Things you need to know for Iowa Race 2:
-Yesterday we got a Newgarden-McLaughlin-O’Ward podium on Race 1.
-Power on pole position for today.
-Kirkwood is inelegible for participating in the Warm-Up for today’s race after he missed the post-practice drivers weigh-in on Friday. Penalty is 10 minutes of practice time and today’s warm-up is 10 minutes for each group.
-A man is crowned as KING OF CORN 🌽 and we find that FASCINATING.
-Newgarden after winning yesterday decided that he is gonna be in his reputation era for today. He said that anyone blocking him today is gonna end in the wall and called lapped cars “that fucking people”. QUOTE: “You don’t have to pull over, but just don’t be aggressive & wave in front of the leader, block the leader, chop the leader (…) There’s just a point where you’ve got to understand that that comes back around … You should be thinking long-term (…) If you (mirror-block) me, I’m going to fence you & if you’re the leader, I’m going to do you so dirty if you did that to me.”
-Palou (championship leader) is starting 7th, Newgarden (2nd) is starting 3rd and Dixon (3rd) is starting 4th. EDIT: Starting positions are 12th for Palou, 7th for Newgarden and 9th for Dixon.
-Pagenoud is still not clear to race after crashing three races ago and is being substituted by Connor Daly.
- It’s an oval so keep in mind that some rookies don’t race in ovals. This is the case of Marcus Amstrong, whose car is being driven by Takuma Sato.

Injuries, Job Security, and How MotoGP and Indycar Differ...Or Don't.
In the last two years, two racers I support have been seriously injured. One was Enea Bastianini, rider of the #23 Ducati in MotoGP, and the other was David Malukas, who never actually got to drive the #6 NTT Data Arrow McLaren-Chevrolet Indycar.
So, just to go over what happened to them: Enea Bastianini was injured in the opening sprint race of the 2023 MotoGP season, the Portuguese GP at Portimao. Luca Marini went up his inside into turn five (Torre VIP), lost it, and his bike slid into Enea's bike. Enea broke his collarbone in this crash, wound up missing the opening five races, came back, injured himself again at Catalunya, and missed another three races.
Enea would return for the Indonesian Grand Prix and would then win the Malaysian Grand Prix towards the end of the season. That win, combined with Jorge Martin on the Pramac Ducati failing to beat Francesco Bagnaia for the championship, secured Enea's seat for 2024.
So, while Enea was enjoying a secure offseason, David Malukas was preparing for his switch from Dale Coyne Racing to a frontrunning team in the form of Arrow McLaren...except, he never actually made his debut for the team.
David Malukas was mountain biking in California, riding an easy trail, when, trying to slow himself, pulled the front brake too hard, went up and over the handlebars, and landed on his hands. He would break his left wrist and it was announced he would miss St. Pete and probably Thermal.
St. Pete and probably Thermal soon became St. Pete and definitely Thermal, missing those two races. Callum Ilott would fill in.
Malukas missed Long Beach next, with Theo Pourchaire in the car now.
Then Theo Pourchaire raced Long Beach as well.
Around this time, various rumors started flying about Malukas getting replaced. This only grew as Nathan Brown reported that Malukas had traveled to Panama in order to receive stem cell shots to speed up his recovery, and only then did he get the pins in his wrist removed.
Then, after Barber - the fourth race of the season, Malukas blacked out his twitter page. I was sat in a discord debating what exactly this meant with some other Indycar fans, with news picking up that he had been dropped. With the story pretty much out there, Arrow McLaren made the announcement early in the morning, David Malukas had been released after failing to meet his contractual obligations.
By now, it's been announced that Ilott will do the Indy 500, and then Theo Pourchaire will fill out the rest of the season in the #6. The Malukas at McLaren story ended before it could even begin.
Meanwhile, in MotoGPland, Enea Bastianini continued with the factory Ducati team. However, with Jorge Martin now building up an annoyingly large championship lead and Marc Marquez on the Ducati stealing all the attention, the whole world seems to think it's between the two of them to get the Ducati factory seat for 2025.
For the record, Enea is tied on points with Marquez, just two behind his teammate, and spent this weekend's race - the French Grand Prix at the Le Mans Bugatti Circuit - starting tenth, getting a penalty, recovering to fourth, setting fastest lap, and finishing just 2.2 seconds off the lead.
Enea is an immense talent, he's the rider I chose to support when I decided to become a MotoGP fan ahead of the 2023 season, and it's so rotten to see his career falling apart because of factors outside of his control.
As for Malukas, he's a young, popular kid and has proven so talented on the ovals in a Dale Coyne Racing car. I was so eager to see what he could do with an Arrow McLaren, particularly at tracks like Iowa, Gateway, and Nashville which seemed like they'd suit him. Now, we're not going to get the chance, and it's unclear where he might land if he were to try and return to Indycar.
So, in theory, MotoGP gives more time to injured racers, but no matter what series you're in, motorsports can be a cutthroat business. Bastianini and Malukas certainly aren't the first racers to lose top rides after an injury, and they certainly won't be the last. It's not exactly an industry known for job security.
If I could manifest a happy resolution to both, I'd have Enea Bastianini go to factory Aprilia to join Maverick VInales, while David Malukas could join Meyer Shank Racing (perhaps with Tom Blomqvist returning to IMSA with the same team) to reinforce their oval program the same way Felix Rosenqvist has revitalized that team on the road and street circuits.
For now though, we wait to see what happens to them.
To end on a happier note, Brad Keselowski won the Darlington Goodyear 400 NASCAR race last night running a throwback scheme in honor of the TOM's Castrol Supra. That is an awesome motorsports word randomizer and the fact that it's real is why NASCAR is really cool in 2024.
One day I'll write a blogpost where talking about current NASCAR is actually the point instead of just spending the final paragraph gushing about last weekend's cool race.

BAE Systems will improve GPS technology in the Eurofighter Typhoon
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/17/2023 - 14:00 in Military
After successful activities to demonstrate functional compatibility and feasibility of physical installation, BAE Systems' Digital Anti-jam GPS Receiver (DIGAR) was selected to continue in the next phase of the Phase 4 Improvements (P4E) capability program on the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.
DIGAR will increase the protection of the aircraft against GPS signal interference, falsification and radio frequency (RF) interference, so that pilots can perform their missions in the most contested RF environments.
DIGAR uses advanced electronic antenna, high-performance signal processing and digital beam formation for significantly improved GPS signal reception and superior interference immunity. These capabilities considerably increase the level of protection against GPS interference and are critical for combat aircraft while maneuvering in a contested battle space.
The fighter will also receive the new GEMVII-6 airborne digital GPS receiver from BAE Systems which, when coupled to the electronic unit of the DIGAR antenna, allows the platform to conduct high-capacity digital beam formation anti-jamming.
“Modern fighters require accurate positioning and navigation data for mission success in GPS-contested environments,” said Luke Bishop, director of Navigation Systems and Sensors at BAE Systems. "Our DIGAR antenna electronic components and GEM VII GPS receivers are reliable to protect these vital platforms in GPS-challenged environments to support mission success."
The Eurofighter Typhoon is the backbone of the combat to air defense of the United Kingdom and several of its main European and international allies. Serving nine nations, it provides 24/7 air security, 365 days a year and is in frontline operations, including NATO's ongoing air policing throughout Eastern Europe.
BAE Systems, as part of the Eurofighter consortium of four countries behind the aircraft, is continuously investing in the Typhoon jet to maintain its cutting-edge military capability.
In addition to the Typhoon, DIGAR is also installed on the F-16, F-15 and other special-purpose aircraft in the U.S., such as air interdiction and force protection platforms, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Leveraging more than 40 years of GPS experience, BAE Systems' GPS product family offers suitable size, weight and power characteristics for a variety of applications, including portable electronics, precision guided ammunition, unmanned aerial vehicles, vehicles and aircraft.
The work at DIGAR and GEMVII takes place at BAE Systems' facilities in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where the company invested in a state-of-the-art engineering and production center with 25,800 square meters.

ALEX PALOU'S MESSY DIVORCE WITH CHIP GANASSI RACING: THE RUNDOWN
Welcome to the Hottest Drama in INDYCAR. If you're new here, this post will get you caught up to speed. If you've been following the shitshow, grab a cold one on me and settle in.
TIMELINE
Jenna Fryer of AP News reports rumors that Alex Palou might move to McLaren in 2023 (June 2nd, 2022)
This was the day that it was announced that Alexander Rossi would be moving to Arrow McLaren SP in 2023. At the time, it was still assumed that Chip Ganassi Racing and Alex Palou were on good terms and that there was no reason for them to split.
2. Alex Palou states he is happy at Chip Ganassi Racing (June 3rd, 2022)
In contrast to the rumor mill speculations, Alex states he is happy where he is, and we are given no reason to suspect that anything is amiss.
3. Chip Ganassi Racing announces they have taken the option on Alex Palou's contract (July 12, 2022)
So far, nothing seems out of the ordinary. INDYCAR teams sometimes have contract options built in that the teams are allowed to take to re-sign drivers. It all depends on the contract's structure.
4. Alex Palou takes to Twitter to deny the press release from Chip Ganassi Racing, announce he is leaving the team (July 12, 2022)
In his Twitter thread, Alex denies that he is returning to the team, states he told the team he would not return and that the quote cited in the team's press release was not approved by him. When teams draft a press release, they will sometimes insert a placeholder quote to either be approved or replaced by the driver. However, it is unusual for a team to go ahead and post a press release with an unapproved quote.
5. McLaren Racing announces that they have signed Alex Palou to their family of drivers for 2023 (July 12, 2022)
5 minutes after Alex's thread was posted, McLaren Racing announces he is signed with them for 2022. Notice how it is not specified which part of McLaren he is signed with, only that he will be part of their TPC program. It was reported after the Monaco GP that Zak Brown made comments that is dissatisfied with F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo's performance. It is highly speculated that his contract will be revoked early (he is under contract through the 2023 season, though McLaren are known to break contracts early if a driver's performance doesn't meet their expectations).
6. Chip Ganassi Racing stands by their press release, stating that Alex Palou is under contract through 2023 (July 12, 2022)
Before this news, it was speculated that the press release was accidental. However, that was not the case, and the showdown between the two teams for the fate of the defending INDYCAR champion started.
7. Rumors surface that Alex Palou will be benched for races in the 2022 season (July 14, 2022)
On top of all of the contractual drama, there is still a championship to be won and Alex Palou is in the mix of it yet again. Each race following the start of this mess there have been rumors that CGR will bench him, and they do have Ryan Hunter-Reay under contract as a backup driver. However, until the weekend of the Iowa Double-Header, Ryan Hunter-Reay was competing in the Superstar Racing Experience series. Tony Kanaan was also rumored to fill the seat, but he also was competing in the Superstar Racing Experience. He has been confirmed to race in every weekend so far.
8. Zak Brown confirms he has not seen Alex Palou's contract with Chip Ganassi Racing, and a 'new' Youtube account for Alex Palou appears (July 21, 2022) (use a paywall blocker extension)
It's not unusual for team owners to not know the exact details of other teams' contracts, but usually the driver or their management at least informs potentially interested teams of any legal caveats that might arise. Its highly likely the falling out between Monaco Increase Management (Alex's management company) and his former manager likely contributed to Alex's current situation. Furthermore, the weird Youtube channel business. Nothing has emerged as to who purchased the account or is running it, but its all very strange.
9. Alex Palou reports Chip Ganassi has limited his access to team data outside of the racetrack. (July 22, 2022)
It may seem like a small thing, but teams usually only do this if the driver in question is on their way out of the team.
10. Chip Ganassi Racing files a civil action lawsuit against Alex Palou in the Marion County Court (July 27, 2022)
The exact details of the complaint are sealed, but it is known that a request was filed to expedite the hearing date.
11. Alex Palou's lawyers state the lawsuit filed by Chip Ganassi Racing would impact Alex's opportunity to compete in Formula 1 (July 28, 2022)
This confirms what the motorsports world has been speculating since the shitshow started, that Alex Palou was offered an opportunity to drive in Formula 1 and decided it was too good to pass up. Its well known that McLaren is shopping for a new F1 driver to replace Daniel Ricciardo and is signing many young and talented drivers including Colton Herta and Pato O'Ward to their TPC.
IMPLICATIONS
There's a lot to unpack here. First of all, Alex has effectively severed his ties to one of the most successful INDYCAR teams on the grid and made the whole falling out a very public affair. It's not a good look for him, and regardless of the outcome of the lawsuit this whole debacle is going to leave a black stain on his career. In the words of Scott Dixon, "if you're going to have an example of how not to do things, this is 100 percent how you would do it." His current teammates at CGR have begun to distance themselves from him, and his possible future teammates at McLaren have said they don't believe he'll be racing anywhere in 2023. Connections are everything in motorsports, and there will be career-altering consequences to blowing up a relationship with Chip Ganassi Racing.
So where will Alex Palou drive in 2023? The answer is yet to be determined. Chip Ganassi has stated he would like to have Alex Palou in the 10 car next year. McLaren have stated they are not interested in a buyout of a driver they were led to believe was a free agent. It's entirely possible that Ganassi parks Alex next year if they retain him, they have done so before and there is a precedent for it, but it would depend on Alex's championship chances this season and how badly the relationship has been tanked. If he does get parked, he wouldn't be allowed to drive anywhere, effectively hurting his career even more.
There is also the drama surrounding McLaren's lineup for 2023. So far, the only drivers confirmed are Pato O'Ward and Alexander Rossi for AMSP and Lando Norris for F1. Daniel Ricciardo does have a contract through 2023, but as previously noted, McLaren are known to break contracts early if a driver doesn't meet their performance standards. Then there are all the drivers being signed to their TPC. They are shopping around for a new driver, its just a matter of 1. when do they want a new driver, and 2. who it is going to be. The statement by Alex Palou's lawyers confirms he was strongly in the hunt for an F1 seat, and was possibly going to be given that opportunity by McLaren.
I think it is safe to say that regardless of the result of the lawsuit, this whole debacle has thrown Alex Palou's career in the bin. It's a shame, because he is good at what he does, but things like this show your potential future employers that you are not a loyal driver and are not capable of handling negotiations in a professional manner.
And that, is the latest on the tea. The current date is July 28, 2022, and this post will be updated when more is known.
TLDR: Ganassi announced they signed Alex Palou for next year, Alex denied it saying he was leaving, McLaren announced they signed Alex Palou for next year, and Ganassi reiterated they have Alex under contract. Now Alex Palou is getting sued by Ganassi.
#indycar#alex palou's messy team divorce#i think i've covered just about everything#long post#i did not mean for it to get that long but there is a lot of tea

Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center
Architecture: LMN Architects
Location: Chicago, IL, USA
LMN Architects in collaboration with Booth Hansen is pleased to celebrate the design and construction of the new Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Located at a unique prominent site on campus, the structure celebrates the garden and elliptical form of the Harry W. Pearce Memorial Grove and establishes a new front door for technology in downtown Chicago.
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is Chicago’s only public research university and one of the most diverse universities in the United States. The new 135,000 SFT Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center (CDRLC) at UIC will consolidate the currently fragmented Computer & Science Department in a new home and co-locate it with a large cluster of university-administered classrooms at the heart of the east campus. The building is designed to be a welcoming, inclusive, and inviting space for the diverse student body. The building will serve research needs with state-of-the-art facilities, accommodate the rapidly increasing undergraduate enrollment in computer science and become a new campus hub.
“Illinois is home to the best universities and research centers in the world and boasts a talented workforce that attracts companies from across the globe,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “This new learning center on the UIC campus, made possible through funding from our historic bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital plan, will further cement the university’s place as a world-class institution that excels in preparing talented students for the careers of tomorrow.”
“This project is a top priority to meet the needs of students in our growing computer science program and helps to strengthen the high-tech boom in Chicago. We are grateful to Governor Pritzker for his support,” said UIC Chancellor Michael D. Amiridis.
“The new CDRLC represents the future of higher education at UIC and is intended to be a welcoming space to promote innovation, collaboration, and discovery. We placed an intentional emphasis on the public spaces, research labs and collaborative areas to enhance the experience that each student will have, and it has been a pleasure collaborating with LMN Architects and Booth Hansen,” said Peter Nelson, Dean, UIC College of Engineering. “Students at UIC will have a new building on campus where they can unleash their curiosity and enjoy a space that is focused on learning, research and teamwork.”
The CDRLC is the third recent academic building to be built on the east campus originally designed by Walter Netsch in 1965. The building will be delivered on an accelerated schedule to meet the demands of the department, doubling its capacity by 2023. It will create a hub for both engineering and computer science that includes research areas comprised of faculty offices, collaboration areas, dry lab and specialty lab; administrative and student affairs office spaces; collaborative teaching and learning spaces for undergraduate and graduate students; an undergraduate learning and community center; and a flexible events room; all stitched together by a five-story daylit atrium.
“Together with the department, University, and CBD, our team of LMN and Booth Hansen have designed the building to become a welcoming hub, a building that embraces the old and presents an iconic new presence along Taylor Street,” says LMN Partner Stephen Van Dyck, AIA. “Throughout the design process, we have been inspired by the convergences that this project represents. At the heart of it all is the convergence of UIC’s mission and the region’s growing tech prominence. For so many in the region, this new building will symbolize opportunity.”
Creating a contemporary addition to this iconic brutalist campus, the building is functional, flexible, and respectful of the context. Located at a unique, prominent site on campus, the structure celebrates the natural setting and organic form of the Memorial Grove and establishes a new front door for technology in Chicago.
Together with the existing lab building, the new CDRLC creates a dramatic public atrium for social interactions with visual and physical connections to all floors. The refined precast concrete and terra cotta façade of the building are inspired by Netsch’s late modern architecture and respond to the site conditions and the Memorial Grove.
“The creation of the Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center at UIC is the type of investment Illinois needs to give our students a competitive advantage in the digital age. I’m fortunate to have an incredible research facility like UIC in my district, and I look forward to seeing the output of this building once complete,” stated State Representative Lakesia Collins.
“The announcement of the new Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center at UIC is crucial in order for the university to keep producing the incredible talent that it does. This state-of-the-art facility will further enhance the research taking place at UIC, while also welcoming prospective students to a unique learning environment,” said State Senator Patricia Van Pelt. “I look forward to seeing this project completed in such an expedited timeframe, doubling the capacity of the Computer & Science Department in just two years,” added Van Pelt.
David Mann, Booth Hansen Principal, Comments: “The new building will be located adjacent to one of the original Netsch buildings, near other College of Engineering facilities and Memorial Grove. This unique site allows for an innovative design that is inspired by the context, materiality, and qualities of precast concrete material. The project breaks free from the rigid orthogonal character of the campus with a more organic connected form that reframes this edge of campus and the Grove.”
Building on UIC’s successes with geo-thermal energy resources, the project will include a substantial new geo-thermal farm in the Memorial Grove, and the building has been designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. Reflecting a complex organization of requirements, the building will prompt students to cross paths with one another and enhance intellectual exchange. The atrium will be porous and dynamic with connections to the campus and the community, honoring the past and looking to the future.
Booth Hansen has collaborated with many academic institutions in the Midwest over the last 40 years. Those colleges and universities include the University of Illinois Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, Columbia College, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
LMN Architects is a leader in the design of higher education facilities across the United States. Other completed projects include the Bill & Melinda Gates Center for Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington; the Voxman Music Building at the University of Iowa in Iowa City; the Anteater Learning Pavilion at the University of California, Irvine; and the Huntsman School of Business Addition at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.

Pieper Lewis, Iowa Trafficking Victim, Back In Custody After Escape
By Yvonne Kalpakis, Loyola University New Orleans Class of 2023
November 14, 2022
After escaping from the residential correctional facility where she was serving probation, Pieper Lewis, an Iowa teen and victim of sex trafficking who killed a man she said repeatedly raped her, was taken into custody. Lewis admitted to willful harm and voluntary manslaughter in the 2020 slaying of 37-year-old Zachary Brooks. At the time, Lewis was only fifteen. On May 31, 2020, the person Lewis shared a house with attacked her with a knife and forced her to go to Brooks' apartment, where she said she was forced to drink vodka under pressure before passing out. She alleged that she once found Brooks raping her when she awoke. In the plea agreement, Lewis stated that Brooks was “overcome with rage” over having raped her once more when she “immediately seized the knife off his bedside and began stabbing him” when he went to sleep.
According to the probation violation complaint, someone unlocked a door at Fresh Start on Friday, setting off an alarm and alerting the on-call residential officer. The report states that the officer then saw Lewis leave the area out said door. According to the report, Lewis' GPS monitor was allegedly removed at some point that day. Since Lewis has been taken back into custody, it was asked that her deferred judgment be revoked and that her “original sentence be imposed” in the probation report.

Pieper Lewis Back In Custody After Escape
By Yvonne Kalpakis, Loyola University New Orleans Class of 2023
November 11, 2022
Pieper Lewis, an Iowa girl and sex trafficking victim who killed a man she said repeatedly raped her, is back in custody after escaping from the residential correctional facility where she was serving probation[1]. Lewis plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and willful injury in the 2020 killing of 37-year-old Zachary Brooks[1]. She was fifteen at the time[1].
Lewis received a deferred judgment from Polk County Judge David M. Porter and was sentenced to five years of probation at the Fresh Start Women's Center in Des Moines[2]. Before being sentenced, Lewis might have received a 20-year sentence[2].
Lewis was found in Des Moines and taken back into custody Tuesday, the Iowa Department of Corrections said in a statement[1]. The teenager is being held at the Polk County Jail, said Lt. Ryan Evans of the sheriff’s office, who told CNN she was expected to have a future court date for violating her probation[1].
The probation violation complaint states that on Friday, someone unlocked a door at Fresh Start, activating an alarm and informing the on-duty residential officer[2]. According to the report, the officer then witnessed Lewis leaving the premises[2]. Lewis' GPS monitor was allegedly taken off at some point that day, based on the report[2]. Lewis’ arrest was covered by a warrant[2]. In the probation report, it was requested that her probation be withdrawn and that her first sentence be carried out[2].
Evans told CNN that when she left, authorities submitted a “probation violation report” “recommending revocation of her probation” and asking for an arrest warrant[1].
After admitting responsibility in Brooks’ murder, Lewis moved in at the Fresh Start Women's Center, claiming in her plea deal that Brooks had repeatedly raped her[1].
Polk County District Judge David Porter issued a deferred judgment in September, which indicated that the plea could be vacated if she successfully served her probationary term in the residential correctional facility[1].The judge noted that in accordance with Iowa law, the court also had to compel Lewis to pay Brooks’ family a $150,000 restitution charge[1]. She shall also perform 200 hours of community service and pay more than $4,000 in civil penalties, according to his decision[1].
Lewis described for the court in the plea deal the sequence of occurrences she claimed led up to the murder, starting with her leaving her family because of what she claimed was an oppressive atmosphere[1]. She eventually found refuge with a man who, according to her, forced her to have sex with other men in exchange for money and trafficked her[1]. Lewis said in her agreement that Brooks was one of those individuals and that she had been repeatedly abused, even while she was unconscious[1].
On May 31, 2020, the person Lewis shared a residence with attacked her with a knife and coerced her into going to Brooks’ flat, where she said she was made to drink vodka under duress before passing out[1]. She claimed that she once woke up to discover Brooks raping her[1].
In the plea deal, Lewis claimed that when Brooks fell asleep, she “immediately took the knife from his nightstand and began stabbing him” because she was “overcome with wrath” over the fact that he had raped her once more[1].
When the judge questioned Lewis about the situation, she answered, “I took a person’s life. My intentions that day were not to just to go out and take somebody’s life. In my mind I felt that I wasn’t safe and I felt that I was in danger, which resulted in the acts. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that a crime was committed[3].”
The deferred judgment pleased Lewis' counsel, but advocates for sexual assault victims expressed concern about Lewis’ ability to fulfill the term due to the severity of her trauma[1].
Nick Crawford, spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Corrections issued a statement saying, “We would want to thank law enforcement and members of Iowa's 5th Judicial District for their efforts to safely bring Ms. Lewis back into custody[2].” The Polk County Criminal Courts Building will host a preliminary hearing on November 18 at 8 a.m. in Lewis' misdemeanor escape charge[2]. The same day at 9 a.m., a hearing about her homicide probation will be held[2].
They also emphasized how similar her case was to other recent incidents in the US in which juveniles, frequently people of color, were punished or found guilty for killing their sex offender or assaulter[1]. Her situation remains unclear now that Lewis has custody again[3]. In the probation report, it was requested that her deferred judgment be canceled and that her “original sentence be imposed[3].”

Czech Republic: Czech Health Minister Roman Prymula has refused calls from the country's prime minister to resign, after being pictured by a tabloid newspaper coming out of a restaurant late at night - despite all such establishments being closed. The affair has thrown the country deep into political crisis, and public confidence in government restrictions has been left in tatters. There was already considerable public grumbling at the latest restrictions, which include closing all pubs and restaurants. So when the man who thought up those rules was caught by a tabloid photographer emerging from a restaurant and without a mask, it appeared his days – perhaps hours – were numbered. However, he now says he was at a meeting in a private room in the building that also houses the restaurant, and that he put on his mask as soon as he got to his car. The country now finds itself in an unedifying and toxic political struggle – right in the middle of the worst health crisis it has ever seen.
Kenya: Kenya has reported a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases, with more than 1,000 people confirmed to have contracted coronavirus on Thursday. This is the highest number of single-day cases to be recorded in the country since the first case was reported on 13 March. Critics say the rise in cases is a result of people not adhering to safety measures in open spaces after President Uhuru Kenyatta relaxed restrictions three weeks ago. The health ministry is holding talks with the management of about 20 hotels that will be converted into isolation facilities to ease off pressure in hospitals. Some hospitals are said to have started recording a surge in admissions. Daniel Yumbya, the chief executive of the Medical Pharmacists and Dentists Council, said the country has a total of 18,443 isolation beds - which is not enough. "We’re now back to negotiating with private hotels to charge the bare minimum for patients in isolation. We do not want hospitals to be overwhelmed," Yumbya told journalists on Thursday.
