ELV Batteries Are The Backbone Of Modern Infrastructure ELV System

What is an ELV?

As per International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)terminology, a circuit or a system that uses less than 50V AC or less than 120V DC is defined as Extra Low Voltage. Generally, these units are not connected to the main power supply of the infrastructure. Essential units that have lower power requirements come under ELVs and these units are expected to operate at all times hence they are isolated from the mainstream power supply. These ELV systems are further classified as SELV, FELV, and PELV from the application perspective. The low-risk factor of shock and the safety it provides to the adjoining circuits makes them an integral part of any sensitive installations such as labs, hospitals, etc.

A Separated Extra Low Voltage system is galvanically isolated from the earthing circuit and hence a fault in those lines will not bring any catastrophe. Medical instruments and swimming pools are the prime examples to use these ELV as per the norms of the local governance in Qatar. The cost associated with adequate double insulation, and high-quality raw materials is high but easily outweighs the safety aspect it provides in its implementation. A special audit is required on the functional side of a SELV as per EN 61558.

The PELV is similar to the SELV but it can have a ground connection for protection. However, the design of the unit should ensure low contact to high power units, like having thicker insulation between the primary and secondary winding of the transformer. A typical example is a metal-cased computer in a data center that works on a Class I power supply. In contrast, FELV doesn���t have any sort of protection and draws power from semiconductors or autotransformers. Typical examples include a toaster or a signaling unit in smoke alarms. Also, there is an RLV, Reduced low voltage which is primarily used for corded hand tools and any temporary lighting arrangement, especially in construction sites.
