Shinkane Week 2024:
DAY ONE: Urban or Rural
January 2121 Akane Tsunemori was released from Tokorozawa Correction and Care Center. Kogami and Tsunemori took a picture of them in front of the cherry blossoms. This photo is printed and framed on his desk in MoFA headquarters on Dejima.
(the photo for the cherry blossoms in the back is free stock photo from pexel, this was not even the version of the picture I was going to draw, but this one is done, and the other one is not, crying cat emoji)

I watched some parts of First Inspector after Providence and a lot of stuff made sense. One was Sibyl's dialogue with Shindo and Asusawa about the criminally asymptomatic.
Tumblr media
Sibyl is comprised of asymptomatic, who can either be saints or psychos. This was what Arata's dad Atsushi was hoping in Providence. Instead of becoming a part of Sibyl, Arata would choose to live on and work for the Ministry. Providence explains that Atsushi and Homura's father had placed bets and that Atsushi was an old player of Round Robin who essentially didn't just bet on Arata, but perhaps also Kei, Maiko, and Akira as well? It would make sense why Akira was displeased when he met Atsushi. Also clears up why Atsushi had to die, since Akira, the person he bet on died, Atsushi could not rejoin Round Robin to enlist Arata and it was Homura Shizuka who bet on Arata instead, won and dissolved Bifrost through the Sibyl System. It also makes sense why Kogami said this to Kei before beating him up (more under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's because Akane said it to him. That they were a team and that he shouldn't try to do things alone. It also makes sense why Kogami worried that Akane should have not borne the 'crime' of killing Chief Kasei. (who makes an appearance in FI) in the FES Live Reading Drama. The strangest thing though, is Akane's clothes in FI.
Tumblr media
Remind you of something?
Tumblr media
Yeah. For some reason, this detail made me uneasy. Also in Providence I noted that Kasei did not flinch at all when Akane aimed the gun to kill her. She did not seem surprised, as though Chief had foreknowledge that Akane would do this.
In the Genesis (3-4) novels, the first Kasei Joshuu was made from two brains. Two criminally asymptomatic individuals, an Inspector who wanted to protect people and believed that humans would find a way to escape the bloodthirsty nature of Sibyl, and the second brain was of an ex-member of a terrorist group, who was the only successful case of being an artificially introduced criminal asymptomatic (not born asymptomatic but created through intensive experiments), who died respecting the Inspector's beliefs that some people found peace and happiness under the Sibyl System and did not destroy it. The two individual brains were fused into a single unit but they lost their sense of identity to form the Chief of the PSB.
This is the main reason Akane is favoured by Kasei Joshuu, because she reflects the combined ideals of these brains. Akane is allowed to return to the PSB as a statutory Enforcer and I think she will be assisting Homura, the new chief. S4 may have them working together, while Kogami continues working for the SAD in Dejima. Shizuka Homura is mysterious as heck, he's also kind of creepy, and his goals are unclear, so forgive me if I cannot trust him, yet. He risked his life to play Round Robin and its thanks to him that Akane is back, but is relationship with Sibyl makes me uneasy.
Tumblr media
Homura's words eerily echo Akane's employment, as a statutory Enforcer. So she's 'free' but not really. But who the heck is completely free under Sibyl? I suppose, Akane's position is better because she's favoured by Sibyl and the System needs her to provide more upgrades. Akane is still persistent that the Law should exist, because she believes that its the Law that shall also protect Sibyl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does this mean S4 shall be the finale? Or do we have much more to go? Again, I only watched a few clips of FI, so my theory might be completely wrong, I shall have to rewatch S3 and FI entirely to make sense of how it connects to Providence. Your additions are welcome ❤️ and thank you for reading.

Psycho-Pass Providence Review (with major spoilers!!! Don’t read if you don’t want spoilers!!)
As promised, I went to see Psycho-Pass Providence at Nijo Toho Cinemas in Kyoto. They had a little merch at the theater. They also gave everyone a booklet with artwork that I’ll include at the end of this review. If you want to wait until you can see the movie, please stop reading now because I will be basically telling everything that happened, good and bad. I was glad to see more people coming to watch the movie because when I bought the tickets most seats were available! We are a small fandom, but we are loyal! Now, please understand I don’t know any Japanese, so a lot of the information here is things that happened, but I can’t tell you much about the dialogue. I’m dying for someone to translate it once the movie becomes available everywhere.
Spoilers below:
The movie starts in a ship off the coast of Kanagawa, Japan, that is being attacked by the infamous peace breakers led by Akira Ignatov, Kei’s strange brother. The men in the ship are SAD agents that are getting murdered left and right. What do the peacebreakers want? Get something from a woman named Stronoyka who is currently traveling in the ship. From the synopsis we know this woman holds a dossier that details how to destroy Sibyl (or something of the sort, can’t quite remember). Kogami is the first on the scene in a suit reminiscent of a flying squirrel, but unfortunately, he’s too late. He looks hot as hell though when he jumps in the water.
The intro with a song by Ling Tosite Sigure had me excited to be watching a Psycho-Pass movie in a movie theater and surrounded by Japanese fans of the movie. It was sweet!
To skip ahead, SAD and the MWPSB have to work together. Akane, Kogami, Ginoza, Sugo, Saiga and Frederica travel to Dejima to investigate, I think. Let’s get to the meat of what the fandom wants to know.
Kogami and Ginoza Reunited
Akane is talking to Frederica and as they’re walking towards Division 1 office, they find Ginoza grabbing Kogami by the collar and yelling at him while Sugo is trying to separate them. What was Ginoza saying? No idea, but he was probably getting back at Kogami for leaving or coming back, etc.
At some point, however, Kogami and Ginoza fight together against their enemies. There seems to be some will for reconciliation.
Akane and Kogami Reunited
Akane walks in the room with Frederica when Gino is yelling at Kogami. Ko says “Kanishkan” at some point, so I think he’s addressing Akane, but her reaction is…should I say, enigmatic? Indifferent? Maybe she’s controlling herself?
SAD and the aforementioned team travel together to Dejima, and Akane and Kogami barely talk on the way. Once there, Saiga and Kogami talk and at some point they mention Akane. Later Akane calls Kogami while he’s in his room. They both sound like they disagree about something or like something is awkward between them and Akane hangs up on him, surprising him.
The thing about this movie is that they gave Akane the cutest outfits. Especially one in a very crucial moment. I’m so glad they made her look so cute and beautiful in the movie.
At some point the infamous peacebreakers begin their attack, and in the famous explosion scene, Frederica, Saiga, Kogami and Akane are walking down a hallway when an explosion goes off. Kogami doesn’t even think once about protecting Saiga or Frederica, he straight up runs to Akane and they fall to the ground. There are some lines of dialogue here while he’s laying on top of her. This is the part when Akane gets her bruised cheek.
In another scene, after Akira basically gives himself up, Kogami is interrogating him and then another guy shows up and shoots at them. Kogami gets shot and he ends up in the hospital. Akane visits him and when he makes to start smoking, she takes the cigarette off his mouth. There’s a moment here where it seems like he’s teasing her, because he sits up on his bed and kinda leans towards her. Very cute moment between them.
Saiga
Saiga and Kogami have a long talk about many things (I assume, remember, I don’t know any Japanese) but at some point they mention Akane.
A very sad, traumatic moment for Akane. They get attacked by a specially unkillable peacebreaker and Saiga ends up being held hostage by the guy. In the last moment, what we feared happens. Saiga’s last words are for Akane. Our poor girl suffers a lot and Kogami is there to console her and help her push through. They look so good together!
Akira, Kei, Maiko, Arata and Arata’s Dad
Honestly, most of the plot escapes me. Akira at some point even fights himself. He seems to be controlled by an old man who appears to be creating his own version of Sibyl. Akane is actually invited to Kei and Maiko’s wedding and on the same night Arata’s dad, with whom she seemed to have a very good relationship (there’s a lot of dialogue between Arata’s dad and Akane), killls himself while holding a photo of his family.
Craziness Ensues
Akane agrees to meet the mastermind behind all these terror attacks while a tactical team formed by Frederica, Gino, Kogami and Sugo fighting lasers from the air attack the headquarters of the peacebreakers. Here we see for the first time the two old dudes that become obsessed with Kogami in Season 3.
While everyone is fighting and there are explosions and shooting everywhere, Akane has a dialogue with the mastermind. At some point she draws her dominator but his crime coefficient is around 40. The whole place begins to collapse and by then, the mastermind has shot Akane on the leg and has her cuffed. They discuss and debate when he shoots her again (that asshole!). By the time Kogami shows up to rescue her, the other man is pointing his gut right at Akane’s forehead while they debate. At some point Akane says something that irks the guy and he pistol whips her a little bit. Kogami shoots him and gets her out of there.
The craziest plot twist
They show Akane dressed in a ceremonial uniform (and she looks so beautiful!) while Kogami is confined to an isolation facility. He begins reading a letter she wrote to him. They show her at a ceremony where it seems she will be recognized for her achievements. It is here when Akane shoots Chief Kasei in front of everyone.
They show Mika running to arrest Akane for her crime and she yells at Akane with frustration for what she did. Akane offers no resistance. As Kogami is reading the letter he looks angry, frustrated and sad for what Akane did. Why did she do it? We will have to wait until someone translates the movie.
Akane’s face is plastered all over the news as the inspector who went crazy and killed her boss. They show a parallel of Kogami walking out of the isolation facility while Akane is walking in. They don’t cross paths, but once Akane is alone she completely breaks down sobbing uncontrollably. It was so sad to see her suffer like that! Then they show Kogami walking free on the street and he says something and then the movie ends. Did Akane go to jail because of Kogami?
I’ll write more thoughts tomorrow! Overall it was well made. Lots of CGI and explosions almost made me think at times that I was watching a Transformers movie.

Ok I’m just gonna say it. My feelings about Kougami up to this point:
(Disclaimer: I have not seen PPP yet so my impressions are based on the spoilers and discussions that all the watchers have had, -and they are subject to change) - also trying to separate my shipper feelings from this but beware of my inherent bias anyway.
Season 1: Kougami is generally very warm and protective towards Akane. He doesn’t see her as a woman yet but they both validate each other to an unimaginable degree. I mean, she risked her life and psycho pass to help him track down Makishima who ppl believed was a ghost. She restored the credibility of his investigative abilities and made him actually think that there might be a better world without the structural divisions that they have. That didn’t stop him from breaking the law but it’s obvious that he especially thought very highly of her even after leaving the country.
Psycho Pass: The Movie: honestly, the movie is so enjoyable with regards to Kougami’s character development. He smiles at Akane so much in this movie, tries to get validation from her and again is really protective of her. They definitely pose Akane as more womanly and more as a equal with him - both in physical and mental abilities. She also impresses him several times in the film. He’s overall amused like “wow, she actually followed me all the way out here. What a woman”
SS Case 3: He sings praises of Akane ofcourse, even in the presence of an undeniable beauty like Frederica. If anything, we can contrast Frederica finding him to Akane finding him in the first movie, and his dialogue and body language alone show how he’s mildly annoyed by or at least resistant to Frederica’s presence. Most of his character arc here is in relation to Tenzing though which I suppose was supposed to teach him to be responsible for more than just himself(?), but that ends up being left open ended during his fight with Garcia (I mean he stabs the man to death before they can conclude the dialogue). Overall though, Kougami’s smiles are for Tenzing here and also when he’s saying that he’ll return to Japan.
Season 3 and First Inspector: He’s either all focused on the investigation at hand or with Akane. Everytime he smiles in this season- it’s for Akane! And not to mention, they don’t even really discuss work or philosophy in their interactions, but more about themselves and what they’ve missed from each other after being separated for years. This is what gave me hope that his emotional intelligence had improved and he would finally find some peace in Akane’s presence.
Providence: Based on what I’ve read, Kougami feels rather out-of-character in this. Like a weird blip in the timeline of his character arc. All the bonus scenes I saw anyway just made his interactions with Akane awkward. I didn’t expect it to be absolutely smooth but where’s the warmth that he initially had for this woman in S1 and the 1st movie??? What is this fuckboi behavior Kougami??? Maybe he’s able to make up for it in the 3rd act of Providence at least based on the notes I’ve read but he’s just so cold. Like he has a point to make?? I’m so confused. The tone of Providence is just cold in general and we keep seeing scenes where Ko and Akane are just on their own, never really together and communicating - the rain, the ice, the cold city drafts - just adds to it. But maybe the fact that S3 and PPFI comes after this gives us hope that he did get his act together and maybe visited her more and actually talked this out with her while she was in confinement. Maybe we’ll get some bonus scenes in a novel format.
I haven’t even seen PPP yet and I already need a season 4 to redeem Kougami’s character like what the hell. (And I’m sure the animation staff are exhausted and I don’t wanna encourage overworking them) - even if it’s like a measly 45 sec scene, I need to see the warm and caring Kougami again.
Providence looks phenomenal though - the team definitely outdid themselves - and I can’t wait to watch it.

A scene I would like to see in a possible PP4
So thanks to some fans on this site that have translated some parts of the psychopass movie novelization, we get to see a moment between Akane and Kougami chatting in shambala about Kougami's mother.
Akane refers her by Tomo-san and that she occasionally visits to check up on her. So now that after first inspector he picks her up. I would like to see in PP4 that they go visit tomo-san together for once.
But since they would be in the kougami household when they visit, Akane is gonna have to refer them as Tomo-san and Shinya-san when speaking to them to avoid confusion. It would probably be the first time she would call him by his first name.
I hope that they would continue to use first names more. I feel like it be a first step towards breaking down barriers between them even if it's not romantic. Cause after all these years and the stuff they do, I don't think they have to be so formal with each other.
I especially want Akane to stop. When she has conversations or acts around him she's not that polite or reserved but she still calls him his name as "Mr.Kougami". Even if it's not romantic their bond is still stronger and closer than acquaintances or co-workers in the same field. They know each other pretty well.

In the sea of pompous and elaborate getups, gowns ballooned by the riches tucked in their pockets, the footsteps of the elite weighed heavy across the wooden floor. Every step and clack audible, barely any peace reached Kougami's ears since he had entered the party venue.
As expected of Bureau Chief Homura, his idea of a party was not simply that of fine tunes and good food—it was all of those but grander. The newly instated chief had invited the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra to play music for his distinguished guests, the same orchestra that had been gracing the official functions of the imperial family for years. In that event, Shizuka was the boss, and the maestro followed Shizuka’s song requests on command—what a way to have a jukebox. The food, the mouth-watering spread, it was prepared by local chefs who recently bagged gold in a Sibyl-officiated food competition, and their skills were put to the test once again to satisfy the palates of high-profile government officials, public figures, and business leaders. The party's centerpiece wasn't surprising either: an intricate installation of 700,000 shards of glass resembling a giant chrysanthemum—Japan's national flower, symbolizing longevity, rejuvenation, and royalty.
A party fit for royalty, alright. That was how Kougami could put it. Perhaps the grandest display in all of those he had attended before, Kougami suddenly became conscious of his own appearance.
The sophisticated cries of the violins extended across the ballroom, and as if on cue, the ceiling lights dimmed to accommodate the calmer mood in the air. The guests scurried through the room to find their respective dancing partners, and before Kougami could finish his cigarette, everybody had already settled in, hands held and waists tugged.
Meanwhile, Kougami was alone in a corner. To be exact, he deserted his more sociable peers from the Suppressing Action Department for some solitude. His lone state did make him seem like a sore thumb, but Kougami, who spent most of the hour leaning against a wall, was willing to pass the time in that manner, even if people were beginning to shoot condescending glances his way.
Then, the giant doors to the ballroom opened, and the corner of Kougami's eye caught something vibrant red. Like an exotic flower. The striking, colorful gown briskly swept the floor, turning everyone else's attention toward the center. As for Kougami who stood at the far back, he was not bothered to have a better look at the newcomer, until the gown's owner curtsied in front of Public Safety Bureau Chief Homura Shizuka.
Kougami then had a hunch of who it was. He slowly made his way through the stagnant crowd and saw her. Given the guest's petite, lithe build and short brown hair, there was no mistake. The night’s flower of vermillion was no other than Tsunemori Akane.
In Kougami's memories of working with her, Tsunemori had always worn her formal black suit or MWPSB jacket whenever she was out in the field. Sometimes, Kougami’s eyes couldn't help checking her form; he did make a mental note to stop his awful habit. It was, however, a first for Kougami to find his former superior in such a pristine state, and it took everything in him to avoid looking like an idiot.
Tsunemori stood far from him, startled by the sudden barrage of notorious faces known to plaster their manufactured smiles and promises on any bare screen, wall, and pole they could find. She, despite her previous incarceration record, was still a highly sought flower, and the crappy weeds competed for her attention. Kougami’s loudest voice couldn't possibly meet the distance even if he tried.
The Cinderella story never existed for Kougami; hard to imagine it would ever happen in his lifetime. He closed his eyes, he refused to believe in it. When he was about to give up his thin thread of hope, the clacking of someone's heels grew louder with every step. The distance closed between Kougami and that person, and he could feel a presence right in front of him.
So she stood there proudly, the flower of vermillion whose dark amber eyes glowed brighter than the dim lights above, and her pale shoulders and ample cleavage bared for him to see. So tempting, Kougami could hardly resist staring at her.
But the pompous weeds glared at the man eyed by their precious flower. It was uncalled for: the spotlight was cast on Kougami who was never fond of attention. The weeds self-appointed themselves as judges; they deemed Kougami unworthy of standing next to Tsunemori. Kougami's predicament was clearly due to Tsunemori picking him, and she was definitely the first to ever make him feel uncomfortable in his own skin.
“Mr. Kougami?” the flower of vermillion met Kougami's gaze. Tsunemori's curtain of lashes fluttered, revealing the rugged man's reflection in her experienced eyes. What could she have witnessed in those years while Kougami was away?
Tsunemori lifted her hand and reached out to Kougami as a sign of invitation. She asked him, “May I have this opportunity to dance with you?”
The next thing Kougami knew, he was guiding Tsunemori's footsteps, her hand in his, as the two danced to the slowest song Kougami had ever heard in years. Following the dwindling sound of the piano keys, Kougami slowly whispered in Tsunemori's ear, “One, step step. Two, step step. Three, step step, and finally, turn right here,”
The moment was beyond Kougami's dreams, and he still couldn't believe it. As to why his self-doubt ran as deep as the pits of the earth, Kougami was once asked if his everyday was like an endless hell. Most of the time, sure; dread was the usual suspect that invaded his mind. Kougami never begged the nameless deity to grant him bubble-like dreams because he hated having any sort of hope for happiness. To him, the fleeting feeling was always so precious, so fragile.
Unfortunately, rare occasions such as that night reminded the ex-fugitive of a curse worse than his insomnia: seeing Tsunemori so beautiful, Kougami was bound to have difficulty sleeping later, wasting his hours thinking of an unreachable future with her.
Notes: The title and story concept were inspired by the song "Beyond My Dreams" by Sunwoo Jung-a, an OST of the Korean drama series Extraordinary Attorney Woo. If you are familiar with that revolving door scene, I referred to Lee Jun-ho's mini dance lesson for Kougami's line here. And as always, thank you for reading!

Shinkane Week 2024:
DAY THREE: Time or Space
Spy x Family AU
Kogami works for MoFA agents, Akane is a secret inspector under Sybil, and Tenzing is a teenager that can read minds.
(more notes under on this AU that is now living in my brain rent free)
(post pp3 vibe)
Kogami is the one who is told by Frederica to adopt a teenager to send to a school (?) something something Sybil's elites. He finds Tenzing, a very bright and perceptive kid who decides to follow Kogami around and ask him to teach her how to avenge her parents. Because he looks very tough, and because she can read minds, but she doesn't tell him that.
Akane does spying and investigating work in the dark for Sybil, even though she knows the truth of about Sybil, she sees it as a lesser of evils for now. Sybil "suggests" her to marry Homura. (ah yes, the funny colon three cat Homura is also here, and also hmm the ao3 fanfics you know I have been reading) To escape this arranged political marriage, Akane is set to find herself a husband to get out of being more of a pawn of Sybil.
Kogami runs into her and somehow Akane propose to him. (Kogami is too much of a wet cat to be able to ask her.)
Tenzing is often told she looks like Akane, that they have same eyes. Even through in this cover story Tenzing is supposed to be Kogami and his ex wife's child, everyone keep thinking Tenzing and Akane are blood related.
Akane cannot cook at all, Kogami is the one who cook for the house.
I need to draw Mika as Yuri coming to visit their apartment, god it would be so funny.
I wrote way too many words in @h4msanta's DM about how everyone fits into this AU. I might just have to keep drawing more art so I can explain it.
Notes on the drawing:
(This was such a blast to draw! I am so happy with this piece. This is a parody of Spy x Family Mission 1 cover.
Most of the hard work was to find things to populate the ground with. On Akane's side we have some exploded bodies, a dead Kasei and a funny brain in vat. Kogami's side is what I was really spend a lot of time thinking. I spent a lot of time looking at blurry images of profiling books and also screen shots of different parts of the show. I have now become friends with imfdb. We have his trusty revolver; dog tags and med bag from 2015 movie; huge backpack from sinner of the system 3; Milkor Mark 14 that goes "thonk" that Kogami has with him in the 2015 movie when he runs into Akane; the practice drone that Kogami beats up in s1, Hera Arms CQR that Kogami uses in the beginning of Sinner of the system 3. I even googled lengths of guns so I can fit everything in.)

Psycho-Pass Providence - My thoughts
Hello everyone, yesterday @jediofbooksandsnacks and I went to watch Psycho-Pass Providence. We went to watch the dubbed version which got cancelled, so we ended up watching the subbed version.
Here are my thoughts about the movie:
(SPOILERS)
The Plot I had already watched the movie in Japan without understanding a lick of dialogue. Some things were inferred from what was happening, but dear lord, with an anime like Psycho-Pass, you really need subtitles if you want to understand what's happening.
There's a lot of plot, but below is the basic gist. In fact, there are things I still don't understand. I may have to rewatch it to fully grasp some things. Basic plot is the MOFA was fucking around abroad and they found out. It's this ministry that created the Peacebreakers who got out of control and turned against the ministry and against Japan. One of these guys has a device called a "Divider" which when implanted in someone's brain causes them to be possessed and easily manipulated. It's called a divider because it splits the animalistic from the rational in the human mind. The villain (Tomami, I think was his name?) utilizes religious frenzy (lots of interesting quotations from the Bible) and the divider to control other peacebreakers. His aim is to declare his own rudimentary Sibyl system in the Kuril Islands at the North of Japan. To fully succeed, he needs the Stroyanka papers, which --from what I understood-- outlines the weaknesses of the Sibyl system and apparently can end wars or make them worse. I guess they are some type of predictive device, like a war AI that can analyze circumstances and tell you what to do in order to win or destroy an enemy.
The Stroyanka papers are somewhere in Dejima, which is where they hold all refugees who have not passed an immigration exam. This is where Maiko and Kei live in Providence. The only person who can open them, supposedly, is Saiga Joji. So off go the SAD and parts of Division 1 (Akane, Gino and Sugo) with Saiga to retrieve the papers.
The Call I really loved the dialogue between Kogami and Saiga when they're alone and begin talking about the case and quoting the Bible. Religion and Gods seem to be the theme of Providence, which is apt, since Providence is such a biblical word.
Kogami tells Saiga that him being a hermit reminds him of St. John and then reproaches him a little about working with the MWPSB. I love that Saiga tells him he is working with Tsunemori Akane. I simply adore how much Saiga dotes on Akane and how much she's definitely his favorite from all his students (take that, Kogami and Frederica).
Saiga warns Kogami about being nothing more than a killing machine. He tells him that it's up to him to be more than that and tells him that Akane is not a saint or a buddha and that he should apologize while he got the chance.
So Kogami makes the call and is unable to apologize. The next day Saiga takes a quick look at Akane and tells Kogami something along the lines of: "So you couldn't do it, huh?" to which Kogami replies "I don't know what you mean." Kogami comes off not only as a coward but as a stubborn mule who pretends not to know what Saiga is referring to. Maybe he doesn't like Saiga prying in their relationship. But I do think Saiga knows (I mean, he's Saiga) that their bond is important to the two of them.
Here's the vid of the call:
youtube
Kogami: "I've killed hundreds of men, walked seven countries by foot, raised a little girl for a month, starved in the wilderness, survived millions of explosions, but somehow telling this cute woman to forgive me for all the shit I have caused is the most difficult thing I have had to do."
The SAD Sucks The minister of foreign affairs and Frederica know that the papers are not in Dejima, but they go on this mission to use Saiga as bait to bring out all the Peacebreakers. Once they are there and Saiga opens the box only to find a cracked mirror, Frederica lets them know the truth and promises to protect Saiga's life. I love Kogami telling her: "So you would lie to the professor?" Frederica makes a face of contrition like "I'm soooorry guysss." But I like that Kogami calls her out. It makes me think their relationship is closer than that of boss and rabid killing dog.
Well, that doesn't go as planned. Apparently, the strategy of MOFA and Arata Shindo is to leak intelligence to follow the steps of the Peacebreakers and I guess predict their next move? Either way, it was a messy mission that ends up with Saiga dying, Akane broken down, and a lot of dead SAD men. Akane complains to Frederica and Kogami says that blaming Frederica won't fix anything (like man, let my girl rant because your team lied to her and got her father figure killed).
There's a scene with Kogami and Akane in an elevator where she's crying and angry. She blames herself for bringing Saiga out there to die. Kogami tells her that anger is fine, but that now is not the moment. That they need to complete the mission and then she can cry. She agrees, wipes her tears and follows him.
Akane's First Date This is a little bit of a joke, but Arata Shindo tells Akane to come with him to Kei and Maiko's wedding. I swear to god this is probably the closest thing Akane has had to a date. So yeah, Akane's first date is with Arata's dad and he ends up killing himself after giving a speech, so I guess... horrible first date? Lol.
On a serious note, he probably invites her because he knows he's going to kill himself. Chief Kasei gave him a gun, thanked him for his service, told him to put two and two together while waggling her eyebrows implying "time to take yourself out."
Kogami and Akane's Boring "Platonic" Relationship Many things happen, but at the end Akane gets shot twice by Tomami, then they end up debating why the law is important. On the crucial moment when he's about to kill her, Kogami shoots him down and says that he agrees with the dude he just killed. The law is not necessary and that basically, humans suck and are horrible. He tells her: "But I believe in you, who's trying to do the right thing."
So Akane recovers and Kogami goes to jail. She tells the Sibyl system that she'll take Arata Shindo's place as a politician and in her exit ceremony shoots Chief Kasei in front of everyone. She's sent to jail and Kogami comes out. Then, finally, once she's done what she had to do, Akane can fully cry.
I was telling Jedi that it bothers me how emotionless Kogami is throughout this whole thing. In the PP Movie their encounter was so intense, from them fighting, to not being able to sleep because there were too many questions, too many things to be said. Akane had grown and learned from him. He observes her, he's curious about her, he wonders what she thinks about him. It bothers him that she compares him to Makishima and is about to open up when she tells him that he would never try to control anyone's heart. If you are expecting frank moments like that in Providence, you won't get them. But for some reason, when you have dreamed so much of these two together, finally seeing them in the same place is exciting and I can't deny I left the theater a little high on shinkane. Kogami looks absolutely hot and Akane looks beautiful in many scenes.
Gino is Hot This one is obvious, but it needs to be said: Gino is hot. Passionate, sensitive, loyal team player. He saves Sugo, he saves Frederica, he consoles Akane, he thanks Mika when she gives him an obscene dominator. He yells at Kogami. He forgives Kogami. He wants to see Kogami regret what he did like Akane does. He gets a little bit further than Akane in that aspect.
I think at some point they try to play off Kogami and Frederica, and Ginoza and Frederica. Maybe they're showing that they would both work well with her. In our perverted fandom's mind I'm sure we're all thinking these professional agents would probably sleep with each other no feelings involved.
Frederica Has the Hots for Her Boss This is my own view, but the few times Frederica shows emotion is when it comes to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. She really appreciates him. At some point he's kidnapped and tortured by Tomami. When they rescue him (or rather, when Akira brings him to them), she's more concerned with his health than with Akira's statement which she assigns to Kogami. When the minister gets "possessed" and breaks down, she's locked in an elevator or a room, banging her fists against the door helplessly. I can't recall if she cries. But she wasn't crying when Saiga died, lol.
Final Verdict I think Psycho-Pass Providence was a good movie. Definitely better than Season 3 and First Inspector. This is a piece of media that I can respect. It's not great, it's not fantastic. It's more of the same in many aspects, it doesn't advance some things, but at least it doesn't feel cartoonish and stupid at points. Seems like the writers are definitely sticking to their strategy of showing explosions, fights and larger and less practical guns instead of writing an emotional buildup to the dramatic beats. The dominator has always been cool. They overdo these new dominators, making them look ridiculous and impractical.
However, Akane shooting Chief Kasei to get back at the system, exposing the contradictions of Sybil and forcing the public to wonder why her hue is clear when she shot someone in front of everyone, is pretty badass. She's willing to pay the price for what she did and goes to jail. Kogami promises that he'll do anything he can to get her out of there. Mister, where was all this resolve when you had the time and space to talk to her? He just doesn't learn. Ugh.
Either way, we know why Akane did what she did, but the interesting thing is that in the world of Season 3 nothing much has changed. Did Akane go to jail for three years for nothing? If there's a new season, I hope that she has at least inspired other people to question the system. Who knows. The writers seem stuck on their ambiguity in regards to everything.
