don't shit on them so much; you make people feel the species are useless everywhere

Fridays are Buflegrass days. I meet up with a group and work for a few hours in the Gates Pass area. Worked today near the”Mega Patch” which is a huge near hopeless area of Buflegrass. Decided to just clear out one small area around a Saguaro. At least if the patch catches fire this Saguaro could survive 🌵😁

Another Sketch from along the Camino de Santiago. This was the first first week of June and the red poppy fields were amazing! The approach to Castrojeriz I found particularly beautiful with the ancient castle on top of the hill. You can even walk up to the ruins on top of that hill, if you somehow have the energy after your day of walking.
There is also a lovely museum of sacred art at the Santa Maria del Manzano ( Saint Mary of the Apple!) which is the church in this painting. It was actually open at 8 AM in the morning when I slothfully left my Albergue.
Anybody know why the church is called “Saint Mary of the Apple?” Maybe there used to be orchards here…?
I’m back home now, but I’m still posting some paintings and sketches. All my oil paintings were done after I finished walking the Camino when I had a rental car to carry my equipment.

As always, make sure to practice foraging safety and don’t eat unless you’re 100% certain you identified the plant correctly.

Image description:
Anti lawn, does this mean our lawns should look like this (overgrown chaotic garden with bugs
No!!! When a habitat is destroyed, nature has a way of healing itself, it's called succession
The first kinds of plants to start growing in adevastated area are called Pioneer Species. Pioneer species are tough, thrive in harshconditions, and reproduce fast, so theycompletely take over...Wait that sounds like WEEDS!!!
("*not the same as invasiveplants-invasive plantsare non-native speciesthat displace and harmnative ones.)
Exactly right! In nature, "weed" is a job. After a disaster, tough, aggressive plants takeover an area to shelter and attract wildlife, stop erosion, and get the place ready for other plants. When flowers, shrubs and trees start growing, the pioneer species start to fade
A "natural" yard doesn't mean "weeds"-it meansthe niches where weeds fit are shaded out by trees and shrubs or filled with other plants. This yard (plain green grass) is a habitat where almost all life has been wiped out. There is so much sunlight to go around that all the most aggressive plants try to snap it up. The only time in nature that there would be so few plant species, is after an extreme disaster. So, tough, aggressive "weeds" rush into start the healing process
You may think that this picture (area full of brambles and sharp thorns) shows what a "natural yard" would look like but it's actually a habitat trying to RECOVER from being a lawn. This picture shows an early stage of the natural process of succession. This stage is messy and weedy because no other plants have shown up yet to take up space and sunlight. This takes so much time andmoney to maintain because it's so empty. The more biodiversity you wipe out, the harder youhave to fight nature
Replacing part of your lawn with a better alternative means looking at the kind of habitat it would become in a later stage ofsuccession and imitating it.If the place you live used to beforest, plant some trees native toyour area. The more shade, the less easily the ground will get overgrown, because there is more competition for sunlight. A small grove of trees makes its own free mulch. Fill up space you don't use with native bushes, shrubs and flowers, lettingthem mix together and crowd in.
Yes = wildflowers which are great for pollinators filling all the space.
No = spread out bushes that only cover a small portion of the ground and will take years to grow
Don't get rid of any plants without identifying them. Not all plants that pop up in your yard are "weeds," and not all "weeds" are bad. A lot of "weeds" that grow in lawns are actually baby trees!
Eg. Oak, sycamore, redbud or poplar tulip

I...tried to make a meme and got carried away and made A Thing that is like partially unfinished because i spent like 3 hours on it and then got tired.
I think this is mostly scientifically accurate but truth be told, there seems to be relatively little research on succession in regards to lawns specifically (as opposed to like, pastures). I am not exaggerating how bad they are for biodiversity though—recent research has referred to them as "ecological deserts."
Feel free to repost, no need for credit

Field journal 📔
ID: Crotalaria pallida
Common name: Streaked rattlepod, smooth rattlebox
🚨 Invasive
💩
While we do have a few native Crotalaria species in Florida, this isn’t one of them. It seems that this species was introduced to the southeast US as a green manure crop, which led me down a research rabbit hole.
💩
I thought manure always referred to animal poop, but it turns out there are three types of manure. I knew about brown manure (poop), and I know what compost is (though I didn’t know it was technically classified as manure). But with no real gardening or farming background, the concept of green manure was completely new to me.
💩
Green manure refers to plants that are grown specifically to be plowed back into the soil while they’re still alive. Usually legumes (such as C. pallida) are used, because they’re nitrogen fixers, which means that they will release nitrogen to fertilize the soil.
💩
Pretty cool plant science, but if native legumes had been used, then we wouldn’t be having a problem with this particular species competing with the plants that were here first.

This little rogue cutie is called Bellis Perennis or Common Daisy. They planted them at the park in front of our little chateau. They needed a lawn that could withstand rain and heavy trampling that would grow faster than grass. Seeing has these tiny flowers can grow pretty fast and can be a little invasive they picked these for all of the grass areas. It looks amazing and is always green with flowers all year long, even after rainy soccer games, rainy events, and rainy parties (it rains a lot). This lawn gas really held up and the kids love picking the flowers too.

Beautiful day on the East side yesterday even with intermittent showers, I was trying to zoom in on a couple of water falls by Mt. Waialeale on the drive home yesterday but they don’t show very well The grove of trees in the foreground are all Albizia trees which are pervasive and invasive trees on here on Kaua’i - they are pretty enough to look at it but the branches are very brittle and problematic especially along roadways during windstorms plus they spread and grow like weeds #waterfall #waterfalls #wailua #eastside #gardenisland #thegardenisland #kauai #kauaihawaii #kauaiswhy #kauailove #hawaii #cloudscape #rainyday #nature #landscape #country #countrylife #islandlife #luckywelivekauai #luckywelivehawaii #february #shotoniphone #offthebeatenpath #shotoniphone #lovewhereyoulive #invasiveplants (at Wailua Homesteads) https://www.instagram.com/p/Coknq41PMFJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

An update today! I have to pick up my meds from the pharmacy today, they can’t hold it any longer. Thankfully I’m able to stay another night where I am. But I will need further assistance.
I hate to tag yall again, happy pride month-if you’re able to share this and interact in any way to the videos and posts above, that would mean a lot. Or even drop a dollar, it would do wonders to help me extend my hotel stay past Monday.

🚫🌿✋Invasive Plant PSA! ✋🌿🚫⠀ ⠀ This is Mile-a-minute, also known as Asiatic Tearthumb (because it has tiny little hooks that will GET you). It is spread via birds eating the little blue berries and pooping the seeds elsewhere. It grows extremely quickly (as the name implies) and will cover and choke out other herbaceous plants, and climb anything it can get its hooks into. Luckily it is extremely distinctive, with near perfect triangles for leaves, defined ocreae, and the aforementioned blue berries. ⠀ If you see this plant--pull it up (with gloves)! (If you live in North America or outside it's native range.) Preferably early in the summer before it goes to seed and spreads more of itself! It is an annual, so it won't resprout, but you may need to come back and check that spot next year in the event it is in the seedbank (this one was!) and grows again.⠀ ⠀ Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have questions! <3⠀ ⠀ #invasiveplant #mileaminute #asiatictearthumb #killit #psa #nature #naturalresourcemanagement #virginiastateparks https://www.instagram.com/p/CQddJxmjwi7/?utm_medium=tumblr
