Alcohol Poisonings Rise in Iran as Bootleggers Defy Ban
Tumblr media
When a renowned Iranian artist hosted friends at his apartment in Tehran last month, he served, as he did often, a bottle of homemade aragh, a traditional Iranian vodka distilled from raisins, that he had secured from a trusted dealer. His guests and his partner did not drink that evening, so he raised shot glasses to them and drank alone.Within a few hours, the artist, Khosrow Hassanzadeh, 60, felt his vision blur. By the next morning, his sight was gone, he was delirious and short of breath. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with methanol poisoning from the aragh, according to his partner, Shahrzad Afrashteh.Mr. Hassanzadeh fell into a coma that night and died two weeks later, on July 2. His death, from something as innocuous as having drinks with friends, shocked and infuriated many Iranians who have found ways around the Islamic Republic’s longstanding ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol, which is punishable by a penalty of up to 80 lashes and fines.Rather than stopping drinking, the ban over time has led to a flourishing and dangerous bootleg market. In the past three months, a wave of alcohol poisonings has spread across Iranian towns big and small, with an average of about 10 cases per day of hospitalizations and deaths, according to official tallies in local news reports. The culprit is methanol, found in homemade distilled alcohol and counterfeit brand bottles, apparently circulating widely, according to Iranian media reports and interviews with Iranians who drink, sell and make alcohol. To many Iranians, the deaths are an example of how the Islamic Republic’s religious rules oppress ordinary citizens and meddle in their personal lives.“Khosrow was taken from us because of the lack of social freedoms. It was you who took Khosrow from us,” Nasser Teymourpour, a fellow artist, wrote on Twitter, blaming the government for the alcohol-related deaths.Iran is still reeling from a nearly yearlong uprising against the rule of the Islamic Republic, which erupted after a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, died in the custody of morality police on accusations that she violated a strict religious law requiring women to cover their hair and bodies. Many Iranian women are now defying the hijab rule and appearing in public with their hair showing. After Mr. Hassanzadeh’s death, a collective of artists and writers in exile issued a statement saying that he was, “without a doubt, a victim of religious authoritarianism.” At his funeral, his partner screamed, “Don’t ever forget that they killed him.”“Khosrow spent his entire life trying to preserve in his art certain ideals, rituals and lives of ordinary people in Iran. Drinking aragh is very much part of the socializing culture here,” said his partner, Ms. Afrashteh, in a telephone interview from Tehran, Iran’s capital. “It feels as if he was killed while practicing his own art. Now you can’t even have a drink without fear in Iran.”The clerical rulers who took power after the 1979 revolution, instituting a theocracy, banned the consumption and selling of alcohol in accordance with Islamic rules prohibiting intoxication. Religious minorities are exempt. Over the decades, reports of methanol contaminations occasionally surfaced, but not in the scope and frequency seen in recent months.Even officials are now publicly acknowledging that the problem has escalated. Mehdi Forouzesh, Tehran’s chief coroner, said in a news conference in June that the number of hospitalizations and deaths from methanol poisoning had sharply risen. In only Tehran, he said, it had climbed by 36.8 percent since the beginning of March. From the beginning of May until July 3, at least 309 people had been hospitalized and 31 had died from methanol poisoning, according to Iranian news reports. But the real number is likely much higher because many cases go unreported out of fear of retribution for breaking the law.At least one lawmaker recently called for government action to prevent deaths. Abbas Masjedi Arani, the head of Iran’s Forensic Medicine Organization, said last month that 644 people had died in 2022 from alcohol poisoning, a 30 percent rise from the previous year. Many victims permanently lost their eyesight. The reason for the latest sharp increase in alcohol contaminations remains unclear.“I don’t believe that some dealers have suddenly decided to kill their customers all at the same time,” said an alcohol producer and seller in Tehran who goes by Soheil, defending his trade despite the recent contaminations.“Dealing and making homemade alcohol is already very risky in Iran,” he said. “Nobody wants to harm their clients and their business.” Dealers, if caught, could face jail, with their inventory confiscated or destroyed. The authorities have attributed the increase in poisonings to reasons like the use of industrial-level alcohol in drinks, sloppy production, the greed of producers and a disregard for safety in search of a quick profit. Many Iranians love to drink, and nothing has dissuaded them from a tradition deeply rooted in ancient Persian culture. Homemade alcohol and imported bottles of liquor flow freely at many parties, weddings and social gatherings. Some upscale restaurants secretly serve patrons vodka in pots of tea.“Drinking alcohol has become a form of escape from our difficult circumstances and a way for us to experience some fun,” said Nina, 39, who like many interviewed in Iran asked that her last name not be used for fear of retribution. She said that the crisis of contaminations required proper oversight, but that she had little hope that the government would reverse course. Some Iranians have turned to making their own liquor. Mostafa, 34, said he taught himself how to distill alcohol by watching videos on the internet because he was scared of buying the bootleg kind. He bought machinery for distilling rose water, took over a friend’s empty kitchen and began making aragh. The police have discovered underground distilleries in a veterinary clinic, a roadside shack, a deodorant factory and abandoned warehouses. The business of bottled liquor can involve underground operations that pay scavengers to collect vodka and whiskey bottles from the trash to be filled with bootleg alcohol and sold as imported brand labels, according to interviews and media reports.Experts say it is nearly impossible for an average consumer to detect deadly methanol, which does not smell or taste different from ethanol, in a drink. Home distillation increases the risk of methanol poisoning, they say, if the process is not carefully and properly executed. Some Iranians shrug at the risks and down the shots. Others weigh their choices carefully, opting for one type of alcohol over another. The choices can carry dire consequences. At a New Year’s party in Tabriz, a 49-year-old man named Majid drank whiskey that he thought was imported; within a few minutes, he was screaming in pain, and he died a few days later, according to his family. A man in Shiraz drank homemade aragh and became permanently blind.Mr. Hassanzadeh, the artist, did not trust the bootleg brand bottles and preferred homemade aragh, relying on a dealer he trusted, his partner said. Friends have tried to contact the dealer, but he has not answered his phone. Someone spotted him at Mr. Hassanzadeh’s funeral. Source link Read the full article

Air Pollution and Prevalence of COVID-19 by Elbossaty WF*
Tumblr media
Editorial
There are a number of factors that may pose a great risk in increasing rates of infection of the emerging coronavirus, which first appeared in Wuhan, China. Among the most important of these factors is the weakening of the immune system, as people who suffer from a deficiency in the immune system are more vulnerable to infection with the virus in addition to the high death rate, where the weak immune system fails to address such a wild virus, so it strengthens the virus and activates it until it can control vital systems It leads to failure in the work of the lung and consequently inevitable death. Another reason, which is more common, is the elderly, especially those who suffer from chronic diseases, where their vital organs are weak. They cannot protect the body from the virus, so it can penetrate and activate, and it may lead to death. We find that the common factor between these two factors is air pollution. Air pollution is known as it is the exposure of the atmosphere to chemicals, material particles or biological compounds that cause harm and harm to humans and other living organisms, or lead to damage to the natural environment. Scientific studies have shown that the death rate has doubled due to SARS-CoV-1 infection in places where air pollution is prevalent compared to places with lower rates. The distribution of COVID cases and death illustrate in Figure 1.
By applying this hypothesis to the emerging coronavirus, we find that the high incidence of infection in areas characterized by significant pollution as a result of many industries that result in a lot of exhaust, not only industries that represent a major risk in air pollution, but also where the population relies on burning wood Many exhausts are generated and the chance of air pollution increases, so the infection rate increases. Global studies have shown that there is a relationship between the high death rate in the United States of America and poor air quality, as they have proven that industrial regions suffer from poor air quality due to the spread of particles with the ability to penetrate the lung, respiratory tract infection and chronic heart disease events, which is a major cause of high Death rates in these regions. As is the case in Spain, where the rate of air pollution increases, due to the high percentage of NO2 present in the air, which is produced by car exhaust and has a major impact on the high death rates in Spain.
It is noteworthy that the towns of the Northern provinces (Lombardy and Veneto Emilia Romagna), which are considered the industrial beating heart of Italy, formed the focus of the spread of Covid 19. This is due to the prevalence of P M 10 and P M 2 .5 from the permitted rates and this has a negative impact on poor air quality. Studies have proven that the worsening air pollution crisis in Beijing was due to ignoring harmful emissions from a chemical called "formaldehyde". Formaldehyde or “methanol” is produced from incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials, such as smoke from forest fires, car emissions, and tobacco smoke. Researchers say the study, released jointly by Harvard University of America, Tsinghua University of China and the Harbin Institute of Technology in China, that the main sources of formaldehyde gas emissions in eastern China are vehicles and industrial facilities such as chemical and oil refineries. The team of researchers explained that when sulfur dioxide interacts with formaldehyde, a new compound called "Hydroxyl Sulfonate Methane - (HMS)" is produced; this compound represents the basis of harmful particles formation in the sky of China, which explains the continued pollution of extreme air despite the reduction of dioxide Sulfur.
In Iran, the air pollution rate increases due to the high concentration of PM 2.5 particles in the air, due to the economic activity, especially in fuel and mines. The number of deaths in Iran has increased due to air pollution, especially in industrial areas. Air pollution in the UK has long been considered an important health problem. Many areas including major cities such as London were found significantly and regularly above legal and recommended levels. Air pollution in the UK is one of the main causes of diseases such as asthma, lung disease, stroke, and heart disease. It is estimated that air pollution causes forty thousand premature deaths every year, or about 8.3% of deaths, while it costs about 40 billion pounds each year. And one of the studies showed that those who live in big cities, their ability to breathe is 5% less than others, and linked their cases and pollution rates in their cities. Research has shown that the air in the Kartal, Esenyurt and Fatih areas where air pollution has reached a level that can be called "unhealthy".
He attributed the air pollution to an increase in exhaust smoke, and pollutants coming out of factory chimneys, warning of an increase in respiratory diseases. Scientific reports indicated that Qatar is the second most toxic country in the world due to poor air quality. Saudi is also the second country in the Middle East to have unhealthy air quality. Air pollution is due to the high rate of PM2.5 in the air, which are small molecules that have the ability to penetrate the lung, and hence high rates of asthma, and may be a major cause of high death rates. This is the case in the rest of the Gulf States and Cairo, where pollution rates increase as a result of traffic congestion and factories and burning fuel. Saint-Pierre and Miquelon's is one of the least air polluted countries. This is reflected in the number of people infected with the virus, as it is the lowest country in the number of infection with the virus, due to the nature of life in it and the distance from the sources of industrial costs. Saint-Pierre and Miquelon's health care system is entirely public and free. The inhabitants have traditionally earned their livelihood by fishing and by servicing the fishing fleets operating off the coast of Newfoundland. From the above we conclude that there is a relationship between infection with the virus and air pollution, and it seems that the relationship is indirect, as air pollution affects the vital organs of the body, causing them to fail, and thus be more susceptible to infection with the virus, and from there is a high death rate.

Week 7 Public Health Campaigns & Communities
What is Public Health?
Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This is accomplished by promoting healthy lifestyles, research into illness and injury prevention, and detection, prevention, and response to infectious diseases. Overall, public health is concerned with the well-being of whole communities. These populations can range from as tiny as a small neighbourhood to as large as an entire country or part of the planet. (CDC Foundation, 2021)
Tumblr media
How is fake information on COVID-19 spreading by using social media in Malaysia?
According to Ngadiron, Abd Aziz and Mohamed, a study conducted by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (ISIS), 70 percent of the 363 false news stories about government action are about Covid-19 and the spread of viruses in the community. In addition, the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified 18 individuals in 43 incidents of distributing misleading information on Covid-19. According to SKMM's announcement, six people have already been charged in court. According to the statement, the MCMC and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) are collaborating through the Cyber Crime Committee to combat the ongoing distribution of fake news, particularly concerning Covid-19, which may be misleading and cause dispute among netizens.
Tumblr media
How fake information on COVID-19 spreading can affect society?
According to research published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, around 5,800 persons were hospitalised due to misleading information on social media. Many people died as a result of consuming methanol or cleaning chemicals containing alcohol. People mistakenly assume that the goods are a cure for the infection. However, the actual total may never be known because data from Iran, where many alleged methanol poisoning deaths occurred, is impossible to verify (Coleman, 2020).
Many of the patients had followed recommendations that seemed like reliable medical advice, such as eating a lot of garlic or taking a lot of vitamins, to avoid infection. Others drank things like cow urine. According to the experts, all of these activities had "potentially serious implications" for their health (Coleman, 2020).
Tumblr media
Another result is that society is biased and enjoys blaming others. Because Covid-19 developed in Wuhan, China, anti-Asian sentiment exploded. Individuals might make illogical decisions when they are acting on confused and confusing emotions. Some people are already biassed, and this scenario will exacerbate their stereotyped attitudes. This can result in the use of hate speech, instigation, or violence against any group seen to be the "carrier" of the pandemic, such as blaming Chinese, Tabligh groups, migrants, and refugees. This circumstance has the potential to sever relationships between multiracial and religious communities. Unbeknownst to them, the act of disseminating fake news and acting on it might lead to tyranny (Ngadiron, Abd Aziz and Mohamed, 2021)
In conclusion, although social media is a useful tool to spread the news or convince people to protect themselves from COVID-19. People should not trust everything from social media.
