So Cody is the baby of the Byrne clan, was born in Ireland and moved to the US shortly thereafter. The gist of their move was trauma based, and while Cody may (or may not) remember much of this part of his life, child of 2-3 as he was, he'd know the general reason they left; their father. For the sake of clarity; their father was an alcoholic who physically abused their mother, one night Adeline stepped in to defend her and Adie's actions landed their father 6ft under. They fled that night, north to their aunts house and from there, a few days later, they were on a boat to America.

Adie & Cody have 2 older brothers, both of which are long since dead and both of which Cody wouldn't have much, if any, knowledge or interaction with as they were both out of the house by the time he was born. They both went off to war and neither came back. Adie would have told Cody stories about them, so he knows of them, and in some sense would feel some closeness to them but beyond that they didn't mean much to his life as a whole.

So once they arrived in America they traveled across the country by car, to their mother's second sister in Idaho. It was there they'd stay for years, and it was there that Cody would grow and eventually come into his powers as a witch. Their mother's side of the family were mostly all witched (their mother was one) but Cody was the only of the Byrne children who'd turn out as a witch, the rest of the kids took after their father (skinwalkers). Cody was his mother's son; sweet and caring, he was raised in their little rural farming community where his powers (whatever you want them to be) were nurtured and honed.

Eventually Adie would hit her teenage years (a few decades late lol) where she'd fall in with "the wrong crowd". This was around the time their mother passed from complications of a deep chest infection that she'd been suffering with for years. Without their mother around to ground them, Adeline's feet would grow itchy to move on. Adie's feet followed love, and a few years short of Cody graduating she'd grow too restless, following along after a boy, to Seattle.

Cody went with, unwilling to stay in Idaho, and a teen himself, capable of making his own decisions (ish lol.)

He'd finish school in Seattle, the scene everything that bolstered a renewed sense of self for Cody himself; it was everything that he felt he was at the time. Not some sleepy town he'd come from, but the buzz of a city with eclectic people and views. It was here that Cody found himself, and it was also here that Cody's view on sexuality expanded (he was formerly played as gay, but you're free to do whatever you want with his sexuality so long as he maintains his BF of the time - bi, pan, etc.)

Shortly after Cody graduates, Adeline once more gets itchy and winds up moving to California - shortly before this happens, she's forcefully mauled by the boy she chased to Seattle, which is what prompts her to flee - this move however, sees Cody stay behind in Seattle. It's the first time the siblings have been apart and while they stay in touch, the separation is felt on both ends. During the few years they're apart Cody's life does what all young people's lives do: it twists and turns, it rises and falls as he figures out what and who he is as a person, separate from his sister.

All of this time is up to you, as to what he does and becomes; I would prefer he stays away from the whole drug dealer scene (I just have a lot of dealer stuff otherwise, and it's a bit overplayed within my plot circles already lol. Dirty cop or maybe a crooked PI, might be good to lead him into bounty hunting?)~

All this comes to a head however, as Cody winds up dead (he'll be in his early 30s.)

How and why is up to you, but it'll rock Adeline's world entirely and she'll make the trek back up to Seattle to claim his body & see him moved back down and buried in California. At this point she's finally settled into a pack and is their omega, so her life is finally stable and steady and she's "found her place" if you will, so his move to burial in LA is something that will more or less mark where she belongs. This would have all happened in 2018-ish, so when he lands back on Earth & contacts her again can either be shortly after that, or relatively recently, up to you!

His future is entirely open, as is the way they meet again - I'm 100% open to, and love, past threads so I'm tots fine writing this out if you'd like. Adeline ran into a bit of a rough spot in 2020, when she was essentially kidnapped back to Seattle by the "boy" she chased, the same that mauled her, and his pack. They'd keep her for 2y. She wound up pregnant while there, which is what helped her to flee (along with her bestie, Grace) so she also has a little girl now. Traumatized by this whole ordeal, she's since given said child, Samantha, to Adrian & Jake (her alpha & beta) to raise as their own. She's still in Sammi's life, as would Cody be~

As for Adie & Cody, their relationship has always been and should be again, very close. They're the annoying siblings who tell each other everything and are always there for one another: they'd do anything for each other. Anything. The sort who always end a call or a meeting with an I love you.

 “no.”  dahlia rolls their eyes, before turning back to look at the shelves around them.  iarla sent them for... something, they weren’t paying attention.  just knew they had to pick something up from whatever magic bullshit shop the fae was interested in this week.    “i am here to get parcel for iarla.  said it was ready.”  clawed fingers skate over the edges of shelves, and ice blue gaze flicks to the keeper behind the counter.  there’s something in his scent that makes their nose tingle...

Ah, the rather energetic fae that had been a bit of a whirlwind compared to his own usual levels of energy which were comparable to ‘don't talk to me unless I've had coffee’ but without the coffee. Mitchell never knew how to handle the energetic ones and by the time he managed to adjust to them, they were usually already out the door.

It was why the exchange had stuck with him, never mind the contents of the order had been unusual, at least for his business. There were crystal caves nearby yes, but you had to know how to get into them and how to harvest the crystals without causing any damage or angering whatever lay in the depths of the cave. He'd never been foolish enough to go look, but he knew it was there, could sense the creature or protective deity or whatever it was, lurking and watching his every move in case he did something disrespectful and needed to become monster food. It's not like he could defend himself properly if that happened, having no innate magic of his own.

He'd never considered it, but the only reason he can get in there is because as a natural channel, he is often letting the magic of the environment flow through him, becoming part of it in a way, and thus not being considered a threat.

But anyway, the crystals.

“Right, that one. Most of what I could get was Amethyst, I don't like venturing too deep lest I can't get back out, but I got a couple other ones too.” Iarla hadn't said it mattered which type so long as the quality was good, and he'd been paid in advance which had gone a long way towards him being willing to put in the time and effort.

He turned back briefly to check the shelf behind him, where he'd stored the box, protected by a talisman he now carefully dismantled. Well really, the best way to dismantle one of his personal talismans without setting them off was to use his blood to disrupt the runes. He easily slices through the top layers of skin on the pad of his thumb and rubs it across the paper, sucking on the digit briefly to close the cut again before putting the deactivated talisman in a lock box to burn later. Better not leave your blood lying around and all that.

That done he picks up the box and sets it on the counter. It's not too big, maybe a bit longer than a foot, but still fairly heavy due to the crystals.

Week 11: Digital Communities and Trolls - Understanding Social Media Conflict

While social media has proven to be a positive outlet in promoting digital connection, creativity and expression, there is a dark side of social networking. Social media is also the home for cyber bulling and online harassment, although you have the ability to unfollow or block profiles that 'troll,' the negativity on social media can be extremely overwhelming, hurtful and scary.

Dahlberg (2001) describes 'trolls' as online individuals aiming to embarrass, anger, and disrupt merely for their own amusement, but sometimes is driven by more serious motives including political goals. In today's society, social media is heavily relied on as a "tool to support significant social interaction or enable teenagers to communicate and engage in meaningful online communities" (Boyd 2014, p.6); The users heavy reliance makes it difficult for them to separate reality from the digital world, therefore receiving online hate and harassment take a large toll on their mental health and self-worth.

There is a quite a different between trolls and online harassment. Where trolls is more about somebody targeting individuals for their own amusement, online harassment can be defined as repetitive threats or other offensive behaviour, sent online to youth or posted online about the youth for others to see (Wolak et al. 2007, p.52). It is estimated that "online abuse, harassment and cyber trolling costs Australians $3.7 billion annually in terms of medical bills and loss of income" (Milne 2020): $3.7 billion to repair an individuals value of their own self-worth due to the unnecessary, ignorant and hurtful comments from a stranger behind a screen.

Australian journalist, Ginger Gorman, wrote a book called 'Troll Hunting,' that she says is about "trying and bringing a humanity to it all, to the victims and the perpetrators" (Valentish 2020). Gorman's book takes a look inside the world of trolling, with interviews from social media experts, journalists and even trolls themselves, in order to see where the hate that is projected online comes from.

Gorman's book also talks with those close to the late TV-presenter, Charlotte Dawson; Dawson's suicide in 2014 was rumoured to have been caused by the amount of online hate she received from internet trolls. 2 years before her death in 2014, Dawson had spoken out about how she was hospitalised after an attempted suicide due to the amount of death threats she had been receiving on the internet, she said "It just triggered that feeling of helplessness when the trolls got to me" (Herald Sun 2012). Her death in 2014 sparked a major conversation about cyberbullying and raised awareness of the dangers spreading online hate can do.

To leave off, I would like to leave you with some positive tips and strategies to help when dealing with online harassment and trolls on social media:

Don’t retaliate: most times this is the exact reaction the troll wants, don’t give them the satisfaction!

Report: you can report the messages or comments to the social media platform you are on, or tell a trusted individual in your life that you think can help.

Take a break from the online world: sometimes a break from social media and technology is needed, there's no need to be online if you aren't feeling safe.

Block the account: you are able to block any account that is harassing or sending you hate.

Don’t doubt yourself: Don’t feed into what these comments say, the only person who is able to judge you is you!

Anolis Newsletter VII is Now Published!

Following on from the last Anolis Symposium, held at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, Miami FL, from 17-18 March 2018, we solicited submissions for the next issue of the Anolis Newsletter. We now finally have them all together! The newsletter represents an informal forum for the presentation of data and discussion of theory relevant to anoles. It serves three functions: to allow investigators to inform others of their current and future research; to provide an outlet for speculation and theoretical musings perhaps inappropriate for publication in more formal venues; and to give an opportunity to present data and ideas that otherwise might never be distributed. As with previous newsletters, there is a general request that nothing said herein be quoted without the authors’ express permission.

Spanning 333 pages, including 47 separate articles, I can now bring you the Anolis Newsletter VII!
