Spray Paint, Into the Country (12XU, 2019)
For all intents and purposes, Spray Paint haven’t been a real band for a long time now. What they’ve been doing for the last 3 or 4 years is emptying the vaults, in a way, and having fun with the music they’ve made over the time they spent together before scattering all over the world. ‘Into the Country’ follows a string of collaborations—with The Rebel, Ben Mackie (of OZ band Cuntz) and Protomartyr—but the basic tracks were laid way earlier, in 2016.
Spray Paint are a very unique band: they painted themselves into a very tight corner with a very strict formula. Their sound is incredibly specific, so much so that every new record could be a described as a different take on the first two. This is not to say that they always sound “the same” in a boring way, rather that they created a universe of sound that is uniquely inhabited by them and gets larger and larger at every release.
On this latest work (maybe their last?) “Chris did most of the heavy lifting”, according to the press release, but the three are so symbiotic in their approach you can hardly tell. Spray Paint keep sounding like a reverse Turing test where humans try to pass themselves as robots. Stiff, repetitive rhythms; deadpan vocals reciting cut-ups of conversations and YouTube comments; guitars that sound like someone trying to play surf music with sheet metal. Cold synth sounds and delays providing an additional mechanical heartbeat.
Compared to their earlier efforts the songwriting is way less human or loud (where ‘Feel the Clamps’ was almost hardcore punk in speed and aggression) and more in the realm of being cold and lonely in an empty warehouse. If you already like Spray Paint, on ‘Into The Country’ you’ll find them at their most focused. Less dark than ‘Dopers’, more isolationist and creepy than ‘Feel The Clamps’, way more structured than ‘Rodeo Songs’. If you’ve never listened to their music, buy all their records, doesn’t matter where you pick up from: they are one of the most consistently weird punk-making machines there are.
