[ad_1] Pant played an unwanted shot to gift his wicket away. (PC: Debasis Sen) This is the way Rishabh Pant plays. âToota hai Gabba ka ghamand, jeet gayi hai muqabla Bharat!â âIndia incredible! Rishabh Pant is the star!â For us, it has just been about four years. For Rishabh Pant, it has been more than a lifetime. Picked ahead of Wriddhiman Saha for the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia after the first Test of the 2020-21 series, Pant turned out to be a revelation. With the Kohli-Shastri duo rooting for five frontline bowlers in SENA countries, India desperately needed an extra specialist batter in the top six, who could also keep. Yes, read that sentence twice. Pant was picked. And boy, did he turn things around! His swashbuckling, fearless approach, mindset and intent paved the way for some astonishing Indian wins and comebacks. Take a Test match for example. England versus India at Birmingham, 2022. India staring down the barrel at 98-5. In walks Pant. Smashes 146 off 111 balls with 19 fours and four sixes. In the recent past, Pantâs life has been absolute cinema. Nearly fatal car accident, shaking hands with death and coming back, integral part of Indiaâs T20 world cup winning squad, purchased for a whopping Rs 27 crore by Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL mega auction. Amidst all these, his form slumped. Pant tried defending, it did not work. He tried hitting, it did not work either. The audacious, outrageous shots were just not working anymore. But one thing every cricket expert was certain of. Pant had his cricketing brains in the right place. He was most certainly a leadership candidate for India going forward. Pant will remember 28th December, 2024, for a long time. Fourth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Series tied at 1-1. Third day of the Boxing Day Test at MCG. Pant and Ravindra Jadeja beginning the day with Indiaâs top order back in the hut on the previous day. Clearly, the onus was on both of them. And rightly so. They have been among Indiaâs best red-ball batter overseas of late. Pant began steadily, hitting a few boundaries and playing his aggressive brand of cricket with a sense of caution. All this, until Scott Boland came on to bowl. For some odd reason, with India reeling at 191-5, Pant decided to play the lap shot. It looks bizarre the way he plays it. Of course, if you are a cricket purist. If you are a cricket fan, itâs great fun to watch. Pant defies every rulebook of Test cricket. On this day, however, he tried to defy commonsense. And it did not come off. He had given an indication of what he was going to do. He missed the lap shot, got hit on the body. He backed himself for that shot one more time the very next ball. Except, probably, he forgot to notice or did not even realise that there were three fielders placed in the deep exactly for that attempt. The Aussies had learnt their lessons and come well prepared. There were some other factors as well. The Test was just two days old. Australia had piled up 474 in the first innings. You needed to play out time, you needed to tire the pace attack. And most importantly, as the Aussie batters showed, once you got in, this MCG pitch was a paradise for batters. Who are the batters to follow? Three-Test old Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar who has played seven. If India win this Test, they get to retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy for the third time in a row against Australia in Australia. But then, âthatâs how Pant plays.â He played that shot, mistimed it and Nathan Lyon did the rest. Sunil Gavaskar reacted sharply in the commentary box with a barrage of words starting with âstupid, stupid, stupidâ and you wouldnât blame him. You play for your country, not for yourself. If this is how Pant plays, then his approach needs to change according to the match situation and the teamâs needs. The team management needs to have a stern word with him. If his team needs him to defend, he has to defend. If his team gives him the license to play his natural game, he needs to take the onus, the responsibility.
After all, Pant has great cricketing brains, he might lead the side one day, according to some cricket experts. âRishabh Pant plays like Rishabh Pantâ cannot be the explanation anymore. As simple as that. With this Indian Test team in transition, they need experienced players like Pant to stand up. And for that, Gabba ke saath saath Rishabh Pant ka ghamand tootna bhi zaruri hai. Excitement rises with World Cup set to begin in US
by Rex Clementine
There have been many attempts by the International Cricket Council to take cricket to the United States but with little success. This time staging of the T-20 World Cup in the US is expected to end the deadlock. While authorities have noticed the immense potential cricket has in the US due to the eyeballs that watch the games on television thanks to the large south Asian population, Â thereâs massive commercial potential as well. The only thing now that needs to be done is to get the locals play the game. This hopefully will be a small step forward in a promising road ahead.
A total of 20 teams will compete in the month long competition with three US venues hosting games â New York, Dallas and Florida while six West Indies grounds are chosen for the competition. The two semi-finals will be worked off at Guyana and Trinidad followed by the grand final in Barbados.
England are the defending champions having won the title in 2022 in Australia beating Pakistan in a closely fought final. Their white ball side has suffered some setbacks since then but they will be keen to prove a point.
New Zealand have been very consistent in ICC events in recent years but they have had little luck going their way in knockout games or finals. Theyâve got all bases covered and will be a team to watch during the tournament.
India are coming into the competition under tremendous pressure having not won an ICC event since 2011. When they hosted the 50 over World Cup last year, they cruised through to the finals without losing a game but in the final they stumbled breaking the hearts of one billion fans. Winning ten games in a row in the tournament but failing in the big one was a bitter pill to swallow. They have backed a few ageing players to deliver the goods and no team can boast of the experience that India has. Â
Pakistan have been unpredictable always and you never know what they will offer. Their bowling looks formidable but their batting remains fragile while fielding could hurt them.
Australia have made some bold decisions. Pat Cummins would be a welcome leader for any team in the world but the Aussies have opted for Mitchell Marsh as their new captain for the T-20 side. Similarly, Steve Smith could walk into any side but Australia have left him out. It will be interesting to see how they go in the tournament.
Several South African players have had brilliant stints in the IPL this season. They surely will replicate that form during the World Cup but it is those crunch moments that they fail miserably choking not able to handle the pressure.
Temas like Sri Lanka and West Indies were once a strong force in world cricket but they do not have the same impact anymore. A semi-final slot will be a bonus for either team.
With the tournament increased to 20 teams, thereâs a chance to accommodate several new teams and it remains to be seen how sides like Uganda and Papua New Guinea will fare.

RR vs KKR: IPL 2024 Expected Lineup, Live Toss, 100% Prediction & Which Team Will Win?
Match Preview
This coming Sunday, match number 70 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. The event will feature the Rajasthan Royals (RR) competing against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
After securing a spot in the playoffs with 16 points, the Royals have begun to struggle at the business end of the campaign, as they have lost four matches in a row. On the other side, KKR (19 points) have already secured a top spot in the standings after a washout against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad in the previous round earned them one point. This has allowed them to secure their position as the top team on the table.
Â
RR vs KKR: Pitch Report
Barsapara Cricket Stadium
This is the thirteenth venue of the season, marking the highest number in an Indian Premier League season. With side limits of 63 metres and 60 metres and a straight boundary measuring 73 metres, this location has historically been a relatively high-scoring event. The pitch that we are playing on is made of black earth, and it is hard and rolls really well. "Certainly a surface on which a great number of runs can be scored," Deep Dasgupta and WV Raman remarked before the match between RR and PBKS, which was the last match ever played at the stadium and also the first match ever played there.
In spite of the fact that the pitch has a few fractures, it normally plays far better than it seems to. In the previous year, the team that batted first won both of these games. However, in a match between India and Australia that took place at this venue, Australia chased a massive score of 222 in the last over. This is something that teams want to accomplish because, while they are pursuing it, they are under pressure. They continued by saying, "There are a lot of runs to be had here, regardless of when you bat on the pitch."
RR chose to bat first in the match, and they ended up scoring 144/9 in 20 overs (overs). It was the pacers of PBKS who took six wickets, while the pacers themselves took two wickets. In response, Punjab was able to knock down the goal in 18.5 overs, losing five wickets in the process. There were three wickets taken by RR pacers. During the last five Twenty20 matches, the average total score has been 182 runs. Over the last five years, teams that won the toss have chosen to bowl first 61 percent of the time.

Jos Buttler helps Rajasthan to remain unbeaten
On Saturday, the Rajasthan Royals defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six wickets thanks to an unbeaten century from Jos Butler, who eclipsed Virat Kohli's opening IPL century (6).
In his 100th IPL encounter, Butler got his century off 58 balls with a six when Rajasthan needed one to win their pursuit of 184, with five balls remaining in the Jaipur match.
After scoring 35 runs in his previous three games, Butler found his form. He and captain Sanju Samson put up 148 runs for the second wicket, with Samson making 69.
Butler spoke of his winning smash over the deep mid-wicket fence, "Had a little bit of luck, did not time it well, just got over the rope, delighted with the win."
No matter how long you've spent playing the game, those tensions and worries persist. The mind is a powerful tool; all you need to do is persevere, work hard, and sometimes good fortune will find you.
Earlier, Kohli scored an undefeated 113 to lead Bengaluru to 183-3 after reaching his ninth IPL century in 67 balls, the highest by any batter.
However, his efforts were in vain as the first-time winners, Rajasthan, secured the top spot in the 10-team table with four wins, keeping them undefeated throughout the season, ahead of second-placed Kolkata Knight Riders, who have won three games in a row.
After getting off to a poor start, Butlerâwho, along with Chris Gayle, now has six tons in the IPLâblasted Mayank Dagar for three fours and a six in a 20-run sixth over, setting up the chase.
After Buttler came in to replace Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was out on the second ball of the innings, Samson also assumed responsibility for the opposition's assault.
At their home stadium, Samson and Butler captivated the audience with their beautiful strokeplay, hitting 16 fours and five sixes between them.
After Samson left, Rajasthan faltered a little and lost two more wickets, but Butler and Shimron Hetmyer, who scored 11 off six, held strong.
After reaching the three-figure mark with a single off Nandre Burger, Kohli, 35, hit his first century of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League. He then removed his helmet and lifted his bat in front of the applauding audience.
"I want to keep the bowler guessing; I don't want to be too aggressive." They want me to leave quickly and hard," Kohli remarked.
It just takes maturity and experience. I prepare the game and play the conditions.
As he and captain Faf du Plessis put on an opening stand of 125 runs, with the latter hitting 44, to create the groundwork for the total, Kohli struck his third fifty-plus score of the season.
With a six off 39 balls, Kohli scored his half-century by smashing Riyan Parag below the belt.
Yuzvendra Chahal gave a catch to long-on and Du Plessis fell. To check the surge, Burger shortly bowled Glenn Maxwell for one.
Throughout his 72-ball innings, which included three fours in the last over, Kohli remained resolute and responded with four sixes.
With 316 runs in five games, the former captain of India solidified his place atop the batting table this year.
With Bengaluru, Kohli is still searching for his first IPL victory.

[ad_1] One of the most famous sports franchises in the world, Royal Challengers Bangalore are yet to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) title. For 16 seasons in a row, the franchise hasn't been able to get its hands on the trophy despite possessing one of the finest squads in the league in most seasons. Yuzvendra Chahal, a player who spent 8 seasons with the franchise, was asked the perennial question 'Why RCB doesn't win the IPL title?' Chahal, trying to find the answer himself, gave an honest response."I've been trying to find answer to that question for 8 years," said Chahal in a chat on The Ranveer Show. The leg-spinner, who left RCB after the 2021 season, recalled the 2016 campaign where the franchise came the closest to winning the title, but lost the final to Sunrisers Hyderabad."In 2016, we had the best chance as we had Chris Gayle and KL Rahul. We lost the final. We won 6 of the 7 games at last. I got my first purple cap in the Qualifier match against Delhi, just for two days. The equation was that if we lost, we'll be out of top 4 and if we won, we'll finish second."We won the match and went on to the final. We were playing at Chinnaswamy but lost the match by 8-10 runs. That hurt," said the veteran spinner. When asked about the kinds of conversations that take place after unsuccessful seasons, he says there are always talks about what different can be done next season. But, if the team loses having played good cricket, it doesn't hurt as much."We do talk about what different we can do next year. When you lose after playing good cricket, it doesn't hurt as bad. One thing is losing after trying, the other is losing since the beginning."Once, we lost 6 matches on the trot, when we won the 7th match, we celebrated as if we won the title. Cricket also shows you these pictures. This time, Rajasthan was the best team and we couldn't even qualify. The things that are not in our hand, we don't think about that a lot," revealed the leg-spinner.Topics mentioned in this article [ad_2] Source link

The Ultimate Test
There is a quote displayed in bold letters in the Philippe Chatrier Court at the French Open 'Victory Belongs To The Most Tenacious'. This was amply demonstrated on Sunday when the tenacious and arguably greatest ever player Novak Djokovic won a record breaking 23rd Grand Slam title. Unfortunately there was little tenacity or fighting spirit in evidence a few hours earlier at the Oval, as India capitulated to a 209 run defeat to Australia. The match never really lived up to its billing as the 'Ultimate test'. The large Indian contingent at the ground must have felt really let down at the manner of defeat. There were a few embers of hope burning in the minds of fans when Kohli and Rahane resumed batting after a confident 71 run stand. However from the time Kohli fell to an expansive drive outside the off stump, it was clear that visions of another famous win in the manner of Brisbane 2021 were overly optimistic. Thereafter wickets feel in quick succession with no resistance displayed. Gavaskar did not hide his disappointment at India's performance, after all he was part of the team that successfully chased a 400 + target at Port of Spain in 1976. One also recalls Gavaskar's magnificent 221 in 1979 at the same Oval ground, as India fell agonising short by 9 runs chasing a mammoth 438 with the match ending in a draw. Unfortunately there were no such heroics this time. India failed to take advantage of the subcontinental weather, and a true wicket which aided both batting and bowling in equal measure. The decision to bat first appeared wrong in hindsight, especially based on how Head and Smith attacked the bowling on the 1st day. Why the world's number 1 bowler in rankings Ashwin was dropped for the 6th test in a row in England is inexplicable and extremely unfair to a modern day legend who must be wondering what more he needs to do to be picked consistently overseas. It is ironic that England have recalled Moin Ali who has not played any red ball cricket in a while for want of better spin options, whereas someone like Ashwin with 474 wickets to his credit is often left cooling his heals. Even if the match result might not have changed, there is no doubt that Ashwin's inclusion would have made the Indian attack far more potent. Ashwin would also make a great captain and we wish that like Kumble he gets a chance to lead the team prior to retirement.
Rahane transferred his IPL form to test cricket and should be given credit along with Jadeja and Shardul for keeping India in the game after everything seemed lost during the 1st innings. Australia were truly deserving winners and look in great shape for the Ashes. Boland was the stand out bowler and his style is tailor-made for English conditions. Head and Smith look set to torment the English bowlers throughout the summer. Green and Carey add great depth to the team.
As we look forward to the new ICC test cycle, the Indian selectors must blood some youngsters during the West Indies tour against relatively weak opposition. Good performances in the Ranji trophy should be rewarded and young players suited for test cricket should be identified early and given the right opportunities. The health of test cricket depends to a large extent on India doing well and therefore one hopes that the longer form of the game is given due importance by the BCCI. Whatever be the attractions of the T20 leagues, there is nothing more satisfying than watching a good test match, which will always be the pinnacle of the game.

IPL 2023: Padikkal, Jaiswal star as RR keep slim playoff hopes alive; PBKS eliminated with defeat
Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal starred with the bat as Rajasthan Royals knocked Punjab Kings out of IPL 2023 on Friday. The nail-biting four-wicket win in Dharamsala gave Rajasthan a glimmer of hope of qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition although their fate depends on other matches this weekend.Sam Curran, who cost Punjab a hefty $2.23 million, fell one run short of what would have been only his second 50 of the tournament as Punjab put on 187-5 with Navdeep Saini taking 3-40 for Rajasthan. The innings started with yet another first-over wicket for Trent Boult and PBKS lost four wickets in the first seven overs. But a stellar finish led by Curran and Shahrukh Khan saw PBKS plunder 46 runs from the last two balls, including a 28-run 19th over by Yuzvendra Chahal. In reply for the Royals, Curranâs England teammate Jos Buttler fell for his latest duck of his lacklustre back-end of the season, caught leg-before to a vicious inswinger by Kagiso Rabada. It was Buttlerâs third duck in a row after he had scored a 95 against SRH, nearly equalling the IPL record for most centuries. That was eventually done by Virat Kohli on Thursday, as he got to his sixth...Read more Read the full article
