Cal To Play UNLV In LA Bowl
Bears vs Rebels Will Kick Off at 6pm PT Dec 18
The California football team has accepted an invitation to play in the LA Bowl (formerly known as the "Jimmy Kimmel Bowl" - we refuse to mention Gronk) on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The Golden Bears will meet 24th ranked UNLV (10-3), the Mountain West Conference runner-up. The game will air on ESPN and begins at 6 pm PT.
"We appreciate the opportunity to play another game together this season and would like to thank the LA Bowl for selecting us," Coach Justin Wilcox said. "Playing in a bowl game is a reward for hard work throughout the season and we are excited to play in front of our Cal Family in Southern California."
Cal will play in a second consecutive bowl game for the first time since 2018-19 after participating in the Independence Bowl last season. The Bears defeated Illinois in the Redbox Bowl in 2019 and played in the Cheez-It Bowl in 2018. The LA Bowl will mark the fourth Coach Wilcox has led Cal to a bowl game, and it's the 26th bowl appearance in program history. The Bears are 12-12-1 all-time in bowl games.
The Bears and Rebels have faced off just once before on the football field, with Cal beating UNLV 20-14 on Sept. 10, 2022, in Berkeley.

2021 Top Games of the Week: Week 1
Tumblr media
Football is back! Week 0 was incredibly boring but Week 1 should more than make up for that. We’ve got a load of interesting games this week that should kick off the season in style. Let’s have a look!
The Top Ten Games of the Week
10. West Virginia at Maryland (Saturday 9/4)
The 10 spot goes to one of the fun rivalry games once again kicking off. West Virginia and Maryland have kept their non-conference rivalry going even as both schools changed conferences in the past 10 years. I hope they keep playing it moving forward. Neither team is expected to contend for their conference, or division in the Terrapins’ case, so winning the rivalry games is #1 on the list for many fans on both sides.
9. Michigan State at Northwestern (Friday 9/3)
The Big Ten is trotting out several conference games to open the season. Michigan State at Northwestern is perhaps the least interesting, but it does feature the defending champions of the West Division. In 2020, the Wildcats came out of nowhere last year to claim their second division title in three years. Meanwhile, the Spartans gutted their way through a season that would have been incredibly disappointing if not for their win over Michigan. Both squads have question marks but with this early conference game we’ll get a better idea where each team stands.
8. #4 Ohio State at Minnesota (Thursday 9/2)
Ohio State is ready to kick off another season with a national championship in their sights. The Buckeyes are quite clearly one of the best teams in the country and expect to go 12-0 or 11-1 at the very worst. Minnesota hasn’t had an opportunity like this is a while. The Gophers are expected to be loaded for bear as they prepare to take the next step forward under P.J. Fleck. Back in 2019, Minnesota defeated #4 Penn State to catapult themselves into a tie with Wisconsin for the West title. I’m sure they have a similar outcome on their minds here for OSU.
7. #16 LSU at UCLA 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/4)
This one is going to hold my attention this weekend. LSU has had a strange two years, going from national champions with potentially the best football team of all time to 5-5 also rans nearly overnight. Sure, they have had time to reload now and the Tigers should be fine, but more than a few eyebrows have been raised already. Meanwhile, UCLA’s long rebuild under Chip Kelly has finally started to bear fruit. The Bruins mauled an overmatched Hawaii squad in week 0. Big deal, the Rainbow Warriors aren’t on the same level as Louisiana State, who will give UCLA a real litmus test to see how far they’ve come. Also it’s cool to see a PAC-SEC matchup, I feel like those conferences have the most infrequent combinations of matchups among the P5 leagues.
6. #10 North Carolina at Virginia Tech (Friday 9/3)
The ACC isn’t quite matching the Big Ten for Week 1 intrigue, but this early bout may have big ramifications on the Coastal race. North Carolina is favored in a race with Miami according to the experts, but things rarely ever go right in this strange division. Virginia Tech are in an awkward position. Things haven’t been going well in Blacksburg lately and fans wanted Justin Fuente fired years ago at this point. It would be a huge opportunity for the Hokies to turn their fortunes around if they can jump on the Tar Heels at home.
5. #23 Louisiana at #21 Texas (Saturday 9/4)
This is a trap game for sure. Steve Sarkisian’s first game as Texas head coach and it’s against a team that made their name last year upsetting regular season Big 12 Champions Iowa State. Louisiana will absolutely give the Longhorns a tougher test than they would normally expect from a G5 program and if they’re not careful UT could faceplant.
4. #17 Indiana at #18 Iowa (Saturday 9/4)
It’s not a sexy matchup in the conventional sense, but you have to give credit where it’s due. Indiana were one of the darlings of the 2020 season. The Hoosiers shocked the world last season with a breakout 6-2 record. With a full season’s worth of games to play now, IU is gunning for double digit wins. Iowa is their usual selves. The Hawkeyes were once again a strong team last year and that should be the case in 2021 as well. Iowa expects to contend for the West Division this year and have to win their cross-division games to give them their best chance at getting to Indianapolis.
3. #19 Penn State at #13 Wisconsin (Saturday 9/4)
The biggest of the Big Ten’s Week 1 matchups sees two of the best programs in the conference square off. Penn State had a bad year in 2020, no other way around saying it. The Nittany Lions need to rebound in 2021 or there will be a lot of question marks surrounding the direction of the program under James Franklin. Wisconsin is their usual selves, meaning the Badgers should once again be one of the top teams in the league but still a step (or two) behind Ohio State. Both Wisconsin and Penn State want to win their respective divisions, a loss in Week 1 would be a crucial setback for either side.
2. #1 Alabama vs #14 Miami FL (Atlanta, GA) (Saturday 9/4)
The defending champions start off the year in a high profile matchup with another high profile team. Miami isn’t quite playing up to their potential just yet, but the Hurricanes are on more solid footing than we’ve seen in a while. Many are expecting another breakthrough season similar to what we saw in 2017. It might not matter either way if the Canes get back to that level. It will be incredibly hard to unseat Alabama. The Crimson Tide are losing a lot of guys from their championship squad, but new faces with similar levels of talent are coming in to replace those who’ve left for the NFL. It feels foolish betting against Bama but a Week 1 loss would be one of the more likely scenarios for a regular season loss at all for the Tide.
1. #5 Georgia at #3 Clemson (Saturday 9/4)
This one is a no-brainer. Georgia and Clemson’s on again-off again rivalry is once again heating back up. The stakes haven’t been this high since the early 80′s, with both the Tigers and Bulldogs attempting to claim national championships this year. UGA is hoping to rebound and reclaim the SEC East after giving it away to Florida last season. The Dawgs are on the short list of 6 or so teams that are aiming to make the Playoff every year. Clemson is one of the other squads on that special list. The Tigers are hosting and may be favored, but we need to be wary of their lack of depth at the QB position. A loss here might not end a Playoff campaign, but it would be a bad start to one as well as a black eye against a regional recruiting rival.
-
5 G5 Games of the Week
5. Syracuse at Ohio (Saturday 9/4)
Frank Solich unfortunately won’t be the head coach in Athens, but I think his old team is in great position to claim a P5 scalp as hapless Syracuse makes the trek for a rare MAC road date.
4. Marshall at Navy (Saturday 9/4)
Two of the G5′s more consistent brands face off. Marshall is trotting out their first new coach in 15 years while Navy is attempting to spit out the bad taste in their mouths after a disappointing 2020 season.
3. Miami OH at #8 Cincinnati (Saturday 9/4)
The Battle of the Bell is one of FBS football’s oldest rivalries and I love giving it the spotlight. I don’t expect Miami to win of course, while they have been a solid MAC program in the last couple years, the RedHawks aren’t up to the same level as Cincinnati. The Bearcats are favored to repeat as the #1 G5 program in the nation. Cincinnati haven’t lost to their in-state rivals since 2005, giving Miami plenty of reason to try and solve the Cincy defense that gave teams such fits last season.
2. Texas Tech vs Houston (Houston, TX) (Saturday 9/4)
That’s right, Houston was able to call on to upgrade this game to NRG Stadium. The Cougars and Red Raiders are throwing a Southwest Conference reunion party and everybody’s invited. Both Texas Tech and Houston have been struggling lately and this game definitely has high stakes for both programs.
1. Boise State at UCF (Saturday 9/4)
Two of the G5′s biggest brands face off as Boise State travels to the Bounce House to take on UCF. The stakes are obvious: the winner here will be the G5′s #2 option after Cincinnati moving forward through the season.
-
FCS Games of the Week
5. #14 Central Arkansas at Arkansas State (Saturday 9/4)
More likely to happen than you might imagine. Arkansas State moved on from coach Blake Anderson at the end of 2020 and Butch Jones (yeah) needs time to get things set. Central Arkansas has an opportunity to knock off their big brother in Jonesboro.
4. #9 Montana at #20 Washington (Saturday 9/4)
It’s the revival of an ancient PCC series dating back to the 1950′s. Montana will certainly be an underdog against a Washington squad that technically did win the PAC-12 North last year.
3. #21 Northern Iowa at #7 Iowa State (Saturday 9/4)
Iowa State has moved mountains to become this good, but the Cyclones aren’t impervious to upsets as last year showed us. Northern Iowa has their own chance to knock off big brother.
2. #6 Weber State at #24 Utah (Thursday 9/2)
This one should be tough no matter how good Weber State is. The Utes’ physical game will be tough for the Wildcats to overcome, but they’ll take their shot at glory no matter what.
1. #10 Jacksonville State vs UAB (Montgomery, AL) (Wednesday 9/1)
Now this is cool, an FBS-FCS game played at a neutral site. I love to see matchups like this. UAB is one of the best G5 programs of the last 5 years while Jacksonville State is one of the most consistent FCS squads in the deep South.

THE DEGENERATE’S GUIDE TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL TV WATCH ‘EM UPS 2021: WEEK TWO, A MUDDLED AND MAUDLIN WEEK OF MAYHEM IN HONOR OF THOSE WE LOST
Tumblr media
RTARL would like to extend our warmest holiday wishes to those who celebrate and, even if you don’t, happy 9/11. Now who’s ready for some FOOTBALL!!!!?!?!
Tumblr media
So after two weeks of games that combine to count as only one official week even though some teams have already played twice we have only one real question answered: is Alabama still good? Yes, they are. Everything else is still liquefying vapor.
I am assuming everybody is waiting with baited breath for an RTARLsman but I don’t have anything yet. I guess the not-Master Teague RBs on Ohio State are the frontrunners for now. Or that one guy from that one team who was good. You know who I mean.
Saturday, September 11
Matchup    Time (ET)     TV/Mobile
Illinois at Virginia   11:00am   ACCN
Jeff George won Citrus Bowl MVP for the Illini against the Hoos in his last game as a student athlete before becoming the #1 overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft. Based on this history it is safe to presume that whoever the QB is for Illinois today will be the #1 pick in 2022.
VMI at Kent State   11:30am   ESPN3
I’m not sure on this but maybe this game is cancelled.
WKU at Army    11:30am   CBSSN
Army is favored by 6. I bet this game is boring.
Norfolk State at Wake Forest    12:00pm   ACCNX
I don’t see a line listed but whatever it is bet against Wake covering.
Indiana State at Northwestern     12:00pm    BTN
This game is an act of terrorism.
Alabama State at 25 Auburn     12:00pm    SECN
Real body bag season starts today, huh?
Youngstown State at Michigan State  12:00pm   BTN
The Michigan State running back is the guy I was trying to think of earlier! He’s pretty good. Not good enough to make me watch this but I will check on his stats every so often.
Tulsa at Oklahoma State   12:00pm   FS1
I bet Mike Gundy has some really salient thoughts on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and I can’t wait to hear them.
South Carolina at East Carolina   12:00pm      ESPN2
South Carolina is a two point favorite against an East Carolina team that is, per my understanding, not exactly good. So I can only extrapolate that South Carolina is likewise not good.
Pitt at Tennessee  12:00pm   ESPN
Look, I’m not going to pretend this is good television but if Pitt rocks their classic yellow helmets and Tennessee wears non-alternates the colors on the screen will at least be pleasing. The thought of the actual football involved hurts my brain but it’s interesting that the points have gone from a consensus pick ‘em to Pitt -3 over the course of the week. Does Tennessee have any players that are good enough that by missing the game they could impact the gambling that much? Or are people just squaring themselves with the fact the the Vols are really and truly a ruined burnt out hole of a football program? Pound the latter.
12 Oregon at 3 Ohio State  12:00pm   FOX
Losing Kayvon Thibideaux certainly isn’t going to help Oregon but he’s not usually on the field as a run stopper anyway and if Ohio State learned anything last week it’s that they can just run until they feel like throwing a pass. Oregon actually has some legit talent on the d-line besides Thibideaux but the Ducks are gonna be hard-pressed to keep things within two scores here.
Miami (Ohio) at Minnesota   12:00pm   ESPN
If Oregon can’t make a game of it in Columbus look out because this time block is an absolute wasteland. There is scant reason to turn the TV on for the early schedule other than gambling purposes.
Kennesaw State at Georgia Tech   12:00pm    RSN/ESPN3
Georgia Tech probably should have closed up shop after Paul Johnson retired. Either that or just absolutely slathered the football program in dollars. The Yellow Jackets being unable to land any big time recruits while playing in Atlanta is a real mindfuck. They aren’t a AA program playing dress up in a “power” conference they’ve got actual history. I don’t mean to give the impression I want them to be good but I don’t understand how they can be such fodder for so long.
13 Florida at USF    1:00pm    ABC
Remember that year when USF was the best program in the state? Wild stuff. Weird, wild stuff. I know the deal with UF is that they don’t go out of state for contract games but it’s actually kind of surprising they even bothered to keep this trip to Tampa on the schedule. Like the area recruits would probably be happier to go see a game at The Swamp than to kick around their hometown for a pile of shit like this.
Wyoming at NIU    1:30pm   ESPN+
I’m not gonna open the ESPN app for this but if it was on ESPN2 I’d probably check in on it during commercials. Aesthetically pleasing trash with an upside for actual entertainment.
Middle Tennessee at 19 Virginia Tech    2:00pm   ACCNX
Virginia Tech’s home crowd scene was the normie story of last week’s games. People that don’t watch college football were either aghast or frantically waving their blue lives matter flags in response. Us in this space just ate the shame and forgot it happened by the time Saturday’s games kicked off. My theory is that VPI is not actually any good but UNC’s 2020 season was a well-timed fluke and the last hurrah of Mack Brown’s storied coaching career. The Hokies are at home, though, and MTSU is almost certainly not on the same athletic level as the Turkey Gobblers so I’d probably take the home team -20 if I were so inclined to wager on this particular game that is being broadcast on the ACC’s new pornography channel.
Rutgers at Syracuse    2:00pm    ACCN
Holy fuck does this game suck. Reuniting former Big East, uh, rivals (??? does Rutgers have any natural enemies?) in a cross-conference classic betwixt the B1G and the ACC.
Duquesne at Ohio   2:00pm   ESPN3
I don’t think I need to explain to you all the national title implications riding on this game.
Toledo at 8 Notre Dame    2:30pm     Peacock
Just remember that if you subscribe to Peacock you are at the very least tacitly supporting Notre Dame. If for some reason you’re watching this please report back on how many of those defensive pick plays Notre Dame runs. They were doing that shit constantly against Florida State last week and it drove me nuts. I think the idea is that you are so flagrantly illegal so often that the refs grow numb to it and just don’t call it at all.
Robert Morris at Central Michigan     3:00pm    ESPN3
Not to be outdone by the early games, the 3 o’clock set is equally terrible.
Purdue at UConn    3:00pm    CBSSN
I bet Edsall still gets bonuses for stupid shit even now that he’s retired or whatever the official designation was for him no longer coaching.
Boston College at UMass    3:30pm    FloFootball/NESN+
I don’t know what FloFootball is but I know it isn’t anything to do with the state of Florida.
Tumblr media
Ball State at 11 Penn State    3:30pm    FS1
It surprises me to see Penn State as only -22.5 favorites. That seems very kind to Ball State. Hopefully I’m wrong and the Ball State Lettermans take it to the Sanduskys.
Murray State at 7 Cincinnati    3:30pm    ESPN+
Practice week continues.
Temple at Akron    3:30pm    ESPN+
Pound the under.
Georgia Southern at Florida Atlantic   3:30pm   Stadium
There is really nothing going on this week.
Air Force at Navy   3:30pm   CBS
Middies vs. Fly Boys in the first leg of the Commander’s Cup on the twentieth anniversary of 9/11. I can’t imagine the amount of emotional manipulation that’s going to make its way onto this broadcast. Normally I watch these games but I don’t think I can do it this year.
UAB at 2 Georgia    3:30pm    ESPN2
Georgia may well be absurdly talented on the defensive side of the ball but I’d be surprised to see them make it through the regular season with fewer than two losses.
5 Texas A&M at Colorado     3:30pm     FOX
This is only interesting if the Aggies spring a leak.
California at TCU    3:30pm    ESPNU
Things most certainly are not looking up.
Buffalo at Nebraska    3:30pm    BTN
Nebraska is in an interesting position because if they buck the odds and end up being good after we’ve all been so ready to see a National Championship-winning coach get fired that would be funny but if they end up being really bad it’s even funnier. Go Bulls!
Mercer at 1 Alabama    4:00pm   SECN
I’ll cry a little if Saban pulls the starters in the first half and the Tide beats Mercer by less than they beat Miami.
South Alabama at Bowling Green   4:00pm    ESPN+
10 Iowa at 9 Iowa State    4:30pmABC
This is not the kind of top 10 matchup I can just sit idly by and let it happen. Your silence is complicity in this monstrous display of modernity.
SC State at 6 Clemson    5:00pm      ACCN
Clemson dropped all the way to #6 and they’ll hang around the top of the polls because they don’t have the toughest conference schedule in the world but my confidence in them is not high right now. I think the new QB is just a guy. He’s talented as hell but I don’t see him being great.
Illinois State at Western Michigan     5:00pm   ESPN3
This is either MACtion or MACtion adjacent and I have only one word for this midwestern trash: abhorrent.
LIU at West Virginia   5:00pm    ESPN+
LIU plays football?
Lamar at UTSA      6:00pm    ESPN3
Downside: You’re watching one of the least important games of the year. Upside: You’re really not missing anything.
Portland State at Washington State    6:00pm    P12N
Washington State was a perfect spot for the stupid pirate fuckhead and his leaving has ruined the program and, eventually, his reputation. Not relevant to this game necessarily but this game isn’t relevant to anything else, either.
Gardner-Webb at Charlotte   6:00pm    ESPN3
Oh, yeah, feel the excitement.
Bethune-Cookman at UCF   6:30pm   ESPN+
Go Cats.
NC Central at Marshall    6:30pm    ESPN+
The hits keep coming.
Houston at Rice   6:30pm    CBSSN
I’ve always had a soft spot for Holgo and for Houston football but somehow I really don’t like seeing him coach the Cougs. This is SWC magic but with no magic. UNLESS! Houston can put up 100. I don’t think they even have the guys to do it but this is Rice we’re talking about here.
Nicholls at Louisiana    7:00pm    ESPN3
Keep the energy up.
North Texas at SMU   7:00pm   ESPN+
I bet is MS621 were still alive he’d be at this game giving Spencer’s boys hell. Sadly he died doing what he loved, curing his COVID by eating ivermectin paste out of a horse’s butt. R.I.P., friend. Neigh to you wherever you are.
Southeastern La. at Louisiana Tech   7:00pm    ESPN3
Even the low tier stuff is geared up for annihilation. This is a bodybag week for all time.
Memphis at Arkansas State    7:00pm    ESPN+
Memphis getting less than a touchdown against Arkansas State seems like easy money but I have no real concept of either of these teams just yet. Maybe the end is nigh for the Tigers glory years? I sure hope not but it’s possible.
NC State at Mississippi State    7:00pm     ESPN2
This game should be as fun as a parents funeral.
Southern Illinois at Kansas State   7:00pm      ESPN+
Over the past week I experienced derision for referring the the guys in purple and silver as “Kansas State” instead of “K State” and that stung because it always surprises me that anybody cares about them enough to have a strong opinion about them.
Stephen F. Austin at Texas Tech    7:00pm    ESPN+
Shrugs
15 Texas at Arkansas    7:00pm   ESPN
Let’s see if Texas is ready to run with the big boys of the SEC! Arkansas is given a decent shot to win this game and that makes the “15″ next to Texas appear extremely suspect in my eyes.
Texas Southern at Baylor    7:00pm   ESPN+
This week Texas Southern is the people’s champion.
Texas State at FIU   7:00pm    ESPN+
Oh, Butch, why have you done this to yourself?
Western Carolina at 4 Oklahoma      7:00pm     PPV
All the Westen Carolina fans are buying this PPV to see their guys score 40.
New Mexico State at New Mexico    7:00pm     Stadium
I looked up the historic rivalry last year to figure out why it was played early in the season instead of at the end but I’ve forgotten and don’t feel the need to look it up again. I figured out how to watch Stadium on my TV but I also forgot that and don’t feel the need to look it up again.
Appalachian State at 22 Miami (FL)  7:00pm   ESPNU
My gut tells me Miami is probably legitimately about the 14th best team in the country but I still would never advise you to bet actual money on the Hurricanes. Are they 9 points better than App State? Easily. They should win by 20+. Are they liable to fuck around and lose or scrape out a win in the final seconds? Absolutely. Let’s fuckin’ go.
Morgan State at Tulane    7:00pm    ESPN+
A lot of people learned to love the Green Wave last week but it’s hard to keep that going with their schedule. Don’t forget them later in the year when the CBSSN glow is really shining.
Liberty at Troy   7:00pm   ESPN+
Liberty -4 is maybe my surest advice of the week. If Malik Willis is as good as his press the fake school should have this game on ice early.
Eastern Michigan at 18 Wisconsin   7:00pm    FS1
I find Wisconsin’s losing effort against Penn State last week to be a personal affront against me and all of nature.
Eastern Kentucky at Louisville    7:00pm   ACCNX
I think this game being broadcast at night on ACCNX means they’re playing naked.
Grambling State at Southern Miss    7:00pm    ESPN3
This is the kind of game that belongs on an app.
Hampton at Old Dominion    7:00pm    ESPN3
This is the kind of game that belongs on a well-worn high school football field.
Austin Peay at 20 Mississippi   7:30pm     ESPN+/SECN+
This is a pretty big OOC game for an SEC team.
Georgia State at 24 North Carolina    7:30pm    RSN/ESPN3
One of several GSUs, I think this is the one I most hope emerges victorious this week.
Idaho at Indiana   7:30pm    BTN
Wait, wasn’t Indiana like #10 last week? What the hell happened to them? No, don’t tell me. Seriously, don’t.
Missouri at Kentucky     7:30pm    SECN
When the SEC hits 24 teams the “S!E!C!” chants are gonna seem really stupid.
Howard at Maryland    7:30pm    BTN
There’s no official line for this game but I hope the Bison can pull off the upset in this classic local rivalry game.
Jacksonville State at Florida State    8:00pm   ACCN
Still shaking my head at FSU icing their own kicker. Jesus, Norvell. Get your shit together.
McNeese at LSU     8:00pm      ESPN+/SECN+
LOLSU was my lock of the week last week if you’re considering taking gambling advice from me.
Washington at Michigan    8:00pm    ABC
UDub lost to a 1-AA team last week and now they have to go on the road and beat Michigan. Which seems inevitable, to be honest.
Cal Poly at Fresno State    10:00pm    CW59
The murder rate will continue to increase as the day progresses. I always kind of like it when a local broadcast shows up on the sheet. So pretty much none of us have legal access to this game. It makes it more special.
San Diego State at Arizona    10:00pm    P12N
Pac-12 Network is similar to CW59 in that almost nobody in the country has legal access to their broadcasts. If you’ve read enough of these posts you are aware that SDSU is my weird very deep backup team. I don’t have a reason to align myself with the school or program, I just tend to enjoy watching their games.
Vanderbilt at Colorado State     10:00pm    CBSSN
This is an abomination.
21 Utah at BYU     10:15pm    ESPN
This is a lowkey fun rivalry. I’m pretty sure I write the same thing every year but it’s still true. Go Utes.
Stanford at 14 USC     10:30pm    FOX
I think USC could win a national championship and I’d still be baffled that Clay Helton is their coach. Of course, they won’t win a national championship as long as Clay Helton is their coach but they apparently won’t ever get embarrassing enough to fire him, either.
Idaho State at Nevada    10:30pm    Stadium
This is the lowpoint of the week’s schedule and you have to stay up late to watch it on a network that only exists as an app or as part of a hidden unlockable download-only level of cable subscription. This is the beauty of the college game.
UNLV at 23 Arizona State    10:30pm   ESPN2
Herm Edwards figured out the trick to looking good in the Pac-12 without having a particularly great team and I can’t make up my mind if I’m rooting for him to keep sliding on that rail or to fall off it. I think I’ve come around to rooting for him but it’s a very dynamic and fluid situation.
Hawaii at Oregon State   11:00pm    FS1
Hawaii gets to play at their normal time for a game against the bottom of the barrel of the Pac-12 but they’re an 11-point underdog. If you’re ever going to take Hawaii, this is the stars lining up for you to do it. It’s still a big “if” but I’m saying there’s a chance.

Canceled. Postponed. Empty.
Coronavirus fears force cancellation of World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal (montrealgazette.com) Jason Magder, Montreal Gazette Updated: March 11, 2020
The Quebec government has axed the World Figure Skating Championships, slated to be held in Montreal starting Monday.
Health Minister Danielle McCann announced the event was cancelled at a news conference on Wednesday, citing fears of the spread of the new coronavirus.
The week-long event is expected to host 200 skaters from more than 50 countries. But there have been concerns about international travel because of the global coronavirus outbreak.
Governments have been warning against major gatherings of people travelling from around the world, resulting in the cancellations of many conferences. In Canada, chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam is advising Canadians to avoid cruises and self-monitor for 14 days if they are arriving home from any kind of travel due to the coronavirus....
Two things: a) This was done by the Quebec provincial government, not the International Skating Union or Skate Canada (the national federation), despite skaters and others publicly begging the ISU to actually take a responsible stand (...for once). b) This happened also on the day when Quebec confirmed its eight case of COVID-19 coronavirus.
Coachella and Stagecoach Are Officially Postponed to October (rollingstone.com) By Amy X. Wang & Samantha Hissong & Jon Blistein  March 10, 2020 7:05PM ET
Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, neither the Coachella Music and Arts Festival nor the Stagecoach Music Festival this year will take place as scheduled, organizers confirmed to Rolling Stone.
Coachella was originally slated for two consecutive weekends next month — April 10th, 11th, and 12th, followed by April 17th, 18th, and 19th — at Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, about two hours outside of Los Angeles. Stagecoach was set for the weekend after, April 24th to 26th. A newly reunited Rage Against the Machine was set to headline Coachella alongside Travis Scott and Frank Ocean. Multiple sources told Rolling Stone on Monday that Goldenvoice, the AEG subsidiary that organizes the festival, had been in talks with various artists’ management teams about postponement for the last week, adding that the talks were still ongoing as of late Monday night.
In a Twitter post and statement to Rolling Stone Tuesday evening, Goldenvoice said: “At the direction of the County of Riverside and local health authorities, we must sadly confirm the rescheduling of Coachella and Stagecoach due to COVID-19 concerns. While this decision comes at a time of universal uncertainty, we take the safety and health of our guests, staff and community very seriously. We urge everyone to follow the guidelines and protocols put forth by public health officials.” [...]
Warriors to play Nets without fans in arena following San Francisco order  ESPN News Services March 11, 2020
The Golden State Warriors will play Thursday's game against the Brooklyn Nets with no fans inside the Chase Center, the team announced Wednesday."Due to escalating concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, and in consultation with the City and County of San Francisco, tomorrow night's game vs. the Nets at Chase Center will be played without fans," the team tweeted. "Fans with tickets to this game will receive a refund in the amount paid."The Warriors are still meeting about the matter, and further direction could come from a league owners call Wednesday afternoon, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. After Thursday's game, the Warriors are away from the Chase Center until March 25....
NCAA March Madness games in Cleveland, Dayton will not have spectators, says Gov. DeWine (cleveland.com) By Nathan Baird, cleveland.com
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Wednesday he will issue an order barring spectators from indoor sporting events in the state due to coronavirus concerns. That means no spectators at next week’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament events — the “First Four” games in Dayton and the first and second-round games scheduled for Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.DeWine said details about outdoor sporting events — such as Indians and Reds baseball and the Ohio State football Spring Game — are still being worked out. [...]  The Big Ten issued a statement that its men’s basketball tournament in Indianapolis next week will proceed as planned.
The Big Ten tournament proceeding with spectators seems ... unwise. Rutgers, Maryland, Illinois, Nebraska and Iowa, at least, are all coming from areas with multiple cases of COVID-19.
The NCAA has also maintained a studied silence about what will happen with the men’s tournament subregionals or the women’s tournament “pods”, some of which will technically be slated to occur in areas with ongoing outbreaks. They have stated that they will make decisions “in the coming days”, whatever that means.
FED CUP FINALS AND PLAY-OFFS POSTPONED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK (tennis.com) By Tennis.com March 11, 2020
On Wednesday, ITF announced the postponement of both the Fed Cup Finals and the play-offs due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Finals were originally scheduled to take place next month in Budapest, Hungary, at the Laszlo Papp Sport Arena.
“We are extremely disappointed to have to make this decision, but we will not risk the safety and welfare of players, captains, event staff or spectators,” ITF president David Haggerty. This decision has not been made lightly; the threat posed by the COVID-19 is a serious one and calls for us to act responsibly as a federation and as human beings. This situation goes beyond sport.
“New dates for the Finals and for the Play-offs will be announced in due course and will primarily be guided by the length of time that tennis as a whole is affected by COVID-19. We will continue to collaborate with our colleagues across the sport to ensure that the impact on players, tournaments, rights holders and fans is as minimal as possible....”
At the moment, it appears that four of the next five important tournaments on the men’s tour -- Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, and Rome -- are very likely to be canceled or held without spectators ... and the Miami Open is teetering, and even the venerable French Open appears endangered. On the women’s tour, Miami, Charleston, Madrid and Rome may face the same choices.

Could we have two semifinal rematches in the College Football Playoff?
The semifinals of the Faculty Soccer Playoff might look very acquainted on New Yr’s Eve. 4 of the groups presently within the high 5 of the AP Prime 25 made a playoff look in both 2020 or 2021. And whereas any of these 5 groups might simply make the playoff, we’re choosing these groups with playoff expertise to make the playoff discipline on the finish of 2022 in our first set of bowl projections. Georgia is our provisional No. 1 seed because the Bulldogs can solidify their standing as the highest crew over the course of the common season with a 13-0 document and wins over Tennessee and Alabama. The Big Picture
I hope you weren’t expecting something different to happen. 2020 Alabama might be the best college football team we’ve seen in the history of the sport so yeah they were always gonna win this.
Yeah it is depressing that basically everything played out in a similar fashion, right down to the same four Playoff teams. I mean, we’re at a point in the sport much like the 70′s where the same few teams are always at the peak. It’s a bummer but that’s college football for you.
-
The Bowl Records
Big 12: 8-0 MAC: 6-2 PAC-12: 8-3 Big Ten: 4-4 American: 3-3 Independent: 2-2 SEC: 5-7 MWC: 3-4 Sun Belt: 2-4 ACC: 2-8 C-USA: 0-6
The Big 12 shocked everybody with a perfect bowl season. The MAC and PAC-12 had surprisingly strong postseasons as well, though in the PAC’s case this came with losing their two highest profile bowls. The SEC underperformed outside of the very strongest teams in the league, of course Alabama notched two wins to help prop up the conference’s record. Poor C-USA laid an egg, going 0-for the postseason.
The Final Ranking
AP Poll
1. Alabama 15-0 (8-0) 2. Ohio State 13-2 (9-0) 3. Clemson 12-2 (8-0) 4. Texas A&M 12-1 (7-1) 5. Oklahoma 12-2 (7-2) 6. Notre Dame 11-2 7. Iowa State 11-3 (8-1) 8. Florida 11-3 (7-1) 9. Georgia 11-2 (6-2) 10. Cincinnati 13-1 (8-0) 11. Oregon 11-3 (7-2) 12. Auburn 10-3 (5-3) 13. Indiana 11-2 (8-1) 14. Texas 10-3 (6-3) 15. Liberty 12-1 16. Coastal Carolina 13-1 (8-0) 17. Oklahoma State 10-3 (6-3) 18. Iowa 10-3 (6-3) 19. Stanford 10-3 (7-2) 20. UCF 10-3 (5-3) 21. Arizona State 10-3 (6-3) 22. BYU 10-3 23. Northwestern 10-4 (6-3) 24. USC 9-5 (7-2) 25. Wisconsin 9-4 (6-3)
And there we have it, the final rankings for the 2020 season.
-
I hope you all had fun reading this little flight of fancy. I’ll be back soon with some real life football content. Stay tuned, the season is almost upon us!

NCAA bracket update: Schedule and scores for 2022 men’s tournament
Tumblr media
Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports
This is what’s happening at the 2022 men’s NCAA tournament.
The 2022 men’s NCAA tournament is underway, but the madness is just beginning. The opening hours of the tournament gave us one big upset: No. 12 seed Richmond knocking off an Iowa Hawkeyes team that just won the Big Ten tournament and had become a trendy Final Four pick.
Gonzaga, the top overall seed in the tournament, looked to be in trouble for the first 30 minutes of their game against No. 16 seed Georgia State. Then Chet Holmgren, the potential No. 1overall pick in the NBA draft, woke up and carried his team to a win. Now Holmgren and the Zags are meeting Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers, a team with its own projected top-five pick in big man Jalen Duren.
The most impressive team on day one? It might be Tennessee. The No. 3 seed Vols, fresh off an SEC tournament title, smoked Big South champ Longwood 88-56. Tennessee now faces No. 11 seed Michigan in round two.
We’ll keep you updated on the scores and upcoming schedule at the 2022 men’s NCAA tournament. Bet on the full tournament at DraftKings Sportsbook.

The Michigan Wolverines are Finally Victors
Tumblr media
The Michigan Wolverines after winning the Big 10 Championship against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The University of Michigan football team hadn’t been to the Big 10 Championship since 2003 or beaten Ohio State since 2011. When the Wolverines hired Jim Harbuagh in 2015, they expected a turn around for the program. To their surprise, Harbaugh had gone 0-6 against the Buckeyes and hadn’t made the Big 10 Championship in 17 years. 2021 seemed to be a turning point for the Wolverines, saying at the start of the season that “this is our year.”
After going 7-0, Michigan had all eyes on them leading up to the notorious Michigan vs. Michigan State game. The Wolverines lost after having an 18 point lead, and everybody believed that Michigan was out of the running for the Big 10 Championship. On November 27, Michigan shocked the world beating the Buckeyes 42-27. This victory secured them a spot in the Big 10 Championship. The win against the Buckeyes is believed to be the start of something new with head coach, Jim Harbuagh, saying, “It feels like the beginning.” Heisman front runner and senior at U of M, Aidan Hutchinson, couldn’t leave Michigan without fulfilling his legacy of beating Ohio State and winning the Big 10 Championship. After four years of blood, sweat, and tears, Hutchinson can finally say that he has fulfilled his legacy. One of Michigan’s most famous head coaches, Bo Schembeckler has a famous quote stating, “Those who stay will be champions.” Hutchinson’s dad played under Schembeckler and has heard that quote all throughout his life. By staying his four years, Aidan Hutchinson can finally say that he is a champion.
Although Michigan has done what many said they weren’t capable of doing, “the job’s not done.” Michigan is now ranked 2nd in the College Football Playoffs, with a big game against Georgia on New Years Eve. If Michigan were to win this game, it would send them to the National Championship for the first time since 1997. Many have said Michigan should get rid of Jim Harbaugh after this season, but Harbaugh proved all the doubters wrong. The Wolverines are “having fun” and “finally coming together as a team.” The pieces have finally come together for the Wolverines. Cade McNamara, Hassan Haskins, Blake Corum, David Ojabo, and Donovan Edwards are among a few of the stars Michigan has on this year's team.
All eyes are on Michigan as the first round of the College Football Playoffs draw near. Michigan has one of the most well-rounded teams this season, and has a very good chance of beating the Georgia Bulldogs on December 31st at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. They will need to continue playing like they have been: as a team and having fun while doing so. Michigan has all the key pieces to become a National Champion and by playing smart, and having fun, Michigan will “be the victors.”
