Living in a small home might seem cramped, especially if you’re more accustomed to larger space to begin with. There are some ways you can make the best of living in a small house though. Make Space Outdoors
If you have space outside, you probably won’t feel very cramped. If you ever do, all you have to do is go outside. Depending on how much space you have on your property, consider adding a patio. There are a plethora of ways to style a patio to make it your own. Adding shade, furniture, and decoration can be great ways to make your patio a comfortable and inviting space. You’ll want to make sure you take into account the climate you live in when choosing patio furnishings. Not all furnishings are suitable for all climates.
Make the Best of a Small Home: Maximize Storage
One of the tricky things about downsizing to a smaller house is figuring out what to do with all of your stuff. One of the tricks is to maximize your storage space. You can use furniture in creative ways to store your belongings. There are a lot of multipurpose furniture pieces these days that are designed to double as storage space or be transformed into other furniture. There are desks that fold out into beds, for example, and captain beds that come with drawers and shelves built into them. You can also add floating shelves to your walls. These can be great for storing odds and ends, decorations, books, or other smaller-sized items.
Make the Best of a Small Home: Make Space Look Bigger
You might also try using illusions to make space look bigger. Certain colors make space look bigger, while others make it look smaller. How you use colors matters too. You might find that painting the ceiling the same color as the walls makes the room look taller. You can also use light to effect as well. Strategically placed mirrors that reflect natural light can brighten a room and also give the illusion that the room is bigger. Be careful where you place them though. You don’t want to get an eyeful of reflected sunlight. You also might try playing with the arrangement of the furnishings. Layout and placement of couches and sofas can make a space look more open or closed off.
There are a lot of things homeowners can do to make the most of a smaller home. Strategic interior design can make a room appear bigger. You might try strategic methods of storing your belongings. And there’s always the great outdoors. Making a small piece of it your own can help you feel more free. The most important thing is to make your home a place where you’ll be most comfortable.
