What is Interteaching? SGISD’s Dr. James Soldner and Colleagues Publish a New Guide for Instructors & Researchers
UMass Boston’s Dr. James Soldner and colleagues Dr. Rocío Rosales (UMass Lowell), Dr. Catherine Gayman (Troy University), and Dr. Stephanie Jimenez (University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown) published an article in Behavior Analysis in Practice titled 20 Years of Interteaching Research and Practice: A Tutorial for its Use in the Classroom.
Interteaching is an evidence-based teaching method that emphasizes student engagement and cooperative peer learning. There are six main components of interteaching:
Preparation (Prep) Guide: Students receive a list of questions that help guide them through a reading before class.
Peer Discussion: Students spend time in pairs “interteaching” in the classroom. They discuss the prep guide questions and answers with each other while the teacher facilitates.
Record Sheets: Students fill out a “record sheet” after class where they rate the discussion and write about what they found difficult.
Clarifying Lecture: The teacher uses these record sheets to create a lecture to help clarify the parts of the reading that students found most difficult. Then, the teacher gives this lecture during the following class.
Evaluations (Probes): Over the course of the semester, the teacher evaluates progress by giving students frequent tests (“probes”) about the material. These probes make up the majority of the students’ grades.
Quality Points: In pairs, students earn additional points based on how well they do on the probes. If they score at least a “B” on a probe, they get additional “quality points”. This incentive to earn more points encourages cooperation between students in the working pairs. Some teachers use these points as “extra credit” rather than as part of a course grade.
Interteaching gives students several opportunities to interact with the same class material in different ways: through the prep guide, in the pair discussions, during the clarifying lecture, and finally, on the probes. Students in classrooms that use interteaching have shown improvement in critical thinking and communication skills.
Read the full article, 20 Years of Interteaching Research and Practice: A Tutorial for its Use in the Classroom, for examples and more detail about each component of interteaching.

this is sort of a bonus post to the teacher/student km, since I got a bit carried a way and ended up writing a bunch beyond the original theme
in terms of aesthetics, the school setting is absolute top tier. like, I'd say 60-70% of the time, setting something in a school is a pareto improvement to how hot it is. there's just so much there- besides the teacher/student dynamic, you've got a discipline & control aspect that goes beyond the individual teachers; humiliation-to-your-peers is an estbalished trope; schoolgirl uniforms;
one interesting interesting decision point is how "sexual" you make the setting itself, so, e.g., you have
normal curriculum/normal infrastructure: here the sexual aspect is one or two bad actors - a rogue (or tenured) teacher, or a bully with a lot of soft social power, or something altogether more undeground. exists on a spectrum with the second type
normal curriculum/sexual infrastructure: here the school is nominally a normal school, but has some sort of institutional sexual punishment/reward system. this includes "instead of detention, you go to the sex dungeon" punishments along with "there is just a subsidized prostitution caste of the student body to help the (other) students focus"
sexual curriculum/sexual infrastucture: this is where your "classes" start to include things like "anal 101" and "blowjob fundamentals (an interactive workshop)." I really like this kind of thing conceptually, but in practice I've found it to be more-miss-than-hit. (basically because it normalizes the sex aspect too much; there's no shame anymore). might try writing up what'd be necessary to make this trope really hot for me in a future post though
(theoretically there's also the sexual curriculum/normal infrastructure, but at the point where your classes included "hands-on fingering demonstrations," whether or not detention involves getting naked or not seems almost like a formality. or you just play it really straight and it's just normal sex-ed)
moreover, the complicate hierarchy of the stereotypical school setting is really fertile for interesting power dynamics. like, besides just teacher/student there's:
interstudent relationships, which include both outright bullying as well as more subtle forms of peer pressure and conformity, and can run the gamut from soft social power to physical confrontation
interteacher relationships, which contain a lot of the same dynamics with the added twist of the student body as a sort of audience
the relationship of students and teachers both to the rest of the school's bureacracy: students facing conflicting demands from the principal and their individual teachers on the one hand, teachers worrying about being disciplined by the school board on the other
a hierarchies that include non-academic workers, e.g. janatorial staff, or, in a sexual setting, the working girls, etc.
and so on. you can get pretty convoluted, especially if you're willing to involve parents or individuals otherwise outside of the student body itself
it's just a very rich setting with a lot of variables to play with, I can’t resist it

Teacher Evaluation reflection
Student Evaluations are always, even after 20-years of teaching, a period of deep self-reflection. For the formal reflection, requested by the Academics office, I submitted the following:
For Social-Cognitive Psychology, I really want to build in more discussion/ debate/ seminar-style learning experiences. I find it so difficult however to construct questions & prompts when students know so little about the topic. I’m not interested in how they feel about something, or what they think about it; I’m interested in them developing understanding and making connections between topics in the class — and that’s hard when their knowledge is so limited.
For Ethnic Studies, striking the emotional balance between ‘this is a safe and comfortable environment for us to have uncomfortable conversations, free of judgment’ and ‘you must absolutely follow these class rules’ is tough. I think I just need to be more explicit and engage in the meta-conversation about what liberties students have and do not have in the class.
But that is not everything that I want to be mindful of.
Furniture
Our classroom has relatively unique desks, and all student comments in regards to them were positive:
This teacher is my favorite teacher! He is awesome! Two things that he does to help me learn is that he has lessons that strengthen our understanding in specific aspects of the unit we’re learning everyday and he has those chairs that are the best!
The chairs that roll around in the room that students sit in helps me learn because I like to fidget and they keep me concentrated.
The only “area of focus” comment related to the class furniture was “Have the seating a little more arranged.” That’s an interesting comment because I assume it’s in reference to our lack of a seating chart (with assigned seats, as in a traditional high school class), but it could also be in reference to the way the rolling desks end o chaotically arranged in the classroom – sometimes in clumps, sometimes pushed to one-side of the room, and almost never in identifiable rows or groupings.
Group Work
With my Social-Cognitive Psychology class, students are assigned small groups at the beginning of the semester, and the majority of their “group work” is done with these same three or four students. (The notable exception being when we use the Interteaching method, a new, random small group is generated.) Comments varied:
Mr. Castro keeps me consistently engaged by having a variety of lessons like lectures, group work, videos, discussions, student teaching, and more.
Uses multiple styles of learning, such as lectures, groups, or big group activities.
He gives us group activities and encourages us to take notes to help us study.
We do a lot of group work in different ways, and the way he presents what he are learning is encouraging and engaging (funny too)
Two things my teacher could change to help me learn better include having more "hands-on" examples, as seeing physical visuals helps me to learn better, and incorporating more group projects.
The work we do in groups is not always that effective and I feel like I learn better in the lectures
It would be helpful if Mr. Castro… not assign us the same partner/group for every project.
We have consciously chosen to use the same student groups throughout the semester, as we are trying to teach life-long collaboration skills. A significant part of that is a feeling of responsibility to the group, which is only formed after extended time together and an expectation of a future working together.
Results
Normally my numbers are higher than the department average, which is itself higher than the school average, but this year my numbers were a little lower. I’m not worried per se, but I do pay attention to these things, and I do try to give students what they need — and, if not in conflict with that, what they think they need.
The above total score is based on the following six sub-categories:
My strength remains my domain-specific knowledge and my passion in the subject. I know and I love teaching psychology; these elements are collected in the “Expert” category:
Though still high, my lowest scores are in the “Manager” category:
In regards to the above, this is often a conscious choice on my part. High school students – even in an elective like psychology – have relatively low intrinsic motivation to teach themselves more about the subject than is required. Assigning students who finish a learning activity earlier than others additional work to do is seen by them as punitive. So, technically the students are incorrect in their scoring for this question; I rarely give them extra work to do if they finish before others. I will encourage them to start on homework, “either for this class or another,” but that’s not what the survey question is asking.
I’ll argue with the above question as well; I’m always ready for the next activity — unless there isn’t one. Because I have the learning outcomes chunked, if we have finished with the day’s learning, I will not start the next day’s lesson. That may leave the last five-minutes of class with nothing to do, and on rare occasion that might be the last ten-minutes of class. At this point, I tell students to “Relax, chit-chat with a neighbor; enjoy their company. You have X-minutes until the bell.” I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
Not Discussed
It barely came up in these evaluations but one of the changes we made between the Fall and the Spring semester for Social-Cognitive Psychology was changing the category weights for assignments. In the fall, we had the three midterms count for 50% of students’ grades and written assignments count for 25%. For the spring semester, we’ve switched those weights. Informal conversations with students and a careful review of the class scoresheets at the end of the semester showed that the Midterms were over-weighted, especially relative to their difficulty. We’ll see at the end of this semester how the new category weighting works out.

New Publication Looks at Interteaching and Group Size
A new article published in the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning looks at how group size affects interteaching. Assistant Professor James L. Soldner of SGISD’s rehabilitation counseling program and Assistant Professor Rocío Rosales of UMass Lowell co-wrote the article. Interteaching is a pedagogical system that engages students using various instructional components. One of these elements is “dyadic” or pair discussions. Dr. Soldner and Dr. Rosales’s article looks at how manupulating the size of these group discussions affects student performance. Read the article for free here.

Rehab Counseling Professor’s New Article Examines Interteaching
Assistant Professor James L. Soldner was published recently in The Psychological Record. Dr. Soldner co-wrote the article, titled “An Evaluation of the Pair Discussion Component of Interteaching,” with Rocío Rosales and Libin Zhang. Interteaching is an alternative approach to teaching that incorporates the traditional classroom lecture format, and adds other key elements, such as pairwork, frequent test probes, and the awarding of “quality points” for cooperative success. “A growing body of empirical research has shown an advantage for interteaching over traditional instructional formats, such as lecture, with regard to student learning and satisfaction,” explained Dr. Soldner. “One of the core components of interteaching is the pair discussion: a facilitated conversation between two learners on a specific topic. This is the first study to empirically evaluate the impact of the pair discussion component of interteaching in a face-to-face undergraduate course.”
