sewing other things
OK so. I have talked about the Loftus Bralette so much on here that one could be forgiven for chuckling gently when i said I should sew other things. But I do actually have several other projects I've been wanting to work on. And i have actually cut some of them out.
Also when I was last at the farm my niece brought me some of her t-shirts and said "I really like this one can we cut it apart and re-sew it bigger so I can still wear it", and I remembered that her BFF's mom, who works at the farm twice a week doing the books and managing store inventory, owns a serger she didn't know how to thread, so I texted her to ask if I could borrow it and indeed she had accidentally unthreaded it and there was a stuck lever and needed me to fix it anyway, and maybe I mentioned that on here but I did actually make my niece a couple of tunics while I was last at the farm. Including hand-sewing a whole bunch of details on the last one while the family was driving on a road trip one weekend.
So I brought all that stuff home with me and was hoping to get to work on it this week. All I've sewn has been the bralettes but I still have today. We'll see what I can get done.
I measured Farmkid and she's ten years old so her shape isn't the same as that of an adult woman, but she's five feet two and like 130 lbs, and some of her measurements put her in a women's size 12. So. She expressed interest in a garment I wear frequently, a Studio Tunic from Sew Liberated. I printed off the pattern in a size 12 and have assembled it, but I'm stuck deciding what fabric to use for her. I should decide that today. She's ten, her favorite color is ostensibly yellow but she mostly wears pinks and purples, she's a grubby kid who wipes her hands on her shirt and always winds up with stains on the belly of her shirt still, and she wants this tunic I think largely so she can cram her tablet into the pocket and go climb trees while listening to audiobooks on speaker. So I want a bright color but not too pale, and I want a tough fabric but not unbreathable, and I'm just. Deciding, still.
Probably what I should do is use some undyed fabric I own, and then bring my supplies and let her tie-dye it. I have a couple other things I could tie-dye, or will by then. That would be a fun bonding activity. I don't know if I'll have time to do it this trip though. So maybe I'll postpone the project and ask her for help once she's on summer break. (Good luck catching her, kids these days have so many summer camps.) As a bonus I bet I could loop her BFF and BFF's Mom in on the tie-dyeing, they're both into that shit.
Hell we could do ice-dyeing, the farm has a 1000-lb ice machine that is very frequently turned on (weekly for the market, biweekly for chicken processing-- there could be ice available at pretty much any time lol).
So anyway. I know she wants me to make a tunic out of a trio of large-print cat shirts she's outgrown, and she wants to wear it for her 5th grade moving up day ceremony, and I looked at it while I was home but I haven't done it yet. I need to get my shit together.
What I might do is print off a size 12 version of the t-shirt pattern I own, it's just that it's designed for busty women because I'm a busty woman, and she's Not, yet (oh, she will be. soon. but not yet.) so I have to kind of. Well, I own a pattern for a swing tunic that's close to what she wants actually. Oh, I should just print that one off. (The joy of the Cashmerette Club subscription patterns is that you get all the sizes, 0-30, and I've now made a couple of them for smaller friends, because like. I mean I own the pattern! PDF patterns are so great because you can reprint them in the smaller size instead of trying to trace it off. I never ever got the hang of tissue paper patterns.)
Yeah here this one, the Wexford Top/Dress, would be easy enough to kind of carve out the bust curve a little and make it fit a kid, because it's not meant to be that fitted. I'll just sort of use that as a general guideline and then make the cut-out-and-patchworked t-shirts fit into that approximate silhouette. The way I made the other tunics for her, I just used a shirt whose neck and shoulders still mostly fit her. But these cat shirts she's thoroughly outgrown, so making a new neck/shoulder area would be best.
Orrrrrr.... I could use one of the zillion old t-shirts of mine that I've saved to cut up. The neck/shoulders of a fully adult-sized garment are no longer too big for her. That's easier.
I also have a bunch of garments I want to make for myself, as I don't seem to buy clothes much anymore (I can't bring myself to pay $40 for a dress off the clearance rack that won't fit me and will mostly be polyester and won't be that interesting and will pill the first time I wash it). The Club's latest pattern is a skort/shorts/skirt dealie, and I need more shorts all the time-- I've largely given up on underpants and just wear boxer-briefs or anti-chafe shorts and I just don't see the point now of wearing a pair of panties and then shorts over the top under my skirt. Like. Just wear the shorts! So being able to choose the materials and print and look of that would be pretty great. And the Cashmerette one is inseam-less, like my favorite anti-chafe shorts are.
So I have cut out a pair of just the shorts in a clearance cotton mesh from Dharmatrading, and I even have the correct elastic for the waistband, so that kind of rules. I will sew those up as soon as I get a chance. I would like to make several skorts as well, probably from synthetic ponte or something, but my ideal would be to get some decent merino/nylon jersey and do a few from that. You never see merino skorts but I would wear the shit out of those.
I also have a lovely underpants pattern from the Club from ages ago, and while I rarely wear underpants of that style anymore, I would like having some cute matchy ones to go with the bralettes. Also, I have a shitton of foldover elastic, and I suspect I could use foldover elastic in some of the bralettes I want to make, so I want to get proficient in its use, and there are directions for applying it in the underpants directions, and it seems like a good way to practice. So I cut a muslin of those from the same cotton mesh as the shorts, and just have to sew the pieces together.
I also want to make myself more pretty dresses, and I have parts of a new Studio Tunic for myself already cut out, but not the rest.
And I recently made myself the button-up shirt from the Club, I know I posted about it on here. And I wanted to immediately make myself several more, and I got out some fabric and prepared it and cut out one pattern piece and then ran out of time. So yesterday I finally cut out the rest of the shirt from this fabric, a print from Mood covered in tiny dinosaurs. So I have that all ready to go in a plastic baggie too, just waiting for me to have time to sit and sew it. (Once I do that, I would really like to make myself a dress version of it from the cool green not-quite-seersucker I got from that remnant bolt at Promenade Fabrics in New Orleans.)
AND. i also have resolved to make my BFF, the one in Rochester who I lived with for a bit in the pandemic, with the little kids-- MM-- I am going to make her a sloper, before I see her next weekend, or maybe while I see her next weekend if i don't get to it in time argh, and I am going to at least try that on her and figure out approximately what shape she is so that I can put together a master pattern for her to make herself dresses from. I took her measurements ages ago, and she's a 14CD bust, a 16 waist, and an 8 hip in Cashmerette's sizing, and so I think just making a sloper with those sizes all graded together will be a huge start. And then we can mildly tweak the fit for her frame, and-- the thing is, she's always buying custom dresses on Etsy because what she wants is very specific and not usually available in stores, and then the dresses come and don't fit her so she has to get them tailored, and then they were just made of cheap quilting cotton from Joann's so they wear out after she washes them a few times, and she's had to add on pockets anyway because they didn't have them.
So I just feel like if I could get her a paper master pattern that fit her... heck i could even just make her dresses if *I* had the pattern. It would be easier and more efficient. I could do the basic construction and then turn over the pockets and embellishments to her, which is what she does anyway. So that's my goal there, and we'll see if I can reach it.
Anyway. If only I didn't have to work at all and could just sew all the time. I am not the first person to say this, LOL.
I have a lot of irons in the fire but at the moment am trapped under a cat so those irons are not going anywhere.

Brave Little Mouse: Important information
What is this?
This blog is a collaborative roleplaying project where I will be using the tumblr poll system, along with the rules of Mausritter (TTRPG by Isaac Williams) to run an adventure where you, the audience, will play the role of a brave little mouse adventurer. My aim is to have a lot of fun, as well as to indtroduce more people to my favorite indie TTRPG of all time.
How does it work?
For the most part, if you've ever participated in a choose-your-own-adventure style game on the internet, the setup here will look familiar:
I will make a post describing the current situation.
The audience will be able to propose actions for the player character by leaving a reply on the post.
I will grab the first 3-5 actions proposed by the audience and make them into a poll which will be set to close after 24 hours.
After the poll has finished, the most voted action will be the one the character will take.
However, what makes this game different from other choose-your-own-adventure games is that whenever it comes to combat, travel, exploration, or deciding the outcome of risky actions, we will be relying on Mausritter's ruleset.
You can grab a PDF of Mausritter here. However, I will also provide a summary of the most important rules under the Read More cut.
Important points about Mausritter:
These are some importants parts of Mausritter's game design that I consider worth mentioning before summarizing the rules.
Combat in Mausritter is pretty dangerous and lethal, especially since you'll be controlling a single squishy mouse. The fact that all atttacks hit automatically and limited HP numbers means that whenever you enter combat you WILL get hurt. Usually fighting should be reserved as a last option, it's better to try and avoid or circumvent violent encounters whenever possible.
Inventory management is extremely important in Mausritter, for a number of factors:
You have very limited inventory space.
Unlike other games, characters are more defined by the inventory they carry than by their class or stats.
Your XP is directly tied to the amount of treasure you manage to carry back from dangerous places to mouse settlements.
Negative conditions take up an inventory slot.
This means that deciding what to leave, what to take, and what to carry is an essential decision in this game.
Rules sumary:
Stats:
You have three stats:
STR represents strength and resiliance
DEX represents speed and agility
WIL represents strength of will and Charisma
Saves:
Wheneever you attempt something risky or with an uncertain outcome, you will need to do a save against STR, DEX, or WIL to succeed or avoid negative consequences. To succeed a save, you will need to roll equal or lower than the corresponding stat on a d20.
E.g. if your STR is 8, you will need to roll 1-8 on a d20 to succeed on a STR save.
Advantage: Roll twice and take the lowest result.
Disadvantage: Roll twice and take the highest result.
Inventory:
You have two paw slots (for items carried or wielded on your paws), two body slots (for armor or items strapped to your body) and six pack slots (for items carrried in your backpack). During combat, an item on a body slot can be moved to a paw slot for free, while and item in a pack slot takes an action to retrieve.
Pips are the standard currency of the mouse kingdoms. You can carry up to 250 pips on your pockets. Over that, you can carry up to 250 in an inventory slot.
Each negative condition takes up an inventory slot until it's cleared.
If you're overencumbered, you have disadvantage on all saves.
Usage:
Most items have a number of usage slots. When all three usage slots are filled, the item is destroyed or depleted. Usage dots on weapons and armor can be cleared for 10% of the item's original value.
For weapons and armor, after combat roll 1d6 for each item that was used. A result of 4-6 means you need to mark an usage dot.
For rations, a dot is marked after every meal.
For torches and lanters, a dot is marked every six turns.
For every other item, a dots are markeed when the item is used in a way that could break or deplete it.
Combat:
Initiative: If you take your enemies by surprise, you act first. If not, roll a DEX save. If you succeed, you act before them, if you fail you act after them.
All attacks hit automatically, only roll for damage. Substract armor from all damage taken.
HP represents how much damage you can shrug off before you start getting hurt for real. After HP is depleted, any damage taken is dealt to your STR. Every time damage is dealt to your STR, you must succeed a STR save to avoid critical damage.
Critical damage: Take the Injured condition and become incapacitated until tended to by an ally. If you spend 6 turns incapacitated, you die.
If STR reaches 0, you die.
Time:
Round: Unit of time used during combat, it's a few seconds long.
Turn: Unit of time using during dungeon exploration. There are six turns in an hour. Actions such as exploring a room, moving to a different room, or resolving a combat encounter are assumed to take one turn.
Watch: Unit of time used during overland travel. There are four watches in a day.
Rest:
Short rest: Takes one turn, restored 1d6+1 HP.
Long rest: Takes a watch and requires a meal. Restores all HP. If HP is full, restores d6 points of attribute damage.
Full rest: Takes a week of rest at a safe place, restores all HP and attributes and removes most negative conditions.
Travel:
The world is composed of 1-mile hexes. Each hex contains a landmark, which might contain a settlement or adventure site.
Traversing a hex takes a watch. Difficult terrain takes two watches to traverse.
Every day you must spend at least one watch resting, or gain an Exhausted condition, and consume a ration, or gain a Hungry condition.
You may spend one watch foraging to obtain 1d3 uses of rations.
For every watch you spend travelling under bad weather, you gain an Exhausted condition.
Advancement:
You gain 1XP for every pip-worth of treasure you bring from a dangerous place to a mouse settlement.
You can gain additional XP by selflessly spending pips on improving a settlement. You gain 1XP for every 10 pips spent this way.
Magic:
Spells are physical items, you must have a spell in your paw to be able to cast it.
When casting a spell, choose how much Power to cast it with, up to the number of unused usage dots on it.
Roll a number of d6 equal to the power you're casting the spell with. The spell's effect will vary based on the number of [DICE] rolled and the [SUM] of their results.
For every die that rolls a value of 4-6, mark a useage dot on the spell.
If you roll one or more 6s, you take d6 damage to WIL for every 6 rolled. Then make a WIL save, if you fail, take the Drained condition.
When a spell is depleted, there's a specific action that needs to be performed to recharge it.
Mausritter is property of Isaac Williams and Losing Games, I'm just summarizing the rules for the purposes of this blog game.

Heyyyy! I'm about to buckle down for a survival-focused D&D campaign. Now D&D isn't ideal for this but I'm stuck with it for the rest of the year, however I would LOVE to know if you have recs for survival-focused RPGs. Thinking heavy on food/resource management; tracking and foraging mechanics; less about the fighting and more about providing for the group. Any ideas?
THEME: Survival Games.
Hi friend! One genre that really knows how to replicate survival and resource management is Post-Apocalyptic games, which is why you’ll see a heavy emphasis on those kinds of games in this short list. You might also want to look into games in the OSR style, which encourages your players to keep stock of their inventory in the event that an item solves their problems better than combat ever will.
Rad Divers, by Oscar C. Tango.
Rad Divers is a game about building a sustainable city in a post apocalyptic world! Featuring a heavy focus on exploration and settlement management, this game is based off of Knave.
So go forth, and dive into the irradiated remains of the world that was!
Rad Divers requires your characters to keep track of multiple resources such as Security, Food, Water, Space, and Meds. Neglecting any one resource threatens to lead to turmoil within your settlement, and your crew must barter, scavenge, and ration their way to success. This is an OSR game, so your characters don’t have a lot of hit points to go around: cleverness will win out over brute force. The pdf layout isn’t anything to write home about, but the ideas within it are certainly worth a read.
Trespasser, Binary Star Games.
The Zone is an area that's been sealed off by a nation or group of nations due to its danger. It's filled with Anomalies, extremely dangerous areas where physical laws like gravity, magnetism, electricity, or chemistry can break down to lethal effect, as well as mutants and things considered impossible. But it also houses Artifacts: small objects that also defy physics, highly sought after by treasure seekers and scientists alike. And at the center is something even greater.
Like many, you have entered the Zone, but not legally. You are collectively known as Trespassers. Some inside are on their own, some in groups, some part of larger factions. But most want one thing: to reach the center and claim what it conceals.
Maybe you'll be the one to get there. Your Trespass begins now. Good luck.
This is a game about approaching the center of a dangerous Zone, uncovering its secrets, and either being defeated by it along the way or, worse, reaching its heart. You can play GM-less or with a GM, solo or with a group.
Trespasser is designed off of Breathless, a game system that slowly depletes at your resources in the form of whittling away at the size of your dice. You’ll start with a few skills at a d6, d8, and d10, but every time you use them, those skills will be reduced in dice size, until they all reach a d4. If you want to bring those skills back up, you’ll have to “catch your breath”, at which the GM is able to introduce a new obstacle or problem for your characters to deal with.
For more Breathless games, you can check out this collection, created by René-Pier Deshaies (the original author of Breathless.)
24XX Joyrider, by SageDaMage.
Inspired by Lisa: The Painful and Mad Max, this 2400 hack describes a post-apocalyptic world revolving around crazy vehicles and drug addicts wracked by the past. Including Cosmic Highway-esque vehicle rules as well as bartering rules inspired by The Dead are Coming, this TTRPG has everything you need to jump right into a gonzo hellscape such as this one.
Welcome to the Last Generation!
2400 games are usually only a few pages, and this game is no exception. However, the scramble for resources is replicated in the way your items are broken in order to prevent a more imminent physical threat. Your characters will also be responsible for maintaining and upgrading a vehicle, your home out on the wasteland. If you want a game about desperate survival in a world that wants to rip you apart, I recommend Joyrider.
Other games I’ve recommended in the past
Reclaim the Wild, by Eldritch Knight.
Numenera, by Monte Cook Games (specifically including crafting and community rules from Destiny).
