Nikhil had been trying to find different things to occupy his free time now that cricket season in America was coming to a close. He’d be off to Dubai soon for the IPL Mega Auction but that wasn’t for a few months and so he was essentially on a very extended break which wasn’t fun. That was pretty much how he found himself at a clothing store, walking into the fitting rooms with a pile of clothes that he kept trying on one after the other. He’d had a personal shopper with him, a perk of having a stylist on his payroll and so she was the one who’d find the clothes and ensure he tried them all on. He’d just stepped out in a denim shirt when she pushed a blazer over his shoulders. “Nah I don’t like this,” he’d been about to turn to her when another woman came into view and so he spoke up. “excuse me—what do you think? Does this go…at all?” His expression told her how badly he needed her to say no so he just hoped she caught on.

Reviewing the IPL Performances of Highly Paid Australian Players Over the Years
The recent IPL auction in 2024 made history, breaking the ₹20 crore mark for the first time in league history. Two Australian players, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, were sold at record prices, with Cummins going to SunRisers Hyderabad for ₹20.50 crore and Starc acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹24.75 crore. Despite their global cricket achievements, both players have faced criticism in…

Mike Hesson talks about why RCB selected Faf at the mega auction:
One of the biggest decisions of your tenure was identifying a replacement for Virat Kohli, when he stepped down as captain after the 2021 season. How did you settle on Faf du Plessis?
Virat's a very hard man to replace - and to be captain when your ex-captain is still there is incredibly difficult. You've got to be quite a strong character and really have the changing room [on your side]. You can't be a developing captain. We thought we had to have an established captain with a lot of those core experiences.
We'd spent a lot of time looking at all the gaps that we had in our squad. We looked at Indian players as well, and we went pretty hard for one or two. We settled relatively late on Faf, but we thought he ticked a lot of our boxes: he was highly experienced and still a high-quality player. We never knew at that time whether we'd be able to get a full three-year cycle out of somebody at that age [37, at the time of the mega auction], but the fact that he's incredibly fit gave us a lot more confidence.
He was almost a "plug and play". He knew Virat and [Glenn] Maxwell very well; they had a great relationship. He had a reputation for working equally well with overseas and domestic players, which is critical - to have an overseas player that comes in [as captain] and doesn't have that empathy towards how a team works could have been a disaster. The more we talked to people about Faf, the more he was our target.

Been meaning to talk about this for a few days, but holy fuck, what a week for women's sport.
(Before we get started: INR 1 lakh is about £1,000. INR 1 crore is about £100,000)
The Board of Control for Cricket in India have finally got behind the growth in women's cricket and are launching the inaugural Women's Indian Premier League this year and the player's auction was held last Monday.
The 5 franchises were each given a salary cap of about £1.6m to build a squad of 15-18 players by buidding for their services. So £8m to be spread among around 90 players.
Reserve prices began at 10 lakh rupees and were capped at 50 and while some players didn't generate much interest (for example, Royal Challengers Bangalore got a big bargain by securing the Australian bowler, Megan Schutt at her reserve price of 40 lakh, and Alyssa Healy only went for 70 lakh) a few made bank.
Mandhana cost RCB 28% of their cap. No other player in either the men's or women's IPL takes up as much of their team's cap as her. It's also nearly 7 times the value of her central contract with the BCCI to play for India and vastly more than the £30k she gets playing in the gimmicky Hundred tournament in England.
It's a fresh tournament and the teams need stars to act as faces of the franchise. And so, in places they've mirrored the men's game. Mandhana, India's best batter and who wears 18, joined RCB, whose men's team have Virat Kohli, who also wears 18. (They also signed Ellyse Perry for 1.7 crore and the destructive Richa Ghosh for 1.9 crore). Harmanpreet Kaur, India's captain, got 1.8 crore from Mumbai, whose men's team feature Rohit Sharma, who is also India's captain.
These prices are for a tournament that begins on March 4 and ends on March 26. Three weeks. 8 to 10 games. Pro-rata, the top women are getting paid like footballers (and even those whose salaries are counted in lakh are getting healthy paydays).
This tournament will be successful. The BCCI wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't going to be. And it will grow. Lots of talented foreign players fell victim to squad building restrictions and went unsold. The league will expand. Maybe to 6 teams, before eventually ending up with 8.
All that's holding it back is how quickly talented Indian players are identified and their skills develop. The cash the BCCI generate from this will supercharge that search. The top players already have access to top coaches and training facilities, but for some, the 10 or 20 lakh they get from this tournament will help them build a future and lifestyle as professional cricketers and generate opportunities for others, which in turn will allow the BCCI to expand the tournament.
Within 10 years, I'd be surprised if the WIPL isn't the biggest women's sports league on the planet.

[ad_1] Scene from 2024 IPL Mini Auction (Image: IPL) Is there a method to the madness or is the auction a world in itself, which is governed by its own laws and rules, where every plan and strategy is shunned after a while? Do the franchises go by hope and expect that they will be lucky or is there logic behind every buy? Are some of the buys justified? In an auction can there ever be a pattern to the spending? Finally, have the owners moved away from being emotional with their buys and learnt to take hard business calls keeping in mind the huge spends associated with the tournament? In sum, every auction is a day of madness which throws up some strange bids and some baffling decision-making, but in the end there is a tad of emotion as well. For example, when Cheteshwar Pujara was picked by Chennai Super Kings it showed there is more to the IPL than simple demand and supply and that’s why we continue to celebrate this tournament in the manner that we do. How do franchises approach an auction? “We come in with a very conscious strategy,” said Venky Mysore, the CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders. “We want to add particular skillsets to the side and not simply go by names. Team balance is the key and that’s what we will aim to do again at the forthcoming auction.” This auction will be like no other. A mega auction of this scale hasn’t happened and with two new teams adding to the spectacle (this is their first proper mega auction), it has got cricket fans from across the world to talk about it. Interestingly, every franchise owner you speak to at the end of it, all will tell you the very same thing. Each one of them is happy with their buys and each one of them feel they have done the best. Yet, at least two of them will end up ninth and tenth and will have a disastrous season. Also Read: Lessons for sports journalists from Trump’s presidential campaign Also, the auction build-up has yet again proved that the IPL continues to be robust as a brand and continues to surprise one and all. To see the amount of money spent is startling to say the least. Indian cricket, or more specifically the IPL, can face any crisis head-on. Getting to the auction itself, we could see some of cricket’s best brains masterminding it for some of the franchises. If it is MS Dhoni for CSK, it will be Zaheer Khan for Lucknow Super Giants. That’s the best part of an auction. Not every buy will go the way a franchise wants. With 10 teams now in the fray, that’s more the norm rather than being an aberration. How do you keep nerve in such a situation? How hard is it for a franchise to back off when you know the need is serious? You want a player but you are also conscious that your kitty is fast getting depleted. Does panic set in? Do you then get desperate and make a mistake? How do you deal with a situation like this when one more raise of the paddle could decide the team balance? At the end of the auction, some buys will continue to baffle. But that’s the point of it all. It is not simply logic that determines things. Timing and need, demand and supply, are key issues at an auction and this one will be no different. Each team will end up with match-winners in their ranks and then it will be all about which team plays the best. You can only do that much at the table. The final act is always on the 22 yards and that is where things will eventually get decided. So the jury will always be out.
