When I cut limes into quarters, I think of my father, as he did the same para la cena, parting them until they were a string of slices: green boats in a line. He kept his corn tortillas under his plate, to retain warmth, taking one at a time, rubbing the juice from the limes on them, sprinkling them with salt and rolling them up tight, his brown hand quick across the top. When I cut limes into quarters, I never slice them all the way through, just to have a string of limones. I remember how my father would call for my mother, and how she would answer back, "¿Mande usted?" Y cuando pienso de eso -- de limones y los manos de mi papi y mami -- I think of the consideration given to the preparation of food and the time spent at the table, splitting limones, rolling tortillas, after a day of long work: love given in action.
