new blog post: Release Day: Lion on Loan
new blog post on https://mizkit.com/release-day-lion-on-loan/
Release Day: Lion on Loan
Positively delighted to bring you LION ON LOAN, the first of a new paranormal romance series set at a wildlife park in Ireland! :D
This is a series inspired by Fota Wildlife Park in Cork, Ireland, a location I really love and strongly recommend anyone visiting Cork go out to see. I was chatting with friends and thought, wouldn’t it be fun if a wildlife park also doubled as a shifter vacation spot/refuge? Next thing I knew, I had a bunch of titles and a plan, so what was I to do but write it? I had a wonderful time writing this story, and hope you enjoy reading it at least as much as I liked writing it. :)
He’s just lion around on the job… Lion shifter Elliott Harkness is in Ireland for the dream vacation of a lifetime—and helping the Shamrock Safari Wildlife Park do some fundraising by staying there for a few days! After all, it’s not often that a shifter gets to display his animal form in public, and being the ‘lion on loan’ means Elliott can show off while doing some good for the always-underfunded park.
She’s pawsitive something’s wrong… Aoife Gallagher loves her education and outreach job at the Safari Park, but there’s something weird going on there. Bringing new animals into a zoo isn’t a fly-by-night operation, but as long as she’s worked here, there’s been a magnificent menagerie of exotic animals who seem to drop by for a week and then disappear again. And the new lion is in a completely unsafe enclosure! And is also…the hottest guy she’s ever seen?
Together they’ll make a purrfect team… The instant connection Aoife and Elliott feel would be wonderful under any other circumstances—but today Aoife has to convince a rude investor that the wildlife park’s mission to protect endangered species is worth their money, while also dealing with an ill-mannered child and the revelation that the park she’s loved for so long is a refuge for shifters as well as an ordinary wildlife park. It’s all too much—except Elliott is there to be Aoife’s ‘mane man,’ and his steady support (not to mention his incredible biceps) help Aoife get through a day that goes wrong from the start—and right at the end, in all the very best ways.
Lion on Loan is a funny, charming, and sweet entry in a new series from the author of the Virtue Shifters, a series described as “like reading a warm hug” by readers. Buy now and fall in love with a touch of the Irish in this brand-new romantic comedy paranormal romance! (Affiliate links throughout!)

Debt and Indebted Pt. 1
Captivity, Kidnapping for the sake of Collateral, general tomfoolery
“So.. what college do you go to?”
“You’re telling me you, Villain, kidnap me, a civilian minding my own business, and now you want to know what college I go to? What, so you can kidnap me as collateral again for your precious Hero? Are you insane?”
“I think you already know the answer to that, darling,” Villain grinned. “But maybe we can strike a deal. I happen to know that you are thousands in debt, and you are by far the calmest civilian to have been bound in these quarters, for better or for worse…”
Civilian frowned. Of course they weren’t the first. This was Villain of course, always causing some sort of pointless trouble in the city. Why were they even surprised! Villain continued his (very passionate) monologue as Civilian’s legs began to cramp.
“…Listen. I pay your tuition, you let me use you as collateral. It’s the loan sharks or me dear, who do you think cares about you more?”
“And how do I know you won’t kill me?” Civilian glared, shifting in their restraints. “Your name is everywhere. I’ve seen the terrible shit you pull here. And what about Hero? Won’t they recognize after the numerous attempts to save me?”
Villain laughed, a brittle thing, almost tangible in such a small space.
“Hero’s as dumb as a brick and blind to anything that doesn’t concern them. Why do you think I’m still in the papers? I’m not saying Hero isn’t good at their job but… Ha! No, that’s exactly what I’m saying! Why would I of all people kill you? You are what, 20 years old? I’m not cruel, you have a lot of life left to live darling, but a life in debt is not a life you want to be living. The slums are no place for a pretty thing like you. So what do you say? Please forgive my irony, but I believe I am the clear lesser of two evils. A little rebellion and years of systemic greed are not equivalent, if I may be as bold to claim such things.”
This was… tempting. Civilians cheeks turned rosy and hot even considering the offer, but a life of free education? Of more than picking up change in hopes of making their instant noodle stash last one more day? God, their mouth was watering just thinking of such luxuries.
“Real shot in the dark here, but I’m going to guess I don’t have much time to make this decision,”
Civilian glanced at the villains watch. Hero would be here any minute now.
“Fine. I’ll do it. I go to City State University… although I guess you probably already knew that being all powerful and whatever. But one condition, please just check with me the night before. I missed a calculus test for this, and being kidnapped by a notorious villain sounds about as good an excuse as my dog eating my homework.”
Villain smiled.
“Wonderful Dear, you won’t regret it.”

The quickest way to second-guess a decision to major in English is this: have an extended family full of Salvadoran immigrants and pragmatic midwesterners. The ability to recite Chaucer in the original Middle English was unlikely to land me a job that would pay off my student loans and help me save for retirement, they suggested when I was a college freshman still figuring out my future. I stuck with English, but when my B.A. eventually spat me out into the thick of the Great Recession, I worried that they’d been right.
After all, computer-science degrees, and certainly not English, have long been sold to college students as among the safest paths toward 21st-century job security. Coding jobs are plentiful across industries, and the pay is good—even after the tech layoffs of the past year. The average starting salary for someone with a computer-science degree is significantly higher than that of a mid-career English graduate, according to the Federal Reserve; at Google, an entry-level software engineer reportedly makes $184,000, and that doesn’t include the free meals, massages, and other perks. Perhaps nothing has defined higher education over the past two decades more than the rise of computer science and STEM. Since 2016, enrollment in undergraduate computer-science programs has increased nearly 49 percent. Meanwhile, humanities enrollments across the United States have withered at a clip—in some cases, shrinking entire departments to nonexistence.
But that was before the age of generative AI. ChatGPT and other chatbots can do more than compose full essays in an instant; they can also write lines of code in any number of programming languages. You can’t just type make me a video game into ChatGPT and get something that’s playable on the other end, but many programmers have now developed rudimentary smartphone apps coded by AI. In the ultimate irony, software engineers helped create AI, and now they are the American workers who think it will have the biggest impact on their livelihoods, according to a new survey from Pew Research Center. So much for learning to code.
ChatGPT cannot yet write a better essay than a human author can, nor can it code better than a garden-variety developer, but something has changed even in the 10 months since its introduction. Coders are now using AI as a sort of souped-up Clippy to accelerate the more routine parts of their job, such as debugging lines of code. In one study, software developers with access to GitHub’s Copilot chatbot were able to finish a coding task 56 percent faster than those who did it solo. In 10 years, or maybe five, coding bots may be able to do so much more.
People will still get jobs, though they may not be as lucrative, says Matt Welsh, a former Harvard computer-science professor and entrepreneur. He hypothesizes that automation will lower the barrier to entry into the field: More people might get more jobs in software, guiding the machines toward ever-faster production. This development could make highly skilled developers even more essential in the tech ecosystem. But Welsh also says that an expanded talent pool “may change the economics of the situation,” possibly leading to lower pay and diminished job security.
If mid-career developers have to fret about what automation might soon do to their job, students are in the especially tough spot of anticipating the long-term implications before they even start their career. “The question of what it will look like for a student to go through an undergraduate program in computer science, graduate with that degree, and go on into the industry … That is something I do worry about,” Timothy Richards, a computer-science professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, told me. Not only do teachers like Richards have to wrestle with just how worthwhile learning to code is anymore, but even teaching students to code has become a tougher task. ChatGPT and other chatbots can handle some of the basic tasks in any introductory class, such as finding problems with blocks of code. Some students might habitually use ChatGPT to cheat on their assignments, eventually collecting their diploma without having learned how to do the work themselves.
Richards has already started to tweak his approach. He now tells his introductory-programming students to use AI the way a math student would use a calculator, asking that they disclose the exact prompts they fed into the machine, and explain their reasoning. Instead of taking assignments home, Richards’s students now do the bulk of their work in the classroom, under his supervision. “I don’t think we can really teach students in the way that we’ve been teaching them for a long time, at least not in computer science,” he said.
Fiddling with the computer-science curriculum still might not be enough to maintain coding’s spot at the top of the higher-education hierarchy. “Prompt engineering,” which entails feeding phrases to large language models to make their responses more human-sounding, has already surfaced as a lucrative job option—and one perhaps better suited to English majors than computer-science grads. “Machines can’t be creative; at best, they’re very elaborate derivatives,” says Ben Royce, an AI lecturer at Columbia University. Chatbots don’t know what to do with a novel coding problem. They sputter and choke. They make stuff up. As AI becomes more sophisticated and better able to code, programmers may be tasked with leaning into the parts of their job that draw on conceptual ingenuity as opposed to sheer technical know-how. Those who are able to think more entrepreneurially—the tinkerers and the question-askers—will be the ones who tend to be almost immune to automation in the workforce.
The potential decline of “learn to code” doesn’t mean that the technologists are doomed to become the authors of their own obsolescence, nor that the English majors were right all along (I wish). Rather, the turmoil presented by AI could signal that exactly what students decide to major in is less important than an ability to think conceptually about the various problems that technology could help us solve. The next great Silicon Valley juggernaut might be seeded by a humanities grad with no coding expertise or a computer-science grad with lots of it. After all, the discipline has always been about more than just learning the ropes of Python and C++. Identifying patterns and piecing them together is its essence.
In that way, the answer to the question of what happens next in higher education may lie in what the machines can’t do. Royce pointed me toward Moravec’s paradox, the observation that AI shines at high-level reasoning and the kinds of skills that are generally considered to reflect cognitive aptitude (think: playing chess), but fumbles with the basic ones. The curiosity-driven instincts that have always been at the root of how humans create things are not just sticking around in an AI world; they are now more important than ever. Thankfully, students have plenty of ways to get there.

Quality is the best business plan.
[andrew koji] THE ENTREPRENEUR. Please welcome EIJI "E" YAMADA (he/him) to Huntsville, WV. They are an 38-year-old VISITOR who lives in TOWN. You may see them around working as a CURRENTLY UNEMPLOYED. Poor unfortunate soul. We’ll see if they survive.
~ While his family may have been wealthy, Eiji never saw a penny of that wealth until he had been considered to have earned it. Lessons in the value of money his father had called it. Success = financial reward.
~ Money and its link to success became a staple part of Eiji's life, moulded the way he viewed life knowing that any and everything could be bought to some capacity: material object, people and their loyalty, the world if you had enough.
~ Eiji’s father offered him a small loan upon the completion of his education, a congratulatory payment to help him take his first step into the world. Meticulous was the word that could best describe how Eiji handled his businesses and the use of his fathers money, every tiny detailed planned and accounted for. It was a small venue, a bar adorned in a 1920’s art nouveau aesthetic intertwined with his Japanese culture offering something unique, elevated by his taste for the expensive and the luxurious. It became an instant hit spot for the elite, those with wealth and influence, free from the lower classes. Even his father began to frequent it, an unexpected bonus. Within a couple of months, Eiji had enough to pay his father back.
~ The next logical step was expansion, buying the buildings on either side and converting them into new room, extra bars and VIP rooms. When expansion was no longer an option, franchising became the next step, many of the same style clubs appearing across different cities in different states. Yet with all the success in the world, Eiji found himself growing bored. Too much of the same thing was dull and he needed a new and exciting project to work on.
~ Janine came along at the right time, and the whirlwind romance began, making a move to Hollywood so that she could pursue her acting career and Eiji could scope out his next venture. A man of his reputation and with the funds behind him, it didn’t take long for him to settle in, setting up his next club, somewhere the Hollywood elites and the up-and-coming stars would find difficult to avoid. A marriage to Janine followed swiftly and unexpectedly, but they were madly in love so why not right?
~ Again things developed beyond just a club, becoming something of an entertainment hub, with Eiji, now going by E, acting as a talent scout/manager for his employees, delegating them to events and other venues he owned where he saw fit. The network was his, a spider web of sorts with him in the centre.
~ Sydney was different. Something about the young man ignited such excitement in Eiji that he couldn’t help how transfixed he became whenever they performed. He became the quickest hire and the easiest management decision he had ever made. Sydney was set to be a star, and Eiji was adamant to help them get there.
~ He couldn't tell you when it was exactly they hooked up, all he remembered was Janine had been away filming for a movie, and Sydney had been there. A mistake, they both agreed, and yet it happened again. And again. Every time Janine was away it happened again. Professionalism was no longer on the table for these two. An ultimatum was given by Sydney eventually, the two arguing viciously about it, but Eiji couldn't help himself, and even while the divorce was being finalised, the two were drawn to each other. When the divorce finally came through, Eiji and Sydney became official. Janine wasn’t heard from again.
~ It didn't take long for the two to become one of LA's most prominent power couples, with the highest of highs, the envy of all around them, until they argued, when things became explosive, more often than not as public as their good moments. On and off every few weeks, an endless cycle.
~ It was during a break that Eiji’s parents passed, in quick succession to one another, and after the mourning period was over, and the inheritance money had cleared, Eiji dived back into work with his next project: Sydney’s, LA’s newest most prolific bar and entertainment venue, named of course after his former lover, decorated exactly how he envisioned Sydney’s dream bar would look like. It worked, Syd came back to him, and the place was a roaring success with Eiji pulling the strings in the background while Syd promoted the hell out of the place as if it was his own.
~ Eiji proposed to Sydney soon after, a final commitment to the man, to prove that all the bad from the past didn’t matter anymore. And yet, no matter the promises and the gifts and the excitement as the wedding was planned, arguments persisted, more frequent and more explosive than ever. Eiji's home was trashed, belongings either going missing or destroyed and the media loved the drama that followed. The whirlwind relationship that had lasted for years at this point, finally seemed to be over. Officially. ~ Rumours began to swirl when Syd went off grid that the final outburst had been the last straw, that Eiji had snapped, killing his fiancé. No one had heard from Sydney for a while now, someone so often in the public eye going radio silent was suspicious. No one had heard from Janine in a while either since the divorce. So that eventually brought Eiji to Huntsville, in search of his ex to prove to the public he wasn’t dead. But with both now missing, what rumours could swirl in the LA circles in their absence?

THE RISE AND FALL OF BYJU’S
The Indian Ed-Tech firm Byju’s was founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran to combat the traditional teaching methods and to make learning fun and memorable. The company achieved instant stardom by becoming one of the most popular education apps in the country. Through a number of acquisitions and fund raising, the company has grown to become the world’s largest edtech companies with over 150 million registered students in 20+ countries. The meteoric rise of the company was followed up with an equally alarming decline. The current situation at Byju's is a public relations nightmare. The company has been accused of a number of unethical practices, including misleading advertising, predatory lending, and aggressive sales. The company is plagued by allegations of corporate mismanagement, greed, and aggressive sales tactics. The company has also been criticized for its poor performance, which has led to layoffs of thousands of employees in recent months.
The company is notoriously known for lack of transparency. They have been reluctant to disclose their financial information despite frequent requests and warnings from their investors and auditing firm. This lack of transparency has made it difficult for investors and analysts to assess Byju's true financial health. The company has also skipped paying $40 million loan payment to lenders. Byju's has also been criticized for its aggressive sales tactics. The company has been accused of pressurizing parents to enroll their children in its programs, even if they cannot afford them. The company was also accused of using predatory lending practices to target parents from poor socioeconomic backgrounds. In early January of this year, the company roped in Lionel Messi as their Global Ambassador and ironically laid off thousands of employees a few days later to cut costs. They sponsored the 2023 FIFA Men’s World Cup and have laid off around 2500+ employees.
The Ed Tech firm is now seen as a company that is more interested in profits than in its employees or customers.
Task at Hand:
You are the PROs of Byju Raveendran, convince the investors and lenders as to how the company is going to repay the debts and improve the image of the company

What's your ideal solution for increasing birth rates?
yeah there are a variety of ways to attack it
offer increased tax breaks for children. alternatively, punish childlessness with additional taxes. "childfree" types always be talking about all the money they save so they can travel and do fun things. well, i want to see them cry when a portion of that money is taxed to subsidize /families/ travelling and doing fun things. a new type of family planning -- an organization where parents (or prospective parents) can go to find a variety of resources to help them in their creation of a family. also i think artificial incubator technology would be a major help so that's something that should be invested in.
build more houses and walkable, safer, close-knit communities; we need people out and about, moving around, being active, mingling with other humans, making connections, stay healthy, etc. reduce the workweek so parents can spend more time with their families. and encourage more flexible work-from-home options. universal basic income (with extra for each dependent). more affordable childcare. generous maternity leave. give parents bonus bay. also, not sure how it would be done, but i feel like there should be some more accessible housekeeping options; either some public housekeeping corps, or a community volunteer initiative, or the government offering some voucher for housekeeping, etc. just something to help parents with household maintenance.
we also need to get people fucking and getting married. young people are living with parents later into life than previous generations. so they need places to fuck. we should build love hotels. we need to incentivize marriage. tax breaks for married couples, government loans for weddings, some kind of family recreation department that organizes and subsidizes couples' honeymoons, offer interest-free loans for first time home buyers. offer a family loan/voucher for newlyweds worth some portion of their annual income and have a quarter of the loan forgiven for each child they have.
but underneath all of this, the core of the issue is cultural and social and spiritual. we need to completely shift away from this current hedonistic, atomistic liberal paradigm toward one that is more wholesome and family/community oriented. one where instant personal gratification isn't the goal. where we acknowledge that parenting can be hard sometimes but it's rewarding on a deeper level and we shouldn't avoid things just because they're difficult. we need to starting thinking about something bigger than just ourselves. we need to make antinatalists and childfree types look miserable and lame (this isn't hard to do). it needs to be seen as uncool (and degenerate) to be an adult child who lives only for themselves. and being a parent needs to be seen as something noble and good and fulfilling.
this would be incorporated in the education system, explicitly. as part of the sex ed and family life classes, for example. we should be giving mothers who have multiple children medals and parades and financial awards. we need to make a holiday in the summer that celebrates the family. make it a three day weekend thing. you know how the pentagon funds war movies? we need to do the same with families. have the government fund movies that are centered around strong families and having children and getting married and that sort of stuff. have government agents spread breeding kink propaganda online (i'm only /half/-joking).
overall we just need to shift to a more optimistic perspective. i think people have more kids when they are optimistic about the future. but i find a lot of antinatalist types are deeply pessimistic about the future and just humanity in general. "why would i ever want to bring more life into this horrible shitty world??" is a common sentiment i see. so i think there needs to be a massive optimistic propaganda campaign. and we just need to get people healthier in mind, body, and spirit. we need to make therapy/counselling more accessible, we need state-mandated gym time (half-joke), and spiritual renewal.
which reminds me: the ultimate solution is to join my cult.

okay but for real depending on the size budget and scope of your library things might be different but here are things in general i as a librarian have seen libraries offer
hotspots and chromebooks for people to use and even keep to help those who need services at home
my past library also did something called "enhanced library cards" which acted as a photo id for people who could not easily obtain one. does still require documents (check with your local library) and primarily benefited our immigrant community who struggled to get a state ID or do things like open up a bank account, but i will also give the aside that we were specifically told we were not allowed to ask for proof of gender, and it had multiple options available, and if you are a trans person looking for an ID that more closely matches your identity, it would be worth looking into.
online databases for research (ebscohost my beloved) and continued education (learning express library is a great one if you're getting any accreditation for future career)
language classes and programs, both ESL for those interested in improving their English, and online features like Mango which have such a wide option for languages, and I've even seen ones with indigenous languages
books, obviously, but usually a lot of ways to get books. for a long time i ran a blog where i read fear street books by rl stine and most of these are out of print 90s paperbacks that i could very easily request using our InterLibrary Loan system. if you are a library user who is not taking advantage of ILLs, find whatever obscure out of print book you want, or ancient edition, or just a book your library doesn't have, and ask to request it.
most libraries should have an online sign up to get a library card which will only verify if your address is in the system (and a pass work around i've used for people is to just enter the library's address). these often do not come with full service privileges but even if you aren't interested in going to an actual building, signing up for this will give you instant access to ebooks and online materials and you'll never have to talk to a person.
most libraries are putting on programs because they want to attract a younger adult crowd. people who use libraries tend to be either families and babies, or elders of the community. look up the closest branch and just see if they have an adult anime night, or book clubs, or art clubs. a lot of these also run as social groups, if you're in the market to meet new people.
early literacy programs and ways to help parents not just with story times, but individual reading hours, parenting classes, nutrition classes with actual experts, and more.
if your library has any online material like hoopla or kanopy you are motherfucking set. i kept hearing my coworkers refer to kanopy as a movie site with "movies that showed at cannes, things like that" NOT REALIZING they also have blockbusters, they have oldies, they have TV shows, documentaries, and not just big name ones but cool indie ones. i watched everything everywhere all at once on kanopy. the image on their login screen is moonlight. they have invasion of the body snatchers, barbarella, battle royale, the live action popeye movie!! they definitely center around "culturally relevant movies" but you would be surprised what that entails. (these apps are expensive for libraries to purchase action too, to the point that my last library got rid of hoopla even tho it rules, so if you like them, use them, let them know someone out there gains value from it)
oh yeah also some libraries check out video games!!!! this isn't going to be an everywhere thing but if you're curious just flip through their collection. if nothing else they can get you those massive legend of zelda art books to peruse at your pleasure.
there's like a million more ask a reference librarian a niche research question and you will make their day, download one of their apps just to play with it, give them use in some way. libraries are very reliant on statistics and if something isn't getting used it goes away. love your library, and even if you don't do anything more than check out a book, you are showing support by using their services. it does matter.
Destroy the myth that libraries are no longer relevant. If you use your library, please reblog.
