The way it’s the anniversary of intersect and literally just yesterday my friend messaged me for the link 👀!
Also my sister is gonna give ff’s a shot so after she finishes my first rec (I’m easing her in with a sfw bc I’m not sure how she feels about smut yet 😂), I’m def recommending your stuff bc I know she will love the style (plus your smut is always tastefully done 😌🤭)
Ahhhhhh Miks 🥺🥺🥺🥺 Don't make me cry!!! ILYSM!!! I so appreciate your support and general screaming. I *still* have your chapter-by-chapter reviews in my drafts. And I think...that's what I'll do for the anniversary. Respond to them (finally)!!!
And yasssss lezzgooo with the fanfics! Would love to read if/when she's done with it 🥰

Hello Shina!
I hope you are having a great day!
Just came by to say that I’m absolutely destroyed after binge reading Intersect, thanks to a recommendation by the lovely @miksancheese and the beautiful work you did!
I might reserve the screaming to Mikayla for now, that said: here, read this Joon fic and the first chapters you throw me Yoongi, flirty Yoongi, GRAMMY YOONGI!!! My Yoongi biased ass can’t take this hahaha
Also, as a fan of Friends, love the references! Jungkook pulling a Phoebe at the airport had me fighting to keep my laughing fit down due to be so late at night right now hahahaha
Can’t wait to read more of your work!
OMG, hi!!!
Thank you, you are so sweet! Ahahha Yoongi was a curveball, I'll admit 😂 But it was a sexy distraction that I found effective!
I love Friends 😍 I practically watch it every day since it's always on! I'm so glad you enjoyed the references. The Phoebe moment was something I've been wanting to do since I started writing the series 🤣 I knew that after I decided to make this NamKook bro-fest...it had to happen! Yes, it's very crack-y but I thoroughly enjoyed writing it!
Thank you so much for enjoying the series. It's my favorite that I've written so far and I only hope that I can capture the same magic in another series 💕
PS - Thank you for the rec, Miks @miksancheese 😘

Hi!!! I just finished Intersect and I wanted to tell you how much I loved it! I don’t normally like AU’s but your world building was so well written I didn’t even mind. The ending was satisfying without being too cheesy and the character building for everyone was top notch. You deserve so much praise for it! 100/10.
PS- the last sex scene was *chef’s kiss*
Hi there!!! Thank you so much!!! 🥰 That means so much to me. I'm so glad that you stumbled upon this story and loved it. I'm also happy that you didn't find the ending cheesy, even though there were so many other moments that were 😂
Oof--that last smut scene? Yeah...I go pretty hard with my biases so I'm glad you thought it was good 😏
Most of all, thank you for taking the time to send me feedback 🥺 This story is one of my favorites and I had a lot of fun working on this.
Take care! 💜

And I’ve been basically reading all day since I’ve had off this afternoon

Hi!!! I hope you didn't mind that I tagged you? I wanted to include readers who reached out and told me that they enjoyed Intersect.
Also, I was very tempted to add the bath salts bit and maybe something about them "starting to effervesce" 🤣 Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed that!

“No, no, no, Namjoon!”
“Yes, YN!”
“No!”
“Yes!”
Jin rolled his eyes and blew out a raspberry as you and Namjoon argued in circles. It was as if he had turned completely translucent in the last few minutes. You called an emergency meeting because you couldn’t make Namjoon’s budget proposal work. You suggested decreasing the number of client meetings in favor of adding more site visits and including an exit interview for participants–but Namjoon disagreed.
“Guys—what if—“
“No, Namjoon! Scaling back on the data collection will compromise our response rates,” you argued, cutting Jin off mid-sentence. He shut his mouth right away and thought about leaving the room…and if he did, would either of you even notice?
“But scaling it back leaves more room for client check-ins and follow-ups—wouldn’t that be better than a third survey?” Namjoon tries to reason.
You let out an exasperated breath, trying to give Namjoon another counterargument. Back and forth you went again. Pointing at your spreadsheets and other successful projects under previous client contracts, giving him additional evidence of how your approach is better and meets the client’s criteria based on their Request for Proposal.
Namjoon pushed back–arguing that the company needs to be more client-centric. They were spending the money and it would be in your best interests to give them more of your time rather than allocating the money to more respondent questions–which could lead to survey-fatigue.
You exhaled sharply once more–trying your best to keep your last ounce of patience in check. “Namjoon,” you began calmly. “The Moonstone Foundation knows our work. They know that we care about their grant recipients based on our previous projects. I have that direct line to their CEO–I can give her a call or drop by her office on my own dime to give her the follow-up. I don’t need that worked into the budget.
What she and the board wants–is to know that the money they’re putting into these programs are helping people. And if it’s not, they would like to know how to change that. They can’t know that if we don’t actually hear from beneficiaries. Beneficiaries, who are people. People, Namjoon. Not data.”
He looks away, flexes his jaw for a moment then looks back at you. “You’re being too subjective with this, YN.”
“So what if I am? The program that they want us to evaluate is one that benefits women and children in crisis. How can you not be subjective about it?”
Your eyes lock with his while you gently tap your fingertips on the table to drive your point home. “These are the cases that fall through the cracks–the ones that the government overlooks. The Foundation is fulfilling that need and if we can help them broaden their reach? Think of the change they can make. All those people that they can help.”
Namjoon throws his head back and looks up at the ceiling. He flexed his jaw back and forth–the wheels were turning. He knew he was done for. This was why he pushed so hard to recruit you. Because you cared on a whole different level. This was the whole point of public policy–it was supposed to be more about the public…who would then affect the policy.
“Point taken,” Namjoon yields to you.
You beamed, clasped your hands together and somehow managed to stifle a squeal. “Jin, you think we can input those new numbers now?”
You both turn to where he sat at the head of the table, only to find that his seat was empty. He had left his own office.
“What the—where did he go?” Namjoon wondered.
You and Namjoon then walked out of his office, agreeing to email Jin new budget revisions for his approval.
As you both walk back to your office, you spot him coming off the elevator, walking towards you with a large cup of boba tea and a croffle.
“Hey, is that from Aqua Club?” You asked.
“Yep,” he answers with his mouth full. “All that arguing worked up an appetite in me.”
“Isn’t it usually crowded during this time of day?” Namjoon remarked.
“Yeah! Imagine that,” Jin says sarcastically.
You grimaced, wondering exactly how long you and Namjoon kept going back and forth with the numbers.
“Jin-hyung, we agreed on the new budget—“
“Oh, did you?” Jin asks incredulously.
You cleared your throat. “We did. Uhm, sorry about—earlier.”
“Next time you guys call a meeting, make sure you have all your shit together. The end of the fiscal year is coming up and I don’t have a lot of free time so I’d strongly prefer that you not waste it!”
As he walks away with a huff, he quickly calls over his shoulder. “Get me the new budget proposal in my inbox within the hour!”
******
After sending off the new numbers that you and Namjoon agreed on, you hear your phone vibrating. You check the caller ID and see that it was Jungkook.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Hi noona…I’m not bothering you, am I?” He sounded dejected on the other line.
“Not at all. I just sent something off and have a few minutes free. What’s up?”
He groans. “Ah…this whole week at school has been killing me. My advisor has been riding my ass–not in a good way–and I just need a break.”
“Uhm…okay. W-what sort of break were you thinking? Are you flying off somewhere? Going to mom’s?”
“Nah. I’d rather not tell her about this…because she’s probably just going to tell me to suck it up and I just want a little peace. I was wondering if I could come hang out with you for the weekend? I was planning on driving up tomorrow, so I can get there Thursday night–stay the weekend then drive back Monday?”
“I don’t mind you staying over but aren’t you going to miss school?”
“My grades are in good standing as of the beginning of the term and my other subjects, I can check in with my professors online.”
“Alright, well–if you’re sure your ass is covered then I’m fine with you coming over for a visit.”
It occurred to you that you hadn’t mentioned recent developments with Yoongi. Since your brother was arriving at the end of the week, you wondered if it was too soon to do an introduction.
“Have you been super busy at work? I was wondering if we could do something fun together,” he asked earnestly.
“Well…it’s been busy but not anything I can’t delegate to my team so we can go out while you’re here.”
“Nice! I can’t wait,” he says excitedly.
“Uh–it’s also possible that someone might come hang out with us.”
“Ooohhh–is this your guy?” he says with a tinge of intrigue.
“Yeah. It’s been a few weeks…not too crazy,” you tried to downplay it.
“A few weeks? You’ve been holding out on me, noona!”
“Shut up, Kookie,” you said lovingly. “We’re trying to keep it professional at work, which is why I haven’t really talked about it much.”
He laughs on the other line. “Well–I’d be happy to size him up for you,” he teases. “Or did you already take care of that?”
“Fucking hell, Jungkook,” you said, rolling your eyes while his howls ring in your ear.
******
That evening, after work, you went to Yoongi’s place and ate in. Afterwards, he ate you out.
Yoongi was getting out of the shower, and you were trying to zip up your dress, getting ready to go back to your place. You would have stayed the night had it not been for his impending trip tomorrow.
“What time do you leave?”
“I’m getting on the 8AM flight since there’s a bit of a time difference when I land there. I want to get some sleep before a marathon of lectures the next day and then a bunch of meet-and-greets with potential job candidates.”
“Wow. I vaguely remember my job talk,” you said nostalgically as you tried to fiddle with the back of your dress.
He walks up right behind you, clasping both sides before sliding the zipper up before resting his hands on your waist, pulling your ass flush against his crotch, which you instinctively start to grind up against. As if those two orgasms weren’t enough–you were getting greedy.
“It was quite the out-of-body experience for me,” he says before planting feathery kisses on your neck. You moaned softly at the contact, tilting your head back further into his mouth.
“I’m going to miss you,” he says in between kisses.
You turned your head immediately towards him. “Really?”
“Yeah. It’s been a fun few weeks, right?”
Hmm…you felt that it was a little more than ‘fun’ but you weren’t about to ruin the moment. You turn your body to face him, palms resting on his chest.
“Listen…uhm…so, my brother is visiting over the weekend. I was thinking that we could hang out with him one night–perhaps dinner?”
He loosened his hold on you.
“Uh…your brother?” With his change in tone, you felt him slowly retreat from whatever moment you were having.
You started to scramble. “Or…or not. I mean–you know, we don’t have to. I wasn’t sure if we were at that stage.”
Shit. Did you use the word ‘we’ too many times in the last minute? You hadn’t really discussed this with Yoongi. Obviously, it doesn’t feel like you’re on the same page if he just said that the last few weeks have been ‘fun.’
“N-no, no. I think it would be fun to hang out with your brother.”
There it was again. Fun.
“Really, Yoongi–you don’t have to. I figured, around that time, you’d be coming back from your trip, probably tired–”
He shuts you up by pressing his lips on yours. “YN–I don’t mind. Just call me to let me know what you have planned and I’ll make it work. I’d love to meet your brother.”
You smiled at him. “Thank you.”
And boy, did you thank him. You pushed him down on the bed and pulled his half-hard cock out of his sweats. He jerked hard when you pulled him in with easy suction, hunger and need tingling down his spine. His head fell back as his thighs tensed, letting you take what you wanted.
******
The week zips by quickly and you realize that Jungkook was already set to arrive later today. You were worried that you might be working late and miss his arrival so you told him to come meet you at the office instead. You didn’t want to risk leaving a copy of your key out where anybody could access it.
Plus, it was a good excuse to pry yourself away from work.
You gave the front desk of the office building a heads up that you were expecting a visitor, likely after office-hours but to send him up anyway as long as he presented his driver’s license for identification.
It was past 6PM when you sent a quick text to him, confirming that you were still at the office.
[Kookie] 6:25PM: Found street parking! Coming up in a bit.
[You] 6:26PM: 'Kay. Just check in with your ID and come up to the 12th floor. I’ll meet you by the elevators.
A few minutes later, you get another text from Jungkook saying that he was on his way up.
You get up from your chair and walk down to meet him by the elevators.
The doors open and his big, bunny smile is the first thing you see. You both squeal in excitement as you jump into each other’s arms. You haven’t seen each other since the holidays as work has kicked up for you and the school term has been incredibly heavy for Jungkook as well.
You walk him back to your office as you wrap up your last few emails. You couldn’t wait until the next few days because this proposal was finally on its way out the door and the staff retreat was going to be a great way to unwind.
The office was mostly empty since half your senior staff were at the conference–you, Namjoon, and a handful of other staff stayed due to deadlines.
All other junior staff had gone home for the evening.
Jungkook looks out the window, the city lights twinkling in the distance.
“This looks nice.”
“You think so?”
“Yeah. I could see why you love staying late,” he jokes.
You rolled your eyes. “I don’t do it all the time. It’s crunchtime on this proposal so I’m trying to make sure that I have all my ducks in a row, you know? If we get this contract, it will be a huge deal for us.”
“You don’t have to explain it. It’s your job–and you love it.”
You gave him a small smile and turned back to your screen, finishing up one last email. After you hit ‘send,’ you pull up your food delivery app on your phone and ask him what he felt like eating for dinner. Your brother was not a picky eater and would definitely eat everything in sight, if he could. You settle on galbi, tteokbokki, kimchi fried rice, and a double serving of chicken wings.
After you place the order, you gather your things and walk out of your office together.
As you slow your steps towards the bank of elevators, you see another figure walking out of his office. His head was down, looking at his phone as he took his quick strides towards the elevators.
You tried to act casually so as not to alert Jungkook but pressed the call button repeatedly, almost in a panic--willing the cab to come up before he closed in on both of you.
Just then, Jungkook turns around just in time to see Namjoon look up, slowing his steps towards where you both stood.
“Oh, look, noona. I guess you’re not the only one working late tonight.”
Namjoon gives you a small nod in acknowledgment as he stands a good distance from you and Jungkook.
Since the elevator took its time coming to your floor, you didn’t want to be rude.
You cleared your throat. “By the way, this is my brother, Jungkook. He’s visiting for a few days from university. Jungkook, this is my coworker, Na-ahem-joon,” you mumbled his name on purpose, hoping your brother would ignore it, shake his hand politely and that would be the end of it.
Your brother turned to Namjoon and took a step towards him. “Nice to meet you, I’m Jeon Jungkook. And I’m so sorry, I think my hearing has gone bad from blasting music too loud but I didn’t catch your name?”
“It’s Kim Namjoon,” he says as he shook your brother’s outstretched hand.
Hands still clasped, Jungkook slowly turned his head towards you, eyes bulging, lips curving into a sly smile. “Kim Namjoon? You’re Kim Namjoon?”
You die a little inside from embarrassment. All those phone calls you spent ranting about Namjoon to your brother. You never thought they would actually meet. You wanted the ground to open up and swallow you right this second.
“Uh, yes,” Namjoon says, slightly confused. “Have we met before?”
He looks back at Namjoon. “No but I’ve heard so much about you–owww!!!” Jungkook yelps as you pinch him on the back of his arm, right on that sensitive, fleshy part above his elbow.
“Sorry, I thought I saw a spider crawling up your sleeve there,” you said.
As Jungkook rubs his throbbing skin, Namjoon stifles a smile when the elevator doors finally open.
You hurriedly step in. “Anyway, c’mon Jungkookie! We don’t want to miss our food delivery,” you said as you tugged at his hoodie.
“There’s plenty of room, Namjoon-nim!” Jungkook says as he holds his arm out to block the elevator door from closing.
Jungkook gives you a quick look and wiggles his brows–you give him a silent threat but relax your face when Namjoon steps into the elevator with Jungkook standing in between you two.
“So, uh–what are you majoring in?” Namjoon asks after the cab starts to descend.
“Media and Marketing,” Jungkook replies. “I’m in my final term,” he divulges further.
“Ah. How’s it been?”
“Rough,” he says emphatically. “I just needed a break and YN said I could come stay with her for a bit.”
“That’s, uh, nice of her,” Namjoon comments while subtly glancing sideways at you.
“Yeah–she’s really great,” Jungkook says with a smile as you stand there, keeping your eyes on the elevator floor display screen.
Namjoon smiles at your brother’s admiration of you. “She is,” he suddenly says.
Your eyebrow quirks, thinking that you might have misheard Namjoon’s response. But you couldn’t know for sure because the doors finally open to the lobby and you release what seems to be like a long breath that you had been holding since you got on.
Namjoon steps out first and turns to wish you both a good night.
You start to make your way over to the doors while Namjoon walks over to the lobby bike lockers to retrieve his bicycle.
“Where did you park, Kookie?” you asked.
“Hold on, noona–Namjoon-nim!” your brother calls out.
You cringe inwardly. “Jungkook, let’s stop bothering the poor man,” you almost begged.
But your brother ignores you. “Do you need a lift? I have a bike hitch on my car? We don’t mind!”
“We?” you hissed quietly, glaring at Jungkook.
Although he was tempted to make you squirm further, he declines–much to your relief. “I don’t live too far from here. Thank you for the offer, though,” he says as he walks his bike out the doors and pedals away.
Once Namjoon has rounded the corner, out of sight, you give your brother a shove on his shoulder–the strongest one you could muster–while his cackles echo throughout the empty lobby.
******
[Yoongi] 1:10AM: Just got home. Tired.
It was after 1AM when his text came in…not long after you and Jungkook called it a night–but not before your brother teased you to no end about Namjoon during your dinner.
You shoot Yoongi a quick text back saying that it was totally fine if he wanted to sleep all day instead of going to dinner.
He texted back saying that he’d be fine and that he would see you at 5:30 tomorrow at the restaurant that you picked.
[You] 1:12AM: Glad you're home safe. I've missed you.
You waited a few minutes but he didn’t respond. It was the middle of the night after all and he texted earlier to let you know that his flight had been delayed. He just probably knocked out, you thought.
Throughout the week, you had called and texted each other briefly in the evenings, though it was the middle of the afternoon for you since the conference was across the country.
It was a 4-day conference and by end of day 2, it sounded like it was wearing down on him. His answers were clipped and you even felt a hint of impatience in his voice.
Last year, you accompanied Celina to this conference as a recruiter. As a job seeker years ago, it was nerve-wracking and exhausting trying to fit in meet-and-greets with potential employers and networking. But at least you could pick and choose which events and people to meet.
As a recruiter, you had to attend all lectures and symposiums. It was detrimental as to whom you wanted on your team–and everybody was competing for the best.
For the rest of Yoongi’s trip, you kept it to text exchanges, asking him how his day went. His answers were fairly straightforward. Not a lot of elaboration until you confirmed your dinner reservations, to which he agreed to while he was still out of town.
Even though his last text told you that he was still up for dinner with Jungkook, you couldn’t shake the sinking feeling that ate at you.
******
Friday was shaping up to be hectic. You left your place at 7AM due to early meetings and kissed your brother goodbye, apologizing for leaving him to his own devices for the day.
He just grunted and sleepily waved you off in response. You figured he didn’t actually fall asleep ‘til after 4AM since you got up to go to the bathroom at 3:45 and you could still hear him snickering in your second bedroom. He was probably watching something on his phone, with his little galaxy projector reflecting through the bottom of the door.
Between the early morning meetings with your team and another high-priority presentation for Celina, you couldn’t wait til the day was over.
You and Yoongi had crossed paths in the hallways between meetings but hadn't had the chance to talk yet.
He spent most of the morning, hunkered down in his office. Even his chat app was set to “do not disturb” mode so you figured you’d hold off til the end of the day to reconnect.
******
“Okay, budget’s good–”
“We also addressed her last comment about the Methods,” you pointed out.
Namjoon called an impromptu meeting in his office, running through final checks on your proposal before presenting it to Celina.
You were behind him, hovering over his shoulder as he scrolled through your document on the screen. Your breaths softly fanning behind his ear while you quickly read through the displayed text.
He cleared his throat, trying to ignore the involuntary shiver he felt down his spine. “Uh, right. That's…good.” After a beat, he cleared his throat once more in an attempt to refocus. “Did you reorder the staff priority like she asked?”
“Yes, I did, Namjoon,” you snapped but quickly caught yourself before he could react. “Sorry–just a little nervous, that’s all.” You straightened up and got out from behind his desk.
“It’s fine,” he mumbles, dismissing your previous tone. “As long as we addressed all of her comments from earlier this week.”
You nodded, while you stood by the door, checking on a couple more printouts that you brought by.
“You, uh–are you good?” He says, sensing some unspoken tension–not particularly directed towards him.
“I’m okay, Namjoon” you said, reassuring him while trying to push aside your thoughts about Yoongi and refocusing on the task at-hand.
He nods, dropping the subject. “Alright. I guess I’ll see you in a few then?”
“Yeah, see you in a few,” you echoed as you exited his office and walked back to yours, trying to psych yourself out further.
******
Once it was time for your big meeting, you passed by Yoongi’s office on your way to Celina’s office–his door was still shut. You shook your head and thought nothing of it. You figured that he had a lot of work to catch up. And right now, you had a big contract to present to your director before she gave her final endorsement to the client before close of business.
You and Namjoon waited nervously as you both sat across from Celina’s desk while she paged through the printout. She had already read initial drafts and made comments throughout the week, which you had already implemented.
She stops right when she gets to the budget tab where you marked the major changes that you made since she last reviewed it.
“This looks different,” she points to the page.
You leaned over to look at the page, even though you knew full well what section she was referring to. “Yes, we changed that the other day,” you said.
“You reviewed this, Namjoon?” she asks, turning to him.
“Yes. YN made a compelling argument and we were able to adjust the budget accordingly,” he says, sticking up for you.
“And Jin signed off on this?”
Namjoon nodded. “With his full approval,” he adds.
Celina hummed, inspecting the rest of the budget carefully. She hums some more and making small sounds of approval as she moves towards the end of the text.
Finally, she shuts the back cover and places both hands on the printed copy.
She grins at the both of you. “I have a really good feeling that we’re going to win this, guys.”
You and Namjoon both breathe a sigh of relief. Celina then instructs both of you to write one last section–just for clarification purposes because one portion seemed to read a little vague. You apologized for the oversight and promised to rectify it.
Once you had addressed Celina’s final comment, she didn’t need to review it and asked you to send her a single, combined digital file that she can electronically endorse and send off to the client.
After what seems like ages, Jin sends a confirmation email to the whole team saying that the client had acknowledged receiving your proposal and that you should expect to hear back within a week or two.
Your whole team gathered in a conference room, doing a pre-celebration of sorts–mostly to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work. You and Namjoon promised to throw a bigger celebration once you won the bid.
“Oh my god, I need to get drunk tonight,” Mirai says.
“I like that plan,” Taehyung says.
“Are you in, YN?” Jimin asks you.
“I wish I could, guys but I have dinner plans with my brother tonight,” you said regretfully.
“Tell him to come with us,” Hobi urges.
“I’ll have to take a raincheck. I haven’t seen him in a while and just want to spend some quality time with him. I hope you understand. I promise, drinks on me at the next happy hour, okay?”
The team groans collectively but wouldn’t turn down a chance at free drinks–even though it was scheduled in the future. They knew you were good for it.
“How about you, Namjoon? Come on! Let’s get shit-faced!” Hobi says.
“You guys go on ahead,” he waves them off. “I have to sort through the new opportunities that just came in today.”
“Boo!” Taehyung and Mirai jeer.
“Namjoon, it’s a Friday night and we just turned in this monster bid! Even Jin said he’d come out for a couple drinks...or a dozen,” Jimin says with a laugh. “Live a little!”
Hobi glances at his friend, who looks like he’s already had his mind made up. “C’mon guys, let’s leave Namjoonie alone. You don’t get to Associate Director by coming out to happy hours. The work doesn’t stop,” he says a little bitterly, patting Namjoon on the shoulder. “But just in case you change your mind and fun-Namjoon decides to return, you know that the invitation is always open!”
You look at Namjoon who is awkwardly trying to leave the team celebration. You, too, were attempting a swift exit so you could stop by Yoongi’s office.
“Alright guys…on that note, have a great time tonight–I gotta get home if I want to make my reservations with my brother,” you said as you stepped out of the room.
“YN–”
“Hm?” You turned back to see Namjoon stepping out as well.
“Great job,” he says.
“You, too,” you said in response, trying to hide your surprise with his sudden compliment.
“Have a good weekend,” he says with a nod.
You nodded back in acknowledgement then walked away to make a beeline for Yoongi’s office.
Once you got there, you saw his door open–but your excitement was short-lived as you found it to be empty. He had left without saying a word to you the whole day.
You walked back to your office and reached over to grab your phone from your desk. You had completely forgotten to grab it in the middle of your excitement to celebrate with your team once the proposal was sent out.
You tap on your screen, checking whether you missed any messages or calls from him.
There were two messages:
Jungkookie: Hey, noona! Just checking if we’re still on for dinner? No rush but I’m ready when you are. Can’t wait to meet your guy!
Yoongi: I can’t make it tonight. Can we reschedule to Sunday night? Sorry.
******
“I don’t know, noona. That feels like a red flag to me.”
“Jungkookie…” you sighed. “He just got back from close to a week-long trip. Four of those days were spent either talking or listening to people talk for 8 hours straight. And the rest of those days were spent flying across the country. Give him a break.”
“Yeah but couldn’t he have just said that yesterday rather than saying you’ll go then canceling an hour before,” he asked in annoyance.
“He said he’d make it up on Sunday, okay? Let’s just drop it, please?”
Jungkook wanted to argue some more but seeing as you already looked exhausted, he bit his tongue instead.
“I’ll only drop it if you make it up to me by taking me out drinking tonight,” he says.
“Are you serious?”
“Yes! I was really looking forward to going out tonight, noona. C’mon,” he whines petulantly. “You must have some friends on speed-dial or something? It’s Friday!”
You groaned.
“Please…noona…” he does a little pout–the same one he used to do when he asked you to chaperone him so your parents didn’t have to when he went out with his friends.
Next thing you knew, you were dialing Mirai’s number.
******
You arrived at the bar–or was it a bowling alley? A bar-slash-bowling alley? You seemed apprehensive after Mirai told you about it on the phone. Anyway, it seemed to pass Jungkook’s vibe-check because his eyes were practically glowing in excitement.
You spot Mirai and Taehyung at the bar grabbing drinks while Hobi, Jimin, and Jin were at their designated lanes.
Mirai glances back for a moment and see you both standing by the doorway. “YN! You made it!” She exclaims as she comes over to give you a hug.
“And who is this?”
Jungkook flashes his million-dollar smile at her. “What’s up, I’m Jungkook,” he says with a slight lilt to his voice.
“Jungkook–no!” You said resoundingly while shooting him a warning look. If there was one other line you could prevent from getting blurred, it was preventing your brother from flirting with your best analyst.
Mirai giggles. “Nice to meet you, Jungkook. I’m Mirai–are you over 21?” She asked not out of interest but for assurance since your brother had that baby-face look going for him.
“I’m old enough for you,” he says with a low tone, finishing with a smirk.
“Yah–he’s 24!” You give Jungkook an even more threatening look, pulling him to the side to accost him. “You stop this right now or I am calling a car for you to take you back home,” you said through clenched teeth.
He laughs. “Lighten up, noona,” he says under his breath. “I’ll behave, I promise!”
“You guys want to play? You can just grab your shoes over on that side,” she points towards the counter for bowling shoe rentals. “Tae and I were just grabbing refills for everyone if you guys wanted to add to the tab or something,” she says as you both walk back to her.
“Yeah, that’s cool. We’ll go get our shoes,” you said.
After you and Jungkook were fitted for bowling shoes, you walked over to your designated lane and found that they had a bit of an uneven match going.
Jin and Taehyung were teamed up against Mirai, Jimin, and Hobi.
Both teams scored fairly low but in terms of total score, Jin’s team was winning by a couple of pins.
With you and Jungkook joining in, they agreed to reshuffle teams after the last frame. The teams would be composed of Jin, Taehyung, and Hobi against you, Jungkook, Mirai, and Jimin.
As Jin finishes inputting the team names to start a new game, Hobi starts yelling.
“What the fuck! Look who it is!”
Everyone looks to where he was pointing and you find Namjoon wandering around, dressed in a dark hoodie and jeans. It was the first time you were seeing him in casual wear.
“Well, what do you know? This night is getting better already,” Jungkook says to you without the others hearing.
“Shut. Your. Mouth,” you muttered while he grinned at you. He could be such a little shit sometimes.
Hobi puts his pointer finger and thumb between his lips and lets out a loud whistle to call Namjoon’s attention. As soon as he hears it, his head whips around and Hobi waves him over to your lane.
“You actually made it!” Hobi teases as he hugs his friend. He was already buzzed and became extra happy to see his friend finally make it to an office outing.
“Aish…I realized those RFPs can wait a little longer. We did just push out a huge proposal today so–I figured a celebratory drink was warranted,” he says.
“Oh, shit! Now we’ll have an even matchup!” Jimin yells out.
“Well, we get Namjoon since you guys already have four people,” Taehyung says.
“I don’t care–we’ll beat them with two people,” Jin says to him as he takes a gulp of his beer.
“What are the stakes?” Namjoon asks.
“Loser pays the tab,” Hobi says.
Namjoon looks at you. “You agreed to this?”
You shrugged. “Why not?”
He chuckles. “I hope you don’t regret it,” he utters.
You scoffed. “Too much talking–just get your shoes on and we’ll find out soon enough!”
“Don’t worry, noona. We’ve got this in the bag,” Jungkook whispers to you and winks.
After the first game, Jin refused to accept defeat and accused Jungkook of being an interloper since he technically wasn’t a colleague.
Your brother laughs it off and casually mentions that he did a bowling summer camp when he was in high school and still played in a weekend league with some college buddies.
“Fuck!” Jin exclaims in frustration.
“Jin-hyung, don’t worry. We’ll get them in the next game,” Namjoon says.
******
They didn’t.
Hobi threw three gutter balls and Jin, in his frustration–or enthusiasm–managed to throw his ball over to your lane by accident.
Taehyung and Namjoon fared marginally better, breaking 100 on their final scores.
Jungkook ended the game with three strikes in a row–a turkey–and picking up all his spares–but missing out on the last three frames. Still, it was enough to hand your team the win.
But the whole group took it in stride and high-fived each other while still trading little jabs at the losing team.
“Alright, alright. That was fair and square. Since this is my first time out in a while, I’ll pick up the tab,” Namjoon says to everyone’s collective oohs and aahs.
“Are you sure?” you asked him, feeling a little bad that it was his first time out in a while and he gets saddled with a possibly fat-bill considering how much Jimin, Mirai, and Jin drank.
He shrugged his shoulders. “Yeah, I don’t mind. I got it,” he says. He excuses himself to walk over to the cashier.
The whole group is still buzzing, finishing up the final remnants of food before heading home.
Jungkook seemed to find himself feeling right at-home with your coworkers. He got along quickly with Taehyung and Jimin, already joking around with them as if they’d known each other for years.
You excused yourself to check on Namjoon. You felt guilty and thought you’d at least split the tab since the heaviest drinkers were in your team. As a senior lead, you took it upon yourself to treat your team after having done a great job in the last few weeks as well.
******
Namjoon calls out to the bartender and requests to settle the tab for your lanes.
He leans back, waiting for the bill to be brought to him as the bar was starting to get busy. He figured he’d be waiting a few minutes. He shifts his weight and happens to glance over the entrance.
He gasps when he sees a familiar face walk through the doors. It was a face he hadn’t seen in a long time. He paces himself as he feels his heart race—unsure whether he should turn around or hide behind some other bar patrons. She was closing in on him quickly.
He decides to act cool, ducking his head, his elbow resting on the bar, his hand trying to subtly hide his face—trying his best not to draw attention to himself. With any luck, maybe she’ll just walk past him since she was with a group of friends.
“Joon?”
He releases a breath and straightens out. “Uh, hi, Mayumi,” he gives her a tight smile.
A few seconds later, a man catches up to her and pauses, curious as to what’s stopped her in her tracks.
She tells her companion and the rest of friends that she would catch up to them as they went to pick their lanes and rent their shoes.
Her male companion gives her a quick kiss on her forehead as she nods, giving him some inaudible reassurance.
They stood there quietly, trying to figure out who should speak first.
She was as beautiful as ever—not much has changed. Her hair was shorter, maybe but she looked almost the same as she did when they first met over 8 years ago.
“Long time, huh,” she finally says.
“Yeah. H-how’ve you been?”
“I’ve been good. Really good,” she says as she glances over in the direction where her friends and male companion were.
“And you?” She asks politely.
“Good,” he answers.
“Are you here with anyone?” She says, looking around the place.
“Namjoon!”
They both turn to see you walking up to both of them.
“I felt bad, I thought I’d just split the tab with you,” you said to him.
He stood there quietly, looking at you briefly before his eyes shifted back to this woman whom you didn’t even notice until now.
You felt completely rude and didn’t mean to ignore her. “Oh, hi,” you said awkwardly, feeling like you had interrupted an intimate moment.
“S-sorry, Namjoon. I can go–”
“It’s fine,” she says a little too warmly at you, as if she knew who you were. “I was just about to rejoin my fiance and our friends. It was good seeing you again, Joon,” she says, smiling at him and giving him a squeeze on his arm.
You watch her walk away as Namjoon is frozen in his position–seemingly in shock.
“Who was that?” You dared to ask.
“No one of consequence,” he responds in an instant before returning to the bar as the bartender waves him over with your group’s tab, settling the full bill himself.
“I’m uh–gonna go home. Would you mind just telling the team that I headed out?”
“S-sure. Are you alright?” You asked him. “I can ask Tae or Jin to share a car with you or something?”
He then pulls his hood up over his head, stopping right above his eyebrows...making him suddenly looking smaller than he actually was. “Nah. I’ll walk, thanks. Have a good night, YN.”
“Good night, Namjoon.” But he doesn’t hear it since he had practically bolted through the doors, as if he couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Starting a new job was always intimidating. New office, new friends, new opportunities, new…everything!
But you wouldn’t let nerves get in the way of your first week of work. You had previously transferred from another firm where you got your start in your career until a project partner and frequent collaborator was able to lure you out to join their firm, which had offered more competitive salaries, allowed more room for growth, and best of all–an opportunity to lead your own team.
You didn’t consider yourself a suck-up but some people may misconstrue it that way. You were just very proactive and showed lots of initiative in trying to get acclimated with the new office culture–sitting in project meetings to familiarize yourself with areas of study to help direct your career path.
You got along with most of your colleagues with the exception of one person who just seemed to either be aloof or too busy to participate in any sort of social, after-hours office activities.
“What’s his deal?” you asked curiously.
“Eh, don’t mind him. He’s just had a difficult workload since his promotion,” Mirai says during one of your first few office happy hours.
Mirai Kagehiro is a feisty junior analyst whom you immediately bonded with in your first few weeks, even though you were at a slightly more senior position than she was.
“Has he always been like that though? Kind of…I don’t know…aloof?”
“I thought that he’s always been kind of serious when I first got hired a year ago but I heard that he used to come out on happy hours and team-building activities. His team actually said that he’s pretty hilarious once you get to know him. And then…I don’t know. Something must have happened before or after his promotion,” she shrugged.
“Who’s on his team again?” you asked.
“I’m not too familiar with most of them but the one I know is Hobi. He’s usually his deputy on projects. I heard he’s looking into getting another analyst on board full-time.”
“Are you trying to get on his team?” You wondered out loud.
“Nah. His focus area deals more with government-funded contracts. I’m more interested in philanthropic efforts,” she smiled knowingly at you.
You hummed.
“I think he's trying to recruit Taehyung. For a newbie, he’s been doing pretty well in the analyst pool,” she says.
“You seem to know a lot of office intel,” you pointed out jokingly as you took a swig of your drink.
She winked then giggled. “I’m just…really observant. That’s why I got hired.”
“Hey, Mirai!”
“Oh, hey, Jimin! Have you met our newest senior staff member?”
“I think we passed each other in the breakroom the other day,” he smiled as he stuck his hand out to introduce himself. “Park Jimin.”
“Nice to meet you, Jimin. I’m YN,” you smiled as you shook his hand in return. “Are you an analyst as well?”
“Junior analyst right now but I’m moving up to senior analyst next month after my recent performance review.”
“Alright, Jimin-ssi!” Mirai raises her beer bottle to tap it against Jimin’s.
“Thanks! If you know of any project directors looking for mid-level staff, let them know I’m available. I know you’ve got your ear on the ground, Mirai,” he laughs.
“Well! As it happens, YN here is looking into building her team,” she says.
“Is that right?” He asks as he narrows his eyes at you in interest.
You chuckled. “I’m still new, Mirai. I don’t know if Ms. Choi will allow me to run amuck picking and choosing my own people just yet!”
“Oh c’mon, YN! I’ve seen your résumé–it’s very impressive. That’s why Celina Choi got you on board!”
You blushed. “I’m still learning the system. I don’t want to step on any toes!”
“I’m just saying! Once Celina gives you the green light, don’t forget about me,” Mirai says with a laugh.
“Oh don’t worry–you’re definitely on my list, Mirai!”
******
The following week, after the senior staff meeting, you were finally getting your feet underneath you and feeling more confident about jumping into projects full-time. One particular project of interest to you was led by none other than Mr. Standoff-ish himself.
You decided to stop by his office to have a chat with him to ask if he needed somebody to serve as a part-time quality assurance reviewer.
You walked down the extensive hallway towards where his office was located. You found that his door was slightly ajar but knocked to announce your arrival.
“Come in,” he says.
You pushed the door further to let yourself in.
“Yes?” he asks without looking up from his computer screen.
“Hi, I don’t believe that we’ve actually met,” you say sheepishly.
He then pauses his typing then looks up at you, his expression mostly uninterested.
“I’m–”
“I know who you are. I read the office newsletter announcing your hiring,” he deadpanned.
“Oh…uhm. Alright then…” you shift uncomfortably.
“Is there anything that I can help you with?”
“Actually–I was wondering if there was anything that I can help you with. I see that you’re assigned to the Department of Health and Human Services contract bid partnering with the Moonstone Foundation?”
“Yes, and?”
“And, I actually have some experience working with the Foundation. I have some time to help write or even QA your technical approach text?”
He stares blankly at you.
You decided to continue since you still had his attention. “You mentioned earlier at the meeting that your team had some trouble with that section of the proposal. It so happened that I have time to help since I’m not staffed on any full-time projects yet. I’m familiar with what they’re looking for in particular when it comes to contract bids.”
His brows quirk up. “Huh…that…actually sounds like a good idea,” he says.
You gave him a small smile. “Great! Uhm, would you like me to set up a formal meeting or–”
“I can just email you the details. The bid is due next week and there are two points of contention that my team hasn’t resolved. Pricing and the data collection method,” he says.
“O-okay. Yeah, just email me and I can look things over. I can also get in touch with the budget team–”
“No, I’m already handling that. I’ve been talking to Jin regarding the financial proposal and we think that we might already have a solution for it. I just need you to QA the methods section.”
“Great, I can do that,” you assured him.
“Just one thing though–any change that you make will need to be approved by me. I have final say.”
“Sure–that’s perfectly reasonable,” you said.
“Thanks. I’ll keep in touch, YN,” he says as he turns his attention back to his screen.
“Okay. Thanks, Namjoon.”
******
“Where is he?” Jin asks in a panic.
“I…” you were at a loss for words. “I’ve been trying his cell for the last hour. No answer.”
“Okay well, there’s an egregious error here that we need to rectify. Namjoon and I only agreed on 6 site visits and 2 client meetings to scale things back but the write-up still indicates 7 visits and 3 meetings. That will push the budget over,” he reasons.
“I could have sworn those numbers were revised the last time that I looked them over this morning before he left abruptly,” you stated.
“Well–somebody fucked up then and overlooked it. The client won’t sign the contract and we’ll get disqualified if we don’t address their query in the next few minutes,” he says with urgency.
“What’s the holdup, Jin?” your director, Celina, stops by his office. She needed to endorse the final numbers on the revised bid so that Jin could send it to the client… and the clock was ticking.
“Listen, we are inches away from sealing this deal–why are we moving at a snail’s pace?”
“Sorry, Celina. We need Namjoon to double-check the revised numbers and verify them but we can’t reach him,” Jin reasons.
“Well, where the hell is he?” she says impatiently.
“Hey, YN–why don’t you approve and sign off on the revised numbers?” Jin suggests.
“W-wait…I–I’m not the lead here. Namjoon is,” you clarified, restating his earlier condition before letting you help out on this bid.
“But you’re the only senior staff present from this team and have been working with him for the last few days. You practically rewrote the whole ‘methods’ section, right?”
“Well…yes, but–”
“And Hobi is on vacation–so, he’s not even an option at this point. Celina can’t sign off and endorse it at the same time. That’s a conflict of interest,” Jin explains.
“I hear you, Jin but this is Namjoon’s contract. This is a really big deal to him and I can’t–”
“If this was a big deal to him–then why isn’t he here? Why isn’t he picking up his phone?” Jin retorts.
“What do you say, YN? We can’t lose this contract,” Celina pleads.
You released a shallow breath. “Fine. I’ll revise it on my copy, sign, then send it to you so that you can send it to Celina. Good?”
“Excellent!” Jin exclaims.
You jog back to your office and retrieve the bid file and correct the numbers that Namjoon had mistakenly inputted, signed it, then sent the file to Jin.
“Thanks for coming in clutch, YN,” Celina says after she approves then sends it off to the client.
******
The following week, Namjoon was livid. He was supposed to be glad that the client approved the contract–but with a slight twist. The client saw your name and signature on the final form and one stipulation for the contract-signing was for you to take over as project director instead of him–which Celina approved over the weekend.
“Why didn’t anybody call me?” he bellows.
Hobi is left scrambling for an answer. “I—sorry, Namjoon. I was out of the office that day. YN was–”
“I don’t understand why or how she got permission to override my authority?”
Just then you stopped by his door and knocked.
“What?” he yells.
You cautiously walked into his office. “Namjoon–I…I just wanted to explain the mixup–”
“Didn’t I tell you that I have final approval on everything? This was my contract, YN!”
“I-I know that. We tried calling you but you weren’t picking up. Listen–I can clear this up with the client–let them know that you are the project director–”
“It doesn’t fucking matter now, does it? The ink is dry! They want you!”
“Namjoon, I just want to make this right–”
“Please…just…just get out of my office, YN,” he says as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
You glanced at Hobi who was trying his best to keep his eyes on the ground.
“I’m…I’m sorry, Namjoon. I thought I was just trying to help,” you said softly.
“Yeah, a great fucking deal that will do,” he mutters under his breath.
You lingered a bit, trying to figure out whether another apology was warranted.
“Hoseok and I have a lot to discuss–in private–so, if you don’t have anything else, we’d like to get back to work. And I believe you have a new project kickoff meeting to prepare for.”
You purse your lips then nodded curtly before turning on your heel to leave his office.
It’s not like you intended on ‘stealing’ his project. He should have picked up his phone to begin with to avoid all this. You didn’t deserve this kind of hostility from him–you were only trying to help!
******
Two years later…
“This is a good strategy for us. The client is familiar with our work and this approach will elevate our profile with them. I think it’s a sure-win.”
You wrapped up your presentation and hit a couple of buttons on the wall to turn the overhead lights back on.
You look around the room and everyone seems to murmur in agreement.
Then, a very audible scoff from the back.
You kept your cool before you asked, “Did anybody have any questions or concerns?”
You tried to sound as if you weren’t directing the question to anybody specifically.
He cleared his throat then pushed his seat away from the table so he was no longer obscured by one of your colleagues.
“I have a question and a concern,” he says casually as he comes into view.
You fought the urge to roll your eyes.
“So you’re saying that if we apply the same win-themes from last summer that we are guaranteed to get this contract. Well…what if…”
You immediately tune him out even though you kept your eyes on him. What a fucking prick, you thought.
He’s doing this on purpose because during his presentation last week, you raised a completely legitimate concern about his budget proposal.
When he was done moving his mouth, you square your shoulders and give him a tight smile before addressing him.
“With all due respect, Namjoon, I have worked in and led this area for almost three years now. I think I have a pretty good handle on this particular client,” you say confidently.
“Right, but this is a larger contract that we’re going for, isn’t it? We’ve only held small to medium contracts so realistically, this is uncharted territory. Your proposed strategy should be a bit more tailored, don’t you think?”
You flared your nostrils and wanted to run over to him and stab him in the eye with the pen that he twirled in his hand.
“He has a point, YN,” your director says calmly.
Namjoon smirks at his little triumph over you.
“And you know what? I think it would be a great idea for both of you to team up, put your heads together and come up with the perfect proposal.”
Namjoon furrows his brows at the suggestion. He only meant to piss you off a bit and make you squirm.
“Uh, Celina, I wasn’t trying to insinuate anything. I have no experience in this area. All I’m saying is—“
“Yes, but you have a wealth of experience with large-scale contracts. Isn’t that right, Namjoon?”
“Uh…I do,” he says with slight hesitation.
You interject immediately. “But Celina, if his concern is basically me not thinking big enough for this client, my team and I can make those adjustments ourselves. He doesn’t need to be involved—“
“Guys…please—there is no “I” in ‘team’. As a company, we treat one person’s win as a victory for all and a loss as a learning experience as a whole. I think that you both can benefit from each other’s experience, especially since it’s one of our company’s annual goals,” she suggests.
You seethe internally at your boss’s attempt at diplomacy.
“You are two of my top team managers. Let’s build bridges and not tear them down, hm?” And with that, your director adjourns the meeting.
You gave Namjoon a death stare across the room and he did the same to you, coupled with that jaw-tick that annoyed you to no end.
Work together? As if!

“I fucking hate him,” you said through gritted teeth when you arrived in your office. You grabbed one of the decorative pillows that you had on your couch, held it to your mouth and screamed into it.
“YN?”
“What!” you snapped as you whirled around to see Jimin who flinched seeing the visible rage in your eyes.
Your face softened, instantly regretting projecting your anger towards your team member, who was only trying to help.
“Sorry, Chim. Uhm–what’s up?” You tossed the pillow back on the sofa and rounded your desk.
“Taehyung just emailed us. He’s trying to schedule a team brainstorm session. He just wanted to make sure that everyone’s calendar is up-to-date.”
You gripped your forehead, already feeling a migraine brewing.
He was confused. “What’s going on? I thought that our team was taking the lead on this? Did something happen at the presentation?”
“Hey–did you guys get Taehyung’s email? I did not expect that.” Mirai was now standing by your doorway as well.
Deflated, you decided to give them a recap of what went down during the meeting. “Uh–close the door and have a seat, guys.”
******
“Team emails sent, Namjoon-ssi. No responses yet but I made sure to check all of their calendars based on the scheduling assistant tool.”
He sighs in exasperation. “Thanks for doing that, Taehyung.”
“I-I still don’t understand why we’re working with their team. It’s a completely different area.”
He shrugs his shoulders. “I shouldn’t have opened my big mouth,” he mumbles.
“What do you mean?”
He leans back on his chair, reclining it further and squeezes his eyes shut. “Celina had this bright idea…for us to work together. A cross-sectional project, if you will. It’s one of her main goals this year. Merging ideas and teams,” Namjoon trails off.
“So…we’re the guinea pigs for it?”
He looks back at Taehyung with a deadpan expression. “I guess.”
“Namjoonie, I’ve got preliminary results from survey operations,” Hobi interrupts.
Namjoon nods in acknowledgment. He can spend the whole afternoon enumerating all of the reasons why you irritated him but there was still work to be done. He’d have to wait until he got home to pour himself a drink to drown out the day.
******
You squeezed your eyes shut, willing your migraine away as you tried to pay attention to whatever was playing on TV. Suddenly, your phone buzzes with an incoming call.
“Hey,” you answer unenthusiastically.
“Don’t sound too excited, noona,” your brother chuckled on the other line.
You groaned. “Sorry, Jungkook-ah. How are you?”
“I’m doing okay. School is kicking my ass, as usual.”
“Ah…Hell week before graduation, huh?”
“Is it still called ‘hell week’ if it lasts for months?” He laughs.
You laughed right along with him. “The irony isn’t lost on me. But…it’s your senior year so that’s to be expected. You’ll survive it though,” you said.
“I’m looking forward to coming out there for the summer though. I miss you,” he says.
You also missed your not-so-little brother. Ironically, since he’s been away at school, you’ve grown closer and more open to each other as opposed to when you both lived under one roof.
You’ve been supportive of him since he decided to take a bit of a break after he graduates this semester to figure out whether he wanted to go right into the workforce or go to graduate school.
“I can’t wait. It would be great to have family out here again,” you said a little too glumly.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing!” You say as your voice goes up an octave. “Why do you automatically assume that something’s wrong?”
“C’mon, noona. I can tell,” he coaxed. “Also, it would be nice to talk or think about something else other than my undergrad thesis,” he joked.
You hesitated a little then let out a deep sigh. “Well…it’s…the usual.”
He laughed on the other line. “I knew it! Honestly, is there anybody else who riles you up as much as Kim Namjoon does?”
You groaned before rolling your eyes. “He’s just so annoying–”
“Uh huh…and you hate his guts and when he squares his jaw, it makes you want to punch him,” he deadpans.
You scrunch your face at his remark. “You make it sound like I talk about him all the time,” you argued.
“Because you do!”
“I do not!”
He was full-on cracking up on the other end. “Seriously–I’ve never met the guy but every time you mention him, I swear, you could cut the air with a knife with all that tension. I’m shocked you guys haven’t fucked yet!”
“Jungkook-ah!” you scolded him.
You hear him sniggering on the other line.
You scoffed. “Shut up! You are so insane for saying that!”
“Either way, noona,” he says as he calms down, “You probably just need to get some,” he joked.
You cringed at your brother. “Oh my god, Jungkook–seriously. I will hang up on you!”
He apologizes and quits his teasing. “Alright, alright. What else has he done this time?”
******
“Namjoon-ssi?”
“Yes, Taehyung-ssi?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“That depends. Is it work-related?”
“Technically, yes.”
Twice a week, Namjoon schedules a “study hall” of sorts for his core staff in one of the conference rooms to resolve any project issues or just have a quick and direct knowledge-exchange without having to send multiple emails or instant messages. It was also a good time to do quality checks on their programming.
Namjoon pauses his data review and pulls his glasses off.
“Okay. What is it?”
“Why so much animosity between you and YN?”
Taehyung was relatively new to the company and came on board around the same time as you did but hadn’t worked directly with Namjoon until after the incident.
Hobi pretends to continue his line-by-line code review while he secretly listens in.
“She’s...incorrigible, that’s all,” he says with a clipped tone then slides his glasses back on to turn his attention to his screen again.
Taehyung proceeded cautiously. “She doesn’t strike me as the type. I think she’s brought us some new and interesting contracts since she’s been on board. When you allowed me to do some programming on her project last year, she gave me some really helpful—“
“Are you asking permission to switch over to her team, Taehyung?”
“N-no, I wasn’t—“
“So why even bring it up?”
“Sorry, I was just curious.” Taehyung mentally kicks himself for even bringing up the issue.
Namjoon looks up from his screen again and looks at Taehyung.
“YN and I…it’s just–complicated.”
“Namjoonie,” Hobi interrupts.
“Yes, Hoseok-ssi?” Namjoon looks at his peer pointedly.
“It’s been a couple years. Why don’t you bury that hatchet?”
Namjoon looks away from his colleagues, his jaw ticking.
Hobi continues. “If you ask me, I think the whole thing was just blown out of proportion–”
“You think that I blew it out of proportion?” he asks incredulously.
“That’s not what I was getting at–”
Taehyung watches his seniors go back and forth.
“Why are you taking her side?” He almost whines.
“Nobody is taking anybody’s side! I’m saying that you’re both being bull-headed here and if you don’t quit it, we will lose this bid–and you will both regret it,” Hobi reasons.
He exhales deeply. “I…I just really, really wanted that project, Hobi. And then she waltzes in here and snatches it from me.”
Hobi groans at his friend. “Joon–if you had just picked up your phone and weren’t distracted–”
“Don’t remind me,” he snapped.
Hobi lets out a deep breath. “Listen–what is the benefit of this cold war, huh? And, ironically–before she got hired–wasn’t it your idea to do cross-sectional studies so that people aren’t confined to their 'boxes'? You said that this approach broadens everyone’s opportunities and interests.”
Namjoon pursed his lips then poked his tongue against his cheek in annoyance.
“You’ve been wanting to work in the philanthropic area for a while–and YN is the in-house expert on that. Isn’t that why you convinced Celina to hire her in the first place? And then she finally gets here, and you give her the cold shoulder!”
Hobi was absolutely confused when Namjoon decided to skip the customary staff welcome-luncheon on your first day. It was meant to be a formal meet-and-greet with your colleagues. A week prior your start date, he wouldn't stop talking about how excited he was to pick your brain on private foundations and charitable grantmakers.
Taehyung continues to listen to their exchange.
Namjoon sits quietly, chewing at his bottom lip...irritated that his friend dared to talk some sense into him.
Hobi scoffs. “Honestly, this whole thing has gotten so far off-track that sometimes, I forget how this bullshit even started in the first place" He shakes his head and turns his attention back to his screen.
Taehyung then subtly peels his eyes off his seniors and back to his own screen to continue running his data validation.
Namjoon blew out a breath as he contemplated Hobi’s suggestion. Losing this contract would be detrimental to your company’s financial backlog. Not to mention that it would keep people billable for at least five years.
Was it worth lowering his pride?
******
When Namjoon got home that night, he couldn’t get over his exchange with Hobi earlier that afternoon.
A few years ago, you popped up on his radar during a random conference call that he was sitting in, purely just to take notes because of the subject matter. He stayed off-video as he listened in.
One of his colleagues was trying to man-splain his way through the project and you were having none of it. After sharing his thoughts, you promptly cleared your throat audibly and thanked him for his enlightening words–which elicited a chuckle from Namjoon.
While his colleague’s thoughts were more ‘technical’ and demonstrated sound judgment, they bordered on impractical and they were devoid of any emotion.
“Look, Dave–it is Dave, isn’t it? I think that you forget that we’re working with philanthropic foundations here. I get the misconception–multi-millionaires–looking into ways to get a tax write-off by giving away some of their money. But we have to remember the bottom line–this is the private sector we’re talking about. They’re able to bridge gaps that the government is unable to meet.”
That gave Namjoon pause. He looked up from his notepad, at the web conferencing app screen and saw your face in the forefront as the active speaker.
“This is money that goes directly into programs that make a difference to people, which they can see and feel directly and immediately. If you look closely, the program is very intentional, Dave–not something done out of obligation. So maybe let’s do a little less theorizing and calculating like a computer program and do more thinking and feeling–you know–like a human being.”
He was taken aback. Even though you ended your remarks with a warm smile, he knew it was anything but warm.
The following day, he looked up your credentials online and found that you had worked with them previously on a few projects as a subcontractor. You were relatively new to the field but he felt and admired your tenacity and passion in just that single remark.
He knew he had to convince Celina to make you an offer. Your talents were being wasted at your current firm. They put all of their time and energy in bidding for high-value contracts. It was public-policy, sure–and the government offered the larger, longer-term contracts. There was always going to be some politicking involved.
But Namjoon was an idealist. He went for passion-projects–the ones that larger firms usually avoided. He thought then you’d make the perfect addition.
And now, he knew that had to center himself again. Unfortunately, you walked through the company’s doors during the most inopportune time in his personal life–which up until now, he associated with you. But this afternoon, Hobi appealed to his logic–and Namjoon strived to always be cerebral and practical.
The fact was, your company needed this contract. It was the perfect marriage between financial insurance and a passion project.
And there it was. Logic and practicality. He knew what he had to do.
******
“YN?”
You can recognize that baritone anywhere.
“Yes?” You called over your shoulder as he tried to jog after you down the hallway.
“I had some preliminary ideas for the bid. Do you have a few minutes,” he asks as he catches up to you in two strides.
Damn him for being so…big.
“I’m actually going to lunch right now but you can tell me all about it during our scheduled team meeting tomorrow,” you said, quickening your own steps, almost breaking into a sprint.
Why was he approaching you now all of a sudden? He knew that you had a meeting the next day. Why the random, casual conversation? What was he up to?
“I just thought it would be good to get a head start,” he reasons as he catches up to you once more, with barely any effort.
“Right. But isn’t that why we have a scheduled meeting tomorrow?”
It wasn't long before he was now a step ahead of you. “Yes, I know. I was just thinking that–”
Agitated, you glanced in his direction while you continued to walk towards the reception area.
“Namjoon, we’ll have plenty of time for–aah!”
You yelp as you collide with somebody and nearly fall over before they catch you.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry–I…” you look up to see who it was you were apologizing to.
“A-are you alright, Miss–” he says as he continues to hold you up.
“Uh…Jeon. Jeon YN,” you said, looking wide-eyed at the man who held you in his arms.
You steadied yourself and once he was assured that you were stable enough on your heels, he introduces himself.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Min Yoongi,” he says.
“Yes…I know—you. I mean, your work. I’m familiar with your work,” you stammered.
You fought so hard not to fan-girl as you’ve read much of his published research and journal articles. You found him to have such a fascinating perspective on public policy. You’ve even cited his writings in your own publications. Needless to say, you admired him…a lot.
You shook your head in an attempt to get a grip on yourself. “Not to be rude but, what are you doing here?”
“Yoongi–hi,” Namjoon interrupts.
Oh, you almost forgot that he was still here. Almost.
“Hello! Good to see you again. It’s Namjoon, right?”
“Yes. Are you looking for Celina?” He asks.
“I am, actually. She told me to come by around lunch for a quick meeting,” Yoongi says.
“Great. I can take you to her. Just down this way,” Namjoon says as he starts towards your director’s office.
“Thanks, I really appreciate that.”
Before following Namjoon down the hallway, Yoongi turns back to you.
“I’ll see you around, I hope?” Yoongi says with a smile before proceeding.
Namjoon hears this and looks back at your reaction while he waits for Yoongi to catch up.
“Y-yeah…see you around, Yoongi.” You said, suddenly breathless.

“Oh okay…so all we need to do is reconcile our team’s initial budget but use your framework to scale it up. We should be able to stay competitive then,” Jimin summarizes.
“Totally,” Hobi affirms. “That’s the usual template that we go with. Jin actually came up with that framework from that huge Health and Human Services contract that we bid on a couple years ago. We’ve followed the same approach since when it came to our larger bids. We have yet to be edged out by the competition.”
“That’s just the vote of confidence that we needed,” Jimin remarks as he scrolls through the spreadsheet some more. “It keeps overhead costs low but at the same time, doesn’t seem like it burdens the client too much when billing time comes.”
“That’s the idea–100% billable to the client but they don’t get saddled with the administrative fees,” Hobi adds.
Your teams did not hesitate to jump right in to address the matter at hand during your first collaborative meeting. Everyone is buzzing with ideas with you and Namjoon occasionally jumping in–avoiding addressing each other directly as you both sat on opposite ends of the table. There was enough conversation between your colleagues that it didn’t seem to be…necessary.
“Uhh…what about data-use agreements?” Taehyung wonders.
“Oh, we figured out a good system for that, especially for private entities,” Mirai says.
“Nice. Do you have a standard protocol documented? To be honest, we’ve been looking into comparing processes with federal clients. I think the information would be helpful.”
“Of course! YN really set us up nicely when she started in the company,” she says, glancing your way in acknowledgment. “I know you guys mostly deal with government-sponsored data but you can definitely tailor it for public entities. I can send that file to you right now.”
She then accesses the file from her directory to email it to Taehyung.
“I have to say, this has been a really productive meeting, guys!” Hobi remarks while everyone murmurs in agreement. “Namjoon, are we missing anything else from the agenda?”
“We’re coming up on time so if it’s not pressing, we can put a pin on it for now and circle back during the stand-up meeting next week,” Jimin proposes.
“What about the technical approach,” Namjoon piped up.
His question made your ears ring. “And what about it?”
“Does that need to be adjusted for scale-up as well?” he asks.
Irritation started bubbling up inside of you. You felt that he was already overstepping by initiating this meeting. “Technical approach is just fine–director-nim had no objections to it. I thought that the main issue here was the budget,” you said calmly.
“I thought I’d bring it up, you know, since we were already meeting, that we could take a look at all aspects, all angles—“
“Respectfully, Namjoon,” you interrupted. “You admitted a few days ago that the content was not your area of expertise. And last I checked, I am still the technical lead for this effort. So, if you don’t mind,” you looked at him pointedly, silently asking him to stay in his own lane.
He clenched his jaw in response then nodded. “Understood.”
So much for logic and practicality.
“Good. Are we done here? Because, my team and I need to get back to work on the new budget to implement your suggested changes.”
“Fine. Should we just keep in touch then,” he asks curtly.
“You know where to find me,” you deadpanned while you folded your laptop screen down and gathered your things.
He nods wordlessly before you officially adjourn the meeting. The rest of your team awkwardly get up from their seats and return to their respective offices, with Mirai and Taehyung promising to send meeting minutes by the end of the day.
******
You pause typing on your keyboard to stretch the kink in your neck. That hour-long meeting somehow has aggravated the tight knot that has built up in the last few weeks. You considered naming the knot after Kim Namjoon–that would be reflective of what he did to you every time you were in a room together.
Then you hear a soft knock on your door.
“Come in,” you said after flexing your shoulder blades.
The door opens and you find Celina with Yoongi.
“Hi, YN. Sorry to interrupt.”
“No, no, not at all!” Suddenly, you felt the need to fiddle with your hair.
“Have you met Yoongi?”
“Uhm, yes, somewhat. I ran into him yesterday.” More like ‘ran over’ him.
“Good to see you again, YN,” he says politely.
Second time this week. This was odd to you, considering that Yoongi historically preferred to work at academic institutions instead of corporate firms like this–at least that’s what you knew based on his resume.
“So–it’s not absolutely official yet but just giving you a quiet heads up that Yoongi will be joining the firm by next week,” Celina says coyly.
“Oh, wow!” You tried to contain your excitement but were spectacularly failing.
Yoongi was, in the context of your career field, a ‘rockstar.’ His methods and findings were unconventional but they challenged the academic community. He offered fresh perspectives and didn’t rely solely on past trends or typical patterns. There was always a new angle and his publications were lauded by peer reviews.
“I’m so happy that he accepted our offer! We’ve been wanting to expand our inclusion and equity area for years.” Celina says proudly.
“Uh--welcome! Unofficially...We’re so happy to have you,” you said, turning your attention to him.
“Thank you. I’m excited to get to work with everyone. Celina tells me you're a wiz with all of the private sector efforts,” he says.
You chuckle sheepishly. “No, no, she’s exaggerating–”
“YN is just being modest. She is ah-mazing! She’s brought on new clients, new opportunities–not to mention a steady stream of revenue. She’s really planted that flag for us,” Celina brags.
You blushed as your boss sings your praises in front of the person whom you virtually idolized.
Yoongi looks impressed. “By the way, I hear the people over at Packard are giving you a hard time,” he says.
You grimaced. “Oh–yeah. It’s been a bit of a challenge because they have a short timeline but we’re working through some options that we can present to them to meet their requirements and keep them happy.”
“I’m curious…is James Ahn your project officer?”
“Yes, in fact.”
“I can give him a call today, if you want? I’m sure he’ll ease up a bit once he knows I’m with the firm now,” he says confidently.
Your eyebrows quirk up. “Y-you would do that?”
He gives you an enigmatic smile in response.
******
“You seem…different,” Jungkook points out while you were on a video call with him.
“Huh? Different good or different-bad?” you ask as you munched on an orange slice in your kitchen.
“Different…good,” he says tentatively. After a beat, he suddenly busts out giggling. “Holy shit, did you get laid?”
“No!” you shrieked.
“Geez, calm down, noona,” he laughs. “I didn’t realize you were so averse to sex!”
“No, I–didn’t mean it like that,” you rolled your eyes.
Your brother–he was so open about his own sexscapades in college–it just made you cringe. Not because you were a prude but he was still your baby brother–your dongsaeng. The one whom you shared a room with for years and annoyed you to no end.
You sighed. “Okay so…there’s this guy–”
“Come on…just skip to the good parts!” He leans back against his headboard then nibbles on the straw for his milk tea drink as he listens to you.
“He’s…cute. Very smart, confident. Strong and silent type.”
He hums. “Is he vibing with you?”
You blew out a puff of air. “I mean…maybe? I don’t know.”
“What do you mean ‘you don’t know?’ Has he not asked you out?”
“No,” you said quietly.
“So–if you’re interested, why don’t you ask him out?”
“Jungkook—I’m not presumptuous like that.”
“Last I checked, this is the 21st century. Girls can ask guys out now, if they choose. I mean, I get asked out all the time,” he says nonchalantly.
“So you keep reminding me! Anyway, he seems flirty but I don’t want to assume anything.”
“Maybe just ask him out for a coffee? Milk tea, maybe?” He says as he slurps on his drink noisily.
“Is my little brother really giving me dating tips?”
He laughs heartily. “Well, shit! You’re all talk and no action. What am I supposed to say?”
You groaned. “I just—ugh. I’ve admired his work for years. And now, to be working alongside him is…I’m at a loss! I’m basically meeting my idol, Kookie. I wouldn’t know where to begin the conversation!”
“You could ask him if he’d like to come up to see your cat?”
You scrunch your face in confusion. “Wha…but I don’t have a cat. What is that supposed to mean?”
He then starts falling into a fit of giggles.
“I don’t get it,” you deadpan.
“It’s a pickup line, noona!” he says in between laughs. “It’s an upgraded version of ‘do you want to eat ramyeon?’”
You shook your head. “I’m so confused. What does a cat have to do with a sexual come-on?”
“Oh my god, noona. Stop–I’m trying really hard not to feel sorry for you,” he says as he snickers.
You groaned in annoyance. “Fine, so it’s been a while! I’ve been focused on my career and shit–give me a break!”
He calms down and apologizes for his teasing. “Do you know if he’s single?”
You shrugged. “I didn’t see a wedding ring.”
“That doesn't answer my question. Why don’t you just ask him out?”
“I guess I could call the university he last worked at. I think I still know a couple of research fellows there...maybe get some intel,” you wondered out loud.
“Aish, noona. You’re overthinking this! Just fucking talk to him! And you’re a looker–we’re related after all. He’s dumb if he turns you down.”
******
“Hey.”
“Hey,” Yoongi echoes your greeting.
“I just wanted to thank you for talking to Packard. Whatever you said made James a bit more…amenable to our requests since then.”
He chuckles. “No problem at all. James and I go way back from our university days.”
“I see,” you nodded. “Well–either way, thank you. You’ve practically solved a months-long predicament for me and my team.”
“You’re welcome,” he utters, still staring at you as if he was expecting you to say something else.
But then you lose your last bit of nerve and give him an awkward smile and decide to turn back around to your office.
“Hey–it just occurred to me that it was lunchtime. Have you taken yours yet?”
“Uh—no, I haven’t. I usually—“
“Are you in the mood for some carbs?” Yoongi asks.
You grinned.
******
You went to the pizzeria around the corner from your office to grab a couple of slices and sat outside to enjoy the weather.
You learned that Yoongi had been wanting to dip his toes back into the corporate world. Academia was a safe space for him and he was surrounded by mostly like-minded people. In academia, you also didn’t have to answer to a board or any shareholders. You just did the work that you wanted at your own pace.
But your firm reached out to him at the perfect time and soon enough, your company landed one of the most coveted researchers.
“Okay. That all sounds to be fairly basic. But tell me something else about you? Something totally random and not research-related at all. For instance—have you always had a penchant for greasy, complex carbohydrates,” you ask teasingly.
He chuckles as he takes a bite off his second slice–then stares at it affectionately. “I haven’t had pizza for lunch in…I don’t know how long. My ex–she’s such a health-nut. She used to say it pretty much dulls your brain cells for the rest of the day.”
You hummed as you picked up that last bit of information that he divulged.
So he has an ex.
“An ex, huh?”
Was it serious? How long ago did they break up?
“We were together for four years,” he reveals.
He keeps referring to her in the past tense so–maybe it’s been a while. You just go with that thought.
“She might have been on to something there…you published a lot of good stuff in the last four years,” you complimented him.
“I guess…when you put it that way. But,” he sighs. “Right now, I’ve decided that I rather enjoy eating pizza for lunch,” he says as he takes another bite.
“What about your precious brain cells,” you retorted, with a mouthful of pizza.
“Between you and me? I think my brain cells are very much stimulated at this moment.”
He kept his eyes on you as he took another bite while you swallowed.
******
As you and Yoongi part ways to go back to your respective offices, you look up to see Namjoon staring you down from the reception area.
You don’t think he saw anything inappropriate. You were both coming back from lunch and happened to share an elevator cab—with a couple other people, you might add.
Namjoon is giving you a suspicious look and although you could totally ignore him, you had to walk past where he stood to get to your office.
You acted normally and gave him a curt nod to acknowledge him.
He then smirks and decides to walk after you.
“Are you following me?” You called over your shoulder after a few steps..
“Nope. I wanted to go see Jin about something.”
Ah, yes. The finance pod was three doors down from you.
“Just out of curiosity. Have you read our Employee Handbook?”
“Not recently, but I’m sure you have.”
“Yes, I helped write some of the addenda on it.”
“What a shocker. Is it because you have no life at all,” you ask wryly.
He chuckled. “You're so funny! My point is…there’s a section there where the company discourages inter-office romantic relationships.”
God, when did this hallway get so long?
“Is that so?”
“Uh huh,” he says smugly.
“Well, it’s a good thing that rule doesn’t apply to me,” you say.
“You sure about that?” He challenges.
You halt your steps and turn to face him. He stops right before he runs smack-dab into you.
“And if I am, what business is it of yours? You’re not the Director.”
Yes, you did in fact read the Employee Handbook but don’t remember anything about whatever bullshit section that he was referring to. If anything, any corrective action is subject to the Director’s discretion.
You looked up at him–towering over you with his hands on his hips–in his dress-shirt with the top two buttons undone, sleeves rolled up. His hair was usually brushed up neatly but this afternoon, it was a little mussed with a few strands falling onto his brow. He looked…infuriating.
“I’m an Associate Director now so—“
“But not Director. So spare me, Namjoon. If there’s an issue, I’m sure Celina will address it directly with me. She was the one who recruited me after all.”
He smirks, as if privy to some inside-joke.
“Oh, is that so?”
“I didn’t see you at my interview,” you snarked with a raised eyebrow.
He wasn’t at your interview because at the time, Namjoon hadn’t been an official senior staff member yet so he technically was ineligible to conduct candidate interviews.
He scoffs then lowers his face closer to yours. “I’m just saying–be careful whom you–fraternize with.”
You brought your face closer to his–unwilling to back down. You get a whiff of his scent, which was unbelievably dizzying to you. You had never been this close to him but you kept your focus and stood your ground.
“Is that a threat?”
He inhales through his teeth, blinks a couple of times then straightens up and suddenly softens his expression. “I’m…just–looking out for you. For the benefit of the company. We don’t want to lose any good people because of personal issues.”
You jerked your head back and scoffed.
“I’m a big girl, Namjoon. I can handle myself. But thanks for the concern.”
You took two steps back before turning on your heel, leaving him rooted to his position in the hallway.

“Hey, Miss Overachiever, time to clock out,” Yoongi says, as he stands by your doorframe.
You looked up from your screen. You had been trying to crunch numbers most of the day to balance out your budget to fit Namjoon’s proposed revisions and were completely unaware of how late it was getting.
“C’mon–whatever it is, it can wait til tomorrow.”
It was true, though. You weren’t getting anywhere with this spreadsheet and truth be told, your brain was fried so you decided to save your progress and close out of your Excel file.
As you gathered your things, you noticed that Yoongi still stood at your doorway. It was as if he was waiting for you.
“Uhm, Yoongi–I promise I’m leaving,” you chuckle awkwardly. “You don’t have to hang around,” you said as you picked up your purse and your jacket.
“Yeah but, I see that the weather looks nice this evening. I wondered if you wanted to go for a walk.”
Shortly after, Namjoon is exiting his office, wrapping up another late night as well when sees you mid-laugh while you and Yoongi step into the elevator together.
You and Yoongi took a walk and talked some more for over ten blocks–until you reached your apartment complex. It wasn’t intentional but the conversation was going so well that you didn’t want it to end.
“So this is you, huh?”
“Yeah,” you answer sheepishly.
“I’m uh–just a couple more blocks down there,” he points across the street and past a couple other buildings.
You nodded, then considered bringing up Jungkook’s cat pickup line. You blink your thoughts away and decide that this was hardly the most appropriate time.
“Well–thanks for walking me home, Yoongi,” you chuckle nervously while you fish your keys out of your purse.
“Of course.”
“And thank you for all your help this week so far. I owe you one!”
He smirks. “Well, if you must know, I take payments in food…preferably in the early evenings. Say…tomorrow?”
Your breath hitches. “So…dinner?”
He sighs dramatically but playfully. “Alright, YN. If you insist,” he smiles.

“Isn’t that so cool that we got to poach Min Yoongi out of the university?” Mirai says, after missing her shot then retreating back to one corner, leaning on her pool cue as Jimin leans over the table to take his turn at a shot.
“I seriously thought that he was a recluse,” Jimin comments as retracts the stick and slams it against the cueball to make his shot on the corner pocket before rounding the table to plot his next move.
“I guess Celina figured out some magic formula to lure the best of the best into our company.”
Jimin’s head snaps up, turning his attention to his fellow analyst. “That’s the goal, right? To stay competitive?” Taehyung asks.
Mirai chuckles then turns to Hobi. “You make it sound like we work for a Fortune 500 company.”
“And why shouldn’t we be considered as such? We’re economists, sociologists, mathematicians. We study all of these patterns of behaviors all day and make calculated predictions based on those, to help the government and Fortune 500 companies make some crucial decisions,” Hobi argues.
All three juniors stare at Hobi for a minute.
“What? I had a rough fucking day guys, get off me!” He snaps, clearly already buzzed as he takes a huge gulp of his drink.
“Hobi-hyung, is Namjoon-hyung riding your ass again?” Jimin asks, snickering.
“I don’t know what’s up with that guy. First, he was all calm earlier this week and then he makes me rename all of the variables on our survey—all fucking 400 of them! I mean we’re friends but–I don’t know how much more of his moodiness I can tolerate,” he says.
“Is that why YN-noona is hostile towards him? His mood swings?” Taehyung wonders.
“Ah, Taehyungie–it’s too bad you didn’t see Namjoon during his–brighter days,” Jimin says with a laugh.
Taehyung feigns a shocked expression. “You mean to say that he wasn’t always a curmudgeon?”
Hobi crumbles in absolute stitches. “Bro–it may not seem like it now but…he was actually a lot of fun before–”
“Before YN arrived?” Taehyung completed his thought.
Mirai, Jimin, and Hobi look at each other and sigh.
“No, I’m serious, though. They both seem really passionate about what they do. Why can’t they just work together? Without bickering? They almost feel like a married couple,” Taehyung says off-handedly as he takes a sip of his drink.
“Don’t say that out loud at the office, Tae.” Mirai playfully warns as she takes her turn at the pool table after Jimin misses his next shot. “It might uhh–sway some things,” she says with a knowing look.
Taehyung looks confused. “What? What did I say?”
Jimin lowers his voice. “Well, Taehyungie…there's kind of a secret office pool going.”
“For what?” He asks, completely clueless.
Hobi tilts his head. “Wait a sec—I thought that pool died a year ago.”
Mirai laughs. “Well–admittedly, it slowed down for a bit but after word got out that Celina put our teams together? The pot has started growing steadily again.”
“Well, shit! Have I been deliberately left out of the email list?” Hobi exclaims. “You guys need to add me back in!”
“Wait, wait, wait–what pool? What are you betting on?” Taehyung says louder this time.
Jimin grins then wiggles his eyebrows. “How long before YN and Namjoon finally hit the sack.”

A/N: So--Grammys Yoongi would not let me rest and attacked me from all sides. He basically just wrote all of the content for this update! Also, the next few chapters will contain scenes heavily inspired by (actually, some directly lifted) from the movie, Someone Like You (2001). It's a fun, albeit cliché, rom-com but one of my faves! I just thought it would be cute to incorporate some of them in this storyline because I just live for Joon and YN's bickering! If you know the movie...ssshhhh no spoilers!

“I had a really good time tonight.”
“I did, too.” Yoongi says.
You were walking back to your apartment from the subway, after your dinner where you talked about the most random things. Based on the publications and conferences you’ve attended where he’s been a guest speaker, he seemed like such a serious and intellectual person who was only interested in talking about whatever they were currently studying–or something much more boring than that. In reality, he was funny, quick-witted, and had an affinity for dry humor, which you found charming.
“You know, Yoongi…I–I have to confess, you’re not at all what I expected.”
He furrows his brows in curiosity. “Meaning?”
“I don’t know…This is going to sound really weird but I thought you were totally unapproachable and closed off. I haven’t met many people in our field who are as outgoing and just…normal as you are.”
He chuckles. “I know most of us are huge nerds. We get sucked into a study or a topic and it’s easy to isolate yourself from everyone else just to get these theoretical questions answered. But to address your query–I’m just like anybody. I enjoy socializing–to a certain extent,” he laughs. “And…I crave good company as much as the next person–not just because I’m conducting an investigative study on a certain demographic.”
You laughed at that…it was a research joke.
“I think sometimes that’s what’s missing in some of our studies…it’s way too much thinking and calculation. We tend to forget the human element, you know? Especially, feelings and emotions.”
Your brows quirk at his last point. It’s exactly what you’ve been advocating for when you decided to dive into this area of study. Math and science had an underlying predictability. But the emotional aspect is typically left out or not even considered because that would make the work subjective. And in your line of work, most clients prefer objectivity–they want things in black and white–no gray areas–especially for government contracts. They just want to know where the money is going, if it’s doing what it’s supposed to do, and if not, what do the numbers say that they should do?
You nodded. “I couldn't agree more with that. I think that we put way too much stock on objectivity when in fact, we, as researchers, have our own biases. So–I’m not sure how you can just completely extricate yourself from that.”
“That’s a cycle that I’ve spent most of my career breaking. Just–the whole point of, we get the job order, collect that data and conclude that you can do options A or B–and leave it up to the client to decide,” he shrugs.
“But it’s so much more than that, isn’t it? The fact is, there are real people whom we’re interviewing and studying. They shouldn’t be treated as random tallies on a sheet.”
“I like where you’re going with that, Miss Jeon.”
You stopped at your building’s front entrance, keys already on-hand.
“It’s something that I try to instill within my staff as well,” you smiled proudly as you stood there, facing one another.
He stares at you in awe. “Where have you been this whole time? I feel like we could have collaborated on so many good things.”
You chuckled and shrugged your shoulders. “We just needed to wait ‘til the time was right, I guess.”
He took a couple of steps towards you–he was…inappropriately close but you weren’t moving away nor stopping him.
Well, I hope you’ll forgive me if I can't wait for the right time to do this.” His lips land on yours. They were incredibly soft and plush as they moved against yours. You sighed softly into his mouth as he briefly slipped his tongue into yours–just to get a quick taste before he pulled away.
Screw Namjoon and his stupid Employee Handbook.
You tried not to sound too breathless. “Would you like to come up and see my cat?” You suddenly blurted out.
Yoongi furrows his eyebrows in confusion. “I beg your pardon?”
You try not to panic. “I meant, coffee. Would you like to come up and have some coffee?”
He gives you a gummy smile. “Sure, coffee sounds good.”
Once you unlock your security gate and walk through the front door and into your kitchen, you start to grab a couple of mugs and call out to him over your shoulder while you sort through some K-cup pods.
Unaware, he saunters behind you.
You’re startled when you find him standing next to you. Nervously, you ask, “Uh–I have a couple options here–just tell me what kind you like?”
“I like anything full-bodied,” he says in a dangerously low tone.
Your lips twitch. “O-okay. Brew temperature?”
He moves in closer. “Hot.”
Your heart was pounding now. “Sweetener?” you ask breathlessly as he closes the gap between you.
“Mm–don’t need it. Not around you,” he says before he crashes his lips into yours, pressing you against your kitchen counter. His tongue caressed your mouth in a slow, sweeping motion that had you leaning closer for more.
Things escalated quickly and you moved into your bedroom.
It wasn’t long before you felt the back of your legs hit the side of your mattress.
He lowers you into it, keeping his lips locked on yours. Feeling his full weight on you turned you on like you couldn’t describe. His hands snake up your thighs as you moan into his mouth.
Be careful whom you fraternize with.
You gasp then recoil abruptly from Yoongi.
“A-are you okay? Did I do something wrong?”
The fuck? Why is his voice in your head at this moment?
“If-if you changed your mind, that’s totally fine. Just say so,” Yoongi says reassuringly as he caresses your cheek.
You shake your thoughts away. “N-no. I meant, no, I haven’t changed my mind. I want this. I just wondered if you’d be okay with switching it up?”
He regards you with renewed interest. “Switch it up, how?”
You pushed up against him and shifted slightly until you had him pinned to your mattress. You sat up then straddled his hips, the motion hiking the bottom of your slip-dress up your thighs.
His eyes, filled with want, drank you in while you sat on top of him. “Well, alright then,” he bites his lower lip.
He watches as you pick up the hem of your dress and bring it up and over your head, tossing it to the side, leaving you with just your lingerie on.
He sighs softly as he slides his tongue across his bottom lip.
“You have way too many clothes on, Mr. Min,” you point out.
“And what should we do about that?”
You curled all ten fingers onto his shirt and with one swift move from you, he watched his buttons fly all over the place.
“Much better,” your lips curved into a smile.
His hunger for you rumbled and it wasn’t long before he sits up to kiss you again–more aggressively this time.
He pulls away for a moment only to take his wallet out of his back pocket to retrieve a foil packet from it before sealing his mouth over yours again.
You barely feel him reach behind you to unhook your bra then quickly slipping it off you. He leaves a trail of wet kisses down your neck and to your sternum. With a slight bend of his neck, he ran the tip of his tongue over your nipple in a slow, teasing flick which elicited a harsh gasp from you.
He didn’t give you time to process before he fully wrapped his lips around your breast, sucking hard.
“Ah, fuck,” you breathed out, your body almost tipping over from pleasure before caught you, tilting you back into his arms before shifting to your other breast, giving it the same amount of attention.
Your clit throbbed and practically begged for some kind of friction that you started, grinding your hips against his cock–which you could already feel was straining from how hard it felt underneath your still-clothed core.
Sensing your impatience, mouth still sealed on a nipple, he slides a hand between your legs. His fingers slips past the lacy material and starts to rub between your needy folds, making you cry out hoarsely.
You could have cum right then–it really has been that long.
“I can’t wait anymore, Yoongi,” you whined.
He pulls away from your chest only to slip two fingers into you. “Tell me what you want, YN,” he asks gruffly.
“You. I want you in me now,” you said a little too desperately, grinding your hips against his fingers.
He watches your face contort in pleasure while his digits continue to pump in and out of you. “You’re so wet,” he whispers before he nips at your bottom lip.
“Yoongi–please…I want you to fuck me.” You barely recognized your voice as you begged him to put his cock in you.
He withdraws his hands slowly to lift you slightly off him. You take the opportunity to shed your soaked panties while he unzips his pants and rips the foil packet with his teeth.
You climb up on top of him again just in time to pull his cock out, taking the condom and slipping it down his length. His eyes roll to the back of his head as he drags out a deep moan while you pumped him slowly.
“Do you want to ride?”
You gave him a small nod as he rested his hands on either side of your hips while he lays flat on the mattress.
He guides you while you ease yourself down onto him. He closes his eyes and flexes his hips to meet yours, filling you, stretching you, as he exhales.
“You feel so good,” he murmurs as your walls clench around him.
You rise again, taking more of him in, feeling a little too drunk with the power you currently had–watching Min Yoongi slowly coming apart beneath you. You place your hands on his shoulders for support until you take him to the hilt.
You started to roll your hips slow–getting used to the sensation of him filling you. He counters your rhythm perfectly in sync—all thought and reason out the door. You pick up the pace and it wasn’t long before you were completely lost in pleasure.
He sits up, hands moving up from your hips to your arms, keeping a firm grip on them shortly before he withdraws slightly then thrusts into you sharply, causing you to cry out.
Your head lolls sideways and back, as he fucks in and out of you. My god, he does that so well.
You open your eyes, stare down at him, your breathing ragged, and he’s staring back at you, eyes blazing.
“So fucking good,” he mouths.
“Yes,” you rasp.
He groans loudly, closing his eyes again, tipping his head and leaning it against your forehead.
“I’m so close,” you managed to say between pants.
“Yeah? Are you gonna cum all over me?”
“Hmmmmfuck, yes…don’t stop,” you mewled as you clenched even tighter around his cock.
“I can’t–too good…” he stutters as he continues to thrust his hips against you.
Seeing Yoongi undone is enough to tip you over the edge. You cum audibly, collapsing on top of him.
“Ahh, fuck…” he groans as he finds his release, holding you still.
Your cheek is nestled on his shoulder, catching your breath, trying to get your pulse back to normal.
He smooths your hair, and his hand runs down your back, caressing you as he calms his own breathing.
He lifts you and eases out of you. You wince as he does. After he discards the condom, he leans forward and kisses you softly.
“You’re amazing, you know that?”
Sitting up on your bed, you tilt your head slightly and gaze up at him, your expression skeptical. As he stands in front of you, he sees the look you give him and frowns. He bends down slightly towards you and nuzzles his nose to yours.
“I mean it. You are amazing, YN,” he says again, his tone emphatic.
You smiled as you felt something shift within you. You had to pinch yourself. Suddenly, this man–someone whom you had admired, revered for years, was in your bedroom in all his post-sex glory. It was as real as the sweat that beaded on his forehead.
You kiss him gently and let yourself fall into him.
******
The following morning, before stepping out of your apartment, you tugged at his wrist.
“Listen–about last night…not that I have any regrets or anything,” you began.
He straightens out, waiting for your next thought.
“I hope this doesn’t complicate things for us at work,” you ask tentatively.
“Why would you think that?”
You exhaled sharply. “I guess you could say that some people like to keep things strictly professional, you know?”
“I have no problem keeping things professional,” he says matter-of-factly.
This placates you. “Okay. I just wanted to put that out there–”
“YN, what we do during our private time is nobody’s business. And it shouldn’t be–that’s why it’s ‘private.’ I like spending time with you and I hope you feel the same?”
You gave him a small smile.
He took it as a good sign. “Okay.”
“I just don’t want it to be a whole thing at work, you know?”
“I understand what you mean. And I want you to know that we’re on the same page. Okay?”
“Okay.”
“Now…do you know of a good place to get some breakfast around here?”
You chuckled. “Yes, in fact, I do.”
******
“I’m so sorry about your shirt,” you giggled.
You were coming off a high after a quick bite to eat at the diner around the corner from your place. You decided to take the long way home–just to extend this time with him a bit more. You walked side-by-side, with his arm around your shoulder and your arm around his waist.
“I mean–” He glances down at it. It was only done up halfway since you had ripped off the top three buttons.
“They never really had a chance to begin with,” he chuckles. At least he had a jacket on–or else this walk would have been more scandalous than intended.
Just then, you passed a thrift store and looked over to find some dress shirts for sale.
“Hey, let’s get you a new one,” you said, motioning over to the display rack.
“What?” He laughs. “You don’t think this is a good look?”
“It is, but–” you bit your lip, trying to rein in your thirst. “We wouldn’t want you to look like you’re doing the walk of shame, right,” you teased as you picked up a black, pinstriped, collared button-down off the rack.
He eyes it for a second. “Alright then,” he says as he takes his wallet out.
“No, no,” you stopped him. “I got it,” you smiled, walking into the store and paying at the register.
He gets into a dressing room, puts the shirt on right away and you both walk out of the store, hand in hand.
“Thank you,” he utters as his arms wrap around your waist, pulling you closer to him and giving you a quick peck on the lips.
“You’re welcome,” you said as you smiled through your kisses.
Somehow, out of the corner of your eye, past Yoongi’s shoulder, you spot somebody familiar.
You suddenly withdrew your hands from Yoongi’s chest and gently pushed him off.
“Shit, just act normal,” you mutter under your breath.
“Huh?” Yoongi is utterly confused.
“Good morning!”
Yoongi whips his head around to find Namjoon pulling up his bike. He stops by the curb, next to where you both stood while balancing his bike with one leg planted on the ground, eyeing the both of you.
“Hey,” you and Yoongi said at the same time.
“Please don’t let me intrude!” Namjoon says with a sly grin plastered on his face–his obnoxious dimples front-and-center.
“No! Not at all,” you exclaimed a little too loudly. “We were just uhh–” you point and turn to Yoongi while you scramble to find the right words.
“We–I mean–I just ran into him at this store,” you stuttered and chuckled nervously. “I happen to live right up here and was taking a walk…and, and then I saw Yoongi browsing through some shirts here. He looked like he needed some help,” you explained unnecessarily.
“Yeah, uh–I guess looked desperate for a woman’s opinion after all,” Yoongi randomly says, trying to figure out where you were going with this.
“And we got to talking and he just told me that he also happens to live in this neighborhood– which I absolutely had no idea whatsoever! Who knew?” you babbled further.
Namjoon just stares back at Yoongi then back at you.
You cleared your throat and gave Yoongi a look. “Anyway, Yoongi, didn’t you say that you had a thing? That you were going somewhere?”
He hesitates for a bit. “Y-yeah. Yes–I do. It was–great running into you, YN.”
“I-It was great running into you, too, Yoongi. A-and you too, Namjoon. Have a great rest of your weekend,” you stammer before Yoongi walks away.
“See ya,” Namjoon says to Yoongi before turning his attention back to you, giving you a knowing smile.
You try to scramble to save the situation. “What a coincidence, huh? First, I run into Yoongi and then you happen to be biking around this neighborhood, too? Such a small, small world!”
“Uh huh,” he says smugly.
Fuck. The jig is up and he knows it.
You exhaled sharply. “Fine. So we’re kind of seeing each other. Happy?”
He doesn’t say anything and just looks at you, his shoulders vibrating up and down from the laugh that he was trying so hard to stifle.
You groaned. “We’re…not necessarily telling anybody at the office, okay? And I would hope you’d keep this to yourself for the time-being?”
Namjoon snorts then looks away briefly. He clears his throat and looks back at you.
“What? What are you thinking?”
He shrugs his shoulders. “I’m thinking the same thing you are, YN. How you and Yoongi will live happily ever after with your matching Hyundais and goldendoodles,” he says condescendingly while he cackles.
Afterwards, he shifts his weight to get back on his bike and starts to pedal away.
You were seething. “Did you have any friends growing up?!” You yelled out at him.
“Better hurry–I think I see him waiting for you around the corner over there,” he calls out over his shoulder as he rides away further.
******
Director-nim Celina, is quite the accomplished woman. She looked young for her age but she’s had a lot of experience under her belt.
She received her Ph.D. from Yale and after a few years working as part-time lecturer at local universities and shifting from one policy research firm to another, she finally built up her own capital and started her own firm.
It helped that she had already built up a great reputation in the field so once she found her footing, other great minds didn’t take long to join the company.
One would think that when you worked in this field, you were constantly behind-the-scenes like a hermit so you didn’t have to worry much about the way you looked. It’s statistics and research, for chrissakes!
But not Celina Choi. To promote her firm in its early stages, she had to look and dress the part.
She wore her dark tresses short, which stopped right above her shoulders. She always looked like she had walked straight out of a salon with a blowout.
And though she didn’t put heavy makeup on, she frequently wore a bold lip. Fire-engine red, tangerine, oxblood, magenta—it was her signature, so to speak. Anything that would draw a listener’s attention to her mouth was a good strategy for her.
She wore tailored pantsuits, sheath dresses, pencil skirts—for a woman in her 40s, she could give the younger ones a run for their money.
She worked the annual conference circuit and networked to no end. She strategically partnered with larger firms as a subcontractor and managed to lure out other talents from there.
Some people might think that she was playing dirty by poaching their best researchers from them but Celina’s pitch was simple: come work with me and not for me.
It was the same pitch that she used on all of her recruits–one of which was currently in deep conversation with her in her office.
You stood a ways down the hallway with your ankles crossed over the other and tried not to stare at him while they spoke but it was hard to pry your eyes away from him, especially after memories from the weekend plagued you all day.
He stayed over til mid-day Saturday after you had breakfast at the diner around the corner from your place—leaving only after he ate you out and fucked you in the middle of your kitchen.
When Celina turns away from him to retrieve something from her desk, he glances at you through the glass wall. As if reading your dirty thoughts, his lips curve into a slow, sexy, almost devilish smile.
You smile back at him, suddenly feeling hot under the collar before he turns his attention back to your boss, who was trying to show him something on her tablet.
“You look pretty happy there.”
His deep voice startles you and knocks you back to reality. “Why? You got something against people who are happy?”
“Not at all,” Namjoon grins sarcastically. “As long as you’re not stepping on anybody’s toes.”
You leaned in, pouting mockingly. “Aww…do your toes hurt, Namjoon?”
He chuckles then lowers his voice. “You wish you could climb up on me and step on these toes,” he says to you.
You gasp at the comment, taken aback for a moment then suddenly burst out laughing.
He cocks an eyebrow at you. “Should I take that as a ‘no’?”
You puckered your lips and hummed. “It’s more of a–’Thanks for the offer, but not if my life depended on it,’” you hissed.
“Well, if it isn’t my top team managers!” Celina exclaims as she and Yoongi approach you and Namjoon, halting your bickering.
You both straighten your postures and smile innocently at her like students trying to act perfectly behaved in front of the principal.
“So, I’m just checking in to make sure that the proposal is ready to go to the client soon? I know the deadline is not optimal since it’s the same week that we’re supposed to go on our company retreat–but I’m confident that if anybody can pull this off, you two can. Am I right?”
“Yes!” Namjoon says.
“Oh, totally,” you replied.
“Good! Also, I want to get a final look at it once I get back from the annual conference—which, Yoongi, so graciously agreed to assist me with. Nothing like showing off our new rockstar to attract the cream of the crop to our firm, huh?”
You and Namjoon nod in agreement.
Celina turns to Namjoon. “You’re going to this year’s retreat, right?”
“Yes, I am,” he confirms.
“Okay–just making sure because you’ve skipped the last two. It would be nice to have 100% attendance there, especially with senior leadership.”
“You can count on it, Celina.”
“Excellent. And, YN–are you up for defending your Office Olympics medal this year? I know Jin would love to take a crack at it again since he took the silver medal last year,” Celina says.
Before you could answer, Namjoon jumps in. “Not if I have a say in it.”
Celina’s lips curve into a slow smile. “Oh-ho-ho…looks like we’ve got a great matchup! I almost forgot that you won gold in those previous years, Namjoon.”
You interjected before he could agree. “That’s only because I wasn’t with the firm yet,” you addressed him directly.
He scoffs and narrows his eyes at you. “Is that so?”
“Oh yeah. You’re up against some stiff competition, Kim Namjoon.”
“Alright–let’s save all the trash talk for the games, huh?” Celina tries to intervene and steps between the both of you. “But I love the competitive energy! See, this is why I put your teams together. You’re both just so into it! I love it! I want to feel the same level of passion when I do the final read-through of your proposal.”
You both nodded, biting the inside of your cheek. Celina then turns her attention back to Yoongi as they finalize their plans for the upcoming conference. “So anyway, I was thinking—we should strategize which lectures we’re attending because I think that it would be more efficient…” she trails off as they both walk away from you.
Yoongi steals another glance from you and you give him a small smile in return.
Out of the corner of his mouth, Namjoon clears his throat then lowers his voice to almost a whisper. “You know I won’t take anything from you lying down.”
You grinned cockily. “You wish you could take me lying down,” you mumbled back to him.
His jaw ticks and a low growl escapes his chest as you flip your hair and back away from him, clearly pleased with the effect of your last words.
