Webs
I have started committing fully to the process of, while I am reading a book or into a topic, creating a web of each element that interests me via Clip Studio.
This formed, like many academic practices, as a solution to a problem. I wanted to see which ideas/people/events were linked to each other, and by making the connection, what new ideas emerged. Sort of like doing chemistry in the dark, I would grab two elements on different sides of the spider diagram, and ask the question ‘how are these connected?’.
Sometimes, there is none, or at least none that do not make me come across as someone rambling to themselves on the bus. Though, when there are, its impossible to un-see the connections.
Originally, this process was done with mostly my (digital) notes, with some multimodal elements such as screenshots.
What stopped me from embracing this type of learning method in the past was 2 primary concerns.
Searchability: with this type of web, there is no ‘ctrl + f’ to quickly find specific words or themes, meaning that for a quick reference it does not do as well as a word document. Though, I have come to learn that this is its strength. By looking at the web, and following its connections, new ideas are continuously forming with each inspection. In a way, it is a living document.
Finite Space: since these files exist as images, there is a limit to how large they can become. This is due to: the time it takes to save an image causing potential corruptions/crashes, what file types it can be saved as becomes reduced as the file size increases, space between connections becomes too compact. Etc.
There are solutions to the finite space problem, such as using an alternative software that is built for spider diagrams, but that always tends to result in some form of freedom-restriction, e.g. dealing with its method of classing/hierarchy, not having certain mediums allowed.
Also, from an authorship standpoint, using these systems felt less me. Less personal. I want to be able to doodle, be silly, or include images of people and concepts on tangentially related without the entire system feeling off.
Then, something happened to me which had not happened before. I realised, that a lot of my works, from lots of separate university modules and projects, had two shared elements — the theme of chance, and the medium of film. As such, I decided to write a PhD proposal looking into a merging or these 2 domains.
With this, I had to write a 6000 word piece in a short time, so I did not have as much time to prep and make a new web like I normally would. So, I instead looked at all of my previous webs I had made in the past. To my surprise, I was making connections between different webs, and a new meta-web formed. This, in effect, pulled the bandage off of worrying about sticking to one shared web with everything.
...
When reading around ‘chance’, I had stumbled upon the nouveau réalisme movement. It sounded interesting, so I did something relatively new to me, and I just started a new document looking into the same topic of ‘chance’, but from a different place. Rather than writing out my ideas first, I copied and pasted multiple Wikipedia articles.
When I read about an artistic work that sounded interesting, I would look it up and paste it in for extended context. Same with locations, publications, etc. It moved more away from word connections, to a type of Dada collage of things.
...
Now, when it comes to reading a book, I do the same thing as the Wikipedia articles.
Read the work
Create Physical Note
Insert both ‘the book’ and ‘the physical note’ into digital web.
Make connections between concepts within web.
Create digital notes around the nature of the connections, as well as include other image elements where appropriate.
...
I’m sure this process will evolve further in the future, but I am having a lot of fun with it.
I hope this maybe gave you some ideas of how to manage theme connections. Let me know if you have any thoughts regarding this!

From Berlin's Avant-Garde to London's Financial Heritage: The Evolution of Cultural and Technological Integration
The Museum für Zukunft, an avant-garde collective with roots in Berlin, began by exploring interdisciplinary connections among art, science, media, and everyday life. This exploration led to the transformation of spaces, notably in Cologne, where the members encountered walls adorned with scratch-off letters that intriguingly migrated from the walls to their bodies. This phenomenon was part of the brown room, a re-enactment of a scene from Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film "The Third Generation," within Dominique Gonzales-Forster's installation. The resulting portraits, captured in a multiple of nine photos, were presented in a black cardboard box with titles in scratch-off letters, contributing to the exhibition at allgirls.
Botschaft e.V., founded in 1990, operated out of various empty buildings in Berlin-Mitte. Initially, they squatted the WMF building, then moved to Kronenstraße 3, where they opened the "Friseur" club in a former hairdressing salon. The collective included artists, musicians, theorists, filmmakers, and computer experts such as Bettina Ellerkamp, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Jörg Heitmann, Christoph Keller, and others. Botschaft's projects ranged from exhibitions and lectures to music performances and discussions, always at the intersection of art, science, media, and everyday life. One of Botschaft's notable early events was "Dromomania" in November 1990, coinciding with German reunification. This event sought to integrate art with political interest and local publicity, operating from the squatted WMF building. The collective eschewed individual authorship in favour of group dynamics, continually evolving their practices.
The "Richtig 92" event series explored the understanding of reality and documentation, highlighting the intersection of traditional media, art, and philosophy. Projects like "Museum für Geschichte" and "Fishing for Documents" attracted diverse audiences and linked thematic exhibitions, underscoring Botschaft's focus on interdisciplinary cooperation.
Botschaft's approach often blurred the lines between cultural work and social engagement. They rejected the notion of becoming a formal institution, focusing instead on content-driven activities. The "Friseur" bar and WMF club exemplified their integration into Berlin's cultural landscape, offering spaces for film screenings, video projections, music performances, and political lectures. As Botschaft expanded its reach, it influenced peripheral groups within European art centres, reinforcing its avant-garde status. Their projects, such as "Beirut/NY/Berlin" and "Museum for Future," highlighted the ongoing, process-oriented nature of their work. This emphasis on continuity and practical engagement allowed Botschaft to navigate the changing cultural and political landscape of post-reunification Berlin.
Drawing inspiration from Botschaft's interdisciplinary and evolving practices, the proposed London Stocks and Shares Museum at 6 Coleman Street will similarly explore the intersections of history, finance, and technology. The museum will honour Brian Winterflood, a pioneer in integrating computers into stock trading. Just as Botschaft's projects delved into cultural and political themes, the London museum will chronicle the history of the stock exchange, from its origins in London's coffee houses to its modern-day operations. The museum will employ interactive exhibits and digital installations to convey the complexities of financial markets, much like Botschaft used diverse media to communicate their interdisciplinary explorations.
This new museum aims to be a dynamic space for learning and reflection, bridging past and present through innovative presentations. The influence of Berlin's cultural movements and Fassbinder's cinematic legacy will inform the museum's design and narrative, creating a space that not only educates but also engages visitors in a dialogue about the evolution of finance and its impact on society.

Kata Lepsia: The diary (2020/21) Collaborative project with writer Virág Katalin Balogh
after the equinox my space but not my time is how i thought of spring now i know it’s neither one nor the other 2020/10/25
Kata Lepsia is a single, middle-aged woman from Central Europe, who is living in the epoch of crises and catastrophes that has inauspiciously been named after the human race itself. The most recent of these crises has turned her life completely on its head, sentencing her to interminable house arrest. What else is there to do at a time like this apart from observe what’s happening around us and within us?
Kata Lepsia is the fictitious alter ego of two artists, and the material presented here, in the form of Kata Lepsia’s diary, is the outcome of a year of shared reflections and creativity — a kind of productive ping-pong. Geographically, Virág Katalin Balogh and Katalin Tesch live at a distance from one another, which significantly influenced the way in which the project developed. Writer Virág Katalin Balogh recorded Kata Lepsia’s thoughts, feelings, dreams and anxieties in the form of diary entries, which she occasionally sent to Katalin Tesch, who responded to the words with spontaneous, journal-like photographs. A selection of this material, focusing on autumn and winter 2020/21, is published here.
At a certain moment, Kata Lepsia took on a life of her own. The shaping of her personality is inextricably bound up with her surroundings — and the surroundings of her creators. At the end of 2019, she embarked on life amid the anxieties caused by global warming, but neither of her creators could have foreseen the events of 2020 and the new kinds of distress they would entail. Her inner world meets and merges with external reality, and because of her isolation, this world hovers permanently on the border between the rational and the irrational. One of the central elements of her internal conflict is how to survive in such a way that she does as little damage to the environment as possible. How can she continue taking pleasure in everyday life without polluting yet more rivers, without causing suffering to yet more creatures, and without spreading a dangerous virus? Her permanent efforts to achieve a balance between self-control and self-care will be familiar to us all in today’s chaotic world.
The texts were translated from Hungarian to English by Rachel Hideg.
