced by American artists and his focus was on jazz and/or rock n roll, after he left the Black Cats, his genre changed a lot and since then, he's been known for his disco songs and being an Iranian "one-man Abba" 😄
if you liked his songs, I also recommend another pop singer from the same era: Googoosh. back in the 70s, she was mostly famous for being an actress, but her songs are nice too :)
also, in the 60s, around the time that the Black Cats was formed, there were also some other bands like them that were trying their best to be as great as the American and British artists that they looked up to. these bands (Black Cats, The Rebels, Golden Ring,...) would usually have gigs only in Tehran and Abadan. well, their members were all so young and new to the music industry back then. so, their works didn't have much quality. but one cool thing about them is that they liked to use their own creativity when covering English songs and give an Iranian atmosphere to them. for example, they'd play the songs in 6/8 time which is a common time signature for folk Persian songs; or they'd add some Persian lyrics to the song. however, I personally think that this idea wouldn't work out well sometimes...
here's a playlist of Iranian music of the 60s and in the song "What He Can Do" by The Rebels, you can easily hear how this idea of adding Iranian elements has made the song kinda low-quality. because this combination of pop-rock and folk Iranian doesn't have an Iranian sound anymore 🥴
youtube
umm....that's all for now ig :)) <3

Various Artists — Kuboraum Digital Sound Residency (Kuboraum)
Tumblr media
LABOUR, photo by Evelyn Bencicova
Kuboraum Digital Sound Residency brings together 12 tracks commissioned by the Berlin based spectacle makers Kuboraum who create “masks” for the eyes. They also host musical events by a broad range of electronic and underground artists who share their aesthetic and inclusive philosophy. Kuboraum’s brief to the artists was open ended and what emerges is a snapshot of the music of Berlin’s underground.
Some names are familiar. Space Afrika contributes a typically twilit interlude of sampled vocals swathed in dusty ambience and µ-Ziq a frenetic yet melodic piece of drum’n’bass. “Let Love Decide” from Sandwell District co-founder Regis recalls the halcyon days of clubs like Ego and Tresor when local DJ’s began to incorporate slower bpm’s, live vocals, and post-punk structures into their tracks. Cellist Lucy Railton’s “Medieval Sui” plays a baroque string quartet through a haze of electronic effects, switching moods from the sublime to the haunted.
Still the lesser knowns make this compilation worth hearing. Moin are the London based duo Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead AKA Raime and Italian born percussionist/composer Valentina Magaletti. Their track “Lapsed” creeps along on a two-note guitar figure elaborated over a steady drumbeat and samples of laughter and polyglot mumbling. Magaletti then teams up with Japanese producer Zongamin as V/Z for “All the Rest of It” to explore rhythmic textures that flicker in redlit death jazz shadows. “Mass and Mess, Dispersion of Subjectivity” by LABOUR, Berlin based Iranian soundscapist Farahnaz Hatam and American percussionist Colin Hacklander, splits the difference between Clock DVA and Einstürzende Neubauten (such as they are) into an industrial drum circle with what maybe whale song or distorted factory sirens blaring in the background. On “Impressioni Dinamiche” Italian producer Alessandro Adriani disrupts glacial synths with a basic rock drum sample that counterintuitively emphasizes the dynamics of the keyboards. MC Yallah teams up with Debmaster on the stirring “Nzimba Zinyota,” rapping in languages from Kenya and Uganda over grime beats and eight-bit squiggles.
Although not everything here works, tracks from Emma dj, Quelza and Ziúr feel either slight or overstuffed and the sequencing can be jarring, there’s enough in this anthology to encourage you to dig deeper into the work of the contributors.
