In the Snow

A gift fic for @a-ghostlight-for-roman! Feel good snow shenanigans to end this year on a happy note; I hope you like it!

 Summary: All they wanted to do was have a simple snowball fight, but they all get a bit more than they bargained for when creativity is thrown in the mix.

Warnings: being buried in snow, minor swearing. If i missed any let me know!

“Princey, you look absolutely ridiculous.”

Roman huffed angrily from beneath his thick red scarf, flapping his arms that were so wrapped in sweaters and a coat he couldn’t put them down to his sides. With fur lined boots to top it off he looked like he was going to be traveling the harsh mountains in the bitter cold rather than just playing outside in the snow for an hour.

“Mmff Mmmmmff!”

Virgil cocked his head and smirked. “You know what I change my mind- I like this look a lot better now that I know you can’t talk in it.” Not waiting to see the prince’s reaction, Virgil made a beeline for the door, flinging it open and joining the others in the large front lawn.

“Of all the-” Roman had removed his scarf just to spout of his many grievances to Virgil’s uncaring ears when he was cut off with a snowball directly to the mouth. Virgil looked around to see Remus pointing at Janus who cuffed him soundly in the back of the head with a handful of snow, making the darkest faucet squeal and faceplant in the snow, which made absolutely no sense for the side to do but it was Remus so Virgil simply took it in stride and laughed quietly as Roman tried frantically to brush all of the snow away from his face, taking a running leap  at his twin who promptly snapped his fingers and jumped backwards.

“Remus kiddo, it's freezing! Put your clothes back on!” Patton called out in exasperation, putting the snow fort he was building with Logan on hold as he turned to make sure the twins wouldn’t be actively hurting each other the moment their back was turned. 

“Virgil save me!” Roman was currently running frantically away from a very naked Remus, his face a mask of desperation as he moved as quickly as he was able in the many layers he had decided to put on. Thankfully Jnaus reached forward and managed to lasso Remus around the middle, making Virgil cringe as the other face planted yet again in the snow before trying to burrow underneath it like some sort of demented sandworm.

“How about we play nice for a second and make snow forts like we planned hm? Didn’t you say you wanted to beat Roman at the snowball fight?” Janus’ words finally got Remus to stop wiggling and shook up from the snow, banishing the lasso and snapping a heap of snow bricks into existence. Cackling he caught Janus around the collar and dragged him to the piles, completely distracted as he babled excitedly about laying the foundation. Virgil watched in bemusement as Roman dragged him further away to start their own fort.

“And put your clothes on!” Patton yelled.

Logan sputtered as he was hit square in the face with another snowball, fully tagging him out of the fight as Patton desperately tried to make enough to save their fort. Before he could even try their entire wall exploded in a huge puff of snow, Virgil holding his sides laughing across the yard as a somehow smoking snow cannon retreated back into their fort.

“No fair I can’t make canons!” Patton whined.

“Sucks to be Morality!” Remus helpfully yelled back, standing on Janus’ shoulders and snapping a contraption of his own into existence, Virgil opening his eyes and stilling in fear as he saw what Remus was doing. Roman caught on as well, face going white as he frantically tried to reinforce their wall.

“Boom bitch!” Remus screamed as Virgil dove behind Roman in fear while the giant snow wrecking back barreled towards them at a ridiculous speed, exploding on impact and sending the entire yards worth of snow to pile on top of them.

Remus popped out first, having been forcibly shoved up and out by an incredibly annoyed janus who wiggled out afterward. They watched as Virgil was launched out of the snow pile, landing on his back while he wheezed in gulping breaths, Roman not far behind him faceplanting not unlike how Remus had done earlier as he caught his own breath. Logan and Patton’s heads popped up through the drift not a minute later, Patton puffing out a  laugh in spite of himself as Remus sheepishly went over to help pull them out. 

“Oops.” He said as a way to apologize.

“Oops? Oops! Remus you almost killed us!” Virgil’s shrill yell rang out over the yard but he was laughing all the same, soaked through to his skin from being buried so deeply.

“This will only be repeated for science you hear me?” Logan jabbed a shivering finger in Remus’ face, the brightness in his eyes saying he was more excited than angry at the moment.

“Sure, nerd.” Remus replied before getting dragged by the collar by Roman who was muttering obscenities under his scarf quietly enough that Patton wouldn’t hear as he headed back to the house, stomping all the way as Remus just continued to laugh. Their wet clothes were replaced easily enough with their softest pajamas once they were actually in the door, after which Remus promptly flung himself onto Janus' back, Janus rolling his eyes and only needing a moment to adjust speaking to how often Remus must do it already. Clapping his hands, Patton headed to the kitchen declaring loudly that he’d get the hot chocolate started, everyone freezing in fear until Logan sighed and nodded, making his way into the kitchen with the fatherly side to make sure he didn’t set the cocoa on fire...again.

Later in the evening, with all the sides curled up in various places around the living room with their mus of hot chocolate and favorite movie playing in the background they all eased back and relaxed fully for the first time in a long while. No screaming matches between them, no blame thrown and whipped back twice as hard, no debates they called their very existence into question. Just all of them simply existing in a space they had built for themselves and kept peaceful for the holidays at least. They weren’t all on the best of terms still, and god only knew what fresh dilemma Thomas would get worked into his head that would need thought and fought over once again to try and make the best out of the situation they found themselves in. But none of it mattered as the coca warmed their hands and let the movie lull them into companionable silence, even Remus managing to sit still for once. 

For today at least, they could all come together truly like a family and simply enjoy the company they decided to keep.
