"Back Street Girls" Anime Promos Highlight Yakuza and Idol Sides

  There's two sides to every story, and in the case of Back Street Girls there's two sides to the leading men, too: yakuza and idols. After a trio of hapless yakuza make an unforgivable mistake, they have two options: Commit honorable suicide or go to Thailand for gender reassignment surgery so they can become a popular idol trio. 

  Once a yakuza, always a yakuza, but these three are going to try their best to make their boss loads of money as idols. To get in the groove, two flavors of promos have been released. First up we have the hard-boiled (yet still bubbly) gokudo version, followed by the idol version. The only real difference is the voice acting in the back half of each promo.

      Back Street Girls airs this July.

  Here's the previously-reported cast info: 

  Two voice actors will be playing each lead character: the male "before" voice and the female "after" voice.

  Kentaro Yamamoto: Daisuke Ono (Jotaro Kujo, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Airi Yamamoto: Yuka Nukui (Sanae Takahashi, Just Because!)

Ryo Tachibana: Satoshi Hino (Kamui, Gintama)

Mari Tachibana: Kaori Maeda (Aria Futaba, Aikatsu Stars!)

Kazuhiko Sugihara: Kazuyuki Okitsu (Serpico, Berserk)

Chika Sugihara: Hikaru Akao (Kaos-sensei, Comic Girls)

Boss Inukin: Keiji Fujiwara (Count Brocken, Mazinger Z/Infinity)

  For the idols of Goku Dolls, finding their new voices required practicing under a freezing waterfall. Fortunately for us the voice cast of the upcoming Back Street Girls adaptation, about a trio of yakuza screw-ups who become idols, is easily accessible.

The original manga by Jasmine Gyuh focuses on a trio of hapless yakuza who, after making an unforgivable mistake, are given a choice: commit honorable suicide, or go to Thailand for gender reassignment surgery and become an idol trio. The three choose the latter -- but despite training and "idol indoctrination," aren't ever quite able to leave their yakuza ways behind.

  Back Street Girls is set to air this July.
