Progressive Web App vs Native App
PWAs vs Native Apps the door to more possibilities for creating rich experiences on mobile
progressive web apps
Progressive web apps (PWAs) have changed our perception about web applications. Progressive Web Apps combine the best of the web and the best of apps.
They load quickly, even on flaky networks, can re-engage with users by sending web push notifications, have an icon on the home screen, and load as top-level, full screen experiences. In this video,
Sam Dutton explains the what, why, and how of Progressive Web Apps, and works through code examples.
youtube
Thanks to several recently standardized features in JavaScript and web browsers the door has opened to more possibilities for creating rich experiences on mobile devices.  Let’s do a brief comparison between Native Apps, Traditional Web Apps, and PWAs
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs)
Progressive web apps have effectively reduced the steps between the discovery of an app and getting it on the home screen, thereby eliminating the friction of getting the app installed on your device. Another win for PWAs is that native apps are only available via Play Store/App Store. The reason behind the success of these stores is that users have no other choice in how they can find and install native apps.
PWAs are also defined by the following features:
Low friction of distribution — PWA updates are instant! All the users will get the prompt instantly and simultaneously!
Just like a traditional web app, PWAs will also have limited access to the device’s features.
A major disadvantage of PWAs is that iOS is yet to provide support to PWAs. But developers at Apple seem to have started working on providing the support.
PWAs are Progressive — These apps work for every user, regardless of the browser that you are using or even where you are situated in the world! So whether you are using Chrome or Opera or whether you are living in India, UK or even North Korea, it doesn’t matter! Progressive Web Apps will work just as well because they’re built with progressive enhancement as a core tenet.
Responsive — Progressive Web Apps will fit any device! Be it a desktop, a mobile, a tablet, or even something that hasn’t been created yet!
Web Apps that don’t depend on connectivity — With the help of service workers, Progressive Web Apps can even work on low-quality networks, or even offline!
App-like feel — Progressive Web Apps feel just like an app. They have app-style interactions and navigation.
Fresh — Thanks to service workers, your Progressive Web App will always be up-to-date with the latest updates!
Safe — Progressive Web Apps are always served via HTTPS, ensuring that no-one without proper authorization can tamper with your app.
Discoverable — According to the W3C manifest, Progressive Web Apps are classed as apps. It easier to find a Progressive Web App thanks to service worker registration scope that allows search engines to easily find them.
User Engagement — PWA features like Push Notifications make user engagement very easy!
Installation — Users can “keep” the most useful PWAs on their home screen without the hassle of app stores.
Linkable — PWAs can be easily shared via URL and do not require complex installation.

Progressive Web Apps are user experiences that have the reach of the web, and are:
Reliable- Load instantly
Fast- Respond quickly to user interactions with silky smooth animations and no janky scrolling.
Engaging- Feel like a natural app on the device, with an immersive user experience.
Native Apps
A native mobile app is a smartphone app that is coded in a programming language like Objective-C for iOS or Java for Android operating systems.
Native apps have the following features:
Fast performance and a high degree of reliability.
Complete access to phone’s hardware.
Native apps can even modify system settings.
Native apps can even access phone’s various devices and features, such as the camera and address book. It can also use the phone’s telephony features to send messages or to make calls.
Native apps have slower iterations. What this means is that it takes a while for updates to be available to users. This is because Native Apps are usually found in app stores, so any update sent by the developer has to go through the store’s regulation before it is made available to the public.
Traditional Web Apps
Traditional Web Apps are apps that have the following features:
Real-Time Delivery — Depending on the speed of your internet, the web app will be instantly delivered to you.
Web apps are built using standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Limited access to device’s features. So while your app may be able to access features like camera or location services, it won’t have access to your mobile’s telephony features.
Web apps depend on internet connectivity. Without a proper connection, all that you would be able to do is play with the Chrome Dinosaur.
You cannot install the web app on your device.
Any update will be instantly delivered to all the users. Unlike native apps, web apps don’t have to bother with any kind of app store restrictions.
With progressive web apps, it’s truly possible to deliver an intuitive web experience on a mobile device, provided you avoid some common mistakes, use native UI, leverage the new APIs shipped by Google, and test your apps with the available tools.
Avoid common UX mistakes that can ruin your PWA
Designing PWAs is closer to designing a native mobile app than a conventional, responsive web app. Therefore, you need to make sure you don't fall into some of the pitfalls that conventional web designs fall into when they're redesigned for mobile.
Validate your apps with Lighthouse
[caption id="attachment_726" align="aligncenter" width="1079"] seotv google lighthouse[/caption]
Google has launched an open-source performance management tool called Lighthouse that can run as a Chrome extension or as a Node module. You audit your web app or any web page with Lighthouse and have it generate a report on the performance of the page. Moreover, you can get a reference doc for each audit describing why the audit is important and how to fix the failing audits.

It’s a dream come to true for every developer far and wide to be a piece of world’s most remarkable trade conference sorted out by two powerful tech goliaths: Google and Apple. With the closure of the current year’s outstanding tech meetings, we are almost there to crown the untold winner and draw a line between the timeless battle of WWDC and GOOGLE I/O. Over a thousand attendees, a vast amphitheater, and power-packed performance by industries’ veteran nerds at both end kicked off the shows brilliantly.

Turning our dreams of the future into Virtual Reality, with Artificial Intelligence: The Google i/o 2016
Perfect weather. Perfect location. If anyone has ever dreamt of the perfect rock concert experience, it was on display. But here’s how much times have changed; the performers weren’t actually rockstars. In fact, they weren’t even professional musicians. Just the most elite bunch of nerds on the planet, all gathered in one place.
Tumblr media
There are very few companies that can engender the kind of excitement that Google can. But, in all  fairness, there are so few companies with the power to define our future all by themselves.
There were so many features and announcements over the three days that we couldn’t possibly keep up with them all. But we did hand pick a few highlights and put them together for you.
Google are drawing the line at the end of the mobile moment and the start of the VR and AI transcendence.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a Google Keynote where Android wasn’t the showstopper. This developer conference was more about looking at the future of devices and the turn they would take in the near future. While this is in no way to say that we will never again see another revolutionary smartphone, the possibilities seem on the down low. On the other hand, VR and AI are the new kids on the block; showing immense promise and going where no man (or machine) has gone before.
The real major product for Google (at the moment) is Google Assistant.
Google is extremely ambitious in it’s efforts to spread the use of Google Assistant across the consumer space. With Allo, Google gets another peak at your personal lives (in addition to going through your mail and queries) and makes personalised suggestions based on your chat. Restaurant suggestions, bookings, calendar appointments, reminders and much, much more can be now be done without ever having to leave the chat app. It’s much the same with Google Home; the Google Assistant is what takes this device to a whole other level when compared to the Amazon Echo.
Google is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else on VR and AI.
Google’s major products have already been rebuilt to accommodate, what they perceive, is the future trend. The Play Store, YouTube, Google Maps, Street View etc. are all VR ready. Add to this the fact that, with Day Dream, Google will be developing the foundations for both mobile-integrated and stand-alone VR and you have a combination much like the accession of Android we have seen over the last few years. It’s much the same story with AI; Google Assistant is the singular juggernaut voice assistant for the masses. It is constantly evolving and learning and, in the process, advancing itself almost embarrassingly ahead of all it’s contemporaries.
Project Ara is alive and well.
Tumblr media
It’s finally showing signs of progress; we blogged about the Project Ara on our series about modular smartphones and we’re excited about what we’ve got to see. While it is true that the time for delivery to customers is delayed, Google has promised developer units by this fall. The concept of modular smartphones, not online VR and AI, has lacked leadership from a global player with LG being the only mainstream manufacturer working on an extremely scaled down concept. Google’s entry in to the modular space might just be what the world has been waiting for. I, especially, can’t wait for customisable hardware.
If you haven’t read our blogs on modular smartphones and Project Ara, you can find it at the following link:
Do you agree with Google that we are nearing the end of the mobile journey? Or do you believe that the smartphone has a few good years left? Let us know.
Also check out the podcast on a new channel titled Urban Chatter for the first edition of the Tech Talk where we talk about the Google I/O, Apple, Motorola and so much more. You can find the link to that here:

Here’s wishing you a great week ahead.
