any physical pain io's experienced has nothing on the emotional pain that they felt when col betrayed them. to know that your son, the boy you raised and loved wanted you dead? that he killed the man you loved, his own father, in the attempt? that he would so willingly rip apart an entire life and family out of ambition? io was disoriented by it for a long, long time. I still think they are. they've never had a chance to truly grieve the son they lost that day, because he's still alive.

#⌜❝ 𝙲𝙾𝙻 𝚂𝙰𝙻𝚅𝙸𝙴𝙽𝚄𝚂. how did we get so dark? ❞ ⌟#I'm just.... thinking #no one else alive except for latona knows what col was like as a child #io knew him as happy and curious and loveable #io connected to col before they connected to lucius or latona bc he had all the innocence and childhood they never had #they taught him how to use his magic #they picked up shells on the beach with him. poked at bugs. turned over rocks and stones together #they tried to get back from traveling when they /said/ they would bc they knew col hated that lucius was gone so often or came back late #and didn't want to leave him alone #io let him be a kid in a situation where otherwise he absolutely would have grown up far too fast in #and to do all that? only to be tossed aside bc of /ambition?/#beyond heartbreaking #their parents gave them trust issues and col just reinforced them
