This book is a treatise on cultural globalization and the global political economy. By introducing the transnational public domain in the study of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the book goes beyond existing theoretical frameworks involving both the 'clash between civilizations' and the 'time-worn division' of the world into North and South. It advances a new focus on the theoretical and empirical elements that canvass global cultural behaviours and reactionary attitudes to the expanding Chinese economic norms, cultures and values in different national contexts.
Readers of political theory, global political economy, globalization, international relations, political sociology, cultural sociology, public policy and foreign policy analysis will find interest in the book. Whereas new nationalism couples with globalism, both concepts are rediscovered through various socio-economic contexts of BRI policy discourses, which produce conflicts, solidarities, new economic partnerships, and cooperation and resistance as types of contemporary nationalism. The new nationalism is approached as a dual-sided, relational, and dialectical phenomenon which readers will capture by paying particular attention to both the global and local scales of the social responses to the BRI.

Dallas' Best Things To Do, Oct. 4–Oct.10
Wednesday, Oct. 4 Dr. Brian Williams at Interabang Books Maybe you know his name because Dr. Brian Williams was the trauma surgeon in charge of the Parkland ER on that night in 2016 when five Dallas police officers were shot and subsequently died from their injuries. Or, perhaps you know him from his current run for Congress in Texas’ 32nd District. If you know him as the author of The Bodies…

14 days until WE FREE THE STARS, and I'm excited to reveal the gorgeous artwork Macmillan commissioned from the inimitable @elithien! I couldn't be more in love with this spectacular piece—the angst! the longing! her dress! the blood vial! the lush, rich colors! I'm thrilled. We're giving away these exclusive art prints with each signed + personalized copy ordered through Interabang Books or GC Reading, so I suggest you get on that because quantities are limited AND the cut-off date to order is January 15th; no exceptions! PLUS you can submit your pre-order receipt to claim a limited edition enamel pin! Find all the links you need here. As always, thank you all so much. I know I say this a lot, but pre-orders are so crucial to a book's success. These sales accumulate and are tallied on release day, giving a book a greater chance of landing on the bestselling lists (like the New York Times!), being shelved (digitally, too) in prime locations, and more. So thank you 🖤

Blog Tour + #Review: TIGERS, NOT DAUGHTERS by Samantha Mabry!
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the Algonquin Young Readers blog tour for Tigers, Not Daughters by Samantha Mabry, which releases TODAY! I am so excited to tell you all about this book and share my review with you. Let’s get started!
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: Tigers, Not Daughters author: Samantha Mabry publisher: Algonquin Young Readers release date: 24 March 2020
The Torres sisters dream of escape. Escape from their needy and despotic widowed father, and from their San Antonio neighborhood, full of old San Antonio families and all the traditions and expectations that go along with them. In the summer after her senior year of high school, Ana, the oldest sister, falls to her death from her bedroom window. A year later, her three younger sisters, Jessica, Iridian, and Rosa, are still consumed by grief and haunted by their sister’s memory. Their dream of leaving Southtown now seems out of reach. But then strange things start happening around the house: mysterious laughter, mysterious shadows, mysterious writing on the walls. The sisters begin to wonder if Ana really is haunting them, trying to send them a message—and what exactly she’s trying to say. In a stunning follow-up to her National Book Award–longlisted novel All the Wind in the World, Samantha Mabry weaves an aching, magical novel that is one part family drama, one part ghost story, and one part love story.
Add to Goodreads: Tigers, Not Daughters Purchase the Book: Order from Samantha’s local indie bookstore, Interabang Books in Dallas, TX, and she will sign it and personalize it for you if you wish! Early Praise for Tigers, Not Daughters
“Move over, Louisa May Alcott! Samantha Mabry has written her very own magical Little Women for our times. This is no family of tamed girls but a clan of fierce and fighting young women who will draw readers into their spell. A celebration of the bonds of sisterhood and of the ways we heal by reaching beyond our losses, our brokenness and fears to the love that holds and heals.”
–Julia Alvarez, author of How the García Girls Lost Their Accents
“A moody and unflinching examination of the gritty, tender and impossible parts of people that make them unforgettably whole. You don’t read Samantha Mabry’s books so much as experience them. Ferocious and gorgeously crafted. I loved it.”
–Courtney Summers, New York Times bestselling author of Sadie
“A ghostly tale of revenge and the strength of the sisterly bond…The author adeptly portrays the claustrophobia of living in a small town and being under the watch of an overbearing patriarchal figure—in fact, the male gaze is the true enemy in this novel, and it's only when the young women join forces that they're able to break free of its oppressive ties. Mabry's (All the Wind in the World, 2017, etc.) third novel has echoes of The Virgin Suicides. The protagonists are Latinx. The evocative language and deft characterization will haunt—and empower—readers.”
–Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)
“Borrowing elements of magical realism and Latinx folklore, this is a story that is often uncomfortable; in its quest to explore grief, family, and the traumas inflicted by each, it lays its characters utterly and unforgettably bare.”
–Booklist (Starred Review)
“Mabry speaks gracefully to the transformative power of grief and the often messy (even violent) road to letting go.”
–Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)
“Little Women meets The Virgin Suicides with a magical realist twist in this evocative and lovely novel… Similar to the March sisters, the Bennets in Pride and Prejudice, and the three sisters in King Lear... Mabry’s lyrical style weaves themes of sisterhood, death, and romance along with Shakespearean inspiration and paranormal elements to create something magical. This novel is sure to appeal to fans of Mabry’s other works, and could serve as an introduction to magical realism for those unfamiliar with the genre. An engaging, heartfelt exploration of the multifaceted inner lives of teen girls and sisterhood.”
–School Library Journal (Starred Review)
“This is a quietly searing tale of sisterly love and family secrets, of a grief so big it swallows its mourners up, blotting out the future and distorting the past…Mabry’s prose continues to be elegantly simple and profoundly evocative…an appealingly unsettling infusion of ambiguous faith and unexplained miracles.”
–Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (Starred Review)
About the Author
Tumblr media
Samantha Mabry credits her tendency toward magical thinking to her Grandmother Garcia, who would wash money in the kitchen sink to rinse off any bad spirits. She teaches writing and Latino literature at a community college in Dallas, where she lives with her husband, a historian, and a cat named Mouse. She is the author of A Fierce and Subtle Poison and All the Wind in the World.

My 5-Star Review
I was thrilled to be offered the chance to take part in this blog tour with Algonquin Young Readers, and I’m so glad I jumped on board, because I love Tigers, Not Daughters! This book is loosely based on King Lear, which has always been my favorite of Shakespeare’s plays. (It’s been years and years since I’ve read it, though, so don’t feel like you have to know anything about it before reading this book.) Ms. Mabry says this of the title and how she got the idea for this book:
“Tigers, Not Daughters is a phrase from Shakespeare’s King Lear. In the play, it’s used as an insult, hurled by Albany at Lear’s selfish and disobedient daughters. When I recently heard that phrase spit out with such venom during a production, it struck me—how could I write a story in which this wasn’t an insult, but, in a way, praise? I’ve always been of the mind that some parents frankly deserve to be disobeyed, and I’m sure many young people would agree.”
I was immediately on board with the idea that being a tiger” didn’t have to be an insult; instead, it could be a strength. Why shouldn’t young women be allowed to show their claws? Especially when their father is an often-drunk despot who keeps them tethered to him by playing on their sense of responsibility to him, even as he shows no responsibility toward them.
What I love so much about this book, as slim as it is, is that we get to see such growth in each of the three Torres sisters, as they gradually make their way to becoming those tigers of the title. Each starts with their own particular weakness, whether it be Jessica’s boyfriend, John; Iridian’s fear of leaving her house and exposing any part of herself to others; or Rosa’s gentle, quiet, and kind nature that has people thinking of her as only ever gentle, quiet, and kind. Throw in some magical realism and a visit from the ghost of their dead sister one year after her accident (falling to her death from her bedroom window while trying to escape) and you have an incredible story. By the end, Jessica, Iridian, and Rosa have all figured out how to grow and show their claws, each in their own way conquering their weaknesses and fears. My favorite quote from the book is from Jessica and sums up that growth (seriously, if I were not months away from turning 45 I would have this tattooed somewhere I could see it every day):
“An angry girl is allowed to be angry.” (p. 220 of ARC)
I wrote down a series of words immediately upon finishing the book that pretty well sum up my thoughts: lyrical, fierce, gorgeous, feminist, sublime. I hope these adjectives will convince you to pick up this beautiful story of sisterhood and of owning one’s inner tiger. Be fierce, be strong, be angry--let the Torres sisters be an inspiration to you.
Rating: 5 stars!
**Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher for purposes of this blog tour. This review is voluntary on my part and reflects my honest rating and review of the book.
Thank you for visiting today! Remember, stay healthy by staying home if you can, and practicing social distancing if you cannot. We will get through this together.

#JJHO listener Julia K wrote in to let me know that @interabangbooks, the beloved indie bookstore of Dallas, was pretty much destroyed by a tornado last week. While, for obvious reasons (pictured) they won’t be open for a bit, their ONLINE store is up and running. If you wanted to buy a #MEDALLIONSTATUS from them today (or any book, any day), bit.ly/JHBANG gets you there. Photo courtesy TOM FOX of the @dallasnews. 2018 Year in Review
Rules: Answer questions about 2018 and tag some people!
I was tagged by @carolsparklefists and @wizzardhowl . Love y’all!
TOP 5 FILMS YOU WATCHED IN 2018
Here’s the deal. I didn’t watch Phase 3 of the MCU until this year. So, of course, GotG Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok rocked my world. But I’m not going to count them for sake of variety.
Lawrence of Arabia
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Black Panther
Logan’s Run
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
TOP 5 TV SHOWS IN 2018
Marvel’s Runaways
Seinfeld
Star Trek (I sporadically/randomly watch re-runs of the 1966-2005 shows)
Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger
WKRP in Cinncinati (I haven’t watched a whole lot but I love it)
TOP 5 SONGS OF 2018 (ACCORDING TO SPOTIFY)
So #1 is supposed to be Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks, which I love, but I think it’s only because my dad and I share a Spotify account.
The Night by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits
She’s Gone by Daryl Hall & John Oates
Maybe I’m Amazed by Paul McCartney
Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) by George Harrison
This top five has to do with my Awesome Zune Library playlist, which has songs that I think fit GotG. Here are some songs that are less related to my GotG fantasies...
Sister Golden Hair by America
Don’t Let Me Down by The Beatles
Mr. Tambourine Man by Bob Dylan
My Sweet Lord by George Harrison (I loved this song before I saw GotG2)
My Cherie Amour by Stevie Wonder
TOP 5 BOOKS YOU READ IN 2018
Books? What are those? I needlessly scroll through Tumblr in the little free time I have because of school. I have been attempting to read Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. Lawrence, that’s about it. So here’s the top stuff I read in school.
Sweat by Lynn Nottage (play)
The Money Shot by Neil LaBute (play)
Hey Whipple Squeeze This by Edward Boches and Luke Sullivan (literally a textbook)
Driver’s License (Object lessons) by Meredith Castile
An Octaroon by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (play)
Five good/positive things that happened to you in 2018
I started therapy and anti-depressants

I found a church that I like, and embraced liberal christian theology that is affirming of my sexuality and my view that the Bible isn't inerrant
I got back on Tumblr and have had an extremely positive experience (I've made great friends and found awesome communities)
I went on some really awesome trips, one in which I rode a train along the ocean to see an old friend, and another where my music friends and I spent the week together at a festival bonding, practicing, and performing

Tagging anyone who wants to do it :)
1. Who were you named after?
The biblical figure of the same name.
2. When was the last time you cried?
I went to spiritual direction at school and completely lost it while telling a nun about my problems.
3. Do you have kids?
If I did at my age I’d be on a TLC show, so no...
4. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
Their manner of speaking (tone, vocabulary, accent if any, etc).
5. What’s your eye color?
Green, but somewhat more complex than it sounds. (There are a lot of hints of other colors in them.)
6. Scary movie or happy ending?
Happy ending all the way!
7. Special talents?
I play violin and viola and I’m good at memorization and reading books in freakishly short amounts of time. I also do theater at my school and was recently a lead role (best experience of high school to date, hands down) but am not all that great. And I like to think I’m an okay writer but that’s probably wishful thinking...
8. Where were you born?
California
9. Hobbies?
Music as mentioned, acting, video editing, reading, writing (fic and original - I just finished an original novella and it sucks but it’s my baby and I love it), is learning stuff for fun a hobby?, figure skating
10. Do you have any pets?
Two labradors and they are the loves of my life. For reference:
Tumblr media
11. What sports do you play?
Figure skating, although I might quit because I have too much going on. I’ve loved it for a long time but it’s just not my priority or passion anymore.
12. Height?
5’5”
13. Favorite subject in school?
I LOVED my AP Environmental Science class last year. Apart from that, history and English. ANYTHING BUT AP CALC. I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A BLOWTORCH TO AP CALC.
14. Dream job?
conservation biology! I’ve loved animals and the environment my entire life (I remember being thrilled at two to learn that there were snakes living in our yard because I loved them so much) and for a long time I wanted to be a marine biologist to help conserve species, but that required more math than I was willing to take on. Conservation bio allows me to pursue the same goal but the major requires far less math, and APES made me want to take on a more environmental science-based approach to that career path so it fits. It could involve travel to exotic locales for field work as well so that’s a plus. And I’d love to write on the side (memoir, anyone?) if possible. But there are at least three other jobs I can see myself being just as happy in. I have waaaaaay too many interests to ever pursue all of them.

Announcing the Attack Surface tour
Tumblr media
It's been 12 years since I went on my first book tour and in the years since, I've met and spoken with tens of thousands of readers in hundreds of cities on five continents in support of more than a dozen books.
Now I've got another major book coming out: ATTACK SURFACE.
How do you tour a book during a pandemic? I think we're still figuring that out. I'll tell you one thing, I won't be leaving Los Angeles this time around. Instead, my US publisher, Tor Books, has set up eight remote "Attack Surface Lectures."
https://read.macmillan.com/torforge/cory-doctorow-virtual-lecture-series/
Each event has a different theme and different guest-hosts/co-discussants, chosen both for their expertise and their ability to discuss their subjects in ways that are fascinating and engaging.
ATTACK SURFACE is the third Little Brother book, a standalone book for adults.
It stars Masha, a young woman who is finally reckoning with the moral character of the work she's done, developing surveillance tools to fight Iraqi insurgents and ex-Soviet democracy activists.
Masha has struggled with her work for years, compartmentalizing her qualms, rationalizing her way into worse situations.
She goes home to San Francisco and discovers her best friend, a BLM activist, is being targeted by the surveillance weapons Masha herself invented.
What follows is a Little Brother-style technothriller, full of rigorous description and extrapolation on cybersecurity, surveillance and resistance, that illuminates the tale of a tech worker grappling with their own life's work.
Obviously, this covers a lot of ground, as is reflected in the eight nights of talks we're announcing today:
I. Politics & Protest, Oct 13, with Eva Galperin and Ron Deibert, hosted by The Strand Bookstore
II. Cross-Medium SciFi, Oct 14, with Amber Benson and John Rogers, hosted by Brookline Booksmith
III. Intersectionality: Race, Surveillance, and Tech and Its History, Oct 15, with Malkia Cyril and Meredith Whittaker, hosted by Booksmith
IV. SciFi Genre, Oct 16, with Sarah Gailey and Chuck Wendig, hosted by Fountain Books
V. Cyberpunk and Post-Cyberpunk, Oct 19, with Bruce Sterling and Christopher Brown, hosted by Andeersons Bookshop
VI. Tech in SciFi, Oct 20, with Ken Liu and Annalee Newitz, hosted by Interabang
VII. Little Revolutions, Oct 21, with Tochi Onyebuchi and Bethany C Morrow, hosted by Skylight Books
VIII. OpSec & Personal Cyber-Security: How Can You Be Safe?, Oct 22, with Runa Sandvik and Window Snyder, hosted by Third Place Books
The events come with either a hardcover and a signed bookplate, or, with some stores, actual signed books.
(those stores' stock is being shipped to my house, and I'm signing after each event and mailing out from here)
(yes, really)
I've never done anything like this and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about it. Book tours are crazy marathons - I did 35 cities in 3 countries in 45 days for Walkaway a couple years ago - and this is an entirely different kind of thing.
But I'm also (very) excited. Revisiting Little Brother after seven years is quite an experience. ATTACK SURFACE - a book about uprisings, police-state tactics, and the digital tools as oppressors and liberators - is (unfortunately) very timely.
Having an excuse to talk about this book and its themes with you all - and with so many distinguished and brilliant guests - is going to keep me sane next month. I really hope you can make it.
