Younger Siblings Tournament Bracket Reveal

A few things I want to mention before I reveal the bracket (and make the post really long because all the matchups will be listed in text):

Seeding of fictional characters in tumblr polls is inherently subjective. I did try to make it so that more popular characters/media would (most likely) face off against each other in later rounds, but I may be overestimating or underestimating the popularity of some characters/media, especially ones I'm not familiar with. There are some round 1 matchups that are probably a closer match but none of them are between the strongest candidates... I think.

The more niche characters will probably get obliterated in the first round as per Squimbus' Law. This is a tumblr poll and I do fully expect more popular characters to sweep, but that doesn't mean you can't encourage your friends to give your niche faves a fighting chance.

Also there are some matchups I literally just thought would be funny. Please don't take this too seriously.

who or what was your biggest art inspiration? :0c

woof, difficult question!!! i never know how to answer this because my inspirations are wild and varied and not always very "coherent" but. i'll give it a go

i got my start drawing silly anime furries like a lot of people. i was massively inspired by the art of Furcadia, specifically the older stuff. back then it felt magical and specialised and more niche than i might see it anywhere else. it was really beautiful - dated now, considering the tendency towards furry art having bigger, more human eyes and more emphasised details (which i do lean into myself) but i'll let it speak for itself.

as a little 10-13 year old, this was formative. (thank you talzemir, and everyone else who created art (pixel and otherwise) for this game, including custom patch artists. there is not enough space in a tumblr post to go into how enamored i was with the visual worldbuilding and bright early-Windows colours and level of detail, especially leaving out the maps and items and walksprites, but i became who i was with Furcadia's support and the art still guides me a little. i still want to make species recogniseable, i don't want to draw everything like a slightly narrower or blunter puppy. you feel me. i want my art to be BROAD and i want species to look like their species. this is why.

(special mention goes to the community, but this isn't a post about that. just know that without Furc people to lean on, i might not be me today!!!)

i was also heavily influenced by peers on DeviantART. i won't post their old art and embarrass them here, but shoutout to my friends who i grew up with drawing pokemon OCs, pokemon mystery dungeon story comics (PMD also a huge influence), anime, invader zim, yet more furries, and the rest. i branched out into a lot of different silly cartoon and anime styles back then and without looking at what those peers were doing i might never have experimented at all. i can only imagine how narrow my scope would be without them. (hopefully those still in touch know who they are!! special shoutout to those i no longer speak with, i haven't forgotten them either. hope they're doing well. also hello Black Scythe Pack circa my Authenti era)

i also need to credit @zarla-s because i think literally everything on ashido.com and NPLU and especially-especially-especially seeing the Slalomicide music video Flash animation when i was a wee bairn did something to my brain. i'm not who i was before i watched that animation. i remember downloading and listening to the MP3 to-and-from school and self-inserting my own furry OC. i remember watching all of the other flash animations on ashido.com with a mad appetite, regardless of whether i understood or was aware of the source material for the fanworks. i remember my dad-and-his-friend-pirate-combo bootlegging Adobe Flash MX 2004 for me and becoming a monster who experimented all day in their room with animations because someday i wanted to tell a story like that with my furry, and it made me want to know movement and expression and camera angles. i cannot move on without bowing low at the Zarla shrine. to know Zarla is still going is to know there are unicorns yet. (i remember clicking the thin lines of the play button, because you didn't flood-fill and the outlines were the only pixels clickable to start the animation. I REMEMBER. and it was formative.)

um. Homestuck! the fanart and the contributing artists, too, but also just - the shortform simple shapes, the stylisation, the bright colours and stark contrast and silly levels. and the sort of wet "blotchy ink-splatter" pixel brushwork of that and Problem Sleuth.

all of this made me want to create something dynamic and silly. i wanted to be able to make something where people could attach to the characters no matter how silly they looked at first glance, and to make something big and wild and expressionistic(???) while simplifying things enough that my then-undiagnosed-ADHD brain could play with them and still have fun without it being work.

and then there's Justice League International (1987)(?)(onward).

believe me when i say i was wheezing on reading these. and wildly invested! i am still trying to push and push and push my art to be anything like the power-combo trio of Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire. everything from the composition and planning to the sketching to the beautiful inks made every single panel an absolute joy. for the first time reading comics, i wanted to slow down. i wanted to pick out every silly background detail in group shots, see where the inks emphasised shadow, notice why negative space was left and where and why. i wanted to do expressions this fucking funny.

i also give credit to the Blue Beetle comics from 2006/2009. i loved them, i studied them, i learned the alien language.

honestly my comics era was insane for my art development. i learned how limbs work back-and-forth from the camera, the basics of foreshortening, dynamic lighting, composition, contrast, inks, emphasis, i'm still trying to learn simplification and typesetting and speech bubbles and negative space and inked shadow.

plus credit to Batman: The Animated Series. obviously. and to the Batman Adventures comics where i learned the riddler was desperately gay. and shoutout to Ghibli. and to the artists behind movies like The Lion King. (i will not credit Disney as a company.)

and... now i'm somewhere very strange, i think! and i am having fun. and i like my art. so.

IM FOUND ONE OF THESE MEMES IN MY DRAFts! Im gonna rank my experiences in the major fandoms i’ve engaged with.

🩵 YUGIOH! - Second longest running fascination. Upside!! Made life long friends. DOWNSIDE!! Was my first go at online engagement and in those 10 years so much happened that I still can’t help but feel a little sour. …Though ygo back in the day wasn’t good at tag comments, so I didn’t even know those were a thing for years until I branched out. 5/10. But grows to a 7/10 because i’ve settled into a niche area with so few people that it’s now a silly little club. 💕

🧡 Dragon Ball/Z - GENUINE CHAOS. Started off slow but intensified hard cuz get who got involved while Super was airing??? (I didn’t watch it lol), so the discourse and fighting was at an all time high. I have no idea how I even survived this in retrospect. My slight association with people netted me troll asks and my liking of Yamcha also set me up for those. …and frequent art reposting, and quite a few bizarre interactions. Pretty sure my art and edits have circulated more in latin america than I even know. This was also pre-tumblr purge so the amount of nsfw that got thrown my way is… something. That said!! Made also really good friends 💕 and DB/Z probably desensitized me to longer form discussions. 5/10 for insanity, but 8/10 for good reception and VERY PEAK and generous humans.

I think dbz hardened me.

💚 Invader Zim- started off fun (mostly irl with my friendo from days of YGO), but quickly devolved into territory that tested my patience. WHY ON EARTH THIS SERIES’ CONSUMERS had such a huge morality high ground base is beyond me. It’s this fandoms fault I learned about certain modern day online discourse terms and what instilled an irrational posting fear for a year lol. Fun at first and there’s super creative and receptive folk (then those people got kicked out) and left the most insufferable beings imaginable. There’s no in between. Shoutout to all 3 friends made who are still peak. 3/10, if I ever finish any remaining projects or decide to bite the bullet and show completed work, i’m not engaging again. The base just skews somewhere I can’t handle. Which is crazy given the ABOVE contenders have, on paper, done so much more.

dbz hardened me but iz weakened me. Which is probably why i need the formers bootcamp back. Don’t think I’m as fearful now, but i’ll still be salty.

💜 Twisted Wonderland - this is a work in progress experience. Will require further evaluation if all of the above experiences haven’t set my standards. Will stay in my corner. So far it’s 6/10 in vibes (they’re much calmer than the last one), tho I question how much of the interest is from what i do vs. what I did for others. Haven’t shared a ton of opinions yet and god knows lol we don’t want that /s. Still recovering from the former making me wanna just not do much. Baby steps I suppose.

💙 - Sonic The Hedgehog: This is a cheat, I have never interacted with the fandom directly (purely by happenstance, so thankfully no traces exist), but I have been into this since I was a child with no issues. So by default this is the best one. 10/10, didn’t engage, but I do lurk. Though all the stuff I see on tweeter isn’t exactly anything out of the norm for fandoms in general to do, so it weirds me out that people rag on this one for just kinda talking amongst themselves about innocuous things.

“omg this fandom is arguing over QUILL length ughhh can they never be pleased [30 yt videos about this drop]” ngl, this just feels like par for the course junk fandoms do. It really feels no different from DBZ where people go ham about the art style changes and which one is better. Or stupid shit in IZ where they fight about comics vs movie vs show. Like??? The only major difference here is that StH has more people in it (by the millions).

So literally nothing these folk do or say strikes me as anything more serious than what other fandoms already do??? Its just more outsiders see it then churn out content and perpetuate something worse from what’s honestly….pretty tame stuff. Maybe it’s just twitter’s setup given that’s all folk talk about.

Yeah I've been in many over generalized fandoms through the years and I know how badly it hurts.

Despite how much I dislike the show I definitely understand that it is an extremely important series for the indie scene in general. I can't act like it isn't going to open doors for many other creatives in the world.

I can liken it to the Renaissance of teen horror in gaming that followed the wake that FNAF left behind.

Just because I strongly dislike something doesn't mean I can't understand why it's a hit. I knew it would be, it's practically designed to fill a very specific niche in content that didn't have a contemporary answer yet. That being an adult Invader Zim-esque show. (And south park and Broadway etcetc)

And as an ex-christian I definitely understand why it speaks to those of us with cross-shaped scars.

While I don't like Viv for many reasons, I have to respect that she's chasing her dream.

More than that, the reason I worded my post like I did is because I know that Hotel is a lot of kids first fandom. Everyone that's older in fandom remembers how special their first scene was/is. I'm not going to go out of my way to intentionally shit on a bunch of kids (and folks in general) for their hyperfixation.

And if you're wondering about Sizz-Lorr and Dwicky, well. Once upon a time I saw fanart involving Dwicky ending up on Foodcourtia and just really hitting it off with Sizz-Lorr, and ya know. I like that, I'm here for that, the big guy needs some love and someone who at least knows who Zim is so they can mock him together

Also does anyone else ship Zim and Professor Membrane because I can see a LOT of potential there as well, I've always imagined that Membrane is one of the few humans Zim genuinely respects and admires, he's so tall and nice and intelligent and Zim enjoys just talking to him about science stuff because FINALLY a human who won't just stare at him like a deer in the headlights when he talks about the practical applications of quantum entanglement.

I've picked up a few followers here over the past couple of days (a little unexpected, considering how niche this is) and I'd just like to say thank you and welcome!

I've really enjoyed the replies on some of the posts, and people sharing their stories about items they've owned/wanted. I'd also like to say that I wholly encourage and would love for you guys to submit your own Invader Zim paraphernalia! Whether it's something you own, used to own, or just something you saw in a Hot Topic once.

I'm mostly interested in pre-Enter the Florpus stuff, but I don't mind making exceptions for interesting pieces. Please only officially liscened merch, nothing fan-made. And only Invader Zim- not other Nicktoons, though it's completely alright if it's a mix and Zim is in there. If possible, try to include a date of manufacture with your submission, but alright if you don't know it. Other than that, no stipulations! I'd love to see what you guys have.

decided to make a list of fandoms i'm a (small) part of that i have experience w posting in and follow artists in, and the types of things i see get the most notes or responses to

Yogscast: The fandom is intensely large, and the ratio of old fan to lore fan to true fan is incredibly unbalanced. I’d say 80% old fans who enjoy fanart or fan news and nothing more, 11% true fans who actively produce said fanart or generate active fan discussion and keep up to date with things, and 9% lore fans who are mostly off to one side roleplaying and having fun with headcanons.

Invader Zim: Given it’s my oldest one it’s the one I have the most experience with but most of that experience is old and outdated. The fandom is very old by now, so there’s not much room for hype art. I’d say it’s split pretty evenly between old fans and new fans, given that a lot of old fans permanently fell out of touch w it. The only things i think will ever get any traction are contributing to well-recognized fanlore, popular ships, or popular fanfics.

Portal: fucking anything and everything bc most of the fanart or fanfics are one-shot-wonders and are only done bc the person making it played the games once and liked them - hardcore fans are so hard to come by, we’re all feral and wanting more, permanently unstated.

TF2: cute, thirst, angst, shitposts, or cool edgy shit - the fandom’s excited for pretty much anything bc fanartists are common but canon material is so rare. Old and new fans have very little distinction between them, except in-game, where the distinction between fans matters most. You either play it actively, or you played it a few times in gimmick servers with friends when you were 16 and haven’t let go of the characters since. No in-between.

Steven Universe: Pretty loud and proud fans, but not much for commentary on fanart posts. They love pretty much anything, and seem to have a preference for artists who mimic the style perfectly over artists who use their own style. Hard to say much when the source material says it all. Fancomics and fanfics get quite a bit of vocal reception, so AUs and fancharacters and headcanons are the most popular, it seems.

Pokemon: Honestly plain ol fanart is the most popular with fanfics, fanlore, and headcanons getting a hard second. Fans are pretty split between the games, the anime, and the manga, with some significant overlap. I don’t rly see a whole lot of people who are into all 3? This is another immensely huge fandom, bigger than Yogs, so really ur better off making your own little niche corner and seeing who sticks. Plain fanart is most popular bc headcanons and fanlore vary so intensely between fans, that just drawing a cool pic is enough to please most anyone looking for more. Also fancomics are pretty popular too.
