TP Bennett's Haus on the Ridge informed by vintage camera
In this exclusive video produced by Dezeen for architecture firm TP Bennett, the studio's principal director explains how its latest residential project was designed to meet Passivhaus energy standards.
Designed by the studio's principal director Doug Smith and project architect Sam Clarke, the house in Kent, UK, belongs to Smith and his family.
Called Haus on the Ridge, the building's design is influenced by the Brownie camera designed by Eastman Kodak in the early 20th century.
British architecture firm TP Bennett have designed a residential home in Kent inspired by a vintage Brownie camera. Photo by Edmund Sumner
Mimicking the construction of the Brownie camera, the understated house features two solid wings that flank a lens-like central glazed element which offers views of a nearby valley.
"We wanted to create this transparent centrepiece that you look straight through, almost like a lens," Smith said in the video.
The 10-metre-wide living space includes a large central living room and kitchen, while the four bedrooms, bathrooms, a utility room, a plant room and a hallway are all located in the wings.
The house incorporates two solid wings that flank a central glazed element which acts as the house's lens, similar to a Brownie camera. Photo by Edmund Sumner
The project has been built to meet Passivhaus standards – a set of high-performance building standards that originated in Germany in the late 1980s.
Buildings that meet Passivhaus standards are highly insulated and use little or no heating or cooling technology, and are therefore highly energy-efficient and sustainable.
TP Bennett describe the building as "airtight", with rockwool quilt insulation and triple glazing used throughout its construction.

"It's like wrapping a tea cosy around the building," Smith explained.
According to Smith, building to meet Passivhaus standards prevents energy waste.
"We consume a lot of energy and the Passivhaus concept allows us to reduce that consumption and also not to waste it," he said. "I think going forward, that's got to be a major consideration for new houses."

EightyFen by TP Bennett is a "refreshing alternative" to traditional city towers
"I've always had a love of concrete," Smith said.
"It's not particularly environmentally friendly in terms of the production of the concrete. But once it's there, it's very sustainable because it's got great longevity and once the building is heated up, the concrete holds that heat."

A spiral staircase attached to the building's exterior leads up to a roof terrace and garden, as well as a prefabricated pod that acts as a studio.
A sewing studio and a spare bedroom are contained in two further pods that stand on stilts, accessible through an elevated walkway from the main building.

TP Bennett is a British architecture firm with offices in London and Manchester. It previously designed EightyFen, an office building set in London's Square Mile.
The firm is also behind the design of Windmill Green, a 1970s office building in Manchester that it retrofitted to create an "ultra-sustainable" mixed-use office.
Photography and video footage is by Edmund Sumner, Tom Dalton, Dael Poulter and Oscar Oldershaw.

ALL BLACK ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS THAT WILL INSPIRE YOU TO ADAPT THIS MODERN MINIMAL TREND!
Tumblr media
Black is my color. It is the most beautiful color of all. Black is a really strong and powerful color, that most of us often run away from! Especially when it comes to using it in our homes. However, when implementing correctly, black can radiate a very modern and minimal feel, creating an aesthetic that instantly leaves you feeling calm and balanced. This collection of all black architectural designs is proof. That when used boldly but smartly, black aesthetics can be a delight! I love these clean and minimal designs. What about you? Are you team all-black architecture too?! Appareil Architecture Canadian architectural firm Appareil Architecture built an all black architectural design house, deep in the woods of Quebec. The black home is accompanied by a matching though smaller cabin! Named Chalet Grand-Pic, both the structures have been clad in corrugated steel which is painting in shiny black. Silver metallic roofing accentuates the dark structures. The two sections are connecting by a cedar deck. Creating a warm and combined space that’s perfect for weekend getaways! cliffs of Mendocino Peeking out from the cliffs of Mendocino, California, Suspended House hovers in midair. In his rendering, Eshtiyaghi conceptualizing Suspended House after choosing its cliffside location. To ensure that the structure would hold tight and remain in place. Eshtiyaghi looking to using five high-tensile support cables and a large foundation mast. The large mast works by balancing the forces of gravity and gently ‘tugging’ the A-frame cabin towards the mast for it to remain upright. In addition to the large foundation mast. Five high-tensile support cables securely lodge the cabin in place from all sides. The land-lock parts of Suspended House remain stable in place and offer a cozy respite from the more daunting facades of Suspended House. a place to be by oneself Blackbird is a getaway cabin that exists as “a place to be by oneself.” The getaway cabin, an angular structure of black mass combining with tinted glass and a jagged, haphazard display of metal beams, resembles a spaceship that can land in any environment. As conceptualizing, Blackbird has landed in a Georgian forest clearing, amidst dense fog and textured pine trees, where it appears right at home. From the outside, below a white, cloudy sky. Blackbird’s asymmetrical frame has a tough exterior constructing from metal to provide a sense of security. Meant to dissolve the barrier between nature and the interior, the tinted glass windows evoke a feeling of privacy. Like a lookout that allows its residents to remain hidden while scanning their surroundings. Miyazaki At the foot of the rolling hills in Miyazaki, Japan sits a minimalist black house designing by Atelier Kento Eto for a family of four. This black house blends in with the scenic mountains and at the same time stands out in the neighborhood of Kadogawa. The modern loft is wrapping in black corrugated iron and is a perfect square 8×8 meter cube. That reveals little from the outside. The dark exterior is a contrast to the bright white interiors. That open up to the light and nature with two large sliding doors. The client wanted to accommodate their desire to host their friends into the floor plan. So the house has been building around a double-height entertaining area which is where the gatherings will happen. The ground floor features an open plan living, kitchen. And dining area on one side and a bathroom, washroom, and storage area on the other side. Studio Edwards Studio Edwards’ Base Cabin gives the micro-living designs a whole new angle – literally! The angular shape of this tiny house on wheels makes it stand out while still being subtle. Inspiring by the typical A-frame cabins in the woods and airstream trailers. This little home is built on a tri-axle trailer. “The A-frame is structurally efficient and uses less material than conventional portal frame buildings. Mute in its appearance and clad in black rubber makes it blend into its surroundings,” says the team. Don’t be fooling by its size, the Base Cabin comes fully equipped with a queen-size bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchenette. The angular paneling makes for a cozy bedroom setting with the A-frame roof. the island of Stokkøya On the island of Stokkøya, Norway lies a blackwood hill cabin. Surrounding by the sea to the west, and lush green landscapes to the east. It is a summer haven for a family of five. Expanding over several levels, the wooden cabin provides impressive views of its surroundings and is artfully balancing with them. The Kappland Arkitekter firm designing the cabin to ensure it perfectly merges with its surrounding landscape. Showcasing a typically Nordish minimal aesthetic. The cabin instantly washes you over with a sense of calm. “Perched on piles at the front and anchoring on a concrete slab at the back. The building gently hovers on the slope, leaving hardly any footprint,” said the architecture studio. The leveled structure of the building creates several layers within the interiors of the cabin as well. Gwendolyn Huisman and Marijn Boterman It’s always interesting when all black architectural designs and create their own homes. It is a chance for them to unleash their creativity as they see fit, build that dream design they always wanted to build and that is exactly what Dutch architects Gwendolyn Huisman and Marijn Boterman did when creating this skinny black brick building that is their home. The house, while looking opulent in black bricks from outside houses hidden windows and a huge indoor hammock to add fun to the place! The Livit Studypod The Livit Studypod is a futuristic black-box style cube is the best all black architectural designs that you can place anywhere you want and focus on your work, study or even health! This composite cube structure works as your bedroom, home office, or study table and is designing for outdoor use. Easy to place on your backyard, garden, or anywhere with a view, the black-tinted harden glass window gives an unobstructed view of your scenery. Since the cube is a closed structure, it keeps you safe from the weather across the year. Measuring 2.15 x 1.8 x 2.1 meters, this cube is perfectly sized for you to style it for your comfort, improving your headspace and keeping you stress-free. The pod does weigh 700 kilos but it also comes with optional wheels that let you move it and settle down for a quick change of scenery! Sasha Moloko of Line Design Studio Often we find that the interior of the house and its exterior are designed separately, that the color scheme and theme chosen for the outside are not reflected on the inside. But this is not the case for the Pine House designed by Sasha Moloko of Line Design Studio. With a unique covered window replacing the traditional open terrace space, this house uses the color black to highlight its interiors while the black exterior creates a stark contrast with the surroundings! Harriman State Park (New York) In the hills of Harriman State Park (New York), plans were made to build a beautiful, contemporary-style hobbit hole known as the Black Villa. The house is stunning inside and out, especially its most eye-catching feature: the luscious grass-covered roof. Green roofs have been growing slowly in popularity over the past decade, due to their economic and environmental advantages. They can reduce energy usage by 0.7% by providing natural insulation against heat and maintaining temperatures that are 30-40°F lower than conventional rooftops. The Black Villa also decreases the need for electricity by using skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows. Gensler, Perkins and Will, HDR and Jacobs are few of the best architectural brands in the united states of America. They make the best designs of homes and offices. But this all black architectural designs are mind blowing.   Read the full article

Tumblr media
Log Cabin Kits are delighted to offer a wide range of garden log cabins and timber buildings in a variety of sizes and prices. All our log cabins are manufactured to high standards using fully interlocking logs in thicknesses of 34mm, 44mm or 68mm, single or double-glazed windows and doors. From 2018 we are now offering an upgraded external door and window option using domestic quality units, the same spec as would be used in a new build house or officeblock.
                              Reinforced Roof Option
There are a number of reasons why you may want to construct an upgraded, reinforced roof structure:
·         Plans to use a heavier roofing cover such as slate or concrete tiles
·         Location - possibility of heavy snow falls
·         Intention to insulate the roof area with enhanced levels of insulation
The list isn't endless and there are potential cross overs between reasoning - but whatever your thoughts are to consider the reinforced roofing design, this can be provisioned from the factory of, from the diagram below, you can source materials and install locally.
Tumblr media
         The standard roof comprises of:
Roof joists - In this case, you can see them running front to back and extending over the front wall to create a canopy.
Roof Boards- Attached to the roof joists are the roof boards. These are c.19mm tongue and groove boards.
Rafters- These provide additional strength and create a void into which you can place your insulation material.
Breathable Membrane- Covering the insulation material.
Batten Riser- A 50x50 timber to create a space between the breathable membrane and the roofing material.
Finish- Options here, as per the drawing, you can install battens running perpendicular to the rafters spaced according to the tile requirement OR, use a sheet material to cover the roof onto which felt shingles can be applied.
Garden Office:
Our garden office range of log cabins is perfect for working from home, without losing a room in your house. The additional garden room means that you can keep home life and work life separate, but still be at home in your office, in comfort and no long commute or travel costs. The garden offices are available in a variety of styles and sizes depending on your needs. The multi room buildings offer even more alternatives.
Tumblr media
The buildings are compatible with insulation upgrades so they are most suitable for year-round use. Installation is also available.
Below is a sample of our buildings suitable for use as a garden office. We have included buildings with wall logs of 44mm and 68mm and where we have existing customers using them for said purpose. Archipod Office Dome
The Archipod: It's not bigger on the inside, but it should be plenty big enough to get your creative and productive juices flowing as a backyard work dome. Plus, it looks pretty damn cool. If you're craving your own sphere of space cordoned off from co-workers and a Z of kids, or just want to own the biggest and best lawn ornament in the neighborhood, the Archipod is a freestanding, custom built, fully loaded garden office that will help you get your focus on from home. Top that, life-size Bigfoot statue!
The standard Archipod measures 9'6" in diameter internally at its widest point, and extends 8'3" to the top of the dome. A larger version, aptly named The Bigger Pod, has a 12'6" diameter and stands 8'5" tall.
All Archipods are built to buyer specifications, so think hard: what kind of big domed room in the backyard is going to get you pumped to go to work? To work hard? To make enough money to pay for the big domed room in the backyard?
A typical Archipod office is built as a curved plywood structural box with encapsulated fiberglass insulation and a plasterboard interior finish over foil insulation and a vapor barrier. All plastering and interior decorating are done post-installation, so your zen sphere won't show any jointing strips. Exterior siding shown in most of the gallery photos is western red cedar shingles, and the porthole skylight is a 3'4"-diameter dome designed to maximize natural light and ventilation.
Inside the Archipod you'll get an ergonomic semicircular desk, with drawers, shelves, and seating available by request. The work space is set up for full workstation integration, including power outlets, data outlets, and a complete lighting system of both dimmable spotlights and concealed background mood lighting.
If you don't have the space for an Archipod at home, but you really dig the idea of working in a sphere, check out the Emperor 1510 workstation.

Balcones House curbs Texas heat with expansive overhanging roof
The flat roof of this house in Austin by local firm Mell Lawrence Architects reaches well beyond its walls, shading the glazed top floor from the harsh Texan sun.
The 4,285-square-foot (398-square-metre) residence's large, overhanging roof extends eight feet (2.4 metres) around the perimeter to help mitigate heat inside.
Balcones House was built using cast-in-situ concrete, also chosen for its ability to withstand the hot climate. Exterior walls comprise a thinner outer layer and a heavier, structural inner layer, with insulation in between.
"The smaller exterior wall acts as a thermal flywheel, absorbing and reflecting the heat of the day, allowing interior temperatures to remain steady even in extreme summer heat," said Mell Lawrence Architects.
From the street, the house resembles a glass pavilion on top of a sturdy concrete base. Hidden from view in the back garden are a pebbled pool area and a detached guest house.
The ground-floor layout is designed as a box-within-a-box, with a central core covered in untreated fir wood housing storage spaces and the vertical circulation.
Upon entering through the front door into an open-plan dining and living area, the timber volume can be seen straight ahead.
"This volume organises the open space, obscuring the media room to the east, where openings to the outside are minimal, creating a more intimate space for watching television and reading, as well as a buffer from the busy street below," said the firm.
With storage and more private spaces located inside the core, main living areas are designed to be more open. Massive sliding glass doors surround the kitchen and living room, opening to the garden and swimming pool.
Upstairs, on the fully-glazed level of the house, is a bedroom and a master suite with a 15-foot-long (4.5-metre) screened porch. Flooring alternates between soft wood and polished concrete, with ceilings featuring structural fir decking and steel beams.
A small, detached guest house provides additional living space, and accommodates an office and art studio. The concrete unit has a spatial strategy similar to the main house, with a large grey pod centred in the space that houses a fold-out desk, drawers and a pull-out queen bed, while also serving as wall-space for a bathroom behind.
