Changes to the internet and US Monopoly lead by the BRICS Nations
https://www.rt.com/politics/official-word/319553-brics-internet-us-monopoly/
This meeting went unnoticed but some in the tech community have taken note and interest about the potential changes to the IT world it might lead to.  First of all it appears to be the first meeting between BRICS nations dealing with technology and starts the framework for changes in the global IT market and control of the internet.
ICANN Domain & IP Monopoly
ICANN was mentioned in the meeting as being an issue because it is a legal US entity.  The BRICS nations would like this to shift to a NGO and/or a multi-state approach to keep things more neutral.
It is also responsible for the top-level distribution of IPs which also pose a neutrality issue.  And when we start talking about the private NICs that delegate directly to companies like us (eg. ARIN,APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC, RIPE) we have a similar issue.
Security and Spying
There was also talk of the Snowden leaks showing the danger of a single stakeholder having so much control of the internet and also with it being detrimental for security of other nations.
Economic Impact
The meeting also discussed the benefits of a non-monopolistic approach as having economic benefits for the whole world and the potential to provide more innovation and IT products/services.  What excites us is that they pledged to work with non-BRICS nations as well so this could be interesting for the IT market on a worldwide scale.
IP Transit
What we found exciting is that there was talk of using the BRICS finance (bank) to finance a new and direct global network between BRICS nations.  This would speed up connectivity to much of the world and eliminate the bottleneck of most traffic traveling through the US, UK and other EU nations to reach the rest of the world.
This also would create huge opportunity globally and possibly reduce the cost of overseas IP transit, something which cripples or makes data exchange in many parts of the world too costly except for the largest entities.

The term IP transit means transferring the network traffic of a small ISP to the rest of the net.
