oh there’s so many things i could say about him. his smile, his laugh. the way he coped so beautifully with being in the spotlight way younger than a person should be. the way he loves arsenal and the way he captains us. his taste in music and films (the intouchables is the best french film ever made). the way he plays when he’s having a good day. the way he sounds absolutely insane sometimes when talking about his training routines and has to reassure the interviewer that he’s alright when they get concerned 😭😭 also the way he interacts with his teammates definitely it seems like they get a completely different version of him than what we see lmao

there’s really not a lot lol but probably his media training. lord, the day he lets himself speak his mind is the day i die happy.

not sure how unpopular this is but he was/is put on a pedestal wayyy too much. it feels like a decent match for him is an excellent one for any else, and a ‘shit’ performance by him is a decent one by anyone else. i get so irritated whenever i see him be criticised for not creating when he scores, and then when he creates chances he gets criticised for not scoring :,)

as a person though, i feel like people make him out to be much more calm and sweet than he actually is lol. less so nowadays but he's definitely an emotional person? but more angry and passionate emotional than sad emotional ygm?

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

yep i exposed myself about this already so i feel no shame in admitting that i literally watch this when; a) it’s raining a lot and i’m stuck indoors, b) i’m ill, or c) i’m just generally feeling like shit and need something easy and un-angsty to pass the time. i have rewatched this film an embarrassing amount and i show no sign of stopping, especially given recent...... ideas...  that have been thought up..... ;))))

Perks Of Being A Wallflower

we’re getting into the aforementioned genre thing nerds. i am obsessed with this film. i just keep coming back to it and i notice/learn new things each time and i love the characters so much. Charlie’s journey through it is one of the most beautiful and authentic portrayals of a journey with mental illness that i’ve ever seen, and also the soundtrack fucking slaps. that ‘we are infinite’ scene lives in my head rent free at all times

The Intouchables (and for fucks sake watch the french version not the american version)

this film is just objectively brilliant. it’s about a disabled nobleman called Phillipe who’s looking to hire a new live-in caregiver, and because of his status, all of the applicants are really stiff, proper posh types who coddle him. and suddenly Driss comes along, who’s only there to get the signature saying he applied and failed in order to still get welfare benefits, and he’s just not like the other applicants to the point Phillipe’s assistant is just like ??? but the thing is (and he does this without realising because he doesn’t even WANT the job lmfao) he treats Phillipe like a normal person regardless of his disability instead of babying him, and it gets him the job. the whole film follows their friendship, with their individual romances being more of a sub-plot, and it’s just so beautiful and a favourite in my family. i’m pretty sure my sister could quote the entire thing in french if i asked her to

Dead Poets Society

i put this last but it is very very easily my favourite film of all time, hence me waiting to rant talk about it. now the theme here with films that i like (aside the first one lmao) is that i always really love emotional ones, and it’s because i never cry at films so whenever i find one that actually gets me close, it sticks with me. this film right here though? the only film that has made me not only cry, but continues to no matter how many times i rewatch it (and i’ve rewatched it a lot). It’s just beautiful and heartbreaking and the friendships are enough to make me go fucking mental and the whole teacher-student-found-family dynamic is pristine and the POETRY? english student brain can’t handle it mate. todd and neil ARE in love and you can’t convince me otherwise. also i think having robin williams as any sort of found family related character is a direct punch to the throat for me (looking at you good will hunting) so this was just *screams*. but yeah i honestly can’t rec this enough. if you’re going to watch any of these films, watch this one

HELP when i saw “fake film major” on ur blog i thought you were an actual film major just joking that you weren’t… how did i get there 😭 but omg i’m so glad you liked it !!!! YES there’s so much spider-man lol i looove the way she uses it, at first i was confused and i thought it was sort of for comedic effect? but i think she’s comparing how both women who are tied up and the victims of spider-man’s webs are rendered helpless and immobile.. at least that’s what i put in my essay so we’ll see if i’m right lol

and yes what u said about her reclaiming that picture, like just the fact that she’s actively looking for it is so cool !! my favorite scene is when spider woman takes away Hito’s picture from the easel at the art auction (male gaze) and replaces it with a video of Ageha’s performance (done for female pleasure) i was like !!!!!! omg so cool !!!!!! but also those opening and closing scenes where she’s sitting down and the guy is like … what’s ur movie about….. cause they almost reminded me of a porn film casting lol where she’s the only one on screen and looking up at whoever’s talking rather than looking straight at them but then the fact that at the very end she says “yes absolutely” when asked whether she’s a feminist.. UGH so brilliant bc if there’s one thing to remember is that SHE’s the director !!! so no matter how she presents herself in the movie it’s all done on purpose and she’s the one deciding everything.. those shots where the cameramen are like “oh lets reshoot that” or when the light falls and shit i thought it was for comedic effect at first (when i watched it for the first time i just thought it was funny lol) but now i’m 95% sure it was staged and purposefully included in there and yeah she’s just a genius.

but yeah i’m so glad you liked it !! if you wanna learn more about her friend, Steyerl made another short film on her and it’s called November. i liked it too but i don’t think it got to me as much as lovely andrea did? but i should watch it again! as for other movie recs 🤕🤕🤕 the the top of my head my favorite movies are like… twilight, mean girls and dirty dancing… ooh i do really like Intouchables (french movie !!!) and Big Fish but they’re also really popular so you might have already seen them! sorry for the long ask hehehe hope u have a good day !!!

I just got done watching it now and I enjoyed it, I love History so much - it was one of my favourites in school - and it was interesting to hear about this situation that I had never come across, and also gave an interesting perspective, esp considering the fact that in losing Andrea, Hito is someone who was directly impacted by what happened

As with Lovely Andrea, I think Hito makes an incredible storyteller, and had a really effective and interesting way of weaving together stories, memories and impressions, thank u for the rec 🥇

You make such a good point about the use of Spider-Man because he is I guess ‘performing’ bondage with his webs so it was a reaaaally good reference. I’m not used to watching documentaries where the filmmaker is the subject so it was easy to forget that Steyerl is doing both here, and it’s clear she’s clever in her approach too.

I liked that scene a lot too and I thought it was cool to see something like this from the perspective of someone who has experience with it and wasn’t looking to shame anyone or anything like that,,

I haven’t watched Twilight for a while but I remember being obsessed with it around the time that Breaking Dawn came out, and I adore RPatz so will definitely try and rewatch, and Mean Girls oh my dayyyyssss one of my favourite movies ever it’s so timeless and it gets better every time I watch it I love that shit, I actually haven’t seen Dirty Dancing, or Intouchables, or Big Fish so I’ll look into those for sure and lyk when I do :)))
